Two Bostons' is in a beautiful shopping complex anchored by Whole Foods and Nordstrom Rack.

Okay, it's official. Dogs eat better than I do. They also dress better, walk better, have better toys and look cuter, too. I'm not a pet owner, but I am friends with fur-mommies, and each time I'd drive or walk by this shop, I'd set a sideways glance at it before deciding to be responsible and get back to work. But as I had time to kill this afternoon, I figured I'd indulge my ever-burgeoning curiosity and stop in. And am I ever glad I did. Wow... just, wow. There are specialty collars and leashes, water dishes and doggie outfits, and toys so cute I wanted to take them home for myself. Canis lupus best be familiaris with this homo stealin' their chew toys. But what really smacked my gob was the bakery counter. I approached it with a ravenous glint in my eyes (so I was craving chocolate), and several employees stopped to ask if they could help me. And I unabashedly asked if I could eat any of them. What? I was hungry! They barely blinked in surprise before informing me that yes, I could, and yes, they could also help me select an easily-digested biscuit for the dog of a friend who had recently been struck by a car. One lovely lady jokingly suggested the martini glass. Mm...peanut-butter martinis. And it was wheat-free, too, for the furry gluten-averse. In the back are several fridges and freezers for food that looked like it'd been shipped mistakenly from the Whole Foods next door. Pre-packaged deli dinners and cuts of meat that are locally sourced? And here I am, top of the food chain, living off Wonder Bread and canned tomatoes. The selection for feline familiars is a little lacking, but let's face it: cats are just happy with the ring off a gallon of milk and a nice, warm face to sleep on. Two Bostons is a place that could convert the petless and be a godsend for friends of the four-legged. And I say hallelujah!

Okay, so it's expensive. But Two Bostons just makes you want to spoil your dog. The bakery items (they look delicious) are displayed beautifully and they have an abundance of quality choices for your four legged friend. Today I got Chaps some bully sticks (buy 6 get 1 free) and got recommendations (great customer service, super friendly) for two other treats: Charki Puffs and Simply Natural liver and bacon coated bites. Boy, Chaps going to be happy to see me! Of course. .. One of the great things about having a dog is that they are always happy to see you!

This location was in the same direction as my home so I decided to stop by. Pros: I do like how the store is clean and easy to navigate. As far as I could tell there was only one person working the floor, but he was friendly. Con: the only con I found here and unfortunately it's common amongst most pet stores is most items are catered to dogs. This isn't to say that their cat selection is small, it is a pretty decent size but the options still felt somewhat limited. But on the bright side I did see a sign that stated "more cat food coming soon" so that's promising. I'll have to come back to check on the new inventory updates!

Today was the last time I will shop here. I walked in the door and there was a medium sized OFF LEASH dog following someone around about ten feet from the owner or employee, not sure. I asked to leash the dog. They said "oh don't worry" then I said my dog is not safe around off leash dogs. Not true but I don't trust people who feel that off leash animals in a pet store are safe. This is beyond unprofessional. The store employee told me not to worry about it. Um... what? Maybe this is an Illinois thing? I don't know this dog, mine is on leash. That's not a safe way for dogs to meet. So basic. I should not have to ask- in a pet store to put a dog on leash. I proceeded to ask where the leashes were ironically, and really felt uncomfortable - I was interrupting a conversation between two employees or an employee and a customer (person in purple scrubs who looked like they worked there.. I'm really not sure, but after having to insist that I did not want to bring my dog in with an off leash dog, the whole experience was pretty terrible. Honestly, I'm so disappointed. I look forward to going to the store every time I visit the state and I will just find another one. At minimum I should feel like my dog is safe while I shop. Oh lastly I asked to use the restroom and was told it was out of order, and they did not have a public bathroom - meaning that they had a private one that we were not able to use. Which seems fine unless of course the public one is out of order. No suggestion of an alternative. I can't believe I drove 45 minutes to go to this store. The store itself looked pretty bad. Most of the shelves were half empty. They had some cute toys, but I'd say 50% of the hooks were empty. So much for supporting small businesses. At least at Petco I'll have a bathroom, dogs will be on leash, and someone who works there might actually help me find what I'm looking for.

I can't believe I hadn't reviewed Adopt previously. My dear sweet Calliecakes is from this shelter,…read moreso I am forever grateful that they rescued her. My parents saw her at the shelter back in 2012 and texted me her photo (because they knew I wanted a cat), and I was like "yes absolutely I want her I will come get her." And the rest is history -- it's been 11 great years with my bestie (and hopefully many more). And then a year later, almost to the day, my parents were like "hey let's go to Adopt" the day after Thanksgiving and they ended up getting a cat (their second) for themselves. I haven't been back to the shelter since 2013 when I went with them when they decided to get their cat, but at that time the shelter was super nice and they had several rooms where cats could roam free. It was a nice, no-stress situation to be able to sit on a sofa or on the floor and have the cats come check you out. So many snuggles. And I follow them on Instagram and they continue to do great work and care deeply for the animals they rescue. Definitely check them out if you are looking for a new best friend! And now enjoy the cat photo spam/cat tax :)
