I am a long time resident of Dana Point and love to support local, family run businesses. Unfortunately, my experience with Dana Point Nursery has been consistently disappointing, and almost entirely due to customer service. Over the years, I have found the owner, Brooke, to respond to most requests with some variation of "no." Do you carry a particular item? No. Can you order something specific? No. Can I exchange something? No. Can I return an item I purchased just a few hours earlier? No. The most recent example was a simple request for a 10-gallon plastic pot. Last week, I was told they were out of stock and to come back after Friday. When I returned this weekend, they still didn't have one. While walking through the nursery, I noticed a used 10-gallon pot and asked whether I could buy it. The answer was no, and I was told to come back next week. The problem wasn't that they were out of stock. Businesses run out of products all the time. The problem was the complete lack of initiative to help solve the customer's problem. A simple offer to order one when I first visited, or even an attempt to suggest an alternative, would have turned a frustrating experience into a positive one. Instead, I went to Armstrong and bought what I needed there. What makes this particularly disappointing is that Dana Point Nursery depends on the support of the local community. Most people want to support independent businesses, but customer loyalty is earned through helpfulness and service. Unfortunately, after several experiences like this, I have decided to take my business elsewhere. read more

Always a fun and successful visit to the DP Nursery! Because they have such a beautiful and healthy selection of flowers and plants that fit the bill - literally - because the value I get for these (typically I'm getting a hanging plant and some tomato plants, herbs, maybe strawberry plants), and their longevity is fabulous. This nursery is special. The owner has created a magical spot garden enthusiasts. I knew her grandmother well when she was the owner before passing a few years ago. The granddaughter who worked under the tutelage of her grandmother and is current owner has really taken the place to a new level. I love the background music playing all over the property while you shop in this captivating environment. The quality of the plants is outstanding and prices are fitting the quality. The knowledgeable staff is always manicuring and deadheading the plants so they always look at their best. I'm a pretty big nursery guy and always enjoyed Rogers Gardens however, The Dana Point Nursery is a great local nursery. I No longer have reason to drive to Newport. read more

Very disappointed. I've been buying plants here for about 12 years. A couple of weeks ago, I found a beautiful hanging plant, and followed care instructions very carefully. The plant progressively started looking bad. I took the plant back to the nursery, and the clerk told me there is no warranty, no exchange, nothing. When you spend $50 on a hanging basket, I would expect a little better service. The clerk said there was nothing she could do because "her owner was out of town". Okay, so they are not empowered for customer satisfaction actions? All I wanted was an exchange. read more

Rex rocks! The last time I had a plant (and unintentionally killed it) was 1983, so I was wary about whether or not I could take care of plants, despite how much I enjoy them. Rex offered me the most excellent advice in caring for the two plants I bought, and reassured me that I could keep them alive with simple yet effective practices. It is evident that Rex knows and loves plants, and Rex is a wealth of wisdom for the customers. While anyone can be professional, Rex is that rare combination of being both professional AND personable. Dana Point, Ca. Really a nicely run business. The selection is pretty awesome. I like that they have some unusual cacti and succulent species. I would like it even better if all the plants were keyed as to genus and species. The place is actually bigger than I first perceived from the vantage of Pacific Coast Hwy. it is quite beautiful walking among the lush plants. They have the type of garden soil I like to use but did not have pumice. Maybe they were out? The parking is limited on the nursery grounds but there was ample parking north of the business on the street immediately behind. The plants I got today were healthy looking and thriving, but most importantly they are doing well in my garden. The people working there are great, very helpful and attentive. read more

So much selection in such a compact shop. I love how this shop is set up and how you can wonder the from section to section to find something completely new. Pricing is great especially for the quality of flowers and plants that are available. I don't live in the area so I only walked away with some strawberry plants and bib lettuce. The register area has some really pretty cards, wrapping paper and thoughtful gift selection which is a nice touch. Would definitely recommend coming here for your garden needs. read more

I truly hate to give a bad review for anyone. It's really important to get good reviews and not bad reviews as a business owner especially in beautiful Dana point. I've waited quite a few days before sending this review. I always do when I've been really upset about the service but this one takes the cake. Mind you, I have only given one bad review in my life. The owner, I don't know her name, but she just had a baby maybe it's been almost a year now I'm not sure. She has reddish/blonde hair. She was so rude to me and my daughter, when I asked to return or exchange less than $15 plant because it was sold to us with mold, and it disintegrated in less than a week. She looked at me with this condescending smile saying we cannot take this back. You cannot return it. Just smiling, straight in my face and dismissing me without any explanation as to why she wouldn't do it. This is not what I was told before. I was told if anything is wrong just take it back and we'll take it back. I continued by saying that I've been going to the nursery for over 11 years and she knows who I am and she knows who my daughter is and that I've spent thousands of dollars there. She just smiled and said no we will not take this back with no reason. I was completely flabbergasted and literally in shock. I could not believe what I was hearing. She sent me home with a moldy disintegrating plant and she won't take it back? Who does that? I've spoken with other people about her since then and they're like oh yeah, we know who she is and these are people in town who are aware of her smug personality. So I recommend everyone go to this awesome new location of Armstrong Gardens in San Juan Capistrano on Del Obispo.Nobody should have a business owner who treats customers the way she did. I hope some of you chime in if you've had a bad experience with her she is absolutely awful. I will never go back, and I urge Dana point residents to do the same. She absolutely ruined 11 years of very special moments and memories that me and my daughter have had ever since she was a little girl. We're creating new memories at this other Armstrong gardens. It's absolutely beautiful and Huge! I've already talked to several people there who are very nice and professional. They treated me with the utmost respect and that's what everybody deserves going to any establishment. Please please pass this message on: do not go to Dana point nursery. I will say that all of the other people that I have come in contact with that work at her nursery are really great, it's just the owner and she's there all the time now, so I wouldn't give her a dime! I am still just so upset and livid about this. I probably should've given it another week, but I just want everyone to know, especially with the holiday season, that you're giving money to a very rude and disrespectful person. Huge selection of vegetables and herbs, shade plants, house plants, pottery and of course flowers! Brooke has ordered me flowers for several events that I did center pieces for and they were perfect. Everything is in excellent condition. If I am looking for a special plant they have even called me to let me know it had been delivered- thank you Katie! This is such a wonderful little nursery and has been around since Dana Point was still filled with big green empty lots - at least 50 years. It has a unique selection - large amount of shade plants. Good knowledge about knowing what does well in our So Cal clay soil and for houses along the coast. Good selection of soils and chips/mulch. Fun place to take kids, has a Koi Pond. One block away is the Bagel Shack, good coffee and a local spot for lunch/breakfast. Fruit trees, very large selection of indoor plants, orchids ferns etc. Good place to get an indoor plant or orchid as a gift. Support this local business and keep it in Dana Point! read more

Great selection of plants with beautiful flowers in excellent condition. The nursery is beautiful inside and outside after the remodeling a while ago. The staff are nice and friendly. I rated this nursery 4 stars because there are only a few parking spots available in front and they are usually taken. Also, the succulent selection is not as large as what I'm used to at other nurseries, but I still go here to add to my succulent collection because I will always find something I like. read more

Beautiful plants and place to walk through. Purchased a greater periwinkle hanging plant and some other small ones. How they have the nursery set up inspired some ideas. My only complaint is the staff member who helped us didn't really know a lot about the plants and told us to google for information. But other than that, will come back for more plant babies. read more
