This is one of the tastiest spots I have found in Tucson and it's hidden where I would least expect it...inside of a convenient store! This spot is a true hidden gem. They dont have a super large menu but what they are serving up is tasty and traditional Indian dishes packed with so much flavor! We went with the lamb tikka masala and the butter chicken of course with naan on the side, plain and spicy garlic. The butter chicken was rich, creamy and delicious, and the naan was warm, soft and perfect for scooping up every last bite! I especially loved the spicy garlic naan. The vibe is super casual and because it's in a convenient store, you have options to grab anything else you may be craving :) the staff were nice and helpful as well. Driving down Ajo, you'd never guess there's great Indian food inside a Chevron gas station. The only hint is a small sign that simply says "Indian Food." I ordered through DoorDash--Curry Chicken, Butter Chicken, Garlic Naan, and a Mango Lassi--and everything was delicious. The Butter Chicken especially stood out with its rich tandoori-flavored sauce that was perfectly sweet, savory, and buttery. The staff were very friendly, greeting me with a smile right away, and the service was impressively quick. The dining area was spotless, which is especially nice considering it's located inside a gas station. The usual bane of Indian food in the U.S. persists -- tomato purée and cream-based gravies dominate the flavor profile. The butter chicken here is no exception: bland, lacking aroma from whole spices, and missing the essential tandoori preparation that gives it smokiness and depth. The chicken may have been pre-cooked or stale (which is acceptable for this dish), but it didn't taste like tandoori by any means. I haven't dined in -- this spot seems geared toward quick bites off the freeway rather than a full dining experience. Other menu items are similarly underwhelming, which unfortunately reflects the broader state of Indian cuisine across Tucson and much of the U.S. If you're hungry and craving Indian food, it'll do the job -- just don't expect anything memorable. So after eyeing this place every time we've been in that part of town, we finally decided to try it just as every street in the area is completely torn to sh*t. Haha. Compared with Sher-e-Punjab, our usual Indian eatery in Tucson, the Saag Paneer and Dal Makhani we had at Twisted were actually better both in texture and taste. The fella who took our order was also polite and attentive. And they give you an enormous container of fluffy white rice with each middling-sized entree. The downside is that for the pleasure, haha, of eating off paper plates with plastic utensils inside a cordoned off section of a gas station minimart, Twisted's prices are basically the same as Sher-e-Punjab. Plus Sher has a full bar, waiters, real dishes and flatware, a pleasant decor, etc. I guess it comes down to what you're after. If Twisted is convenient and your main goal is good Indian food, then take-out here is a good option. OTOH, if you're dining out, Sher-e-Punjab beats them hands-down. read more

I honestly wasn't expecting much. I came here on my lunch break. They give discounts to medical professionals and a few others that I can't recall. There is space to seat down but of course you are in a gas station so there's some in and out traffic. The service was polite and quick. They accept call in orders and orders for large groups. Great during the lunch hour. They gave me two utensils but one was opened. They also gave me two plates and I greatly appreciated that. The food was very good. Lunch for 3 with an appetizer, roti/naan and three entrees was $80. And plenty of leftovers for at least two more meals. We had Chicken Tikka Massala, Chani Massala and Shahai Paneer. Flavors were rich and the portions large. The Roti and Naan were on the oily side, I'd probably stick with the rice next time. We ordered the chani massala spicy and it was delicious. Right in the sweet spot of kick and flavor. Mint and tamarind chutneys, not spicy, were available on request. You can buy your choice of beverage from the Chevron. I have a list for places in Tucson with good Indian food and Twisted Indian is now on that list! So, it's in a gas station right off the westbound I-10 ramps for Ajo. I think that's hilarious, but there is no funny business about the food and service. There are a few tables set up and after you order at the counter they will bring the food right to your table. While we were eating, we saw quite a few to-go orders being placed and lots of phone-in and meal delivery service orders, too. The menu is just the right size, though I was disappointed to not see korma, but the Vegetable Samosas, Chicken Tikka Masala, Veg Biryani, Roti, Garlic Naan, Raita, and Kadai Paneer that we had were spot on and tasted wonderful. I went here (with my co- foodie) on lunch Tuesday and I must say, this place is decent. We tried two chicken recipes, a fruity drink and hot chai for me. The servers were courteous and happy. India heaven! If there is a word "twist" or "twisted" in the name of the business, it's the same family. It all started with the Twisted Tandoor food truck a very few years back. Great food truck! The owner decided to go brick and mortar, but while literally working on it, he suffered a heart attack and sadly passed away. The wife, nephews, nieces and other family members have taken up the tradition and now have, I don't know, four locations now. This is one of them in the Chevron gas station on Ajo, adjoining the In-N-Out lot. Even though it's in a gas station, there are tables and seating. The tikka masala is superb. I tried the butter chicken, which is like a tomato-y masala. It is equally superb! It's a coin toss as to which I'm going to get. The curry is excellent, too. I always order a mango lassi to drink. It is so good and I'm happy that my homemade lassi tastes just like it. The secret is using the right mango pulp. One occasion I took a fellow worker and she was excited to get a salted lassi, a different drink. She said it was really good and refreshing and I got a taste, and it was. I just prefer the sweet drink. I didn't care much for the twisted chicken wings. OK, but not great. But hey, I go there often for absolutely great food. I order medium hot, but I will definitely go for more hot as medium is pretty mild. And there is plenty of food, lasts me two or three meals. The service is great, very friendly, they take pride in what they do. 5* = A top favorite. Mind-blowing good. I will definitely return and I will go out of my way to go here. Worth every dime of my money. 4* = Outstanding. Tucson-top-tier. Some elements not quite as good as it gets, but it still is worthy of my regular business. 3* = Good experience. As a veteran of Oklahoma Joes was not intimidated by gas station food and this place did not disappoint. Do not believe the negative reviews and try it out. Value (B+) Prices are on par with what you would expect at a traditional sit down Indian restaurant and food is served on paper plates so I am knocking them a bit for Value. Plan on spending around $20 to be full. Service (A-) So the owners are super nice and the staff is super friendly. The food comes out pretty quick. They bring it to your table and clean up after you. You do need to order at a counter. Also the free water is self service. It is not an A plus because (1) it was my wife's birthday and they did not acknowledge it (2) the owner struggled with packing up our leftovers. (3) tried to upsell me off menu items (pet peeve of mine since I know they margin drivers) Note if the prices were not on par with sit down restaurants I would not mind. But since they are choosing to charge the same prices my expectation of service increases also. Quality (A) The food is really good. The quality of the food is on par with any sit down nice Indian restaurant in any decent sized city. You will be impressed with the quality. I don't know what I expected but indeed this is an Indian restaurant in a gas station where you would expect to find some kind of "Pizza2Go" or something at the back of the quickie mart. And the food was, without hyperbole, outstanding. I ordered the Paneer Tikka Masala as hot as they were willing to make it and it delivered (spice fans take note). The gravy was full of visible spices and even a little chunk of bay leaf. It was creamy, a little decadent, and flavorful with just the slightest hint of acidity (brightness). I am not sure how this could be improved. Like I wouldn't change a thing. I also ordered some vegetable samosas which were great! This is one of the strangest but most pleasant surprises I have encountered in Tucson. There are a lot of fancier places which aren't anywhere as good. My co-workers and I decided to give Twisted a try as we are all fans of Indian food and there aren't any nearby Indian options for lunch. We tried the baingan bharta (eggplant), chicken tikka masala, chana masala, and samosas. It all was made quickly and ready for pick-up as noted by Doordash. Everything was packaged nicely and waiting on the counter for me when I arrived. There are a few tables located inside the gas station, if you wanted to dine in. The staff is welcoming and asked me if I needed anything else with my order when I arrived. For the amount charged, I felt the portions were a bit on the smaller side, we weren't still hungry after eating, but we did notice that the containers of food were not what we expected. Anyhow, the food was good. It wasn't very spicy, nor was it bland, but we also would have appreciated more seasoning, spices. The chicken tikka masala tasted a lot like butter chicken. The best were the samosas; they weren't greasy, outside wasn't over fried and was crunchy, and the inside had a good amount of savory, vegetable filling.
