If considering using Standard Nursery I would highly question their pricing. I used their Designer for new landscaping and was charged $1500.00 for 6 (12"x12") rocks. I wanted some more and went to Sepulveda Building Material and bought same type rocks costing 8 for $91.00 . Do the math. 5 plants died but they wouldn't replant because it was a few days passed warranty. The Standard on Ortega Rd is going out of business (possibly due to pricing). Question other Standards pricing for it might be their practice at all nurseries. read more

Julie Bemis was so helpful, knowledgeable and professional. She helped us purchase three 15gal, three 5 gal ficus trees; 2 star jasmines and a gorgeous strawberry tree. Their promotion for the 50% off on the plants was a great value. The guys delivered to our backyard and placed the plants where we needed them for planting. A really easy experience, great plants, and fast - same day! delivery. We realized when we saved her contact in our phone she was the one who had helped us 4 years earlier when she was at MV with selecting our olive trees. I was in the market for landscaping and had passed by this nursey located off the 5 on Ortega Highway. Curiosity got the best of me and I decided to reach out for an estimate. I connected with Rachael since she specialized in drought tolerant plants and landscaping designs. I was very early in my research phase, so I truly had a blank slate to work with. I just knew I wanted something low maintenance with a very neutral palette of green shrubs, succulents and beige or gray pebbles, but it had to fit in my limited budget. We first started with measurements of the space I was looking to design followed by a nursery visit to determine which plants would be installed on site. Based on the plant selection, pricing estimates would be evaluated for the quote. Rachael was patient with me and showed me so many options to help visualize my garden space. The nursery was pretty organized and displayed a huge variation of shrubs, vines, trees, fruits, succulents and plant containers. It came in a bunch of sizes too so you can have saplings to mature plants. I ended up selecting a few shrubs, grass and succulents. Unfortunately, the estimate was outside of my range for my immediate needs for plants and irrigation. The irrigation alone was beyond my budget, so I was quite bummed. However, I can totally see myself returning here when I am in need of a few plants to spruce up a space. read more

That review is for the store front and those two ladies that helped us. My second review is for RICK WRIGHT. I'm disgusted by the customer service that "'man" offered. (Actually didn't offer or help). You would think as an employee, he would be helping the women working there load the heavy plants/ material. HE DOESN'T. As a customer, I asked him if he could help us load a heavy plant onto the bed of my boyfriend's truck. His response was, I'm on the phone and my lower back hurts. Then proceeds to walk away from us. As a woman, I'm not sure how he's able to look in the mirror and consider himself a REAL MAN, or masculine. But I definitely don't. Whoever is the manager should definitely reconsider his employment. His attitude/ work ethics is unethical & unacceptable. I feel very sorry those ladies or anyone who has to work with a human like that. He needs to step up his game and actually do his job rather than walking around on the phone like he owns the place. read more

I went into this nursery not knowing they did full landscape services as well. I was just grabbing some plants and trees for my yard before we sold our house as we were moving out of state. I was greeted by one of their designers and we ended up doing more work in the yard to beautify it. It made a huge difference and helped my house to sell quicker! I bought thousands of dollars worth of trees from them. The minute I call saying one of my smaller trees is looking like it's dying, they started looking for my name so they can see my records. They couldn't find me or my husband. They spelled our name wrong. I can get over that. They ended up getting the manager on the phone, and he found us by our address. I said I'm calling about a tree that is dying, and he offered to honor the sale price that we bought it at. $40. Nevermind we were told that if within 90 days it's not surviving, they can replace it. They said, if it was put in writing, they will. They didn't even provide the receipt when we bought trees last time. We bought a pretty large tree and 9 smaller ones. Spent close to or over $1000. Don't have the receipt... They said, buy another. WTF! I don't want to! I would like to know if there is anything I can do to help it or know if it's really dying. When I told him he lost our business, he tried to help. You know, too little. 3rd time they disappoint. The guy who sold us the trees last time LIED! 90 day is not a guarantee unless you pay $250 delivery + install. It's not worth it for an on sale $40 tree. He had promised to relocate a lemon tree to a small planter for an extra $100. They didn't warn us that they didn't have a small planter, or we would of been prepared with a nice planter, not the wood planter for transporting the tree. I have been so disappointed in their customer service. I was told they could charge a few hundred dollars to fix the relocated tree issue. I would rather pay a gardener to come fix their negligence. Yes, their negligence since we were caught off guard with that issue as well. Oh I forgot, they waited weeks to call us to install the trees. Yup, we called them and they kept saying they would call us. Did not happen. They were supposed to call in Monday after we bought the trees over the weekend. They lost one of their best employees and lost us as customers. read more

We were quoted nearly $30K for front landscaping, and while Rick was eager to get us signed, communication quickly dropped off after the contract was finalized. There were a lot of lingering hardscape and lighting design questions that got resolved at the last minute. Unfortunately, 15 of the 50 boxwoods were the wrong species and needed replanting. It took over two months and a lot of patience to get the issue resolved, and while Rick seemed more focused on the sale, the installers, led by Edgar were excellent. Overall, not sure we'd use this company again. read more

I hesitate to even give one star to The Standard Nursery in San Juan Capistrano. After responding to "free landscape design" ad, I hired them to design and plant our front yard. The result was overwhelmingly disappointing! Plants were old, woody, ugly. No mulch included. Prices were at least twice as much as better plants in other nurseries in San Juan.... And even though the nursery advertised a 50-80% sale immediately after I signed a contract, they grossly overcharged not giving us any of the sale prices. Do NOT patronize this awful place! There are at least 3 better, more honest nurseries in San Juan! read more

We didn't want to wait 5 years for things to fill in. We wanted it to look amazing the day they were done. I had 3 companies come out and give me a variety of options and quotes. While Standard Design wasn't the cheapest it was the most well thought out and complete. The team on the ground lead by Edgar wer amazing.
