We were a little disappointed by Uchi DC, especially because it had been highly recommended by a friend. Overall, we'd give the food 3/5, although the service was excellent. The kinoko usuzukuri (3/5) was light and refreshing, and we really enjoyed the shiso, but it was far too acidic for our taste. The seaweed salad (4/5) was probably one of the better dishes of the evening. The unagi nigiri (2.5/5) was the biggest disappointment. Our first order was noticeably over-charred, so we ordered it again, but the second serving was very thin and had a strong fishy taste. The eel simply didn't taste particularly fresh or high-quality. We're quite particular about unagi and have had some truly excellent versions in Japan, so this fell well short of what we were hoping for. We also waited a very long time for the karaage (3/5). Our server kindly removed it from the bill, which we appreciated, but the dish itself felt more like American fried chicken than Japanese karaage--the coating was too thick rather than thin, crisp, and juicy. The accompanying sauce was also overly salty. The other rolls and wagyu dishes were fine but fairly forgettable, around 3/5. Desserts were decent. A particularly thoughtful touch was that our server brought us a complimentary jasmine cream dessert after remembering that we had wanted to try it earlier. Unfortunately, we could barely taste any jasmine in it. Service was easily the highlight: 4.5/5. Our server was attentive, thoughtful, and handled the delays very graciously. The prices were also quite reasonable, especially during happy hour. As for the atmosphere, we found the decor a little bland and lacking the refinement or character we associate with good Japanese restaurants. The music was also surprisingly loud--it felt more like a nightclub at times, which didn't really suit the food or the setting. Overall, great service and reasonable prices, but the food itself was only average for us. Given the recommendation and Uchi's reputation, we went in with fairly high expectations and left somewhat disappointed.

Review for the Bar & Happy Hour I came on a Friday, and the bartenders were very attentive and nice. The Sake (salmon nigiri) was my favorite. I ended up ordering it three times--it's $10 for two pieces. I also loved the seaweed salad and Avocado nigiri, you get two pieces for $6.75. I was disappointed with the hand rolls, and the cocktails were overpowered by so much juice. It felt like I was drinking a mocktail. I would say pass on the drinks. Happy Hour gets packed quickly, so I highly recommend coming early. It starts at 4 p.m. and ends at 6 p.m.

Memorable experience overall! Spontaneous trip to DC and the first sushi restaurant I had postpartum and I could not have picked a better place. Everything felt well put together. Food was phenomenal! The service really added to the experience, everyone was so welcoming and our server was extremely thorough in explaining the menu items. My only downside was the price; it was definitely on the pricier side. Still, a great spot if you don't mind splurging a little!

This place is absolutely fantastic. I went here for happy hour. They have happy hour everywhere at the restaurant. My friend and I did the happy hour 9 course menu for 120 dollars for 2 people, which was a wonderful deal. Everything was absolutely fantastic, especially the sushi and the sashimi and walu walu. I would definitely come back here again. The ambiance is great. Our service was outstanding and we even had an extra course from the kitchen. It does get quite crowded so make sure to have a reservation.

Great experience at Uchi and I am undoubtedly going back! We had an early reservation and were immediately seated. The inside of Uchi is small, but intimate. The lighting is just right -- not too dark. We started the evening with the Hama Chili and Lobster Nimono. Both dishes were excellent. The Lobster Nimono was my favorite. The chunks of lobster were sizeable and had enough coconut curry for a memorable, but not overpowering experience. Of course, being an oyster aficionado, I had to try that as well. The added lemon ponzu was a nice touch. For entrees, we tried the Softshell Crab roll and Zero Sen roll. The Softshell crab roll had a lot of texture; you have the crunch from the fried crab and pickled cucumbers, while the cilantro added an interesting -- but welcoming -- flavor. I would get this again. The Zero Sen was a great choice also. It included yellowtail, avocado, shallot and cilantro. All-in-all, a great time and great food. Definitely try for yourself. Cheers!

I'll be damned, my previous experience is such a faint memory after giving Uchi another shot. Phil and the entire team completely changed my perspective. This is why the whole city is talking about Uchi. From the moment our cocktails hit the table, to the seamless pacing of every dish, to the staff sharing their favorite recommendations and making every course feel intentional, this was a 100/10 experience. And whatever you do, don't skip the coconut tapioca for dessert! What really sets Uchi apart is that it truly has something for everyone. Whether you're vegan, have dietary restrictions, or are looking for some of the best wagyu and sushi in the city, the menu delivers without compromise. Pair that with an exceptional wine and cocktail program, and it's easy to see why people rave about this place. Huge credit to the team for showing what hospitality should look like. They turned me from someone who wasn't sure I'd ever return into someone who can't wait to come back. Uchi has absolutely earned its reputation.

Happy hour tasting menu is a great deal! WHAT I ORDERED * yuzu spritz $6 during happy hour and you can't beat it * happy hour tasting menu for 2. THE GOOD a lot of variety of food, not sushi forward so you get to try different dishes. Pretty unique and refreshing for the area and similar offerings. Customer service is fantastic. We were greeted by multiple employees, same when we were leaving. Our server checked on us multiple times to ensure we had a great experience. PRO TIP get there early for happy hour. The place fills up fast. BOTTOM LINE can't wait to come again and the other menus.

Delicious! I tried Uchi in another city while on work travel and was excited to see it come to DC. The food is delicious. It is not cheap but I do feel like you get what you're paying for overall. The service is also great though we did have a hiccup but they quickly resolved once aware and I was very happy. I ordered an assortment of nigiri as well as hot rock wagyu and other things. You can check out my pictures. My favorite was the otoro. It melts in your mouth! I recommended it to the couple next to me at the sushi counter and the guy loved it but said he could only have one because it's so rich. I had 4 lol. I also really liked the hot rock wagyu. I thought it was better than the wagyu tartar if you have to pick one. I thought the uni was also fresh though I always feel like however much I'm given of uni that is never enough. You can never gave too much uni. The dessert was also very unique. It had more cilantro flavor than expected but the balance in the dessert is quite good if you get all the layers at once. I was not sure at first but liked it more with each bite as I acclimated. Service was great - food orders went through the chef assigned at the counter and drinks went through the waiter. It was very busy yet they stayed very professional yet friendly. There is also valet parking but I did not see anyone at the kiosk so ended up in the garage down the street nearby. Valet is $20 I think and the garage is $25. I would definitely go again! Maybe not an everyday thing but as a treat unless work is paying then I wouldn't mind going more! You can also go and just order a bit. Some folks were probably more reasonable in what they ordered vs me going HAM. There is also a hh but I think that's without a reservation and first come first serve for spots.

I've heard phenomenal things about Uchi in Texas and was glad that there was a location in DC. Happened to be in DC for my birthday, so I made it a must go during my trip. I had an amazing time here -- terrific atmosphere, modern decor, and an awesome music selection. The service was impeccable and the staff went above and beyond to make my birthday memorable. Scott was knowledgeable and made sure we were well taken care of. We gave him free rein to choose our sushi and entrees after listening to our personal preference. The food was delicious and sushi was incredibly fresh and well-seasoned. It's honestly impossible to pick out my favorite of the night, but the kinoko nabe blew me away. Every dish was perfectly executed and brought out all its flavor in such a delicate and balanced way. The desserts (especially the fried milk) lived up to its hype as well -- sweet, refreshing and a great way to top the meal off. I had an enjoyable time here, all thanks to Scott and the entire team! I could go on and on about my time here, so I'd def find my way back.

Date night at Uchi was everything we hoped it would be and then some! After hearing so many great things about Uchi, we finally decided to visit for date night and opted for the 7-course Signature Tasting Menu. If you're someone who enjoys putting yourself in the chef's hands and being surprised throughout the meal, this is absolutely the way to go. Before we even sat down, I was impressed by the space itself. The restaurant is much larger than I expected, with beautiful modern wood architecture and design throughout. The wraparound bar creates a stunning focal point and is the only seating area that doesn't require a reservation. There also appeared to be two private dining rooms, making the space suitable for everything from date nights to larger celebrations. The hostesses were welcoming and greeted us immediately upon arrival. We were about 10 minutes early, so our table wasn't quite ready and we waited briefly in the small vestibule area. Once seated, our server was kind, attentive, and happy to answer questions about the menu. I especially appreciated the thoughtful pacing of the meal, which allowed us to fully enjoy each course without feeling rushed. Because the tasting menu changes daily and seasonally, every experience is unique, but ours was a beautiful progression of flavors, textures, and creativity. We started with cool tastings that included Uchi Salad and Uchi's famous Hama Chili. The salad ended up being my favorite course of the evening, while the yellowtail paired with citrus and Thai chili was bright, fresh, and beautifully balanced. The chef-selected nigiri showcased the quality and freshness of the fish, while the hot tastings brought comforting richness to the meal. The Brussels sprouts were packed with flavor and quickly became one of my favorite bites. The Kinoko Nabe with seasonal mushrooms, tentsuyu, koshihikari rice, egg yolk, and gyutoro was absolutely phenomenal. Of course, we couldn't leave without dessert. Uchi's famous Fried Milk more than lived up to the hype. The combination of vanilla custard, salted fudge, and toasted blondie created the perfect sweet ending to an already incredible meal. From the beautiful atmosphere to the attentive service and thoughtfully curated menu, Uchi delivered a memorable dining experience from start to finish. I highly recommend checking it out and treating yourself to the chef's tasting menu. I'll certainly be back to see what the chefs dream up next.

The service was amazing other than the one hostess (long black curly hair, kind of tan) who seemed waspy as anything the rest of the staff was fantastic! The vibes were pretty nice too, we sat at the bar to start our night since we got to the restaurant a little early after leaving the NatGeo museum; the non alcoholic options were fantastic. The food was pretty good for the most part but the soft shell crab roll was a bit on the fishier side which was quite strange since I've have soft shell crab before plenty of times and never experienced anything like this. We will likely be back for happy hour!

I really wish I had the chance to visit again to see if I could have a better experience the second time. But alas I was traveling and popped in for a late light dinner. In all, the service was mediocre, the vibes were a little off for me, though the food was definitely higher on the spectrum when it comes to Sushi. I sat down at the bar and when I declined ordering a cocktail, I could tell the Bartender was a little annoyed. I was looking for some suggestions and he also seemed a bit put off that I was planning to put in a small order. Honestly, I had just traveled all day and just wanted a little something because it was late. To my right, there was a couple who ordered this interesting dish where you cook your steak on a hot rock, except for the fact that the smoke from the cooking went right into my face, and I was literally smoked out sitting there. I actually had to move because it was affecting me so much. Perhaps something to think about in an intimate dining setting when it comes to menu choices. The other challenge, which really is no fault of the restaurant, potentially.... there was a group of women celebrating something who kept ordering drinks, and with every round, got louder and louder. Honestly, at a high priced intimate sushi restaurant, maybe it's not the place to sing your own version of karaoke at a table when other people are trying to enjoy a dining experience. As someone who can appreciate high-quality Sushi, that definitely hit the mark, but I had a hard time enjoying it with everything else going on. The tuna was excellent. Edamame was extremely tasty. And funny, I found that the seaweed used and Rice was absolutely perfect. The salmon piece with sake was OK. With so many other spots like this in the area, I really hope that they work on their service and ambience.

Yes I committed the sin of ordering just sushi at a kaiseki restaurant, gasp! So I guess I did this to myself since I found the food to be just ok. The spicy tuna roll was just not happening since all they did was drizzle hot sauce over the roll. I've been noticing this more at places, can we just say tuna roll with spicy dipping sauce instead? It's a bit misleading... but I guess I'll have to make sure to ask everywhere whenever I order spicy tuna. I am a believer in that if you're eating at a good restaurant and you ordered their less popular menu item that it should still be good but in this case, Ko didn't deliver. The croquettes were $18 for just two, but it didn't have as much crab as comparable croquettes I've had for less, and it felt under-seasoned. The standout was the garlic rice, funnily enough, and the eel tamago dish for me. The other savory dishes were just okay, and really none of them were something I would order again at this price point. The cod in particular disappointed me by being so bland. I did love the ice cream we ordered at the end, although each of us ordered a separate flavor and they confused us a bit by combining them at random in 2 bowls for 5 people. Honestly, I think my views are being colored slightly by the service, which was poor across the board. I would have been more generous with my rating if I felt the service was good or friendly, but to have cold service and high prices and tiny portions and unimpressive flavors made me feel less inclined to return. Still, it wasn't bad food, just mediocre - I wouldn't go back but I wouldn't warn anyone away, if that makes sense. Looking at the other reviews now, it seems we weren't the only ones to receive poor service, so it wasn't just an off night. The prices are one thing, but when you compare the service to an izakaya in Japan it's a pretty stark difference, right?

Excellent service, the food was great and not outrageously priced (considering the area), and looked amazing inside! The decor and the lighting is makes it a cozy and intimate place but also great for a large party as well We booked our experience during restaurant week, we love trying out new places and their restaurant week menu offered a little bit of everything. We got some champagne to start, ordered some cocktails after, and the food started rolling in. We started with a caviar bump, and moved into the beetroot salad (which was amazing and so flavorful, we both wanted more), had the Tataki/carpaccio style followed by the nigiri/sashimi, then for the main course - the winner/volcano lobster roll. We didn't want our night to end there, there were so many great options in the menu so we opted to hold off on our desert and ordered some more food We got the sushi dinner dish to share along with the lavender smoked salmon Tataki style. Definitely could've eaten more after but decided to end our night after that, and had our ice cream to finish the night (matcha ice cream and raspberry sorbet) The service was 11/10, our waiter was extremely knowledgeable and all of the other waitstaff was extremely kind and was more than willing to help us with any questions or things we needed. The restaurant was very clean and they had nice bathrooms. The quality of the food was amazing and every dish had us hungry for more. This is definitely a place we'll be coming to again and will be recommending to everyone

Birthday dinner brought us to Kyojin Sushi on a Monday night, and while the food definitely…read moreimpressed, the service kept this from being a five-star experience. We had a reservation for 7:30 p.m. for a party of 12, and I think that was the first issue. A group our size really needed a dedicated server, but instead we had one server covering our entire section. To be fair, he may have been stretched thin, but unfortunately, the service itself also left a lot to be desired. We were seated at 7:30, but our drink orders weren't taken until around 7:50. Then he disappeared for another 20 minutes before returning to take additional drink orders from people who had arrived later. We were ready to order food, but kept hearing, "I'll be right back." Throughout the night, drinks and items were forgotten. One friend finished her first glass of wine, ordered a second, and didn't receive it until we were literally asking for the check. At that point... we're leaving, friend. To make matters worse, several menu items we wanted weren't available. The mochi? Sold out. The Wagyu? Sold out. There were three or four different items people at our table ordered that were unavailable. On a Monday, that was a little surprising. Now for the good part... the sushi was REALLY good. I ordered the Yume Roll and the Tiger Roll, and both were incredibly fresh. The Yume Roll was especially unique and one of my favorite specialty rolls I've had in a while. It was made with spicy tuna, avocado, seared tuna, jalapeño, spicy mayo, eel sauce, and crunchy tempura bits, which gave it the perfect combination of heat, texture, and richness. The Tiger Roll was another standout, made with lump crab, avocado, cucumber, spicy mayo, steamed tiger shrimp, and a mango tobiko sauce. The combination of flavors was fresh, light, and perfectly balanced. I also ordered the edamame with the spicy black garlic sauce, and I absolutely loved that twist. It was a nice change from the usual salted edamame. One dish that completely missed the mark was the Tempura Rice with Chicken, which I shared with the table. Unfortunately, this was the only thing we ordered that I genuinely didn't enjoy. The chicken was dark meat, lacked seasoning, and honestly tasted like it had come straight from a bag of frozen Tyson nuggets. It didn't have the crispy, flavorful bite I was expecting and felt completely out of place compared to how fresh and well-executed the sushi was. I'd definitely skip this one on my next visit. My cocktail was just as impressive as the food. It was made with Ilegal Mezcal, pomegranate, hibiscus yuzu, simple syrup, and egg white, and it was absolutely gorgeous. The egg white gave it a silky, frothy finish, while the pomegranate and hibiscus yuzu added a bright, slightly tart flavor that paired beautifully with the subtle smokiness of the mezcal. It was as pretty as it was delicious. The restaurant itself is gorgeous. It's tucked away in an alley, so it's a little easy to miss, but once you're inside, the space is modern, spacious, and has a really cool stone bar that gives the restaurant a sleek, upscale vibe. I was also pleasantly surprised by the prices. Specialty rolls ranged from about $12-$20, with only a few premium options around $25. The edamame was about $8, so overall I thought the pricing was very fair, especially for Georgetown. Would I come back? Yes... but probably with a much smaller group. The food and ambiance are worth another visit, but I'd definitely be hoping for a better service experience next time. I also hope they have a better handle on inventory because I'd still love to try the Wagyu and finish dinner with the mochi.

He walked me through the options and ordering was a breeze. The price point is a little higher than your average all you can eat dining experience, but well worth it. I must've had 15 pieces of nigiri. Having worked in a sushi restaurant I can tell you it was phenomenally well done. Beautifully fresh and buttery and the sushi rice was perfect. The eel kamameshi was a highlight and came with a showing amount of eel. Finished everything off with the matcha tiramisu and a cup of green tea. I won't need to eat for days. Will definitely be coming back! Thank you Kay and team!

First off, let me just say.... If I'm honest, whenever I…read moreshow up to an AYCE I'm always skeptical with the quality of the food, especially when it comes to sushi but wow, I was blown away how great it was for AYCE. The set- up and the ambiance is very comfortable and sleek/modern with the main sushi chefs in the middle and the tables around them. The tables have waiters and a tablet at the table like most hot pot/kbbq places and you can order everything off of there. I have only been here once and wanted to try to low tier without going "all in" on the top tier option of diamond without knowing how the basics would taste. Let me say if the bottom tier was as good as it was, I'm excited to come back to try the next tier! Anyway, the basic tier already comes with a lot of sushi options and should be enough for those who are craving just sushi. All of the cuts of nigiri was great, all tender with great flavor, but what stood out to me the most was actually the yellowtail, super buttery and great flavor. The eel was also a top choice! All the rolls were good basic to the fancier ones, I would say that most of the bang for the buck would be the nigiri. The rolls are good but a little too much rice for me personally. The appetizers, didn't spend too much time on them but the chicken karaage was solid and the seaweed salad was my two favorite. Overall, super solid for the price and I'd totally want to go again to try more of their options! 100% recommend!
