I would definently want to stay here if I was riding the Hatfield McCoy trail system. Probably the nicest bathrooms at any campground I have stayed at for the following reasons The bathroom is made for one person, it is heated, has a sink, toilet, chair, and a lot of hangers. No need to scramble to clear out, no using a batwing door toilet or shower while others are waiting. Privacy is nice and they do a good job keeping it clean. We came to camp, due to the wet weather the owner let us stay next to the store/restaurant instead of the camping area, this worked out immensely better for us. As we were on motorcycles this alps helped with firewood, he did bring us some though. The store is fairly empty of camping items with the exception of shirts and maps. Assuming this was because we were so close to town and the main clientele were Atv riders that can go directly into town. There was no coffee available on the store(actually it was just more of a check in counter, not a store at all. I think there was one drink cooler for Pepsi products, a rack of candy bars and t shirts and that was about it. Mid October, the restaurant was closed, although we heard it was really good...:( The road up is a bit challenging, but there were plenty of large and oversized RVs and campers so it is passable.

What a great way to spend a summer day. This is a rafting review, we only came up for the day, but…read morewe are already talking about next year and doing a two day visit and double our rafting fun. We picked the Lower New River, a full day adventure. We kicked off a little bit before 9 and had a quick equipment assignment and then climbed aboard a well seasoned bus. Its a bus and it served its purpose. During the ride we got a basic but funny safety briefing. You can tell these guys love their job and enjoy making life fun. After about a 25 minute ride, we arrived at the departure spot and got assigned a raft. We are a family of 4 so they assigned two more people to our raft and our guide, Jackson was phenomenal! Seriously, Jackson is so chill and personable, we could have just hung out and listened to his adventures in life. He did a really great job making everyone feel welcomed, valued and appreciated. For me, I know I would have been barking rules at our novice tubers, but he just gave specific instructions on what to expect, what to do if the 'in case' happens, and provided assurance that he would protect everyone. He also provided fun little facts about the river and history of the Gorge. We saw class II to class IV rapids and there were some intense moments. It took me a couple rapids to figure out that Jackson would strategically place our boat in the best part of the rapids for maximum effect, which made this ride so memorable. Despite sometimes facing a wall of water, we always felt in control and hearing Jackson hooting and hollering like a kid gave the assurance and reminder that this is 100% fun adrenaline. The river water was cool and refreshing, not shockingly cold in July and the levels were high so we had a good time. We did stop half way down for a lunch which consisted of either meat/cheese sandwiches or PB sandwiches, potato salad, a pasta salad, watermelon, chips & salsa, and a desert. It was good and sustained everyone. The second half of the day the river was even better than the first half. At the end, we got picked up by the bus with an even shorter ride back to AOTG. They provided a couple coolers of ice cold water, soda, and gatorade for the ride back. Once back we showered, changed and checked out the photos of our trip. This was an 11 out of 10 experience for my family and like I said, we are already planning on coming back for a 2 day trip.

Partly because there were no four seasons in the area (mostly joking) but also because we were in WeSt vIrGiNiA and wanted to get in touch with NaTuRe we decided to go outside of our cocmfort zone and picked some closer to nature options. This was the second. We went with Kaymoor at Adventures on the Gorge. Thjey have the full scale between literal camping and hotel-like, I believe we chose the most hotel-like option. I wanted to do the glamping but there were none available about a month before our trip when I finally got my shit together to book shit. Check in was super easy. We were given a key and a treasure map of how to get to our "cabin" which was easy to drive to. It is a legit cabin in the woods but will all amenities one would expect staying in the a hotel. Great bathroom and shower with a ton of towels, bedroom and separate lounge room that included a mini fridge. TV, wifi, climate control. There was even a cute little porch with chairs in the literal woods. It is so cool. AC worked great. The shower was great. They provided more towels than I'm used to getting at hotels. The bed was SUPER COMFY. I literally don't have enough good things to say about this place. Such a good choice.

Being off the beaten path, it's easy to forget about life in the "real world." It was so quiet and peaceful; you only hear the sounds and see the sights of nature that have been lost in far too many places. I stayed in the Farmhouse Inn, the main house of the resort. It was clean, tastefully designed and well-furnished. I was the only one staying in this space, so again, it was very quiet. I spent a few hours outside in the evening chatting with a few other guests who were staying on the grounds. We sat out on the patio area during this time, and even decided to have our dinner there, as the weather was beautiful. While we ate, several deer payed a visit to the grounds to get dinner for themselves. Speaking of dinner, it was fantastic. I had a fresh salad, that I can only assume came from the organic garden on the grounds. Additionally, I had a vegetable lasagna and finished my meal with some delicious apple cake. Since I was leaving early the next morning for work, a breakfast basket was prepared for me with a variety of baked goods, orange juice, fruit, and a serving of the best baked oatmeal I ever had. Gail and Gary, the owners, were fantastic as well. They were extremely helpful from booking through my checkout. There were several emails sent to me prior to my visit with all the directions and information I needed to know for my arrival. Since I was arriving during their off hours, they prepared a binder for me that got me to my room and settled in until we had a chance to meet later in the evening. If you are interested in connecting with the outside world during your stay, cell service is spotty. I was told that only some cell service work there. However, there is a public phone that anyone can access if needed at no cost. In addition, the Farmhouse Inn has wifi. I don't believe this is true for all the outer houses. But since you come by the Farmhouse for meals, and any other time you want to, it shouldn't be an inconvenience. Overall, I have absolutely no complaints. I would HIGHLY reccomend this place if you're in the area.

When I saw there was a restaurant in the Mountain Creek Lodge at Pipestem State Park, I decided to plan a birthday surprise for my husband. I booked a room and then made a reservation for the restaurant by leaving my name, date, time as instructed by voicemail. We went over to "Appalachian Cuisine Restaurant" at 6:30 last Thursday evening after we had ridden the tram and settled in our room. They could not find our reservation and said they had phone problems. We were told to go over to a couch to wait, while they checked to see if we could eat there. We saw empty tables. A few minutes later we were shown to a table and felt like they were doing us a favor. Destiny was our server and was the highlight of our evening. We looked at a menu. I asked if bread came with our meal and since it didn't, we ordered a basket of biscuits as a starter ($7). The biscuits were not warm, which I would have expected from a fine dining place. The menu had about 10 choices to select from, but most had unusual side items. Fried green tomatoes were an entree, as was crawdad tails, duck, etc. Some were served with grits. The week before the menu had French onion soup as well as ribeye steaks. But not this week. We settled on prime rib, thinking this would be good as the sides were mashed potatoes and vegetables. The queen cut was $34 and the king cut was $43. The king cut was almost raw. My husband had to chew up small pieces and swallow them whole, but said it was moist and had flavor. Mine was overcooked and dry. It was very tough and I even choked on it. The prime rib didn't even look like prime rib. Our meals were not editable. I am surprised that the chef did not notice the prime rib before it came out to us, but I heard later that a line cook prepared the prime rib. We did not say anything to our server, as she shared it was her birthday and staff had arranged for us to eat. Destiny did arrange for a free dessert and the apple crisp was good. I felt like this restaurant doesn't cater to people in their 70s with their unique menu, and the prices were too high for the quality of food we ordered. There was a set menu. The ambiance was nice, but the food was horrible! I will not recommend anyone eat here, unless changes are made. Earlier in October, one review warned people about the bad prime rib entree. I had hoped that was a wrong observation. We are retired, but I wanted to splurge for a 76th birthday. Final bill $87. With lodging $147 (with senior discount) plus the meal, this was a very expensive evening. We drove from 2 hours away. Perhaps the main lodge had better choices but we stayed near the restaurant. We do not drive at night.

Loading and unloading were very organized, and Gary, our bus driver, was absolutely great. We were pleasantly surprised to find they had a little snack-style breakfast available before we loaded, although we didn't know about it until right before we left. Lunch was probably the biggest disappointment, mostly because we didn't stop until we were almost finished with the trip. We also weren't sure when we would be stopping, so we didn't have water with us for quite a while... we were definitely the last rafting company to stop for lunch, the moral was getting low. Even our guide mentioned something about not knowing when we would stop. Our guide seemed fairly new, but the river wasn't overly intense, and we never felt truly unsafe. There were a couple of moments that made us a little nervous, but overall the rafting itself was SO much fun. One thing that definitely affected the experience was some of the other guests. Unfortunately, you can't control people's manners, and there were a few who were pretty rude and inconsiderate, especially at lunch. It was supposed to be ladies first, but we watched people cut the line and take huge amounts of food for themselves and their husbands. It was honestly pretty frustrating to watch and took a little of the fun out of that part of the day. That said, we had a blast and would absolutely recommend giving it a try! The staff was kind, the organization was good, and being out on the river was an awesome experience. A few small improvements with communication around food, water, and lunch would make an already great day even better.
