In a city with amazing culinary delights everywhere, we ventured into Txirimiri twice in 15 hours. In the evening the vibe was young, loud and fun. Our waiter was fantastic and the food was incredible. The next morning we had the papas con jamon y huevos rotos. Out of this world. I can't wait to visit again when we return.

Pintxos - Sirloin steak. A tad chewy but the peppers & caramelized onion goes really well together

It was busy at 10pm! I just stood at the bar and got served. I asked for an English menu which was pretty helpful. Nevertheless I asked what they recommended. I had a couple to small bites recommended by the waiter at the bar from the Pintxos menu. The sirloin steak was a tad chewy but it goes really well with the capsicum and caramelized onion. The glaze cheek was amazing!! So tender and literally melts in your mouth. Sadly I was too full to cram anything else in! They accept credit cards but no AMEX.

Had to check this place out after finding out it was near my AirBnB in La Latina + read their fried mushroom tapa was delicious and the fact all their pintxos are 2.50€. I came on a weekday night and there were a good amount of people in here. We sat in the dining area and realized that the tapas we came for were at the bar area only. Was bummed to find out from our bartender that the menu changed and the fried mushroom tapa was not available. I ended up selecting some random but delicious pintxo of a baby fried egg (probably quail), shrimp and some tiny fish - not sure what kind but I've seen them served often here in Madrid. This was all piled on top of a baguette slice which was wonderfully crunchy and warm (without being soggy / wet!) A delicious surprise since it was sitting in their tapas fridge (they warmed it up before serving it to me). Did I mention their wine is less than 3€?! I love the bar bites and decent wine you can get in Madrid - what a refreshing change from NYC!! This a nice spot to drop in for a small bite and to catch up with friends!

Being popular has it's pitfalls. For Txirimiri (no I can't pronounce it) the food is wonderful but the crowds make it a hard place to : a. get a seat b. relax. it's a rather loud environment. Basically the front area is the bar, you can try to eat there but it's so packed i could imagine some spilling beer on my food. There is a seating area in the back. Nothing fancy, it reminded of a thrown together cafeteria or downstairs of upper westside Shake Shack. While the waitress was obviously swamped she was quick and friendly. While environment didn't knock me out I was very pleased with the food. The black squid ink risotto , was wonderful. Creamy, not overly salted and considering the surrounding environment, well plated. The Hamburger Unai was unique and tasty. It's served open face and eaten with fork and knife. The sauce topping it was a mix of cheese and something I couldn't identify (my poor Spanish abilities limited my questions, a lot of pointing took place) but I did enjoy it. So while I didn't love hanging there, I loved eating there. ** it seems more popular with locals than tourist, if you are fluent in Spanish you may enjoy bar scene. A young attractive crowd gathers here. **

    Secreto ibérico..must have

Okay. So I was told to come here for the tortilla, I did get the tortilla but I read on yelp it would be a mistake not to order the secreto iberico....SERIOUSLY one of the best things I've eaten in Spain and I'm not even a huge pork fan. It is perfectly cooked, and the marriage between the honey and mustard sauce is as close to perfection as it gets , with an explosion of flavor on your taste buds. You would really do yourself a disservice if you did not order this dish. I ordered it for myself and ended up eating the whole thing. Pricey? Yes, but worth every cent.

Secreto Iberico -- thinly cut grilled pork sirloin over caramelized potatoes with wild mushrooms drizzled with mustard candy.

Boisterous, crowded, hip, happy small bar with restaurant at the back just a stone's throw away from the metro on a street behind the covered market in La Latina is this amazing place -- food-wise. I had the grilled foei gras with fig marmalade and Saldon salt! And, since everyone here had been raving about it, the Secreto Iberico -- Iberic pork sirloin on top of caramelized potatoes with wild mushrooms drizzled with mustard candy! Wow! This was hands-down, the best meal I had in Madrid over Christmas vacation 2014!

Perfect meal to kick off our vacation in Spain. We were a party of 6, making reservation was easy…read moreand we were seated as soon as we walked in. They have a lot of options on their menu and we decided to go with their tuna salad, seafood salad, croquettes, fried baby calamari, seafood paella and lobster rice. The veggies in both salads were fresh and crisp. They provide you with vinegar and olive oil so you can mix it yourself to your liking and it's perfect for hot summer days. The shrimps were firm and springy, and calamari tender. The croquettes came with 3 flavors. Iberian ham, mushrooms and mussels. They were fried perfectly with it being crispy on the outside, warm smooth on the inside with each flavor coming through as you eat it leaving a savory and pleasant after taste. The fried baby squid was also perfectly fried and seasoned. There wasn't a drop of oil on the paper. The highlight of the meal was definitely the paella and lobster rice. We decided to order 2 different style of rice dish instead of 2 paella just to try out different dishes that they offer. All the rice dishes are priced per person and there is a minimum of 2 order per dish. Since we have 2 young kids and 2 elderly who don't eat that much. We ended up ordering 2 portions of paella and 2 portions of the lobster rice. The paella was heavenly. The rice was flavorful and perfectly seasoned, al dente but has a nice crispy bottom from being cooked in the pan. The seafood was fresh, including various dish and shellfishes. The only thing was they included 2 different types of shrimps and one of them, not that it's not fresh, but has a more mushy texture which I'm not a fan of. The lobster rice was scrumptious. It was cooked in broth and is soupy. The broth was extremely rich and favorable yet it's not creamy so you won't feel too heavy. There were plenty of seafood and topped with one whole lobster which has big chunks of meat. This was my favorite dish for the evening. We weren't able to finish everything and ended up bringing some of this rice back and it reheated well the next day. The restaurant was comfortable and spacious Europe standard. It was a super hot summer in Madrid as we got hit with the heat wave. Most of the restaurants in Europe have little to no AC but I was happy to walk into the restaurant with sufficient AC. Our servers were also very friendly and attentive and we were offered a complimentary after dinner drink as well. I highly recommended Marina Ventura!

Most of the seats are outside, where 5 tables provide seats for 2 - 4 each, although more can probably be improvised. Inside, as if to ensure the diner doesn't forget it, neat rows of mussel shells are strung and hung along all the walls. A counter inside provides a place to enjoy the food and beverages standing, at a lower cost. But al fresco is where it's at in Spain so take a seat and wait for the waiter to check in. They offered an English menu in addition to Spanish. The mussels section is extensive, prepared in different ways but mostly served room temperature, alongside other classic tapas. The mussels are cooked well; tender, plump, and juicy. The spiced ones, in particular, were delicious, seasoned well, packing enough heat for flavor without overwhelming. The mussels in hot tomato sauce came warm in earthenware and smothered in sauce but was bland, an odd thing in Spain where excess salt is far more common. Their patatas bravas are worth a mention, being exactly what these potatoes are supposed to be: mouthfuls of fresh-from-the-frier heat, crispy and pillowy in texture, and doused in just enough hot pepper sauce. Along with a glass of cana, this makes for a nice tapas stop in Sol.
