After finishing my workout at the gym, I was looking for something quick to eat on my way to my next destination. While walking through Canarsie, I stumbled upon Twisted Roots, a relatively quiet juice and café bar. The place was almost closing, but I decided to give it a try since there weren't many people around. I learned that Twisted Roots is Haitian-owned, which I appreciated for its cultural diversity. The staff shared that they've been in business for eight years and were the first juice bar in Canarsie. If that's true, it's impressive considering how many healthier options have popped up in the area since. Being pioneers in this kind of business is no small feat. I ordered an açaí bowl, which took around 10 minutes to prepare, even though I was the only customer. It's hard to say why--maybe they were prepping or taking their time to get it right. When it finally arrived, I could see the effort they put into it. The bowl was loaded with toppings--bananas, strawberries, blueberries, pineapple, pears, shredded coconut, Nutella, and honey. It was a very generous serving and probably weighed close to a pound. The taste was fresh and fruity, like eating a refreshing fruit salad. That said, I do prefer my açaí bowls with a frozen base. This one was more on the watery side, which made it less satisfying in terms of texture. But for $11, it's hard to complain about the value--it was definitely packed with fresh fruits, unlike some places that charge more for a lot less. The setting of the café is functional but unusual. There aren't many places to sit, aside from a few stools and chairs. It feels more like a grab-and-go spot than somewhere you'd sit and relax. If you're planning to eat there, you might end up outside by the bus stop, especially during the warmer months. I think the establishment would benefit from a redesign to make the space more welcoming and improve the overall vibe. As for the customer service, it was friendly and attentive. Even before I mentioned that I was a Yelp reviewer, the staff encouraged me to leave a review and follow them on social media. It's clear they care about customer feedback, which is always a good sign--they're conscious of how they can improve and create a better experience for their patrons. I'd come back for another visit, especially since I live nearby. I'd love to see them refine their offerings and maybe enhance the space, but I enjoyed my experience and appreciate what they're trying to do. read more

I was in the area and I saw this place had pretty good reviews. First off, the guy whose in the front (I think he's Haitian) is not the person who should be greeting first time customers. I asked him questions about the menu and he's watching Tv, not really making eye contact, and taking the longest pregnant pauses in between each sentence as if he's not sure what he's trying to say. I had to redirect his attention a number of times while trying to place my order. I ordered the tuna rice bowl and got one of their juices. The tuna rice bowl was very heavy and definitely worth the price. The juice was good; however, I was surprised to see my attentive server pour pineapple juice from the can in there. So today I ordered online for the first time from Twisted Rootz. Everything was correct but the chicken was missing. I was just gonna write a bad review but the presentation was so nice and neat that I knew it had to be a mistake. The owner asked zero questions and was QUICK to fix it. She sent someone to my house with an OVERLY generous amount of chicken for my salad. The chicken was juicy, BOMB and worth the wait! They made a fan and a customer out of me! Twisted roots I've decided to give you guys a 3 STAR and here is why. So when most people go to get juices, it's because they are usually making a healthy decision (for the moment) and they want to feel good about it! When someone walks into your business YOU SHOULD BE EXCITED! This is a juice bar! Not your average Jamaican restaurant. Be perky, be happy! When I walked in this morning it seemed like they barely wanted to say hi. Then there was a lady that worked there who was standing behind the bar just staring at me the entire time (as i tried to take pictures for this yelp review lol). Also ... the juice I ordered wasn't that great. I LOVE ginger but the ginger was so strong it tasted like pepper in my throat (I ordered the "not so common"). In my opinion The staff who works there (family or not) needs to be A. Retrained (and held to a certain standard) or B. Replaced. This is coming from a food service chef/professional with 10 years of experience. Will I go back? Maybe ... maybe not. But if I do... I'm going to watch with a magnifying glass as they make my drink. I just got access to my Yelp page and while I was grossly annoyed by the service across the street at another establishment, I knew I should've gone with my gut and just got a good ol smoothie from this spot that I frequent Twisted Rootz. Firstly the team there feels like family, everytime I go in, matter how busy it gets, they are warm and kind and it only took 2 times for me to order my special drink for the gentlemen to know exactly what I wanted. Preparation station is clean and they get the job done. Ive had the salads before which are yummy too but I usually get a smoothie. There arent enough words to say but they are a gem of a place in Canarsie, the first of a few others who were inspired to open a healthy juice spot in the neighborhood as well. My boyfriend and I were looking for a healthy food spot to grab a quick lunch before we hit the rode to do our Christmas shopping and we came across this hidden gem in Brooklyn. I've never felt more at home inside of food spot. They greeted us immediately with warm smiles and delicious samples of their chicken and split pea soup, as we looked over their menu to decide what we wanted. They answered all of our questions and made great suggestions. I got this delicious salad that was literally jam packed. I've never been so full off a salad. You really get your moneys worth here. While we waited for our order to be ready, we got to sample their famous Kerlie's smoothie, the smoothie my boyfriend had created and the salad I ordered. I was so full off the samples, before I even got to eat my order. It made me feel like I was at my grandmother's house because she never let's you leave on a empty stomach. Ordered my regular Jerk Chicken Panini, while it's normally tasty literally every time I order the paper is stuck to the soggy bread. I think aluminum would be more appropriate? The coffee was dark like I like it, but the taste wasn't great. The acai bowl needs a lot of work. It wasn't ice creamy at all, very watery with chunks of ice throughout. I won't be ordering again. The Red Alert tastes good, but very sweet considering the ingredients. This spot is fairly new so I'll give it another go, as their salads looked tasty. I ordered a Rice bowl with jerk chicken, kale, mushrooms, roasted peppers, chickpeas, corn, roasted onions and a light balsamic vinaigrette. The food was absolutely delicious. The only thing I would change is that I would sauté the pineapples with the rest of the food so it wasn't so cold. It is so wonderful to have a healthy option in the Canarsie area. I must say that I was excited to see that a juice bar was opening up close to my home. And one with healthy food options was a plus. I decided to try it out this past Saturday afternoon. Upon entering, the atmosphere wasn't as warm and inviting as other juice bars that I have been to but I just took that as they were tired from a long day. The young male (about 15 yrs old) at the front proceeded to help me. I asked him did they have any energy drink options - he did not know what to recommend. Cool, he's young and I didn't want to make him feel inept. I decided to make my own smoothie. I then asked about the "panini of the day" that was listed on the monitor menu but did not include the ingredients. Sn: there is no panini of the day lol. The young male asked another female who I now understand to be the owner. She explained and I made my selections. I couldn't comprehend why the options on the panini weren't listed somewhere but whatever. I get home my panini is great - the smoothie was ok. Fast forward to two days later. I decide to go back. I called in my order. Someone picked up and then passed the phone to a child to take my order. I was on the phone for a few minutes before realizing that the little girl, who said absolutely nothing to me, was ready for my order. I asked for the panini with the same ingredients that I had a few days before. I asked her to repeat my order because there seemed to be some confusion about the different toppings. I was a little uncomfortable because she is a child and she obviously did not know the menu. I did not want to give her attitude because it wasn't her fault. I get there to pick up my food but it wasn't ready. I waited patiently and once I retrieved my food I even agreed to leave a review. Although I had plenty to say about the overall lack of customer service and tact - I figured I would give this new business a chance. I get home and my sandwich only has cheese and pesto. In addition it was over cooked and dry. I call and spoke to the manager and she asked me was I nearby to bring it back. It was 9pm and I wasn't going to leave my house again after a long day. She then told me that I could come back and she would hook me up. The next day I get there she isn't there but the staff (who spoke very little English) on duty calls her. She tells him that he can make it again but I will have to pay $3. At first I said ok but then I thought about it why am I paying for a mistake made by the staff??? It's really not about the money but more about the customer service. Truly disappointed in this restaurant. They need to work on their customer service, cleanliness of the dining area, consistency and knowledge on running a business.
