Thought we'd try this place for my husband's birthday. Surprised first off that they charge $1.00 for a glass of tap water. Ordered prime rib and chicken Marsala. Portions were small (other than the prime rib, which was the weight it was supposed to be). Sides are extra and small portions. Dinners came with a frozen crappy breadstick, not at all the quality we expected with the rest of the meal. A bit expensive but the food was good. We will go again sometime soon. The server was excellent, friendly, and great to deal with. We had the smoked prime rib which was tender enough to cut with a fork and almost the perfect amount of smoke. Maybe a bit too much but still tasty. It was next door to a gonja store so as you walked thru the front door you got a big whiff of smoke. My gps took us to the back door for some reason but we drove around the square and found parking in the front. Every time we eat here the food is fantastic! They have a new Steak Special that is out of this world! I also get the fresh farm to table Salad with their homemade Honey Mustard and sautés the wine demi-glazed mushrooms pair perfectly with the steak or chicken. Their excellence in customer service is the best in Waverly and they make you feel right at home with perfect southern charm. The music is what makes this restaurant also the perfect place for a romantic date night and if you want wine you can bring your own favorite vintage for a small corkage fee. This restaurant is a little piece of class in the middle of a tiny town. I may be a bit partial because this restaurant is located in my hometown but overall the experience and the atmosphere is everything. Walked in to dine with my grandfather and we were greeted kindly by the person at the hostess stand and brought to our table. The kindness of the staff was amazing and the owners of the restaurant work alongside the staff which I think is fantastic. My grandpa had the salmon and I had a specially made pasta dish with marinara, mozzarella, garlic, and mushrooms. We both felt our food was delicious and well made. We each enjoyed a side salad as well. The atmosphere of this restaurant is absolutely everything. From the historic photos all around the restaurant of Waverly to the spiral staircase and delicately placed lights throughout the restaurant there is so much amazing detail within the restaurant. The high ceilings are breathtaking! If you are local or just passing through, I highly recommend stopping at this fabulous gem in the middle of the court square. The only tricky part is ensuring you come when they are open. Always call to make sure they are open. With Waverly being such a small town, they are open at reasonable times in which they know customers will come in for a meal. Samuel's on the Square was really good even with a limited temporary menu. Our server, Charlotte, was really good, efficient and friendly. They don't serve alcohol but Charlotte gave me directions to the well-stocked Thrifty Liquor, just 3 blocks away. She brought nice wine glasses to the table while I was picking up a bottle. We shared a calamari appetizer served with Tabasco. I've never had it that way and it was really good. I had the Capon Florentine and liked it very much. My wife had the Fettuccine Alfredo with the house-made sauce and said it was the best she'd ever had; better than any she had at the exclusive Italian restaurants we used to frequent back in Los Angeles. read more

We came here for my husband's birthday. I'd say the food was 3.5 stars. Our kids burgers and fries were good, my husbands bbq pork was good (sounded better in the menu description, not among the best), and my chicken Marsala & mashed potatoes was pretty good. My two food complaints are that I wish the honey mustard dipping sauce for the fried green tomatoes didn't taste like just plain yellow mustard - that's the element I liked least about the meal. (Wish they would have added more honey so that it didn't taste like pure yellow mustard, or some sort of more gourmet honey mustard sauce recipe that tasted better), and then the Tuscan bread (which I had read was supposed to be a good choice) actually had a rubbery texture(!) (and they served it with olive oil and fresh pepper - but a drizzle of balsamic in the oil too would've been really nice!). Also I wish they would've done something nice for my husband's birthday like bring him a little slice of dessert or at least a little scoop of ice cream (I did offhandedly mention it was his birthday), but maybe they don't do that sort of thing - a bit disappointing nonetheless when going out to dinner to celebrate a birthday. The waiter and owner seemed very personable and friendly though. There was hardly anyone there when we were eating so it was pretty quiet, but we did go in for dinner right when they opened, so perhaps it gets busier later. The atmosphere was pleasant & classy; although as we were sitting there, we talked privately amongst ourselves and both of us felt that we had a lot of good suggestions for improving the restaurant inside that would draw more people in (we would love to share those with the owner at some point). I want to like this place, but I'm in between 3 & 4 stars, so rounding up. :) Overall, was a nice, casual, pleasant experience. read more

First time at Samuels for my husband and I. Inside was just beautiful. The staff were wonderful and pleasant. Not a beef eater but thought I would treat myself with a Rib Eye and my husband had the Prime Rib. Can't say enough about this place. From the young man (Samuel) that met us at the door to the cook (also Samuel) who checked on us at our table, treated us like family. I had chicken Marsala it was so good. Probably the Best I've ever had. My hubby had the best steak he ever tasted (the filet) , the kids had chicken Alfredo. Our friends had catfish. SO worth the drive to Waverly, just 30 minutes from Dickson. Atmosphere is beautiful , with soft music and private seating. The food was outstanding! Fried green tomatoes, roast beef with real mashed potatoes and fresh green beans. Italian grilled chicken with spinach, provolone, marinara & sautéed mushrooms. Absolutely melts in your mouth. Stopped in on a Friday night early. There were about six tables occupied. Service was slow on arrival. Only six of the eight got our drinks that were originally ordered. The other two waited another ten minutes. Food arrived finally bit several orders were short, which is really not a big deal (butter steak sauce drink refills, etc). What was a big deal is the 10 minutes we waited without the corrections. One of our party had to go find another waitress to get the rest of our meals. What made it worse was food was not hot and three of the baked potatoes were not done. Rest of food was generally good but I don't think we will be back. Our waitress Danielle seemed very unhappy and would not come to our table unless we went and hunted her down. I don't think being family owned is always a good thing. read more

Where to start ... Ordered the shrimp empanadas appetizer - they were out so we ordered bread for an appetizer - which most places give you free - the olive oil was rancid and the odd side that was with it was dried out, old shredded parmesan cheese. so we couldn't eat our appetizer. I order a filet - they were out and he suggest the ribeye that wasn't on the menu so I order that medium rare with a side salad and the house balsamic vinegarette (in big bold letters on the menu) He brings the salad (which is only lettuce, tomato's and croutons) with a side of cheese wine dressing and tells me is the house dressing. I told him that was not what the menu said but he said I must have misunderstood but before I could ask for a menu he walked off - Whatever. When my steak arrives I could tell before I cut into it it was waaayyy overcooked and was about 1/4" thick (thin?) I told him it was overcooked but not to bring it back and take if off my check. I knew if they cooked me a new steak it was going to be another thin, cheap piece of meat and even if they cooked it medium rare it wasnt worth what they were going to charge me - not sure what that would be because it wasn't on the menu but the steaks ran $19 - 22 and what he brought me was not a $20 steak. Plus, I didn't want to order anything else and have my husband eat his food, wait on me to get my food and then have to watch me eat because he was done. Not an ideal dinner situation. My husband's hamburger steak was good but the "steak fries" were actually potato wedges like you get at a gas station.(but not as good), and he said they had an odd apple taste. I took his word for it because at that point I wasn't putting anything else from the restaurant in mouth. Our waiter was a young kid and I think we were his first table because it was pretty obvious he hasn't done this for long! Would I go back? NEVER! And, I read the Yelp reviews before I went and they were good, so I thought it only fair to inform you that, based on my experience, if you are looking for a restaurant in Waverly, skip this one. read more
