(Tough and stubborn) The sticky rice was indeed sticky... possibly mixed with Gorilla Glue.. lacked flavor. My friend's Traditional Shrimp Fried Rice was "Passable".. according to her.. she's very gracious.. The drinks weren't professionally mixed and were very strong... the recipe CLEARLY wasn't followed. It pains me to write this because I love Thai food. I came here one weekend afternoon with a friend. We were sat down quickly in a nice cozy area by a darkened window. We wanted to try a few things so we ordered four appetizers: fried wontons, pan-fired dumplings, chicken satay, and some spicy fried chicken. Everything tasted so blah. I was really hoping for tasty food so I was really disappointed. The only thing with any kick was the fried chicken, and I wouldn't consider that Thai. The service was fine.The ambiance (especially for an afternoon) could be a little brighter. The decor was nice. I'll give this place another shot (as I believe in second chances) if I'm ever in the neighborhood again. But for this first experience it was rather lackluster in taste. read more

This restaurant is quaint and cozy, decently decorated. My husband and I stopped by for a quick lunch and sadly to say I was disappointed. Maybe it was an off day I'm not certain. Appetizers Golden wing: Flavorless and the dipping sauces was nothing to write home about. Calamari: Flavorless, overcooked, The sauce was good. Great little find! I'm not familiar with Brooklyn at all...actually wanted Mexican but didn't like the looks of the place we picked and this was next door. Delightful!! The hostess outside was very friendly and sweet. The food was fresh and flavorful. My cocktail was a little sweet for what I expected but it was good. My mom and sister used to frequent this restaurant and stopped because they said the quality went down. I bought her some food to go and she tasted everything I bought her and said she's excited to start ordering again because it used to be her factor Thai restaurant. The only thing negative I have to say was the behavior of the waitress about tipping. She was very aggressive towards my date which was a bit off putting. My son and I just visited nyc for his first time. We planned to take photos with the Brooklyn Bridge. So, we searched for a Thai restaurant in the area and found Udom Thai. We had Curry Puff, Barbeque Pork, Papaya Salad and Shrimp Tom Yum Fried Rice. All of them were deliciuos and tasted like we ordered specifically. We liked the barbeque pork the most as the pork was tender and fatless, tasting the mixture of Vietnamese and Thai spices - sooo perfect. Worth trying! Highly recommended! read more

Ordered a chicken Hawaiian fried rice and a pad se ew. Got rice with no chicken and spring rolls instead of pad se ew. Called the restaurant, they argued about whether the rice contained chicken or not, and told us to dig through the dish because the chicken must be there somewhere. Dug through the dish with a fork, no chicken. Obviously we got a completely wrong order. Then, we overhear someone in the background saying that 'the customer is lying.' (!) They finally agree to bring the right order, but demanded they get the wrong order back. Were they going to serve this food to other customers after we dug through the whole dish in search of nonexistent chicken?! Ridiculous, uncourteous, unhygienic. read more

Good food, good atmosphere and good service. It was late when my friends and I got there and we felt a bit rushed to order but they were closing the kitchen soon which was understandable. We ordered appetizers and our entrees which came our pretty quickly. The food was tasty and the prices were average. I would definitely go again. We ordered delivery from Seamless and weren't disappointed. Their spice barometer seemed to differ from ours, though. One friend ordered a curry with mild spice and there was zero. I ordered the basil fried rice with medium spice and there was just a hint of it. If you prefer spicier foods, perhaps order a step above what you'd normally choose. Other than that, my only other suggestion is to avoid the scallion pancakes. They aren't what you're imagining; they're dense triangles, almost gelatinous, with speckles of scallions. Dipped in soy sauce, they aren't terrible, but we were a bit shocked when we unpacked them. read more

On a cold Sunday, I arose at 2 pm, surprisingly not hungover but desperately craving thai. There was no way that I was leaving the house but I really really wanted some pad thai. I found this place on yelp where it received mixed reviews. I didn't have high hopes to start off, but I still feel that if you call a place a "Thai" restaurant the ingredients should be fresh and the food should have alot of taste. I had craving for a couple of things so I ordered: basil beef - The sauce was ok but the ingredients were not good. Beef was overdone and barely submerged in the basil sauce. Subpar..the chinese restaurant across the street could make much better! Chicken pad thai - major disappointment, it tasted more like one of those do-it-at-home pad thai kits that come with rice noodles and a mix. It was gross, had barely any taste and the flavor that was present was not appetizing. A complete failure...but there was plenty of tasteless whitemeat chicken though! Papaya salad - WTF was this! It was full of thick slivered carrots and very little papaya and was just...nasty. Peanut dumplings or something like that - These were pretty yummy actually. The peanut dipping sauce was pretty good too! Ugh, I felt like a very unsatisfied and sad fatty! I really, really wanted to give Udom a better review because they're in our neighborhood, but I just can't. I had panang curry, which was overly spicy without any real depth of flavor and the chicken didn't taste like chicken and was rock hard. My girlfriend had the Pad See Ew, and she ended up picking out the beef because it didn't have any flavor and looked and tasted like rubber. As for the feel of the restaurant, they use neon lighting under frosted plexiglass at the bar. It's kind of tacky. Well, it's safe to say this New Restaurant in the Hood has been tempting me for months and months. It has been sitting there looking like the shell of a restaurant since the summer and then finally it had a sign that said THAI FOOD COMING SOON in there maybe about two months ago. BYOB, neon bar (no drinks in it), real nice Asian waitresses, did I mention it's BYOB? Runch specials at 6 or 7 dollars, with spring roll AND soup (not OR soup). It's reasonable at night too!!! Eliza and I went. I had pad see ew (can someone PLEASE JUST TELL ME WHAT THIS REALLY IS sometimes it is flat noodles with brown and broc, sometimes it is spicy thinnies) that was $7. You know, I liked it, but to tell the truth I'm a real "quantity over quality" guy and would prefer to be chewing on a mountain-sized box of noodles with a little broc than a wide plate with lots of veggies, mitigating the huge number of noodles there could be (price, etc) so that was the only thing that kept me from giving it five stars, not enough noodles. Eliza got the "combination rice" or something that was TWELVE dollars but luckily it had all different kinds of fish in there. Listen, I am picky about any kind of Asian food because I have had too many crappy experiences. Now that I have experienced awesome versions of each, my expectations are high! It's safe to say that with the addition of a Thai restaurant on Washington Avenue, the neighborhood isn't looking back. Next thing you know, we'll even get a coffee shop! I think there's enough hair salons and liquor stores already, don't you? And the surprising thing is, Udom ain't half bad. In fact, I would challenge you to come up with a better Thai restaurant in that great Yuppie haven to the West. wow, I don't know if I've just been incredibly lucky or if all the other reviews were incredibly unlucky or have unrealistic standards for thai food....but I have eaten at Udom at least three times and have only been pleased. I've had their grass noodles, pad thai, and shrimp fried rice and enjoyed them all. I have plenty of veggies and tofu and maybe 5 or 6 shrimps, which is decent. I did wish my pad thai had a little more spice and peanut sauce, but it didn't ruin my meal. I'm definitely going to eat there again, so you should give it a try, too! read more

Jeeze, I feel the need to give Udom some love - because it deserves it! This place is just around the corner from where I live and on my walk home from the subway. The dinner prices are slightly below average - $8 for curry and $7 for noodle or rice dishes (this if for vegetable and tofu options). I have their number programmed into my cell phone and can place a call when I'm at Vanderbilt and it's ready when walk in 5-10 minutes later. The green curry is fantastic and is what I end up eating almost once a week. I also love their Pad Ki Mao and suspect that the noodles are hand-made in the restaurant because they are very different (in a good way!) than any other place I've tried. So the food and the prices are good, but my favorite thing about Udom is the staff. Each time come in to order the cashier girl asks if I would like to have some water and strikes up a really nice little chat with me while I wait. I probably wouldn't go there as much she didn't make it such a pleasant experience. I'm thrilled that this place is in my neighborhood and am always pleased to note that each week it seems that more people are in the restaurant when I stop by. read more

I was expecting the worst but was pleasantly surprised by many of the things on the menu. We only had delivery, so I can't comment on service or decor. Appetizers ======== Shrimp Dumplings: B- Not as flavorful as I was hoping. A bit dry. Golden Wings: A These are spectacular wings. Char-Broiled and tasty. Curry Puffs: A- Light, tasty and delicious. Only fault is that it tastes like it was cooked in margarine rather than real butter. Giant Shrimp Rolls: A Big shrimp coated with batter. Inside batter is buttery and soft. Outside is crispy. Absolutely delicious. Salmon Dumplings: F Inedible. Smelled like rotten fish. Grilled BBQ Pork: B Meat was rubbery and flavor was slightly weird - can't tell if the flavor is sweet or not. Some may like that faux-sweetness; I don't. Soup ==== Lemongrass Tom Yum Soup: B+ Lacking the "accoutrements" of Tom Yum (lemon grass stalks, kaffir lime leaves, etc) but otherwise a very, very nice flavor. I'd get it a second time. Tom Kha: C+ Terrible. Tasted like pure coconut milk with no lime, fish or spice at all. The ingredients were good: at least they used authentic straw mushrooms rather than button mushrooms. Chef's Signature Dishes ================== Mongolian Beef: B The noodles were awful. Wasteful calories. However, the dish is tasty. Sauce is great: brown and gingery but the beef is a tad hard to chew. Over all flavor is a tad too gingery (and I love ginger!) Roasted Honey Ribs: A Phenomenal cuts of meat. Nicely marinated and very well cooked. Not overly sweet. I loved these and would definitely order them again. Desserts ======= Mango Sticky Rice: C I just didn't care for it, but I'm not a huge fan of sticky rice. Beverages ======== Thai Iced Coffee: B- Nice flavor, but not enough cream/milk. Really? Did I get really lucky? My friend who lives in the area thinks not. He orders from Udom all the time. We got the pad thai, green papaya salad, calamari, and basil seitan. Everything was really good! I was particularly impressed with the basil seitan, it had great flavor and texture, and I am really quite the meat eater, so I think it's a good compliment for Udom! Yes, the pad thai could use a bit more peanut sauce or spice or both as Holly mentioned, but I think that can be resolved while ordering in the following fashion: Me: Can you please give me some peanut sauce on the side? I ordered delivery for the first time tonight and got the pineapple red curry with tofu and veggies and the shrimp dumplings. BOO! The curry tasted like water. The vegetables are CLEARLY canned and old. The tofu is chewy. It was probably the most bland food I've ever had. And the dumplings are actually, legitimately, disgusting. They were cold to the touch, as in, chilled (so much for "steamed hot dumplings"). I understand it's delivery, but the guy got here super quick. They were clearly pulled from a fridge and probably wouldn't be good if I even heated them up. Udom is an always-pleasing standby. I've never had a bad dish from here, neither take-out or dine-in. It's certainly not the most amazing Thai food anyone could ever ask for, but it's still very good (and it's in Prospect Heights... need I say more?). Take-out orders are always fulfilled very quickly -- once ordered, it's usually ready by the time I leisurely walk the three-ish blocks to pick up the food (giving a 5-min head start for good measure, of course). Favorites are: - Pad Thai (served not with a super-sweet, gooey peanut sauce like most places, but a tasteful coating of the rice noodles with crushed peanuts sprinkled on top, always with a lime wedge for flavor/garnish), - Pineapple Fried Rice (everything in the dish is always in perfect proportion and well-cooked -- my top favorite for sure). Bottom line: for a little cash, you can have a solid, delicious, filling, well-made meal in 10-15 minutes that will make you want to order from them again. read more

I've been going here since the place opened in 2007. The staff is always friendly and is pretty quick. I thought it wouldn't last, but they are still nice. It's not the best but it is tasty. It is the best chicken pad thai in the neighborhood, in my opinion. The pineapple fried rice is really good. I cannot say the same for the delivery. I order from this place all the time and it makes complete sense the myriad of reviews this places gets. A lot of times they're great, but when they suck, they REALLY suck. I once had an order of dumplings with peanut sauce and in one of the dumplings was a piece of steel wool. Yes. Steel fucking wool. I was shocked. I'm like I'm NEVER ordering from these people AGAIN! But I've never had any other problems with them and their food is fast, and usually delicious. I've introduced at least 5 other people to this place who have loved what they got - Pad Thai w/ shrimp is good. Pad See Ew, good. (Beef not so good) Crispy calimari can sometimes be slightly rubbery, but comes with a great plum sauce. Roasted cashew chicken is GREAT! Roommates love spicy basil rice. You get the picture. I have eaten in the restaurant twice now, and ordered once. All three times the food has been delicious! The dishes are large, but not greasy or heavily sauced, and super reasonably priced. Last night my partner and I ordered 3 apps and an entree each, plus a large bottle of sake to split- bill came to $50- including tip!!
