It was lunch time and we were the only customers in the whole place, so we got very prompt service. It was very dark inside, but I don't mind that on a super hot day. Do all you can eat sushi for a fixed price lunch or dinner (this includes appetizers like soup, salad etc) 2.) order a La carte - you can order sushi or the Japanese food they have I opted for the all you can eat lunch special sushi - it was delicious. All of the sushi was very fresh and perfect temperature and presentation wise. They have patio garden seating and plenty of indoor seating - there are also some cool lights and decor inside (even in the bathroom!). The server I had was also very friendly. While I enjoyed all the rolls, I wouldn't say there was anything exceptional about them. All pretty standard, but still tasty. The spicy miso soup was delicious! Tasty little place. An interesting variety of sushi considering we were in the middle of Florida, and surprisingly fresh. The size of sushi is smaller than what we normally get up in New York but the price was about half of what we pay in New York, so felt like a really good deal. I had been meaning to try this place out but never got around to it. Went today & I won't be going back! The service was nice but I saw one of the staff members touching the food without gloves. Everyone had on gloves but him. With so much going around that was all I needed to see. Luckily what he was touching was not not what I ordered or I would have gotten up and left! Umai is a GREAT place to eat! The Sushi rolls and Apps are Amazing! We are big eaters so we get 4 apps and 4 rolls, Try the Hawaii Roll! The Crab salad was new to us and we loved it, also their potstickers/shumai/gyozas are Awesome! Prices are also VERY reasonable!!! Ask for Pedro, he knows the menu inside out and he makes everything possible. Also, their prices are the best in Pinellas. OH and the BEST thing for us? Their Corkage fee for bringing your own Wine is $5.00. We chill our Wine, and pair select Wines with Select rolls so each time we go, it is also an experience for us. We had to stop going to our favorite Sushi Restaurant in Clearwater because they all of a sudden implemented a ridiculous $20 corkage fee which is actually how we found Umai ...and we are SO glad we did! Based on all the 5 star reviews, we went to this restaurant close to our Airbnb. It was quite the letdown. The sushi and sushi rolls that we ordered looked average at best. The rice was compacted to the point you really can't see the individual grains of rice. We had salmon roe sushi (ikura) and the roe looked "mushy". The shrimp tempura dinner was overloaded with more veggie than shrimp and it was rather greasy. Gyoza was bland and the sauce that came with it was okay. The only items that I truly enjoyed was the seaweed salad. It was not easy to get the soup and salad served. We had to keep asking if the dinner entree came with both soup and salad as it wasn't brought out without prompting. For a Japanese restaurant, it was interesting that not a single staff member was Asian. Not sure if the owner is Asian. My first clue should have been the lack of Asian reviewers and then at the restaurant, not a single Asian customer. I thought I'll be more honest with the stars and quality of food. If you're looking for good sushi, this place is not it. However, if you're looking for cheap sushi, this is where you want to be. read more

Umai sushi is one of my favorite sushi places in the Tampa Bay Area. Not only is their food delicious, it is fairly priced as well! I've ordered takeout from here many times and it never disappoints. Consistency is key! I've dined in once as well. The staff is very nice. I like how the restaurant is small, so staff is in full view for whenever you need anything. It's fairly quiet inside. I got a piece of surf clam sushi, one escolar roll and one chef special roll Fantastic Spicy Tuna roll. The surf clam is big and cover the entire rice ball. The escolar roll is still feel a bit frozen. The Fantastic Spicy Tuna is good. It is spicy tuna deep fried then add the special mayo and ell sauce. Then top with shredded imitation crab meat. I purchased 2 lunch Sushi meals for take out and my wife didn't even finish hers. The tuna and salmon did not look fresh and I was sick within 30min. I spare you the details but I will not eat here again. So....I really struggled with this rating. If I could, I would have given this place a 2.5 but I guess I'll round that up to 3 since Yelp doesn't allow for 1/2 stars. I ordered from this place using Uber Eats tonight. I ordered the steak & chicken hibachi meal and a spicy tuna roll. Let's start with the good: - the food was still hot when it arrived so I know it was super fresh! - the portion size is HUGE. There is NO WAY 1 person could (or should) eat a full hibachi meal alone - all of the extras I asked for (ginger, wasabi, etc) were all included - the spicy tuna roll had a great kick...I usually need to add wasabi because it's never spicy enough but this one was on point!! The not so good: - while the miso soup was still piping hot when it arrived which I really appreciated, unfortunately it was a SALT BOMB and barely edible because it was so salty. A crying shame because other than the excessive salt level, the flavor was beautiful - I ordered my hibachi steak medium rare (I wanted to make sure my steak was still juicy when it got here so I purposely ordered it under to account for the delivery time) but when it got here, the steak was BEYOND well done. My steak had ZERO pink or red inside, all fully cooked. The chicken in the hibachi meal was also SUPER dry (think sandpaper...) - the hibachi meal includes rice AND noodles which I didn't realize, unfortunately neither one were great, they were both just fine. No real flavor in either but the fried rice was 1/2 a step better than the noodles. All in all, the food was meh. Maybe if I had eaten in the restaurant I would have had better food. Being that it's a newly opened restaurant, we decided to have lunch there and see what it was like. We were pleasantly surprised! It's located in a sort of sketchy strip center on Missouri Ave. in Largo but don't let that dissuade you. The interior is open and the restrooms and back area of the restaurant are a work in progress. They have a vast menu of sushi rolls, tempura and hibachi meals. We opted for the lunch specials menu. For lunch, they also had a special price for sushi rolls. We decided to get the two rolls for $6.99. We got the Spicy Tuna roll and the Eel Roll. They were tasty but a little on the mushy side. For entrées, we ordered the Combination Hibachi meal with steak and shrimp ($10.50). (see pic) The meal came with miso soup and a salad with ginger dressing. The entrée came with lots of veggies and some tasty fried rice. We had ordered our steak medium rare and indeed it was! The shrimp were nicely seasoned. Overall, we had a great lunch! The Hibachi meal was the star of the show. We would definitely get it again. For something different, the Umai was a wonderful choice. I'm thinking that this restaurant might be the reincarnation of the Umai Japanese Hibachi and Sushi Cuisine restaurant that recently closed in Dunedin. read more

I've been going to this restaurant for a couple years now (at least once a month). The food is always amazing, reasonably priced. The restaurant is clean, quiet and in a plaza with plenty of parking. Leaving a review today because the service has just become awful. They have one server who works day shift, I assume (never see her at dinner) and this is the second time that she was just rude and awful. I stopped dining inside for lunch because there was always only this one server. Today took me by surprise to hear her laughing, loudly, about my order right behind the doors of the kitchen (keep in mind I'm the only one in the restaurant). If it wasn't late and we had other options, we prob would have walked due to the lack of cleanliness. If the entire place is filthy and unkept, the obviously the kitchen is the worst part of that. Once we got our food, it was decent. The portions of nigiri are big. The crunch roll was well built and tasty. The Pacific Fusion roll was super tasty. Most of the nigiri (tuna, unagi, masago) was good except for the octopus; it was more rubbery than normal and not fresh. Basically: we won't be back because the place is way dirty and disorganized, although the food was pretty good.
