I first learned about UCM when they were a sub-contractor for my bathroom renovation project. The project involved relocating all of the bathroom fixtures and rerouting some plumbing and HVAC lines for a bathroom above it. The project required attention to detail and precision, as it was a tight space. Dustin from UCM delivered. More recently I contracted with UCM to install 3 Mitsubishi mini-splits, after soliciting bids from them and 2 of their main competitors. Dustin's work was again great. I asked him to run the lines for the mini-splits within the walls, because I didn't want them running on the exterior of the house. He thoughtfully and carefully cut out the drywall so it was easy to restore. He also readily accommodated my request to ensure the installation was not only efficient, effective, but also aesthetically pleasing on the outside of the house. A few unrelated issues came up as we were scheduling the work (e.g., need for code-compliant water line for refrigerator; need to fix water and waste lines for washing machine; need to change out UV light and filter for house water) and he readily incorporated them into his schedule. This was a 2 day project using the 1st day to remove the old system and seal ducts and day 2 to install and test the new system. They arrived on time with all the necessary parts and equipment to handle any potential problems. During the duct sealing process, it was determined that the existing duct structure had the equivalent of a 25.8 square hole. After sealing, this was reduced to the equivalent of a 2.3 square inch hole. IMPRESSIVE ! The new system was installed per plan and has been running well for over a month which includes one or two 90 degree days. It is so quiet that one can hardly hear it. Beginning in 2018, I paid more than $13,000 for a mini-split system designed to accommodate three indoor units. I recently learned from another HVAC company that the condenser JSP installed is undersized for the system and, more importantly, is not the condenser that was specified in the estimate and documentation and that I paid for. I have the original paperwork and receipts confirming the discrepancy. I have also been advised that the system has been overtaxed, potentially affecting its performance and longevity. For months, I have requested copies of my invoices, work orders, warranties, and extended warranty documentation so my current HVAC provider can make necessary repairs. Emails, calls, and written correspondence have largely gone unanswered from the local home office and parent company. I ultimately stopped using JSP after a family member's credit card, provided for a one-time service call, was subsequently charged for a service plan without authorization, and JSP declined to reverse the charges. (Appointments were frequently cancelled and rescheduled without regard for my time which was another frustration.) After months of unsuccessful attempts to resolve these matters directly, I have filed complaints with the Better Business Bureau and the New York State Attorney General's Office. I have documentation supporting the concerns outlined above and believe JSP should explain why the equipment installed differs from what I was quoted and paid for. This is especially disappointing because when John Parker owned and operated JSP, I was a strong supporter and referred numerous customers. My advice: get multiple estimates, keep your documentation, verify that the equipment installed matches what you paid for, and read both the positive and negative reviews carefully.
