A host can define an experience for a restaurant. They are the initial impression. I had been to…read moreCleaver East several times over the years, and wanted to stop by for a drink and some appetizers to share with my family that was visiting. I asked, by chance, if there were any tables. The hostess reacted appalled that we would even ask. Followed up to ask if we could sit at the empty bar. She shrugged and said we couldn't order appetizers. We went to the bar, and who was a manager took our drinks and asked if we would like anything to eat - she was wonderful and welcoming. The chicken wings, arancini and truffle fries were tasty but not exceptional by any means. I've enjoyed brunch off season as well as dinner. Hopefully, this was just an inexperienced host. Not a good experience overall. Never felt comfortable.

We visited Cleaver East on a trip to Ireland that I extended over the weekend so I could get some…read moredowntime. This place was highly recommended by a colleague that I trusted, so i booked a table at 9pm on Saturday night through their website. It's located in Temple Bar, but it's no low-quality Temple Bar tourist trap. It immediately reminded me of one of our favorite restaurants back home in NYC's East Village (Saxon+Parole) - well designed, hip, great lighting and a busy buzz. We were seated promptly and ordered cocktails - one was great (Rosemary Old Fashioned) and the other, not so much (The Cleaver East signature cocktail - maybe it was off that night?). We decided to go ahead with the chef's selection tasting menu for 50 euros which, in retrospect, was worth every penny. I will say that every dish presented to us was beautiful and delicious. I don't think I can say one bad thing about the food. Highlights included a delicious goat cheese flan to start, an amazing duck breast and an excellent duo of desserts - six courses in total. To finish, we were presented with fresh chocolate pots with orange, which I thought was pretty damn uninventive upon initial inspection. I was wrong, however - I'm not sure what was in there, but it was the most delicious chocolate pot I've ever had. I wanted a second one before leaving. I think it's a solid 4-to-4.5 star review, but falls short of 5. Service was VERY friendly, but it was slow at times. We felt the pace of the meal could have been a bit quicker and our server could have been a bit more accessible (she disappeared for long periods of time). None of this was too critical, however. The overall experience was fantastic.
