Mentai Cream Sauce Udon
Carol C.

Went to the SF location for the first time years ago and couldn't stop thinking about this place since! Was happy to see that they had a location in San Mateo. Everything was amazing and the portions were huge. I order the Mentai Cream Udon and share the takoyaki and I am always sooo full after. There was a bit of a wait after ordering, but it was a holiday weekend. We were sat on the patio but the restaurant had a nice interior. Definitely a must whenever we are in the Bay Area.

First time visit, and enthralled by this place. Beautiful thematic interior with a very strong staff who were all willing to help our table. The menu carries such a large diversity of items to cater different soup/rice plate tastes. The sukiyaki was a little more on the sweeter side and wish there was a little more umami balance, but the regular bowl was very filling. The table got the shrimp tempura set, the tonkatsu broth, and the curry katsu soup, and every item was tasty and the plating very thoughtful. I'm especially impressed by how child friendly this place was. I got the same vibes as marufuku, with the gashapon machine for the kids meal, the high quality bibs available for kids and adults, the child bowls and utensils, and the water cubs with lids and bendy straws. Both locations are great, but the menu at udon mugizo gives it a sizable edge. Great spot, and absolutely cannot wait to come back.

Niku udon (regular size)

Came here at 6pm on a Saturday and put myself down on the Yelp wait-list at the entrance and waited 35 minutes. The interior design was beautiful and modern and comfortable. There was an employee making the udon fresh in-house with a machine in a large-windowed room along the hallway to the bathroom. Service was great. Our waiter was friendly and went through the menu thoroughly along with what's popular here and what he personally recommended. He also refilled our waters without prompting. Our food arrived quickly after we ordered. Karaage - 6 large pieces of moist, juicy, well-seasoned chicken. The batter was crispy and not oily. I would've liked there to be a little more dipping sauce. I would get this again. Tonkotsu udon deluxe - chashu was tender, broth was perfectly pork-bone-milky, udon had a nice chewy al dente texture, egg was perfectly cooked with that gelatinous yolk and well-marinated. The texture of the kakuni (pork belly) was a bit too dry/well-done for my taste, so I think I'll just get the regular tonkotsu next time. Niku udon - larger bowl/portion than the tonkotsu, even though both were regular size. The fish broth was nicely light, udon was the same great al dente texture as the one in tonkotsu dish, beef was not chewy. Mentai cream sauce udon - akin to a Japanese carbonara pasta, the sauce was very garlicky and had a kick of spice from the spicy cod roe. All of the elements came together well, from the crispy tempura bits, to the richness of the sauce, to the crunch from the green onions. In terms of flavor this was my favorite dish out of the 3. This dish can get a bit heavy as you keep eating, so I would recommend you take some home for another meal or split with someone else. All 3 noodle dishes were solidly good, so I don't think you can go wrong! My father couldn't name a favorite dish; he just says it depends on what you're in the mood for. My mother thinks everything was a bit too salty for her taste, though; she would personally rank the niku udon the best for the value and salt content and non-heaviness, followed by the mentai cream udon, and then tonkotsu last. She said she would rate this place 4.5/5. Overall, I would definitely return again to try other dishes, like the curry udon that my waiter highly endorsed, or one of the set meals (like the unagi rice bowl with tempura and steamed veggies and mini udon).

I love udon mugizo and this always hits the spot! Portions are pretty for regular sized entrees so keep that in mind, even if you think you're super hungry just get the regular Creamy mentai udon- 9/10 this is super buttery and creamy and delicious, I get chashu on the side to have more protein with this dish. However after half the meal it does get pretty heavy but u can take it togo! Tonkatsu deluxe - 9/10 the soup here is rich and creamy, pairs so well with the udon noodles and the pork they add. They add lots of protein and this bowl is huge. I had to take the regular size home and surprisingly it tasted even better after reheating for a couple days! Onigiri bites 9.5/10 - this surpassed my expectations! Crispy on the outside and soft inside. The bites itself was big and I could probably finish an entire plate to myself and be satisfied Decor is beautiful inside but it's a bit small. Service was not bad, when we went they only had 1 or 2 servers for the entire restaurant so they seemed short staffed so not their fault

Overall: 5 stars Pleasant bowl of warmth for a comfortable lunch. Very thrilled that everything is tasty and packaged well. Gyudon Udon - Set with a little bit of everything from tender beef to tempura crunch in a warm and comforting broth. Pumpkin Tempura - Crisp exterior with a sweet, tender interior as it should. Enhanced by the daikon emulsified dashi dip with some extra saline, this is the perfect side for an udon. Food: +1 Presentation: +1 Price: E Insta/Yelp/Beli: @amei_eats Insta/TikTok: @ameizing.race

Cold Spicy Niku Udon

Another location for Udon Mugizo and they definitely do not disappoint. I've had positive experiences at their Mountain View and San Francisco locations. Their udon dishes are top notch! While the menu is limited to udon, anytime is the right time for noodles. Who knew there is so many variations--cold, creamy, brothy, nabeyaki styles! It's possible to order rice bowls, but why when the restaurant name is clearly UDON! We ordered the Mentai Cream Sauce Udon and Cold Niku Spicy Udon and it was absolutely delicious. I was a bit hesitant with the "spicy" but the spicy was completely harmless, so long as you like spicy. Service was quick and friendly and I wouldn't hesitate to return--definitely a change of pace to all the other ramen places in the area.

Cold Vegetarian Udon

For a delicious udon noodle meal and with patio dining (especially if you have a dog), this is the place to go. They have cold and warm udon noodle meals. For vegetarians, we liked the cold vegetarian udon noodle dish and also kitsune udon noodle dish. Service was friendly and also efficient. We enjoyed dining in the patio because it was a lovely day outside.

Katsu Curry Udon

There was no line when we got there (party of 6) for dinner (thank gawd). Strategy was for each of us to order different kinds of udon..we pretty much ordered the best sellers and yes they were all so good. Food came pretty fast and btw, pictures were a regular size!! Broth for the tonkatsu and beef were tasty and not salty. The mentai I must say was surprisingly not heavy!! It was our favorite We ordered sides of tempura (nothing to rave about). Honestly, we ended up with a lot of to go containers bec there were plenty of food left. My friend ordered the yuzi cocktail which was good but too sweet. The place was nicely decorated and very modern. Service was excellent! 4 stars bec it took forever to get our check. This is def my go to now if I'm craving udon

Tonkotsu Udon Deluxe
Isabella W.

Tried the katsu curry udon, the flavor of the curry was good and the pork cutlet was off to the side so it would remain crispy. There was a side of rice to mix the curry sauce with, and the dish was a huge portion, so it can probably serve 2 people. The tonkatsu udon was amazing - fish powder was available to be added to make the broth more umami, and the soft boiled egg was perfectly cooked. There were 3 slices of chasiu and a decent sized braised pork belly (which makes it the deluxe version). The mentai cream udon had pieces of salmon in it - very interesting dish where it's like the Japanese version of pasta, super creamy and flavorful, and not overly fishy. Been at this restaurant multiple times. The waiters are attentive and always refilling our waters without us asking. The interior is decorated very traditional, which adds to our dining experience.

Spicy Garlic Edamame
Sabrina H.

My go-to udon place! I recently went on a weekday afternoon, around 11:15am and it was relatively empty. It started to get more busy closer to lunch time, as expected. The servers were nice and attentive towards us. Out of the countless times I've gone, I've never had a bad experience with the service! I typically always order the Mentai Cream Sauce Udon, but this time I also ordered the Spicy Garlic Edamame. The udon was delish as usual, with the flavors all mending perfectly without being too heavy. (If you're lactose intolerant I would highly recommend taking a lactaid prior). The edamame on the other hand was just okay. I love me some edamame but this one just felt like they slabbed on some spicy chili sauce on top so the flavor didn't catch as well as I thought it would. Overall just not the flavor profile I had expected for this. Even on busy days it's never too loud, but it's always a good hustle and bustle noise. Definitely recommend for people who haven't tried before!

Came here for dinner on Sunday and waited less than 10min for a table outside. Chicken karaage - dry inside, pass. Corn fritters - good! Tastes exactly like how it sounds. Mental cream udon - Large portions, very rich and creamy. I struggled to finish my udon as it got too rich towards the end Curry udon with tonkotsu - Curry is delicious, flavorful and tonkotsu is well cooked (crispy outside, juicy inside). Servers were attentive despite restaurant being super busy.

8/10/25 I met up with two of my gym friends here for lunch. They were already seated outdoors which was perfect since I brought my furbaby also. The restaurant was very busy and noisy. We got a bowl of edamame and tofu to share. I got the tonkotsu udon with a medium spice level. It didn't taste spicy at all honestly. The broth was pretty light and the flavor overall was delicious. I don't remember what my friends got, but we were all in agreement that everything tasted great and that we would definitely come back.

Beef sukiyaki nabeyaki udon
Ruby Z.

A hit every time! So happy that an udon spot has opened in downtown San Mateo. Cute indoor and small outdoor seating area, recommend going early on the weekend as sometimes theres a wait (you can also join the yelp waitlist!). All the udon are delicious, but my all-time favorite is the mental cream. Savory and umami, perfectly creamy! The nabeyaki udon are great in the winter when you want something warm and soup-y. Recommend!

So when my Boyfriend suggested this place, I was nervous, but after speaking with the owner, I was reassured! The owner hates MSG and said how that's the cheap way to flavor things. He did use a soy sauce with MSG, but all the broths were made without it. I'd just need to read the details beforehand. That's easy! Hee. We ordered 6 plates of items and shared everything. My Boyfriend ordered in Cantonese, so I'm sorry I don't know how to say the dishes names, but the mushroom vegan soup, I ordered that one. Hahaha There was this freaking amazing mushroom appetizer, that's served cold and the mushrooms are dried and then soaked in water and air dry, then soaked again in a specialty sauce, sautéed and chopped and cooled.... And served. Omg! That dish was soooo tasty, we ordered another one and I took the leftovers home. Hahaha The vinaigrette style veggies were sweet and sour, yet smooth and refreshing on such a hot day. Yet the restaurant was cool with AC, so I was excited to try their mushroom soup. Their broth had SOOOO much flavor I could've ate that alone! There were so many different types of mushrooms inside the dish, I couldn't even name them! Hee. The rotti- like flat croissant bread was perfectly crispy and warm. Then we got two dishes of their specialty Peanut Noodle. Once again, I wanted leftovers! Hee. I ate so much, that meal ended up being all the food I ate for the day, but I did get a Matcha at that crazy packed matcha cafe, Izumi Matcha. Check out my review there as well as the 20 minute wait in Suruki Market. Overall, I LOVED all the vast flavors this Chinese restaurant had to offer and especially since it didn't have any MSG! I can't WAIT to go back and get more dishes, again. I'll definitely over order and take home leftovers, once again! Yummmm!

It's a little bit like casual hot pot where the ingredients are pre-selected and presented in a cute set. The broths are authentic, and origin of the noodles tells a tale of a loving wife who crossed a bridge to feed her husband, and didn't want his food to get cold or soggy. Thus, she separated the ingredients and noodles from the pot of insulated broth, and created a traditional Chinese noodle dish. Practically, it's really reminiscent of soup noodles eaten while growing up in a Chinese household, as sometimes you just make a bowl of noodles and throw in a bunch of random ingredients. Be careful when you receive your bowl, as it's holding boiling broth. You typically put in the meat and side ingredients first, followed by the silky and slurpy rice noodles. - Popcorn Chicken They've swapped their popcorn chicken source since my first visit, and it now seems to be thick pieces of juicy chicken meat covered in popcorn-textured crust. It's definitely an improvement, as the first time I had the popcorn chicken, it was a bit too crunchy and hard. - Black Fungus Salad It has a bit more vinegar and is more dried out and rubbery than I'd expect. I'd prefer the black fungus that already comes with most of the noodle options. - Original Crossing Bridge Rice Noodles The traditional flavor uses pork bone soup and beef slices, and is a very comforting taste to Chinese people. It's a delicious, subtly savory broth that also tastes revitalizing. If you imagine Japanese tonkotsu broth that has its creaminess and richness knocked down by 90%, you'll get this - and this is preferable most of the time as it can be eaten daily without feeling too full. I love the mixture of ingredients ranging from various mushrooms, corn, pickled mustard greens, lotus root, quail egg, chives, tofu skin, jujubes, and a small slice of spam. There's just a lot of fun and comforting textures and tastes awaiting for you in this bowl! - Spicy Beef Rice Noodle This tastes much more like a typical malatang offering - very spicy noodle soup with some numbing. While the color looks daunting, I'd say it's not as spicy as you'd actually get at a traditional Sichuan place. They have a weekday lunch special that includes a premade bowl of noodles plus side or drink. During my meal, they had extra soy milk so just offered it on the house - so smooth, creamy, and refreshing! They also have complimentary tea that tastes a bit like barley. The employees who run this Chinese chain are quite nice and gentle, and the interior feels relaxing despite being smaller. Also, they have really good ice cold water.

They took my order quickly and professionally without any unnecessary small talk, which I actually appreciated. I ordered a bowl of tonkotsu ramen, their signature tsukemen (dipping noodles), and a plate of edamame, which is one of my favorite appetizers. The tonkotsu ramen came with thin noodles, very similar to the ones I've had at Ramen Nagi. The texture was excellent, and the broth was flavorful without being overly greasy or salty. It also came with both chashu pork and tender, fatty pork slices, which were incredibly delicious and practically melted in my mouth. As for the tsukemen, the noodles were slightly thicker, with a wonderfully chewy and springy texture. The dipping sauce was rich, thick, and flavorful, with a taste that reminded me of a concentrated miso-based sauce. Both dishes were absolutely delicious and very satisfying! Overall, considering the friendly and efficient service, clean dining environment, delicious food, and reasonable prices, I would highly recommend this restaurant to anyone who loves Japanese ramen. My only suggestion is to avoid peak dining hours unless you're prepared for a long wait. Coming during off-peak hours, like 4 PM, is definitely a great way to enjoy the food without standing in line!

I would tell you to order it for a table of 4 and then order a few other dishes like their fried chicken or roast duck along with a couple extra bowls of rice. Super tender thin sliced fish. Sliced cabbage and mushrooms cooked perfectly. Nice amount of spice and peppercorn heat. Definitely you get the numbing flavors. Note this dish is "one pepper chili scale". And it's pretty spicy. We initially thought to try a "two pepper" dish and asked if spice level can be reduced. She said the broth already is prepared and watering down will not taste good or make much difference. All in all an excellent healthy meal with enough leftovers for one more meal. Place was empty when we arrived around 1pm Saturday.
