Privately owned and poorly managed. Never have I arrived anywhere and been blatantly insulted by the bouncer. I came to twist (I go very often) with my cousin from Uruguay and the bouncer literally pushed my cousin out of the line and screamed at him saying he will not let him in without a passport. We were taken aback considering we had just arrived and he immediately told me to stop smiling (i was laughing nervously at my cousin) and I asked the man to please relax and not be so rude (this was my cousins welcome to Miami). He immediately began calling me annoying and obnoxious and said he was "ready to ruin my night" honestly no idea what he meant by that and stunned that anyone would say that. I walked away shocked and noticed a man in a suit jacket behind him who I approached and finally explained that international people must have a passport or picture of passport which honestly can also be fake so I don't get what the issue is. Obviously I understood and I simply said that it would be nice if the bouncer could be a bit more polite. The bouncer noticed me talking to the man and immediately approached us and continued to insult me and tell me to get out of there. I retained my calm demeanor throughout the whole encounter and of course the man in the suit jacket escaped while he could. I said whatever and walked away as the man (bouncer) continued to insult me. Honestly I've spent countless nights at twist and paid for the incredibly expensive $18 Red Bull and vodka's because I always considered this a nice place to be, but never again. Not feeling it at all... Which is a shame, cause everyone spoke sop highly of this club and I was truly looking forward to it. My first impression as I walked in is that the place looked like it would be amazing, but 15 steps in, and found myself in a room full of smokers and lit cigarettes. For a none smoker, I would have expected this to be an outdoor bar area to help your non smoking clients enjoy their air... so I moved on to the next space, an outdoor space, with no question as to why people were smoking there... I moved on to the back bar... with another crowd of smoking people... This was my whole experience as I moved from bar area to bar area... What really blew my bulb is on the dance floor people smoking and blowing the smoke into my face.. not even upwards... honestly.. it was like a sea of zombie smokers. I learned on this night of the Florida policy that bars that don't serve food are allowed to smoke inside.. but with so many rooms to chose from, you think you could provide at least one of these to be non-smoking for people who don't want to smell like ash to enjoy your club. My visit lasted less than an hour... but slim chance I will ever come back. I live here in south beach...twist is the number one gay go to spot in Miami Beach. I love that it has 5 different rooms so if you get bored of a song then you can switch rooms...unfortunately I often get bored of the music in all 5 rooms, I would love it if they dedicated one of the rooms to hip hop twerking kinda good shit, then I would definitely change my rating to 5 stars! The best option for hip shaking non techno music, would be the Latin room...deff my favorite. All the security guards here are chill as fuck! The bartenders are almost all really nice...the drinks are strong, and for the most part the music is decent.... PLEASE TWIST; dedicate one of the rooms to hip hop or even just one night a week...I promise you your guests will enjoy it! read more

I've been coming to twist for years. I heard some news from some friends so I came to check it out and confirmed it. The latin room on Saturdays is dead. Now it's just a room with reggaeton constantly pouring through. It was empty most of the night when it usually fills up because of the mix in music. I used to go with my group of friends to drink, dance, and have a nice time, but the salsa is gone, merengue is over, bachata has left the building. It's very sad because this was one of the last few good latin dancing spots, especially for gays, in miami. I guess I'll go back to searching for random nights or events that are on a Saturday. Twist is still good for those that like the same music it's played, the gogo dancers, drinks, or scene vibe it has which can be fun. It's just if your main idea was latin dancing, you shouldn't come here anymore. Unfortunately because I loved it and Aquiles is one of the best bartenders I've had at any bar. Horrible horrible service and cannot keep up with their rules and definitely a place where they pick and choose who goes in. Friends and I went last night and bouncer with blond hair and horrendous haircut (like hunter from ginny and georgia if u watched) denied my friend's id due to having a corner cut BUT was let in before several times with the same id. They asked for a picture of the full id and my friend showed them a picture that had 3 of his ids and said "yea there's too many red flags cant accept" like why ask for a picture if you know you won't accept? I also asked if they can scan it and responded "yea thats not what ids are for" i asked for a simple response not her smart ass response. Then we spoke to a guy in some suit that seemed to be a supervisor/manager and told him what was going on. He explained that they should have never let him in with his id cut from the corner so we asked if we can show a passport picture and said yes ok. So we waited a few mins for him to receive a picture of it and once we got it that bouncer security girl told the guy in the suit "yea im not letting them in" and we asked to show it to him and he lead us to the person we were having problems with! She saw it and said " yea no not letting you in being a d**k isnt going to help" which keep in mind we were not even being rude but obviously defensive because the way the situation was being handled was R I D I C U L O U S. There was another group she had denied access for what seemed to be the same reason and they got in line again and one of them showed a picture of what im assuming was a pic of an id or passport and she let them in. Pretty sure she even took a pic of us which really was unnecessary because its not like we were physically or verbally hurting or threatening anyone!!!She was obviously on some power high trip which is ridiculous to even have staff that love to do that kind of stuff. The best way for me to explain how I feel about Twist is like this: when I visited a friend in Miami recently and we had one day to spend on South Beach, we ended up just going to Twist three separate times over the course of the day. It's a great option if you'd rather find just one spot to spend a night out rather than taking some barhopping risks because there are so many rooms that you can move between as your mood and energy levels change. There's a music video lounge, a room full of dancers, several dance floors with different soundtracks and - my favorite part - an open air tiki-ish kinda courtyard with its own little bar if you feel like getting some air or having a conversation. THE BEST TIME! It was my first time at a Gay bar/lounge and I have to say I loved it! When I first got there it took me some time to unwind all because I wasn't use to having people being "out" so freely, but once I got a few drinks in and sang along to a few songs I felt so comfortable to be there and even kiss my girlfriend right at the bar sitting on the stools. The place is majority gay guys but in my opinion that is the best kind of atmosphere to be around plus I was not trying to hook up with anyone I was going for a good time. There are different bars and rooms inside and two floors with a outside back bar. I enjoy a good fist pump and dance and to my surprise I had a dance partner who enjoyed fist pumping too. I saw Twist "spring to attention" on my feed tonight, and I thought back to that one night years ago when a friend dragged me here on his birthday. Shuddering, then I thought about how I had wanted to parody the reviewing styles of some of the more iconic Yelpers. It crossed my mind that I could a) review a gay club and b) do "the Orlando" at the same time. Unfortunately, I then came to the realization that I don't really know how Orlando would review a gay club. He'd probably reference the Peloponnesian War, the Holy Roman Empire, or something. Or maybe he'd spin a magical heartwarming yarn of Zeus seducing Ganymedes up at Olympus. I don't know. I just don't know if I'm "up" for that. So yeah, Twist. Yes, it's a "big club," boasting both "length" and "girth." It's dark, and there are a lot of sweaty men swaying to bad house music. There was little or no room to walk, and as I made my way (quite terrified, I might add) through what I think was the main room, I was hit on by more men in the span of two minutes than I had been by females in my entire tenure of liking girls since the 3rd grade when I suddenly noticed that most of those stupid, annoying girls were pretty hot. And it wasn't even close. I distinctly remember thinking exactly that, and it was a rather depressing thought. I think my canned response was "sorry, I'm straight," or something to that effect. Having successfully "beaten the men off," I decided to get some air, as that of the main room was "swollen" with a nauseating flood of testosterone. I noted that there was an outside patio, and swiftly slipped "out the back door." The music was a little better out there, actually, approaching the vibe that was found at the more conventional clubs early on in the night....kind of a tribal, jungle-y, lounge-y Francois K-mashed-up-with-Steve Lawler thing going on. I took a deep breath, smelling the lightly astringent South Beach air. There was an irreverent tropical bar serving fruity drinks. It felt like kitschy, mainstream gay Key West. All was OK. And then I saw a band of shirtless men wearing loincloths. Apparently, these were the famous Twist strippers. They were dancing with the patrons for money. I turned my back in hopes that they wouldn't try to grind on me. This was a mistake. While the strippers left me alone, turning my butt to the crowd seemed to be construed as an open invitation. Not 10 seconds later, a guy approached. "Sorry, I'm straight." The guy laughed. "Oh, you must be in hell!" "Yeah man, pretty much." The guy was cool. We talked for a minute and then he shifted his attention elsewhere. As I watched oily men grind on each other, I became very bored. There were few women to look at. I started to wish I was at a standard South Beach club getting ignored by women. I don't know how long I was out there, as I seemed to be in a place where space and time had "twist"-ed. I'll give the place a "rock-solid" three stars. It is very good at being what it is. If looking at, and occasionally partaking in, big hunks of meat is your thing, this is your place. People who would enjoy it: Greek gods, women who crave male attention without the typical straight-dude bullshit. People who would hate it: Average frustrated chumps. read more

To think I had sold this gay bar down the river as just being a quaint little speakeasy looking thing was a major oversight on my part. The whole while I assumed TWIST to be just a small one-dimensional experience but then my two dates directed me past the decent gentleman at the entrance bar and out to the back patio. A little free-standing shack was where we were headed, the "boom boom" room as it were. In it, we discovered muscled men who looked like they'd just walked off a Madonna music video from the 90s. Donning tiny booty shorts with serious black leather shit-kickers, it proved to be a look that might never perish. As Chi-Chi the Colombian drag hostess welcomed the sea of men, my friends and I ogled the fellas on display. More than anything, I wanted to see how low they'd drop their boyshorts before nothing separated them from $20 and a lap-grinding decision. Upstairs, it was a full-on body2body contact dance party. When the room fills up, the guests get familiar and all that's missing is a fireman in costume to extinguish the body heat index. Twist is Score Night Club with a twist. Twist brings the dirty and the raunch. Walking in, one will feel immediately dirty. The place exudes that feel. Look around and it is heaven for those looking for hot men. They even offer lap dances. This brings me to my first observation of the night. My first trip to the rodeo was years ago and was prompted by my friend who was looking for some fun and patiently sat through a night of hetero locales. Our final stop would not only be a treat for him but also for myself and the other two females we were with, as we had idealized fantasies of what we would soon be privy to. I was giddy at the chance to go to a gay night club as my refernces up until then had been Sex & The City, and Queer As Folk. Basically these shows have taught women that these places are our dreams come true. Amazing music, sexy men who can (and love to) dance, and aren't trying to talk (or grab) their way into your pants! My dreams were shattered when I walked into Twist. Great music yes, sexy men yes, lots of dancing yes, but we were not being treated like the Godesses that the entertainment industry had promised! I went back a few nights ago and had a better experience. I appreciate that you can find all walks of life here. Everyone is welcomed and celebrated. From the friendly bouncer who chatted us up outside, to the really nice bartender who kept refilling our waters (without being asked) to make sure we were hydrated (we had clearly arrived at the water-drinking part of the night), and even the creepers who proposed threesomes because hey, who wouldn't be flattered by that? After a failed attempt at finding a club with good jams we finally made it to Twist... We knew the gays would bring it! The place was packed and had three different areas to get your dance on: - Salsa room in the front - 2nd floor dance area -- TVs showing the music vids of the song playing so it was double the fun. They played a lot of top 40 hits up there -- we got down to Miley, Beyoncé, Mark Anthony, Shakira, etc. - Music and projector screen in the outdoor courtyard -- good spot to chair dance, rest your feet and enjoy some fresh air. The place was packed with people, the drinks were affordable ($10 range), and the music was something we could sing along to (versus house music). Everyone was so friendly too -- everywhere we went people were striking up convos. We had a blast! They also had some male go-go dancers (I guess that's the closest comparison)... Hugely entertaining to watch the gents drool over these tanned beefy men. It gets HOT. They don't have AC going to my knowledge, rather several fans blowing. If there's a better gay club out there, I have yet to be there. The building splits the party up into multiple rooms each with their own theme. Suggestion to first timers, have a drink or two in the first bar area before moving on to the outdoor area and on to the stripper room, your in for an eye full!! This place is a staple of the gay community in SoFl and I always like bringing out of town girlfriends here for two reasons, one there is always a party going on, and two they get a kick out of it, especially the crew from the East Coast. AWESOME. Stumbled upon this place at 4:30am when we were on our way back to our hotel from another party. There was still a crowd of people standing outside, so instead of calling it a night, we told the cab driver to pull over. After the cabbie said, "Are you girls sure you wanna go there? It's a gay bar." It was DONE! Cool set up inside the place. They have several rooms-- a regular indoor bar, an outdoor bar, and an upstairs dance floor... but when we overheard someone say, "He's over at the stripper bar!" our ears perked up, and we knew we had to head over to said stripper bar immediately. That's when the craziness began. The place was swarming with half-naked men who FLOCKED to us when we walked in. One of them (who looked a lot like LL Cool J) pulled my friend away and gave her a "lap dance." Let's just say after he was done... she had a huge grin on her face and said she wanted to wash her hands LOL. It was then that we discovered most of the strippers there aren't actually gay... The bartenders were super fun, friendly, and cute as well. They keep it really dark inside, and dudes are making out & touching each other all over the place, so if that's not how you roll, you might feel uncomfortable here. Good thing I am a huge pervert. The only reason why this place doesn't get 5 stars is because one of my friends was pick-pocketed; someone stole her cellphone from her purse. Three nights in South Beach. Three nights at Twist. It took about that long for me to like coming here. They really should give out maps because there are so many rooms (think big house, not bath house). Downstairs would be fine if not for the strange European TV clips they play. They kind of mix videos of people shooting fireworks out of their ass with clips from Jackass: The Movie. Then upstairs opens. I call the first room the red room (PS: it's red). Lots of techno/drum and bass type music. If you go back there's another bar in an enclosed patio. I spent most of my time on the other side. Lots of female vocals playing and a small dance floor. There's even an adjacent sitting area just in case you want to sit one out. Lucky for me Gaby was working my first two nights. She's definitely my favorite bartender there. The best way I could describe Twist is the way I would describe its customers - a hot mess. I was dragged to Twist on a Saturday night around 2:30 in the morning. There were many rooms (7, I think I've heard, in total?), each with its own unique vibe. A friend gave me "the tour" and the rooms varied from techno to pop to a stripper room to a bar. It felt like many different places all-in-one. While the diversity of rooms was a positive, there were many things left to be desired... -The ceilings in many of the rooms were SO LOW. The whole place was pretty packed, and that COMBINED with the low ceilings made it feel extremely claustrophobic at times. If I put my hands up I could probably have touched the ceiling in some of the rooms. -The people that attend Twist were...interesting. Though there were some cute guys, there were also some sketchy ones, and at one point in the night a guy even tried to open my friends purse and steal her stuff. Luckily she caught him in the act. Many others were going at each other like they were in a hotel room, very messy all around. -The security guards were constantly shouting at you to "keep it moving". I know there are a lot of people at this place, but c'mon, we can't always keep it moving if we have nowhere to go. -Everywhere felt kind of...dirty. From the fat, hairy shirtless man that was raving away on the dance floor to the bathrooms (yuck), I felt scared to touch anything for fear of the diseases I might contract. I'd recommend this place if you want to dance and plan on drinking heartily. It almost perfectly encompasses the two star Yelp description: Meh. I've experienced better.
