My family is from Dickson, and every since I was a little kid every time we come to visit we make it a point to come to Catfish Kitchen. I always get the half order of catfish fillet, usually with a baked potato, and I have NEVER been disappointed. No joke, some of the best catfish I have had in my life! I was able to go last week while visiting, and tried the spicy catfish fillet for the first time. The breading was a little thicker than their regular fillet, but crisp and full of flavor without being overly spicy. The sides are served family style, which is dangerous for me, because I could easily take down a family's worth of creamy coleslaw, white beans with red pepper relish, and hushpuppies before my catfish even has an opportunity to get to the table. Those hushpuppies..... soooooo good! Nice and crisp on the outside and fluffy on the inside. Large parking lot out front with the iconic Catfish statue alerting everyone that they got the right place for catfish. The interior is unassuming, and according to my dad, hasn't changed much in the last 50 years. It's clean though, and in my opinion, if you have a good thing going, then why change? Delicious find not Too far from Nashville! Hush puppies brought out first, fresh and hot, not spicy and no jalapeños.... Good creamy coleslaw. Then the catfish filets: we ordered the regular and the spicy, it wasn't really that spicy, and both were great! The fries were great (like the ones you get at Five Guys), hot and so good! Grease bomb. I had high hopes when we saw a full parking lot and then when they delivered the hush puppies and coleslaw, which were both very good. The catfish, onion rings and French fries were all so greasy we couldn't enjoy. My catfish filets didn't have much fish to them, so the ratio of batter and fry was too much. Husbands was slightly better, with bigger pieces of filet. Not sure if it was old oil, bad oil, not hot enough or sat in oil too long, but the grease was just way too much. Fries were lukewarm and kinda soggy. Onion rings waaay too salty. I love good fried catfish and was excited to try this restaurant, but unless we hear that they've changed their fry technique, we won't be back. read more

This use to be the place to go for great catfish. We went there a lot. This is definitely No longer the case. The first time we noticed the difference, waitress said that they had switched to a different breading for the fish. It's really not a breading any longer, it's a batter. It doesn't look the same or taste the same. Very disappointing. We tried it again after a bit... disappointing. We ate there last night for the Final time. We won't be back. What a shame. Usually the restaurant was packed, last night there were only about 5 to 8. I've heard that they're under new ownership... That I'm not sure about but I am sure the change is Not positive. read more

The Great: May well be the absolute best hush puppies I've ever had in my life. I literally could have sat there and eaten nothing else. we also had frog legs as an app and they were perfectly done. The Good: the sides were all good. Mayo slaw, white beans, fries. the bad: the catfish was all over cooked. Both the whole fish and fillets. Was very disappointing considering the frog legs were cooked just right. Also thought the batter wasn't what you typically find. Seemed to have less cornmeal to flour ratio. Sis and I went out for dinner and chose Catfish Kitchen as I had wanted to go since I was a boy. Sis, though not a catfish fan, was willing especially since I was going to pay. We arrived early on a weeknight which I recommend as the parking lot is always full on weekend evenings and the restaurant began to fill up while we were eating. Sis had veggies and I decided to skip the catfish and have the ham dinner. It came with a huge piece of country ham (wonderfully salty, but unfortunately, way too dry), white beans with onion, slaw (you get your choice of mayo or vinegar), and a baked potato with whatever you want. Oh, and sweet tea and hushpuppies. All good though I'd pass on the vinegar as it was real vinegary. Attached is a photo of the meal I had and you can see the size of that slice of ham - and thick, too. I made two more good-sized meals with it and moistened it up with some red-eye gravy I made using some other ham fat I had. Service was adequate, but for some reason I wasn't blown away. I will return sometime and have the catfish which is, after all, their specialty. read more

Been driving past this place for years. I'm not a huge fan of catfish and when we are camping at Montgomery Bell, we hit some of the other local offerings. However, after our amazing meal last night, this may jump to my local top spot. Don't let the big catfish statue over the sign out front scare you...this is some seriously good food with extremely friendly service. The restaurant was clean and had southern charm. I mentioned the spectacular service, but let's talk food! As the name implies, catfish is what they offer. Filets, steaks and whole...fillets are just that, boneless and perfectly prepared. A whole fish is just that and you get to work through it. The steak is still a little confusing to me as its not the whole fish, but there are still bones. I'm sure catfish aficionados understand the difference and can explain the benefits, but our crew went with fillets and most of us had the spicy. It was awesome! The fish was mild and not too spicy. In fact, I'd like it a little hotter. I had the all you can eat and that started with 3 fillets. I'm a pretty big eater and only got through 2. The good news is I brought the third one home for a sandwich! Their house made tarter sauce was also perfect and my son felt it was the perfect fry sauce. He also had the country ham steak and left nothing on the plate. Others at our table had the seafood platter and opted to skip the oysters but had extra shrimp and all was good. Shrimp was second best to catfish. Scallop and crab were just ok. Everyone at the table shared in hush puppies, white beans (with relish and onions, of course) and cole slaw. Crazy as it sounds, their baked potatoes with butter and sour cream were also really, really good. Very simple, but done perfect. Now, I can't wrap this up without spending just one more second on the hush puppies. Little fried savory delights with the right combination of crispy outsides and soft, warm onion flavored insides...we had 2 plates full. Thus the reason I didn't eat more catfish. I am obsessed with this place. My parent's were camping in Montgomery Bell so we were driving out to meet them. My dad suggested that we stop in the Catfish Kitchen before the park so we did. First of all, it's in the middle of nowhere but trust the address. It's right. Second, the restaurant is like stepping back in time. It's so unpretentious and charming with a lovely view of a lake and the Fall leaves. Third, the food was delicious. Probably the best slaw I've ever had and I don't even like coleslaw. I ordered the vinegar slaw and my husband ordered the mayonnaise base. I'm not a huge slaw person or a mayonnaise person but the mayonnaise version was better and not mayonnaisey. The hushpuppies were fresh and delish, the fries fresh and homemade, and the catfish wasn't fishy. It was perfect and cozy and I loved everything about the visit. read more

Found this place after playing greystone golf course. If you're looking for a real mom and pops, family style, southern comfort food... THIS PLACE IS IT! Full on legit. Catfish was clean tasting and mild. Batter was great. Delicious! We got the all you can eat special. All you can eat EVERYTHING, that is. Hush puppies, white beans, fries, slaw... I LOVE locally owned places like this and hope everyone will support it. I'd drive from Nashville out here just for the catfish dinner. It's THAT good! Just passing through while traveling across country, hubby and I were craving catfish. Found Catfish Kitchen right here on Yelp, and after the reviews, we drove over 10 miles from our hotel, after driving all day, just to try their catfish. Once there, and seeing the "Seafood Platter", I had to order that (lover of fried oysters.....ya..). Hubby ordered the Boneless Catfish (wow, didn't know boneless fish existed!). First thing I have to rave about is the coffee. After eating out for the past three nights, this has to be the best coffee ever! Then, the coleslaw in vinegar (don't inhale the vinegar, you'll cough forever), never had coleslaw that way before, but was really good. Now what you've all been wondering...Yes, the catfish has got to be the best. It's very flavorful (but not that nasty over flavor taste you get with some catfish), and moist (I hate dried over fried catfish). The jumbo fried shrimp was just that, "Jumbo", and guess what? It tasted just like shrimp! Not that mild, could be shrimp taste you get from store bought shrimp. The oysters (my fave) was just awesome! Call me weird, but I just love a strong flavored fried oyster, and these did not disappoint. The scallops were OK, but a bit over fried, and the crabcake was......welll...........crabcake. The atmosphere was casual (best way to enjoy a meal), the waitress was a real sweetheart, and very attentive, and the cashier was welcoming, and friendly as well. Best catfish I have ever eaten! The fish was flaky and not fishy. It is a flour breading. The Cole slaw we got was the mayonnaise based one and it was also the best. Hush puppies are home made and also out of this world. The beans were just like the good old way your grandma would make them. The French fries were the only thing I would not order again. They were soggy and undercooked. They tasted like they were only fried once instead of the typical two times like everywhere else. We have not had a chance to try desert. Too full to even think about it. You need to make a trip here. You will be happy you did. read more
