We've been to Tuyas four or five times now and I think it is one of the best restaurants in Humboldt County. We love the los tazas appetizer - heart of romaine lettuce leaves stuffed with pollo en mole poblano, corn pico de gallo, avocado, and queso fresco. The street tacos are a favorite - Tuyas does some of the best chile verde and el pastor I've had anywhere. Excellent housemade blue and yellow corn tortillas, and killer sangria as well. Who knew you could get delicious, incredibly authentic Mexican food in Ferndale?!?! I grew up in a Mexican household and I know good Mexican food. This place is the real deal. I spoke quite a bit with the owner and asked if I could have a taste of the mole, verde and guajillo sauces. If you like mole, you won't be disappointed. The other sauces were spot on. They make the corn tortillas from scratch in-house and they also use them to make chips. One member of our party ordered a chile relleno and she said it was the best she'd had in a long while. I ordered a chicken quesadilla which was fabulous. It was basically a chicken taco salad in a tortilla filled with lots of guacamole and sour cream. But once in a blue moon a business just knocks your socks off and then when you are sitting there fat and happy, smug in your decision to pick the place out, they come at you punching with desert no less! We go to a lot of Buddhist restaurants in the US and outside the US and it irks me that at a vegan restaurant so many Buddhist establishments then decide to offer "Vegan Flann!" And yet when the beauties at Tuyas brought out a lit candle and a dish of Flann and sing "happy birthday" well one can not say "...but I don't like Flann" And here I sit a convert. On the evening that my husband and I popped in to try this place out, there appeared to only be one person waiting and bussing tables, so service was very slow. I appreciated that our server acknowledged the wait, and was very attentive. We got our drinks fairly quickly and were able to munch on the free chips and salsa while we waited for our meals. The fresh white walls gave a crisp and clean feel to the space. I have seen different fun events advertised online for this place, such as trivia nights. The margarita I ordered was served to me in a pint glass, which I loved. It was delicious! My husband ordered the chicken mole, and it was very flavorful and had some bite to it. I ordered a taco salad with carne asada, but my dinner was somewhat lackluster, and tasted fairly bland. I definitely enjoyed the atmosphere, and I would love to try this place again, but I will definitely choose a different dish next time. read more

Wonderful small town atmosphere with clean modern art and decor. Food was fantastic. If you're hungry have a Chimichanga they are big and delicious. The Chicken Mole is divine, Nachos would be a great meal, the homemade chips are individually loaded with goodness. Fun wine selection, Cider, beer, and a lavender lemonade that makes a wonderful spritzer of sorts. They're super busy from 5-7 so earlier or later. Let's start with the food... The chips and salsa were awesome! Loved the thick style chips and the flavors in the salsa were refreshing. We ordered chicken fajitas, shrimp fajitas, and chicken tamales. All the food was fresh and cooked perfectly. The chicken was tender and the shrimp were just right. The peppers and onions added a beautiful array of color and flavor. It was obvious that the corn tortillas were homemade. The were soft and piping hot. The tamales were made with a great ratio of masa and chicken. There always nothing dry about it! The verde sauce on top had a nice bite, but not so spicy that it ruined the flavor. Rice and beans accompanied each dish and both were delicious! The rice was fluffy and both the whole and refried beans were seasoned very well. Nothing was overly salty. Lastly, the service was fantastic and the space was clean and inviting. Definitely a place I'd recommend, and will revisit if I am in the area!! read more

We took a side trip to Ferndale and by chance parked in front of Tuyas. Glad we did! We only had two dishes but both were excellent! Las Tazas and 2 fish tacos, one white corn tortilla and one blue corn. Probably the best fish tacos I ever had. The Las Tazas were like a taco but with the ingredients in romaine leaf shells. I can't comment on the quality of the food because we didn't get a chance to eat there. The service was terrible. The girls that "greeted" us at the door definitely do not carry the charm that the rest of the town holds. The hostess and waitress treated us as a nuisance because they had no seating available. One of my favorite places to eat in Ferndale! They make the best food. My sister and I also love the staff.

Last evening, we arrived for our reservation to see our little two-top table in a niche at the front of the restaurant with a 'reserved' sign on it. I thought that was a nice touch. We were seated and given a wire cone-basket of homemade yellow corn tortilla chips and a small bowl of salsa. The chips were great, and the salsa was perfectly seasoned. My wife ordered the garlic camarones, and I had the spicy camarones. The dish came with three tortillas, beans, and rice. My wife ordered a side of guacamole and made little shrimp burritos, and she was super pleased with the food! I asked them to make my spicy shrimp 'extra spicy', and they certainly did, with lots of smokey chipotles in the gravy. Super good! The service was excellent, the ambience was wonderful; soft Mexican music playing in the background, and abstract art on the walls. Both of us very much enjoyed ourselves, and will definitely be back. Oh, and they participate in the NCJ SmartCard program, which gave us a 35% discount on the entire bill! Bonus! Thank you, Tuyas! On Halloween night at 8:05 my husband and I walked in to this restaurant for the 1st time. Immediately we were approached by a server who informed us that the kitchen had already closed. We were aware of the fact that they closed at 8:30, not sure why the kitchen closed 30 minutes early. As no excuse or reason was offered. As we walked to the car the server asked us if we had another place to go? I think his intention was good but to say that was insulting as we're leaving Ferndale at 8 o'clock at night still hungry, is an understatement. We drove from Eureka to try this new restaurant. We will definitely not make that drive again. And from the reviews I read about the food it's probably a good thing. My grilled Salmon was pretty good! Looked smaller as compared to other places. If you are too hungry and didn't order an appetiser, I'd recommend a salad to go with it.
