It's as if dinner has been planned for us to have it here at TGFI on a Saturday night for my partner's birthday (4/25) when we received their new menu flyers that morning in the mail! This has always been our go-to for really good Italian food and there can't be a more perfect time to invite friends to come celebrate with us. It's just a small party of seven that's been welcomed and served well by their very attentive servers that started out with their freshly-baked house bread offerings. I know that their servings come in always large and filling that we skipped appetizers, although I've been eyeing their crispy and tender Calamaretti, one of my favorites from their starters. Their stuffed mushrooms are equally delightful! Everyone ordered different individual dishes, my partner went for their amazing Chicken Picatta and enjoyed it really well. I ordered my all time fave Capellini D'Angelo Al Frutti Di Mare. All the seafood (scallops, squid, mussels, clams and shrimps) together with the pasta are all perfectly cooked! Never have I regretted ordering this every time. To top off that night's celebration while we're having our Turamisu birthday cake from Karina's for dessert, the owner generously offered a bottle of pink champagne to us... for free! Wow! Vegan Review: I called ahead of time regarding if I could modify the menu. They said I could but the vegan cheese js extra so I can't substitute. I docked off a star for that since it's like a punishment for being lactose intolerant. I ordered the vegetarian pizza with no cheese. I told the server I am allergic to dairy and eggs. I appreciated that I was able to remove the dairy cheese/olives and she did not charge me for switching them out for spinach. I was surprised to see that they stocked up on the veggies when my pizza came. They brought garlic rolls to the table. Unfortunately I wasn't able to eat it due to the butter. My family thought the some of the food was good and some were alright . They said calzone wasn't good. Food took a long time, server took a while in coming to our table to take our order, even drinks took a while, and there weren't very many people. My wife and I got calzones, mine was pepperoni, meatball, black olive, and bacon. It was easily the best calzone I've ever had (the Ricotta was a nice touch). The staff who helped were friendly. A Birthday Dinner Full of Memories, Flavor, and Garlic Knots Two Guys from Italy - 405 N Verdugo Rd, Glendale, CA Yesterday was my birthday, and like any proper foodie (and chef), I had strong opinions about where we should celebrate. My friends--God love them--know how picky I am when it comes to restaurants, so it's usually a bit of an ordeal deciding where to go. Luckily, they love me enough to put up with it! Originally, we planned to try a new French spot in Sierra Madre, but when my friend called to make a reservation, we found out they're closed on Tuesday nights. With plans quickly changing, I finally admitted something I'd been holding back: I'd been dying to return to Two Guys from Italy--an Italian restaurant that used to be my favorite place to go with my ex. That emotional tie is probably why it took me so long to go back. When we pulled up, my friend commented that it didn't look like much from the outside. But once we were seated inside, they understood the charm--warm Italian music, cozy atmosphere, and that familiar, comforting feeling you only get at a place that is authentically Italian. We started with water and a basket of garlic knots ($3.99). They typically come with a side of marinara, but I remembered they also serve them with an a la checca sauce ($3.25)--a mixture of fresh tomatoes, garlic, basil, olive oil, and Parmesan. I broke open a knot, spooned the mixture on top, and voilà--bruschetta knots! (Is that a thing? It should be.) I brought my own bottle of Sonoma-Cutrer Chardonnay--because like food, I'm picky about my wine, and happily paid the corkage fee. My friend Chris ordered a glass of the house Cabernet, which she found impressively smooth and not overly acidic, as house wines can sometimes be. As for dinner, I didn't need to look at the menu--I was there for my favorite: Frutti di Mare ($24.99). It's loaded with fresh seafood--clams, mussels, scallops, shrimp, and calamari in a creamy tomato sauce over pasta. Every bite was as heavenly as I remembered. Susy ordered the Carrot Soup, a velvety purée of carrots, potatoes, and onions, followed by the Veal Marsala served with spaghetti in red sauce and a side of steamed broccoli, carrots, and zucchini. Jerry, the owner, mentioned that due to recent laws, he now has to travel over an hour just to source veal, so if you're craving veal, this is the place to get it. Chris had the Ravioli al Pomodoro ($16.99), choosing the cheese-filled ravioli in a pink sauce. From the first bite, she was raving. The portions? Generous. We all had enough to take home. But we all wanted to be sure we left room for dessert. * Lemon Mascarpone Cake ($6.99) - Light, citrusy, and refreshing * Cannoli ($6.99) - Classic, crisp shell and creamy filling * Chocolate Mousse Cake ($6.99) - Rich, smooth, decadent (my favorite of the three) Susy also ordered a cappuccino to go with her Lemon Mascarpone Cake. Honestly, I wish I had another slice of that chocolate mousse cake right now to go with my leftovers that I couldn't stop thinking about all day. We couldn't have all been happier about our meals, and I can't believe it took me so long to share this restaurant with my best friends. There were so many other dishes we wanted to try, including the pizza, but we'll save those for next time. And trust me, there will be a next time. I have been cooking Italian for over 30 years from scratch by hand, long obsession almost impossible to find done right in restaurants except this restaurant. She was lovely and provided great service with a smile. They don't have a full bar but they did have a sparkling rosé, which made me happy. I didn't catch everyone's selections but some of the dishes that we ordered were: Chicken Parmigiana (which came with a side of spaghetti), Chicken Marsala, Penne All Arrabiata, Wild Mushroom Ravioli, & Pepperoni Pizza. Since it was his celebration, my nephew asked if he could have the Cioppino ($46.99), which was the most expensive item on the menu. (We are definitely related. LOL). Interior decor gives an old Europe feel, just shy of gaudy. The smaller room in the front can be a bit noisy since it's like an echo chamber with hard walls and floors. Meal starts with garlic knots and some diced tomatoes with basil and olive oil. We thought of getting the bruschetta but the G.K. was close enough. Entree dishes can be enhanced with a cup of soup or small salad. The minestrone soup is good and full of vegetables. Pasta dishes are generous and you can plan to take some home. Ordered a glass of Chianti that never showed up, I didn't follow up and wasn't charged for it. Just saying you might have to speak up if something is amiss. They were still at their old location last time I had a sat down for a meal there (Broadway & Chevy Chase). This current location was Giuseppe's back in the day. That's how old I go back with it. Ha! We went with a 12" vegetarian pizza ($15.99), calameretti appetizer ($15.99), vegetarian lasagna ($15.99) and meat lasagna ($15.99). First the pizza, it was just ok. I thought that the water from the tomatoes would make the pizza less crispy so we asked for it on only half the pie but they put it all over. I remember their pizza being better than this so I was a little disappointed. Ok toppings, sauce was a little less than I would want, cheese was ok and crust was also just ok... The calamari was not crispy and was pale in color. It looked undercooked at first but tasting it, it was not. It was far from crispy... BUT we still put it in the air fryer for 10 mins to try & crispen it up. It did a little bit but the squid was bland. It needed seasoning and it had none. It was a sad appetizer to see when I opened the container. The vegetarian lasagna was good but needed more layers of pasta. It's lasagna after all. It was like a short stack lasagna. The ricotta with spinach, mushrooms was good. It said it also had broccoli and zucchini but didnt see that. It was a tasty lasagna otherwise. We shared it between 2 people along with the pizza so the portion was good... I heard the meat lasagna was good so at least that part went well. For me, I was just disappointed in the things we ordered to share. It didnt meet expectations so that was certainly the disappointing part. Very different than past experiences for sure. I love fettucini Alfredo and I've tried all restaurants serving them including nearby Pasadena but theirs is the best. We were driving by when we found this cute little gem and had to stop. The moment you walk in your greeted by sweet waitress. The ambience of the restaurant is so cute. It's like you stepped into Italy itself. we ordered a pepperoni pizza with a Caesar salad, which was delicious. Homemade twisted garlic bread which was so good. One of the worst take out experiences of my life. I never write reviews cause I don't care to waste my time, but this time I couldn't resist. They took an hour and 20 minutes to make fettuccine and that's after the owner asked me 3 times with his alcoholic breath what my order was and that they will make it if it hasn't been started yet, 4 other people canceled their orders and left while I was waiting.
