Over the years, I have found the owner, Brooke, to respond to most requests with some variation of "no." Do you carry a particular item? No. Can you order something specific? No. Can I exchange something? No. Can I return an item I purchased just a few hours earlier? No. The most recent example was a simple request for a 10-gallon plastic pot. Last week, I was told they were out of stock and to come back after Friday. When I returned this weekend, they still didn't have one. While walking through the nursery, I noticed a used 10-gallon pot and asked whether I could buy it. The answer was no, and I was told to come back next week. The problem wasn't that they were out of stock. Businesses run out of products all the time. The problem was the complete lack of initiative to help solve the customer's problem. A simple offer to order one when I first visited, or even an attempt to suggest an alternative, would have turned a frustrating experience into a positive one. Instead, I went to Armstrong and bought what I needed there. What makes this particularly disappointing is that Dana Point Nursery depends on the support of the local community. Most people want to support independent businesses, but customer loyalty is earned through helpfulness and service. Unfortunately, after several experiences like this, I have decided to take my business elsewhere.

Be very cautious if you're buying compost for growing vegetables. I used this compost to grow…read moretomatoes, peas, and peppers, and all of them showed signs of herbicide damage before eventually dying. The compost contains herbicide residue--likely persistent types that are harmful to sensitive crops. When I brought this up to the owner, he blamed my growing techniques and even suggested testing my native soil. I declined, and instead asked him to test the compost I bought--which he refused. It quickly turned into a blame game, and I chose to end the discussion. I'm posting this review so others can make informed decisions before using this compost. In the end, it's up to each buyer to judge for themselves.

Can FEEL & SMELL the nicer balance of nutrients & the quality vs price is so far beyond worth it. Also needed to pick up a SIMPLE starter green house. Chris did not even try to sell me anything silly or try to get me to consider a fancy set up. Being a woman I've walked into plenty of Hydro Stores & just been dismissed as a novice right away, etc... Not here! However a novice could easily walk into this store & be helped correctly, not ripped off, & be set up with the correct supplies. Was very happy walking out BC I ended up spending a good $200 less than my usual start up supply from the bigger stores. I saw they have everything for both indoor & outdoor, huge wall of liquid nutrients (more than 3 brands to choose from), different ways for water purification... was mighty impressed & so happy i no longer have to drive 30-45 mins to get just a few items. The knowledge, detailed service, & vast amount of products at that store is why you need to go to Beach Cities Hydro. I know my plants are going to be super happy & will start off strong this season. This nursery has a peaceful and well-organized layout. They had a wonderful selection of popular items including indoor plants, succulents, orchids, fruit trees, flowering plants, and bonsai. Since I am into succulents it was nice to see the variety they had in stock. Only downside is the pricing of these succulents. I also looked at orchid and pondered whether to replace my indoor collection but the pricing was a bit too high for me to justify replacing all my indoor orchid plants. So instead, I picked one new succulent and one beautiful purple orchis and checked out. I also browsed their collection of ceramic planters and seasonal garden decorations to get some inspiration for my own backyard. Overall, service was good. The staff was very knowledgeable about plant care and watering tips and they gave me advice on keeping my succulents and orchids alive. HAHA we will see how they behave in the next few months. In conclusion, good shopping experience here. Will be back here if my new plants need more tender loving care advice!
