A bit too precious for me. The sushi roll I had was very good but so overpriced for a very small roll. The other dish I had was so salty I could not eat it. Stopped in with my coworkers the other night and decided to try a few dishes to share. I didn't get many pictures because they were devoured before I could snap them. Our service was wonderful. The waitress was very attentive. I didn't get her name but she brought us an extra crane for my friends cocktail so she wouldn't be left out. All our cocktails were delicious and well balanced. The food dishes came out super quick. We were not expecting that. The pork katsu Japanese curry was a favorite, and pork belly buns were a second. The sauces that accompanied the cold cucumber dish and the fried chicken were excellent. We wanted to pack them up and dip everything in them! The menu describes the veggie ramen as a coconut milk curry based ramen, but it is actually a thin dark broth with heavy (hard to stomach) mushroom flavor with no hints of coconut curry at all. Has a generous portion of mushrooms on top, which was definitely not described on the menu. Seemed like a 'bait and switch' to us. We very rarely waste food, but couldn't eat this. The appetizers were great though! Edamame, tofu, okonomiyaki, chilled peanut noodles were all awesome. Tofu bao was decent, but the bun-filling ratio leaned heavily toward 'bun'. A friend recommended this restaurant and since she's one of the coolest people on the planet, I took her up on trying it and drove 3 hours to Savannah. Ok, I confess... I mainly wanted to see my friend, but I was also excited to indulge in the culinary mastery going on at Ukiyo. The online pictures give this restaurant a more upscale look and feel but in the real world, it's real casual. Because I can appreciate a good ramen and hate the packaged stuff, I was chuffed about trying Ukiyo. I started the evening with a $13 a plate of roasted garlic, scallions and hon dashi wok fried rice. It was a little crunchy for rice but tasted alright when there wasn't a crunch. I did what I could with the crunchy rice before moving on to my main course which was the "veggie ramen". I think I read the menu correctly, at the dimly lit bar, which suggested the ramen base was supposed to consist of a coconut milk curry base. This $16 ramen wasn't that unless coconut and curry now taste like mushrooms. Everybody knows that a ramen broth is EVERYTHING to a ramen dish and the not made for primetime mushroom broth I ingested, not only missed the mark, but it also missed the point of it all. I had to give the "veggie ramen" a hard pass and stick to a reliable bar refreshment. If you find yourself in Savannah, GA and you're dining at Ukiyo, ask for the amazing master mixologist Anna B at the bar and she will hook you up. When you first walk in, you are impressed with the very Japanese-styled decor. The bar is very nice and the seating is appropriately spaced. We are at Ukiyo and loved our overall experience! The design is fun and chic, staff is attentive and knowledgeable, food is delicious and ingredients are fresh! We had a group of four people and arrived at the restaurant at about 5:45/6:00 PM on a Friday night and we're immediately sat. When we left about an hour later the place was full so I would highly recommend a reservation anytime after 6:00 PM. The menu is broken down my small plates, shareable items and sides. Our group ordered several different items and shared. The menu had several great options and there were daily specials as well. The cocktails were delicious and very well crafted. The Okonomiyaki is a great shareable dish! The cold peanut noodles had great flavor without an overpowering peanut taste and the noodles were not over cooked/soggy which I commonly find in these types of dishes - so a win for me! The sushi roll daily special was great, they serve their sushi as it is intended to be consumed, and they don't immediately bring soy sauce, but they will if you ask for it! We had really high expectations for our meal here and the experience was underwhelming. Dishes were just ok. The hot chicken was through the roof spicy- with burnt fried chicken taste. The tuna special sauce was so spicy - it ruined the flavor of any bite to come. You couldn't taste the expensive tuna under that searing wasabi sauce. The quail was teeny tiny and under salted. The scallops were pretty good. The chilled peanut noodles tasted pretty dry and basic, they were alright but it was a small portion and nothing special. The wife and I have been on a quest to find a really good ramen spot locally and luckily we found this place. This is definitely a very good ramen spot in Savannah, arguably the best in the county. The Tonkotsu ramen was a lot better than I expected. It was very good and I highly recommend it. The pork buns and quail were really good as well. Trying to find parking on a Thursday night was surprisingly challenging but with all of the restaurants on that road I should've known better. The decorations in the restaurant, at the tables, and even in the restroom were very nice and set a nice atmosphere. The staff were very nice and attentive. Made us feel at home. I am slowly working my way through the menu but did get to try all the charcoal options.. and would definitely order them all again! I love all the flavors, I feel like it would taste just as good as a virgin version but I wouldn't order an alcoholic version again. For food we got the Asian corn cob as an appetizer. It was soooo good! Think Mexican street corn but better! My partner ordered the Tonkotsu ramen and it was okay and will probably suffice if we are really craving it considering options in Savannah don't get much better. Come on now...most flavorless ramen I have ever had, and at the highest price point. We got tonkotsu ramen and asked for it spicy. The spice is given on the side and is like chili paste? Has the likeness of sambal kind of. They added saffron to it for some reason. It did give a kick but not really the flavor profile that you expect for ramen. Also, tell me why they didn't think to tell us that it was $5 for the spice. Usually other places only make it a dollar to make it spicy, so I didn't expect that on our check. The egg was also an onsen egg which was weird because I was craving the nice soft boiled egg you get with most ramen. The egg just like disappeared into the broth that I didn't want because again...no flavor. I will say though, the pork in it was good. We are frequent visitors to Savannah and have always enjoyed the culinary scene. Recently we spent 5 days dining at some of our old faves, legendary restaurants and award-winning destinations. We endeavored to try at least one new place for a meal and a cocktail each day (not hard to achieve). Ukiyo was our last stop and it stood WAY out from all the others - including a similar concept we visited just a block away. Every dish we had was amazing - hamachi and bluefin nigiri so amazing we made multiple orders. We started with cocktails and charred edamame. Then gorged on the nigiri, a special salmon roll and a couple buns - washed down with a bottle of sake. We were super full at this point, but couldn't pass up the okonomiyaki - which was absolutely delicious. Do grab a seat at the bar and watch the pros in action. They are all engaging, friendly professionals from head chef, Danica, to Carlos, Rob, Maggie - we can't recall all (including the superb and very busy sushi chef) but every single team member was as hospitable as could be. What a great find! Love this area of Savannah and we are big ramen fans so this was an unexpected surprise! Started off with the hamachi kamikaze roll, roasted mushrooms and the karage chicken. We had the tonkotsu and veggie ramens. The veggie ramen was a touch bland but after adding the chili bombs to the ramens (no charge, and didn't see on the menu) they were delicious.
