My favorite kind of antique store, where there are a variety of things from mostly the mid-19th to mid-20th century, just happily being old at reasonable prices. It's big (two floors open, hints that sometimes there's a third floor). It's arranged so that a person can browse comfortably -- aisles are logical and not too tight. Not super-precious, but not junk. Not heavily mid-century modern, not heavily country. One of the downstairs vendors looks to be buying dollhouse miniatures at estate sales, so if that's your thing, the prices aren't cheap but the selection is interesting. read more

I have mixed feelings about this place. The store was awesome in terms of antiques, its a combination of used trash from China and prized treasures so you do need to hunt. But the staff were some of the bitchiest people I have ever met. I would highly recommend visiting this store, but really think twice (upon a time) about buying anything. All three employees I met snapped rudely and inappropriately at me at some point while I was browsing. At the point in which I purchased a $250 rug because I was madly in love with it, one of the employees apologize for being rude, but one out of three apologizes is not very good. :( *also that rug was way overpriced read more

This is one of those places that you have to take for what it is. It's a selection of random stuff, most of which is probably in your grandma's basement. But there's merit to that. Costume party? Check out all that jewelry! Redecorating your apartment and want kitsch? Check out the random salt and pepper shakers or plates, cups and kitchen accoutrements. My favorite part of Twice Upon A Time, though, is the vinyl. You'll find some gems waiting in the bins and so far everything we've purchased has been in good condition. As a music lover there are some albums I want in my collection but don't want to pay a premium for on Amazon. Garage sales can be tricky because records are often stored poorly. Twice Upon A Time is a great antique and consignment store located in the heart of Brattleboro. Every time I come into the store I get lost for hours and spend a ton of money. This store has so many items in it, but I have never felt as if it were overwhelming. The staff does a great job of organizing the goods. The last time I came into the store with my partner we spend a lot of time looking at their extensive jewelry section as well as their furniture. The items that they have in the store are incredible and I have found some unique trinkets at this location. The only critique I have is that the prices on their good tend to be pretty high, so be prepared to barter. At times the staff is willing to work with you on a price, but at times they are rigid. Overall though, I would say that if you are in the Brattleboro area then you need to stop into this store. Just plan to spend a bit of time in here. read more

Twice Upon a Time, there was a city girl who traveled to the country for a little R&R and stumbled upon a veritable treasure trove of vintage dresses, party frocks and ladylike accoutrements...There were mink stoles to flaunt, demure hats and gloves to don, and chic handbags to carry. Lace, chiffon, tulle, wool and everything in between! From the tiniest waist to ladies' size 8 (or greater), there was an astonishing selection from decades of old. The prices were generally fair, although there were a few stained pieces here and there... Pick and choose wisely, as the shop offers a 10% discount for cash and carry! (Plastic is accepted, but not with a discount). This tale does end happily as the city girl ended up with an armload of dresses as well as a few eyecatching knick-knacks...Success! read more

I don't go to this place because whenever I go I will buy stuff that I won't really need. So instead I'll tell you to go. They have a really good collection of trinkets and Stuff You Don't Really Need. The place is kind of organized but prepare to spend a lot of time digging through stuff. They have some really nice clothing upstairs. They are usually kind of pricey but worth it if you can find a deal. The furniture, however, is way expensive. However I guess selling overpriced artsy things to tourists is kind of how the Brattleboro economy works, so I can't complaint. read more

I went into Twice Upon A Time with my parents this past weekend and we spent a good hour just browsing all the fun antiques. What I love about this particular consignment shop is all the different little "cubby's" that are rented out to individuals. Some people's lives are in these cubby's - with various pieces of really unique stuff - pictures, china, jewelery, knick-knacks, old milk bottles, lamps, etc. I mean, you want to find it, they have got it! I stumbled upon a beautiful 1940's table and chairs - which someone very lovingly refurbished and put on sale for $150 bucks. If I had need of a new table, I would have purchased it in a heartbeat. Another fun fact: they participate in the Friday Night Gallery Walks in Brattleboro (the first Friday of every month, local shops offer special 'gallery walk' events to draw in customers)...they used to (and hope they still do!) have fashion shows where people (mainly high-schoolers - as I used to do this myself back in the day!!!) get to don the vintage clothing and strut their stuff to the victrola. First of all, I have never been in a store like this, where it was almost like an indoor mini-flea market in that there were booths that people rent out to consign their goods. Do you know what this does? This makes for an AMAZING selection. I could have spent hours in this store but unfortunately the man was with me. The pricing was different depending on the booth but I found most things to be pretty reasonable. Goods range from vintage clothes, housewares, books, trinkets, memorabilia, jewelry and so much more. The man and I ended up with some books, a couple figurines, a rad woven purse (for me of course) and a jar of awesome (which was a $10 canning jar filled to the brim with all sorts of costume jewelry and trinkets)... all in all, next time I am in the area, I will be going back. read more

This place is great! It's antique-consignment setup, so it's like going into dozens of tiny shops all in one. And this store is huge, with three levels. The basement is all furniture that I forced myself not to be interested in, because I knew I couldn't buy anything that large. I'm no antiques wizard so I have no idea about the authenticity of the stuff being sold, but it was all fun to look at. My favorite antique/consignment shop I've been to hands down. I try to visit Brattleboro a few times a year and always make sure I stop here. They have 3 floors and offer a wide range of antique everything from furniture to paintings to instruments (including vintage clothes, bags, shoes, and accessories.) Plenty of awesome and unique finds here....I found a real alligator head once. I bought this vintage red jacket on sale for $25...beautiful and a great price! Twice Upon A Time is a little over whelming when you first walk in. They have a huge selection of small items. (If your looking for something, you need to look for it.) The store has 3 levels. Top floor contains clothes and some furniture. Middle floor (main floor) is more your small trinkets and random items, and the bottom floor is antique furniture. Twice Upon a Time is truly a vintage-lover's dream come true! I'm originally from Stamford, CT, and antique shops there are outrageously overpriced (basically any big city or highly populated area in the US is)! We're not talking (cheap) flea market prices here at Twice Upon a Time. But since there really isn't a lot of "junk" in Twice Upon a Time, you can't expect dirt cheap prices. Their prices are reasonable for what you're getting! For example, I've picked up lots of really nice framed paintings and prints for less than $20 each, which I would expect to run into the $60+ range in NYC or even Boston. They also usually have a great selection of vintage women's clothing and accessories. I found a delightful 1960's dress today that I picked up and expected it to be really expensive. Nope, it was only $35. The same dress would be in the hundreds in NYC! I can picture vintage stores in NYC such as What Comes Around Goes Around selling that same dress for $350+! Twice Upon A Time's handbag selection is usually to-die-for. I'm a vintage handbag lover, and I've seen nothing but beautiful handbags in excellent clean condition there at VERY reasonable prices (picked one up today for $20). They also have a very nice selection of vintage women's hats from the 1940's-1970's. I think I'll go back this weekend and pick up this lam turban-style hat that I saw today! What the place seems to have tons of is knick-knacks. So if you love vintage treasures for around the home, this will be your heaven. There's tons of furniture too. This tends to be more expensive, but usually in very good shape! All I have left to say is that if you're looking for a great antique shop, look no further than this place! read more

I hesitate to post a negative review of a locally owned shop, but time and time again I am unimpressed with this place. Perhaps for little trinkets it might work, but their furniture prices are sky-high and that's why inventory sits for months and months gathering dust. The place is horribly disorganized and the owner can be heard griping loudly on the phone. I understand that they focus on estate sales and auctions for the big pieces, but I feel that their pricepoints show how out of touch with the local market they are. Worse still, when I finally did buckle down and buy a lamp there I loved it didn't work (when it had been labelled and priced as if it did) and I had to rewire it myself. Overall I think you're better off hunting for treasures at tag sales or heading to one of the area auctions yourself and spare yourself the insane markup. read more
