Popped in for a quick standing tapas lunch at around noon. It happened to be Spanish mother's day and they hooked me up with a red carnation, swoon. A nice sized bar and plenty of tables in the front and back area. Tapas all are 2.5 euro. We sampled a bunch and they were all great. Pretty simple, but fresh and delicious. A high five to the thinly pounded, breaded and fried mushroom that was delectable. Their spanish tortilla was mainly egg based vs potato and was a little runny, I was into it. It was busy at 10pm! I just stood at the bar and got served. I asked for an English menu which was pretty helpful. Nevertheless I asked what they recommended. I had a couple to small bites recommended by the waiter at the bar from the Pintxos menu. The sirloin steak was a tad chewy but it goes really well with the capsicum and caramelized onion. Being popular has it's pitfalls. For Txirimiri (no I can't pronounce it) the food is wonderful but the crowds make it a hard place to : a. get a seat b. relax. it's a rather loud environment. Basically the front area is the bar, you can try to eat there but it's so packed i could imagine some spilling beer on my food. There is a seating area in the back. Nothing fancy, it reminded of a thrown together cafeteria or downstairs of upper westside Shake Shack. While the waitress was obviously swamped she was quick and friendly. While environment didn't knock me out I was very pleased with the food. The black squid ink risotto , was wonderful. Creamy, not overly salted and considering the surrounding environment, well plated. The Hamburger Unai was unique and tasty. It's served open face and eaten with fork and knife. The sauce topping it was a mix of cheese and something I couldn't identify (my poor Spanish abilities limited my questions, a lot of pointing took place) but I did enjoy it. Had to check this place out after finding out it was near my AirBnB in La Latina + read their fried mushroom tapa was delicious and the fact all their pintxos are 2.50€. I came on a weekday night and there were a good amount of people in here. We sat in the dining area and realized that the tapas we came for were at the bar area only. Was bummed to find out from our bartender that the menu changed and the fried mushroom tapa was not available. I ended up selecting some random but delicious pintxo of a baby fried egg (probably quail), shrimp and some tiny fish - not sure what kind but I've seen them served often here in Madrid. This was all piled on top of a baguette slice which was wonderfully crunchy and warm (without being soggy / wet!) A delicious surprise since it was sitting in their tapas fridge (they warmed it up before serving it to me). Did I mention their wine is less than 3€?! Do not leave Madrid without a visit to Txirimiri. Hands down the finest tapas I've ever eaten. Truffle croquettes and duck spring rolls with foie gras. Amazing! Also best pinxos I'd had in Spain. So I was told to come here for the tortilla, I did get the tortilla but I read on yelp it would be a mistake not to order the secreto iberico....SERIOUSLY one of the best things I've eaten in Spain and I'm not even a huge pork fan. It is perfectly cooked, and the marriage between the honey and mustard sauce is as close to perfection as it gets , with an explosion of flavor on your taste buds. My wife and two kids (ages 13 and 7) went here for dinner. It has been a challenge to find something that we can all enjoy. I read the reviews and wanted to try. But I was skeptical they would have anything my kids would enjoy. Everyone enjoyed it; it was the best all around family meal in Madrid. Service is very friendly and helpful. The wines were good, especially a white wine I had (copaboca). After reading the reviews, we had to have the secreto iberico. It is excellent. Read all the other reviews highlighting this one and order it (5/5). We also had a tomato and mozzarella salad. It was a solid good: tomatoes could be fresher but the mozzarella was excellent (3/5) The kids had what are essentially chicken nuggets, but some of the best I've ever had (although I am not a fan of them) (3/5). Boisterous, crowded, hip, happy small bar with restaurant at the back just a stone's throw away from the metro on a street behind the covered market in La Latina is this amazing place -- food-wise. I had the grilled foei gras with fig marmalade and Saldon salt! And, since everyone here had been raving about it, the Secreto Iberico -- Iberic pork sirloin on top of caramelized potatoes with wild mushrooms drizzled with mustard candy! Wow! The least thing that this place has going for it is that it is open before 8PM. Then there is the food. We were looking for a place to eat at the senior dinner time (5 to 6 pm), not an easy feat in Madrid unless you go to a tourist trap. Right next to Mercado Cebada it is on the edge of La Latina neighborhood. We walked in and there was a boisterous crowd at the bar, further back there was a small room where given the early hour we easily found a seat. Four dishes really shined The Solomillo de buey which was tender and extremely flavorful,Fajita de carpaccio de buey, mahonesa de trufa, rúcula y parmesano tender slices or rare beef that melt like butter in your mouth, the Secreto Ibérico a la plancha con caramelo de mostaza (Secreto Iberico is spains secret pork weapon, if you see it order it), Huevos rotos which is simply fried eggs over fried potatoes with jamon iberico, sounds simple but it fantastic. and finally Bacalao en tempura which was light as a feather and perfectly crisp. After three months of my incessant nagging, last night my better half "suggested" that we return to Txirimiri. I wasn't in the best of moods but suddenly in anticipation of a heart stoppingly delicious meal, I perked right up. I first tried a delicacy at this Basque bar on a Sunday afternoon caña romp through the La Latina neighborhood. It was late summer and people were literally pouring out of the place. We edged our way in because we were on a mission: tortilla con cebolla caramelizada y salsa de boletus (spanish omelette with caramelized onion and a creamy mushroom sauce). Once ordered, we squeezed into an semi-empty slot alongside the wall opposite the long bar and chowed down. What more can I say other than I fully understood what all of the fuss was about- it was perfectly delicious. If it hadn't been for the excessive crowds that day, we might've stayed and feasted on more from the menu. Absolutely everything looked and sounded amazing. And, at last! On this rainy Tuesday night (around 9) we had no problem landing a couple of stools at the bar. Though, within minutes and certainly by 10, the bar filled up quickly. This visit I was able to see that they do have table seating in the small salon at the back of the restaurant. I'm not sure, but it's probable that larger groups can be accommodated there. The most trying thing about the night was deciding what to order. The pintxos (mile-high Basque canapes) lined up on the bar looked spectacular. Gorgeous, mouth-watering works of art (2,30-2,70 euros each). And the chalkboard menu features raciones (portions) and specialty pintxos like: solomillo con foie y setas , bacaloa tempurizada, saquitos con pera y queso, risotto negro con sepia y langostino, a selection of 5 different salads, and much more. After much deliberation we chose the risotto negro (with black squid ink) and a variety of pinxtos. The risotto was the best I'd ever had. We devoured it, and upon finishing, my husband was just a hair short of ordering another portion. It is very, very good. The pintxos were outstanding as well. The food is fantastic, but it's rich, meaning a little will go along way which is nice considering the price. Dishes range from 7- 21 euros, but the quality will make it more than worth it. This one's a keeper for us. And, last but not least, they have an excellent selection of Ribera del duero and Rioja wines. read more

The croquettas were pretty good and the chicken was crispy, delicious and came with a nice sauce. The risotto was okay- it was really heavy and rather watery.
