Had an amazing experience as my first time getting a massage. The place is clean and very calming, and the guy is super nice.

I hate giving this one star as the barber there Geoff is exceptional and a master in his craft. I…read moreonly started to go because Geoff is an exceptional barber who owned his own shop previously and managed others before. He is one of the most friendly and cleanest barbers I've ever met so when he started working here I was excited. I have never left any review of any place in my life, but I had to since this was such a terrible experience. The only problem I've had here is with their manager Alana! I am not sure if she just hates men, or has never managed anywhere before, but was the most unprofessional manager I've ever encountered. I have 20 years of management experience and I am now a Director in my field. I have trained managers and staff for years. I know how managers should treat their staff and clients and was truly shocked at her behavior. Every time I've gone there prior, I have been greeted with a smile and offered a drink. She barely looked up at me and I had to ask if she could check me in. Strange I thought but whatever. They always offer a drink, even if I don't want one and almost always so no thank you. She didn't offer me anything other than a cold, sit down he will be with you soon. I was so put off right away! Then as I waited, she openly mocked another man who worked there with another staff she directly managed. She did it loud enough so everyone could hear her, it seemed intentional and I was shocked she did it so openly. I was thinking wow, what is going on here today so weird. The whole time I got my haircut she kept walking by the barber making insults and saying his area wasn't clean, or just weird remarks. At one point I did ask him if she was joking and he just shook his head and didn't address it. She seemed like she was harassing him honestly like a weird power trip that was meant to publicly embarrass him. She kept glaring over at us and was talking loud enough that we could hear her insult him, again very very unprofessional and awkward. If I were him I would have quit right there. However he kept his cool and didn't say a word to his credit. He must be used to it, but with many years experience in management, I can see that it was an intentional power trip at best, at worst discrimination. I wanted to get up and leave honestly but he wasn't even close to being done with my hair. She then came over again and mind you while he was working on my haircut, which is a fade and takes lots of concentration, she made another insult to him and then began to rip out his wheelie cabinet they use to hold their barber tools and made a scene basically yelling she know there was hair under there. I was so put off by that, that is something that could be addressed in between clients or before or after work, but again it was clearly her just harassing him because she cannot handle her title. So under the cabinet; there was like nothing there except like a tiny clump of hair. I couldn't believe she did that and nothing was there and i could see under the womens cabinets there were more than his so it was clearly intentional and just so odd. Honestly I don't like using this word, but unhinged is the only one to best describe it. Like a mother yelling at her child, only he is much older and clearly a much calmer better employee. Ive never met a manager who didn't want business; but every time I go they book a follow up and usually great. Alana didn't even look up at me, had a scowl on her face and didn't even ask me when I could book my next appointment. I waited for her to ask and/ or just look at me, but when she finally looked up it was a death glare, clearly in her own world so I didn't even bother asking to book my next one. When she checked me out it was so tense and awkward, she was very clearly angry at something but it couldn't have been me as I've never met her. My wife and daughters just started going there for their haircuts as well, but after telling my wife she now refused to go back and is trying a new place. She did mention she also was waiting for her haircut and heard a worker there insulting men and even had the girls take a walk so they didn't hear it. We respect everyone in our household and try not to subject our girls to sexism or hatred of anyone. My wife wasn't sure if it was the same person i encountered, but my best guess is that it was as the rest of the staff seem great, despite the horrible management. Again never in my life have I seen a manager so blatant with either sexism or incompetence or both. My family and I were about to get the entire family membership at Lifetime which is extremely expensive as our kids take swimming and gymnastics too, but due to Alana's unprofessional unhinged behavior we decided to not waste our money. If that is who they hire to manage the spa I can only imagine how poor the rest of their management team is. I have sent a message to the general manager as well. I am waiting on their response.

I come here mainly on weekends, when my home Y closes way the heck too early (4pm vs 7pm here)…read more I'd say that about 70-80% of their equipment is fine. Lots of free weights and strength machines. The highlight is the huge, high-ceilinged (30-40ft?) functional fitness space that features a turf area, a sled, kettlebells, plyo boxes, plyo smash balls, a do-it-all calisthenics multi-station that includes weighted pulleys, dip and pullup and monkey bars, a free hanging real boxing bag (nice angled uppercut bag that's just the right weight to make you "dance" to avoid the swing back, yet forgiving enough that you can punch it without gloves without risking a broken wrist or bruised knuckles), a pair of Assault bikes and treadmills, a Concept rower, some meh Schwinn stationary bikes (more on that later), and two full squat cages with plenty of plates and barbells. So, what about the other 20-30%, you ask? Well, their cardio machines range from so-so to unusably lousy. All the treadmills are Precor, which are a clear step down from the Life Fitness TMs most Ys have: smaller uglier fuzzy screens with spotty internet connection that can freeze up in the middle of a workout, noisier and less stable platform. The stationary bikes are a mix of Precor (typical mediocre gym bike with crap ergonomics where you feel like you're on a creaky toy bike pedaling against some barbaric pad not magnetic resistance) and Espresso (video-gaming type bike clearly designed to seduce ADD teenagers or lazy af adults) and the horrible Schwinn bikes (just as bad as most home exercise bikes, you can understand why people mostly use them as clothes hangers). Please please please can you guys get at least a few KEISER bikes? We know you can have decent taste in cardio machines because you kept your CONCEPT rowers instead of choosing some oversized gym-brand rowers which look impressive but have similarly lousy ergonomics. Oh and they have non-mechanical Assault brand treadmills which nobody uses because they are brutal on the knees, too narrow and unstable. I don't know who was in charge of choosing the cardio equipment, but that person needs to be put to work cleaning the bathrooms or something more appropriate! The other major gripe I have is their sauna --- it's spacious and new and pretty, but who in the hell decided to have only ONE row of seating? Completely idiotic, folks: did you not pass seventh grade Life Science, where they teach you that heat RISES, and that's why all real saunas have TWO levels of seating, with the 2nd one being a good 4-5 feet off the ground so that you get the full benefit of the heat in the room? Here you have to STAND on the damned low benches if you want to get a decent sweat in ... the sauna thermometer reads 170F but if you're sitting down you'd be lucky to get 140-150F, which is useless. (The sauna of the Melrose YMCA has the same idiotic mistake.) So, while I'm grateful that this Y offers me decent hours to work out on weekends making the long drive out there worthwhile, their cardio machines selection and sauna design really really need a rethink.
