Not the best in town, but I love it anyway. Very nice people. I spent an hour there so that speaks for itself. Go there.

Today I was driving to Boston from Western Mass. I realized that I was very hungry and decided to…read morestop at Freight House for a late lunch (hoping to take it to go so as not to prolong the drive). To make a long story short, they were out of my first choice on the menu. As I was considering what else to order, the owner came up from behind and made a snide comment and then walked away. I was surprised, especially since in past years, Freight House was a friendly place to stop. I left right away and was upset in the car. Suggestion 1: let people know when they sit down at the counter if you are out of menu items. Suggestion 2: don't be rude to your customers. Wow, can't believe that I actually have to "suggest" that.

The beauty of Western Mass is summed up in the view of the Connecticut River from the bridge, especially during foliage season. But I digress, back to the Freight House, my favored stop on my tours. It's a worn place, antiques lining its broad porch and spilling over into the neighboring area with cement and stone yard ornaments. Don't be deterred! Inside you'll find rooms stuffed with antique brick-a-brac, but make your way to a stool at the food counter. Service is prompt and personable - well, of course, there's only a handful of stools. The prices are fair, and I love this unassuming oasis and the folks that work here, so I tip generously. I've sampled most of the menu items, and always been satisfied. But the hidden gems are the homemade pies. I love a good pie, and most pies don't measure up. I look for a great crust, flakey on top and bottom. Then I want a good filling, full of authentic flavor, not cloyingly sweet, or runny, or gelatinous. Tough to find? Yup! Found it here, at Freight House, every time. Great pie (and food), a cup of coffee, and I'm off to the French King bridge, the Quabbin, and the open road.
