i've been going to see Quanna here for over a year now and i love her SO MUCH. when i first came to this ulta from a different location, my hair was very damaged from being overbleached, the color was constantly fading, it wasn't the shade i wanted, and the cut was a bit too piecey. Quanna knew what my hair needed even more than i did, and the cut and color i have now from her is my signature look. she's always been completely honest in product recommendations, never pushing a product on me that she didn't personally believe in. she also started using the ph bonder on my hair as soon as ulta introduced it and my hair has never looked healthier (and the color lasts so long !!). i just moved out of state so i won't be able to see her as my regular stylist and i'm heartbroken. but whenever i'm back in chicago i'm absolutely getting my hair done by Quanna. i love her so much read more

I decided to use my points at Ulta for a haircut, and overall, the experience + customer service was smooth. My hairstylist was kind, considerate, and very gentle with my hair, which I appreciated. However, since I live alone, I wasn't able to check the back of my head immediately after the haircut. Unfortunately, my partner later noticed that many of the layers in my hair weren't well blended and looked quite choppy. She made me feel so comfortable, she exceeded my hair expectations, and when she found out that the occasion was that it was my birthday she offered to do my makeup too and JESSE did my eyebrows. If it could give zero stars for this location I would. The customer service at this location is awful! It has been several instances where the service has been dissatisfying and I've always given grace, but it's unacceptable to keep happening. I went in a few days ago to pick up some beauty items for a gala I was attending that evening. I was in the store for about 45 mins before anyone asked me if I needed any help, so I proceeded to locate items on my own. As I'm trying out testers, I see that there are no makeup wipes stocked anywhere on the back ends of the walls. The only person in sight to ask for makeup wipes was the Benefit brow specialist. I saw he had a client coming in so in an attempt to not take up too much of his time, I simply asked if he could provide me with wipes for the testers. He was rude and stated they're on the back wall stations. I told him they were empty, as I had checked them all. He then ignored me and began tending to his client. I was able to locate some paper towels to wipe makeup off my hands and wrists. Then, a young lady finally asked me if I needed any help. I informed her of what I needed (a blush) and as she proceeded to help me, she got called to the register. She told me she'd be back. As she attempted to come back, she was AGAIN, called back to the register. So I sat there and waited because there was no one else around to assist. Once she finished at the register she avoided coming back to me and began helping another customer. I was patient and then when I noticed she had a moment, I asked if I could just get some help with locating the blush she was initially going to help with. Rudely, she stated I'll be with you in a second. She never came back and proceeded to help the client with all of his needs. I actually heard her tell that client "I'll help you with whatever you need to make sure you have everything" and walked briskly past me. It took everything in me not to just put down the all items I had found and just leave. Had I not been crunched for time with the gala that evening, I would have. She deliberately left me and my 4 yr old sitting there waiting with no follow up. I went back to search for the blush on my own until I spotted a manager who after all of this time was able to tell me that they were sold out of it. Thankfully, she was able to help me find something else but she was also rushed. This is my neighborhood Ulta and I'm a platinum member, so this is beyond disappointing. That's the problem with chain stores: you're only as good as your worst store. Will be taking my business to the multitude of online and brick and mortar competitors. I can't say I bought a lot here, actually I can't say I bought anything. I went in with my fiance who wanted to buy some stuff, and unlike other Ultas, this one was nice because I didn't feel pressured by the staff and as a HUGE bonus I was able to find a seat at a not crowded counter so I could relax while my fiance shopped. The seat I found was comfy, stable, and out of the way. No one bugged me to buy anything, so I could tell they knew the deal. From what I could tell from the noises around the place, the salespeople were polite and friendly with the shoppers. Overall a nice experience. I would sit here again. read more

A simple greeting and asking if you need assistance should not be a foreign language! COUPON CLUB This place rocks with the coupons. In fact, I won't even buy anything here unless I have the coupon. I came shopping in here today and ended up not getting what I needed. While I was in the back of the store getting my stuff, my partner in crime was checking out at the front of the store. So when I walked up to use my coupon, I found out my wife had just used two coupons. The girl at the front counter almost stopped her but my wife said she was using her husband's coupon. So there I stood with product in my hand. Great! So I put my items back because I'm not buying stuff here without my coupon. On a side note this store is huge and not very crowded. The Roosevelt Collection Shops were quickly becoming my favorite place to shop but that may change soon. I just found out that starting January 2014 they will be charging for parking. They do realize that there's an Ulta on Halsted with a free parking lot (shared with Mariano's). I hate to tell this location but I'm gonna have to shop there. Why spend money on parking when I can use it on products in the store! If you haven't joined the club, then I recommend you do. You get monthly coupons and there great coupons. Anywhere from $3.50 to $5 off when making a $10 purchase. That's a great deal. read more

Not going to lie, I had a great experience with helpful employees up until the very end while I was checking out. I noticed on the Ulta website earlier today that they were having a Black Friday robe or plush throw deal for fragrance purchases of $65 or more. There was no mention of this deal being an online exclusive, so I went into the store. The employee checking me out was obviously new and still in training, so when I asked her how close I was to reaching the $65 min for the robe, she flagged down a manager to clarify the promotion. The manager was so short with the employee and me, and when I asked if candles applied this fragrance deal, she said no without even checking. (Fact check: They are.) I just assumed I misread the fine print online, so I didn't question it. However I checked online again once I got home and realized the manager misspoke. Had she actually taken time to look into the deal for me, I probably would've grabbed one or two more things since I was just a little under the minimum. I understand Black Friday/the holiday season is a stressful time for people in retail, but I would have still appreciated quality customer service. I also did not appreciate that she was short with the worker in training and gave her incorrect information about one of their biggest promotions of the week. Not saying everyone was awful or my entire experience sucked - it was just disappointing to see a person in a higher position setting a poor example for the sales associates. read more

I've been a fan of Ulta for a while. Once I saw that this Ulta was opened, I immediately went. After a quick glance through most of the aisles, I was pleased with how stocked up and tidy they were. Their salon bar was pretty neat, too. This is definitely an Ulta to check out before more people know that it's open and everything gets rummaged through. It was kind of empty, but I like that because I can head straight in and find what I'm looking for. The sales associates were very nice and asked if I needed help finding anything. They had a mark down on Ulta brand make-up so I grabbed the mascara that I had been eyeing for a while. (I can always trust Ulta for deals on make-up!) Their grand opening sale is right around the corner and I will be back for that! read more

Great layout and never crowded. I love shopping their selection of NYX, Ecotools brushes, and travel sized goodies. The Benefit brow bar is fabulous and I love seeing Scott for waxes. He cools down your skin afterwards and even re-makeups and fills in your brows. Colleeh in the salon is equally fabulous - she's sweet and willing to try new things. It's a no frills salon experience, but consistently good. The only thing I wasn't a fan of was the manicure (OPI gel Mani's only and there's no soaking or cuticle cleanup). read more

I got make up done there for a special occasion and made it very clear that I was looking for a natural look, they messed up even the basics such as blending in the foundation properly, didn't bother putting mascara on the eye lashes and literally made my eyes look like a racoon with half an inch thick eye liner above and below my lashes and to top it all off, the artist decided to put a dark purple lipstick on my lips... Completely ruined my special day. Ps-this is after me asking them to fix it and them wiping my make up twice. At that point I was late to the event so decided to leave with the make up as is. Thasima was the person who took care of me at the register. I was going for a good experience for my birthday. Unfortunately Thasima gave me the worst attitude. I had asked her about a product she gave no opinion and was very rude, probably said one or two words. As I was going to mention about my birthday gift she made another comment about letting her know on time, when she was rushing me out. After mentioning the birthday gift I told her I wanted to use my coupon and seemed unhappy. AVOID. Shopping at this Ulta is equivalent to shopping for makeup at the drugstore, but at least my CVS does not pretend to have impeccable service. Every time I have visited this place, no one has ever greeted me, asked me if I can be helped, or even made non-antagonizing eye contact. The employees usually just stand around in groups laughing (probably at the customers for being such suckers) and act like you owe them one in exchange for getting help on selecting a shade of foundation. The kind lady I approached when I was in the market for a new foundation was really enthusiastic until I told her that my budget was for a drugstore brand, and then she took me to that aisle and left me to own devices. There is a perfectly good Ulta in the West Loop, and I'll happily take my wallet and my patronage there. :) read more

So, I went to Ulta yesterday after reviewing one of the stylists portfolios on styleseat. I was in desperate need of a trim because it had been a while and my ends were looking scraggly. I contacted the stylist, Ahz, and he confirmed that a walk-in would be permissible. I waited an hour and 30 minutes, but I wasn't tripping because I needed my hair to slay for the night. So, first red flag: he curled the young lady sitting in the chair and she left looking like she had a helmet on her head. No judgement zone. Maybe it was a bad day. Now it's my turn. I sit in the chair, take off my glasses and he starts cutting. He starts at the back and gets to the front. 2nd red flag: it was taking him an incredibly long time to trim some ends. Then, He cuts my front and I'm thinking to myself like 'damn, I know my hair wasn't damaged in the front.' Mr. Edward scissor hands chopped off 3 inches!!! I came in as 'long hair don't care' and left with a barely shoulder length helmet. The shape is awful!! Now, I didn't ask him to shape my hair, I asked him to trim the ends. This man is obsessed with helmets and now I look like I play for the Steelers. I slept on it to make sure I wasn't overreacting. I'm still pissed, but more sad today. Came in the first Saturday they were open. It was quiet inside. There was what seemed to be an employee training class going on which blocked some of the aisles. Annoying. I was greeted by the girl when I walked in and then never was talked to again - which in all the other Ultas it's been the opposite for me. The girl who was working the register wasn't especially friendly and gave me one tiny bag for the stuff I bought. (which this is the third time that's happened to me at Ulta! Do they have rules for not using anything larger that a small bag??) In any event, I love that it's down the street from me now! Great location with convenient parking. The biggest downfall is staff. Came in on a Sunday after wasn't crowded at all. No one greeted us, asked if we needed assistance, or even had eye contact. This is a huge pet peeve for me since I worked in retail for 6 years. I knew that I wanted to purchase some smashbox matte lipstick, but I chose to wait. I love the ulta off clyborne and will visit that one for my purchases. also, my cousin stood at the philosophy area for 30 mins bc she had no idea of what products she needed. HEADLINE: Salon Manager/"Master Stylist" (Stephanie) walks away from $250+ salon service because she, "Doesn't like to foil." Should've know from her first statement, "So you're a blonde and highlight... Can I ask why?", that a train wreck was headed in my direction. After spending 15+ minutes 'selling' me on trying an alternative method to my highlighting process I have had done for 25+ years, she says, "Let me write up the ticket ($264+ with my 25% discount on the highest ticketed service as first time salon customer... and was going to charge extra to blow dry my entire head with a round brush-I opted for just my bangs and crown...), and we'll see where we end up." After given the quote, I said, "My only concern is that I make the investment in a process that we don't know how the results will be with my hair, and then I have to turn around a pay again for the full highlight process that I initially booked when making my appointment." She proceeds to say, "Right. I just really don't like the time it takes to foil. We're under no commitment here. You can walk away and think about it." During my lengthy pause collecting my response, Stephanie continues to say, "Remember... I am a Master Stylist. I can schedule you with a D1 Stylist whose prices would be much lower, and I have one that will foil all day long (naming Heavenly). Now I'm not sure about the cut, but I could schedule her to do your highlight, and I could do your cut after." I said, "Today?"... Since I had already cleared my schedule for the appointment I ALREADY had scheduled... She says, "Well she's not here today and she doesn't come in until 2pm (after explaining in length to her personally that I have an 8 year old that I have to pick up at 3:30 when she booked my initial appointment for this morning)..." Needless to say, my much needed salon service was NOT completed, and I WILL NEVER RETURN!!! I'll happily spend my $500+/EACH MONTH in retail purchases with a company that understands the value of putting the right people in Management roles to build their business, not destroy them...And just for arguments sake, I'm going to include a pic of the 'difficult' highlight service request... I had a haircut appointment at 7:30pm with Lamisha. I arrived at 7:20pm and waited until 7:50pm while she finished up with previous customer. She apologized and proceeded to take me back to the hair washing station, where she applied a deep conditioning treatment, which I hadn't asked for. I assumed she was comping me with this treatment because she had run late to start my appointment. I noticed there was a young girl at the washing station next to me, whose hair she was also working on. Lamisha finished my deep conditioning treatment and put me under the stand dryer for the treatment to sit. She then proceeded to finish the young girl's hair washing and took her out to the salon to blowdry/style. It occurred to me that she only applied this treatment so that it could sit and buy her time to work on someone else's hair during my appointment. I was sat under the dryer for about 30 minutes, hot and with an itchy scalp from so long under the heat (my assumption is that the deep conditioning treatment only really needs to sit for max 15 minutes). The dryer eventually turned off automatically, at which point I thought Lamisha would hear, and come and get me to continue on to wash my hair. I then sat at the stand dryer for another 25-30 minutes while she continued to work on the young girl's hair out in the salon. Not sure if she had forgotten about me, I went out to tell her the dryer had been off for around 30 minutes already and to ask how much longer it would be. She proceeded to say "honestly, you could be washed out now, but I need to finish up here, and it's going to be another 15 minutes. If you really need to go, you can come back another day." She said this as if I hadn't booked an appointment with her and she was doing me a favor by fitting me in that evening. Although extremely annoyed, I told her I would wait the 15 minutes (I needed my bangs trimmed badly). I went back to the hair washing station, and after 15 minutes, she was still working on the young girl's hair. I decided to tell her I was going to leave. She apologized, said she was really behind schedule that day, and offered a complimentary haircut for another day. At this point, though, why would I want to come back to the salon for a similar experience even if it's free? Why would she not have told me before my appointment that she was running so behind and that it might be better to reschedule? Better yet, why wouldn't the salon call me before I showed up, to tell me it might be best to reschedule? The whole time I was sitting there, she never so much as even offered me a magazine to read. Or to update me on what she was doing and how long I would be waiting. I ended up leaving the store with deep conditioning treatment still in my hair, and had to shower at home to wash it out. All in all, I was sat waiting for an hour and half, only to get some deep conditioner put in. I've never had such poor service in a salon and left fuming at what a waste of my time this was. I've been a big fan of Ulta over the years and have always had great customer service in store (to this point, the other associates were even very kind as I was leaving, without knowing what I had just sat through). The salon, however, really needs to step it up. read more

This store is smaller and does not carry the same items as the other stores. They stated it does not have the full spa either. I have been in the store a few times since it opened the people are nice but not too educated about the products! This can be a big deal with the type of items they sale. I've been a client at the salon at this location for over a year now, and Stephanie, the salon manager, is AMAZING. The first time she styled me, I wanted to go from violet/dark brown to hot pink, and she went ABOVE AND BEYOND in every way to get my color looking totally awesome, while keeping my hair super soft and healthy! (It took about 11 hours to get all the lightening and color steps, and she never got frustrated!) She's always willing to work with me on scheduling, and ready to change things up if I need something new. I won't go to anyone else for my color!!
