I'm surprised their average star rating is so low! We had a nice experience here recently. We stopped in for a bit of breakfast and to get some bread for the week + a birthday dessert. They have quite a bit of baked goods out, especially bread loaves, for folks to wrap up and take to the counter to buy. We picked out a white bread loaf and browsed the pies. We came closer to noon, so the baked goods like croissants and scones were pretty picked over and not labeled - the main tricky part of picking out what to have. My brother trapped what he guessed was a savory scone. I opted for a chocolate mousse cake from the patisserie display. I also ordered a sausage lentil soup. Counter service was to-the-point but efficient. We found a spot to sit easily - quite a bit of seating here plus a communal table too. I LOVED the soup! So delicious. My brother enjoyed his scone as well. I am dying to try their other soups now! read more

What a great coffee spot! Not only do they have coffee, but they have soups, pastries, bread, and breakfast. I had one of the specials, a tiramisu latte. I could taste the tiramisu flavor and it was not overly sweet. We each had a pumpkin cake pop. Service was friendly and fast. Despite our coming in a Sunday, the cafe was quiet. Pasties were dry and garbage. The lady making coffee this morning was rude to her employee and to me because I ordered a half of pump of vanilla. She berated him and told him it's a stupid order and not to take orders like that while I was standing there. I've been drinking coffee for 40 years and never had a problem getting half a pump of vanilla, I know Edina wouldn't know coffee if it slapped them in the face but it's not rocket science that I just want a little hint of vanilla in there. There are other employees that are great but I'm guessing this lady treats them poorly, hopefully she is not in charge. I won't be back and will be recommending my network to avoid. read more

Still mediocre baked goods at premium prices. There are so many good bakeries in the cities that, unless you're looking for a greasy breakfast, I'd skip this one. Cafe ceres is right next door and is the same price or cheaper while the quality is miles better. Service at Turtle Bread is about what you'd expect from a place run by high school kids. Not bad but apathetic at best. It's a neighborhood place that's riding that Linden Hills price train and relying on older regulars. For a better food at a cheaper price go to Cafe Ceres, Jones Coffee, France 44, or even the Wedge Coop. read more

Turtle Bread is a very charming cafe with counter order service. There are plenty of options available here that it is almost overwhelming. I settled with the pumpkin bar, daily quiche and split a key lime pie. I thought the desserts were the stars of the show. The pumpkin bar was light even with the cream cheese frosting and the cinnamon dusting added a perfect extra touch. The key lime pie was also light, sweet, and just the right amount of tart you'd expect from the citrus! On the other hand, the quiche was good. Very fluffy, well cooked, and the crust was tasty. However, the overall flavor was pretty bland. The same goes for the taste of chicken and mushroom soup that I had. The soup was perfectly creamy, and had great ingredients but there wasn't much spice or seasoning in it. Still a good meal, but would prefer more flavor in the dishes. One thing to note is that the restrooms are downstairs, so it may not be accessible to all customers. read more

Stopped by on a Sunday for breakfast! They had a lot of baked goods available. Unsure I love the "buffet" style in which they had the baked goods set up, it was in a busy area and I felt uncertain about people just being able to grab whatever pastry they wanted. So...I passed on the baked goods and opted for a breakfast sandwich. The sandwich came with a variety of meat choices, and I went with sausage assuming that it would be a sausage patty. Nope, they just put two whole sausage links on the sandwich. So I just took them out and ate them separate since it was too hard to eat with them in the sandwich. I guess my bad for not asking but...I can't say I've ever seen a sandwich done that way before lol. Additionally, the sandwich came with breakfast potatoes. However, I found they weren't seasoned and were a little cold... I love a potato regardless but they didn't blow me away or anything. I really love the inside of turtle bread. Lots of seating, super cute decor, very cozy, great location. I've also had their food before and really liked it, but this breakfast sandwich was a bit of a bummer. It needed more seasoning or a sauce or something... I don't think I'd get it again, but like I said, I know I've enjoyed their breakfast food in the past so maybe I just need to try something else. read more

Turtle bread gets a lot of mixed reviews and I think part of that is simply because it doesn't fit neatly into a specific category. Is it a bakery, a restaurant, a deli, a coffee shop? Depending on your mood it can be any of those. The bakery items are all top notch and serve as the basis of several of the restaurant items. While I understand the desire to showcase the bread, buns, etc., I would also prefer a bit more flavor in what's between the bread. But I still like coming here. I like the vibe, the simple food and always grab something to bring home for later. Not pictured was my daughter's French toast. Normally a great option here. But today the custard was not fully cooked and she didn't appreciate the imitation syrup. read more

I've had this on my list for a while and decided to stop in today. My review in two sentences.. The charm of the place is off the charts, otherwise the food is a little bland and pricey. I'd give it a weak 3/5. Parking is a little tricky because I don't think they have a dedicated lot, but there may have been one across the street that I didn't see. We parked in front of a house across the way. It's pretty much all free street parking and feels a little chaotic. I love the little street it's on, it feels quaint and romantic. If you wanna romanticize your life... try it out. Turtle Bread almost looks like a place out of a book or tv show and warms your heart when you step in. The almost-rickety, well loved wood and tile interior vibe always tugs at my heartstrings. There are two rooms you can sit in (booths or chair options) and the bathrooms are located down stairs -- I did not see an accessible option to get to the restroom. The only menus available on the wall that I could see were drink menus and there were tons of bakery and cheese items that you could help yourself to. Their chilled bakery case was small but impressive. To get a food menu, you need to go up to the register where they have a few that are letter size and laminated. Turtle Bread has a breakfast and lunch menu. I didn't look too hard at it and ordered an apple bacon omelette, and my husband ordered the breakfast burrito. We got 2 cold press coffees and an apple juice. Our total was $45. Service was neutral. Nobody was friendly but nobody was mean. The condiments and anything you might need for coffee or cafe drinks are spread out by the registers and there's a pretty good selection of everything. Ketchup, sriracha, franks red hot, simple syrup, half and half, any kind of sugar you might want, a huge water dispenser, takeaway boxes and cups, silverware, straws, classic ceramic diner mugs.. I'm sure I'm forgetting something. Nice big spread. Our food didn't take long and was brought out to us. It looked really impressive! The potatoes were my favorite part of the meal. Like, wow. I will be googling how to make potatoes like that. Otherwise, the food was pretty bland. It had no seasoning whatsoever, which was disappointing for a $14 omelette. I grabbed some ketchup, sriracha, salt, and pepper, and that helped a bit but.. man. Disappointing. On the other hand, if you don't like your food seasoned for tummy issues or otherwise, this spot could be your new jam. OH I'm glad I mentioned jam, because the bread and jam were also very good. So my favorite parts of the meal were the buttery toasty bread, tart jam, and crispy salted potatoes. Yum. One more thing was that after I had already drank 3 cups of water I noticed that there was some dirt or bug looking sediment in the bottom of the cup. Oooooops. That put an end to my drinking. I liked that there were a few other local businesses and community classes listed inside, it feels like they care about the community. I'll come back if I feel like getting some fancy cheese, bread, or olive oil, but otherwise this one is falling off my radar. This place is a neighborhood gem! very charming with delicious items. I met a friend for coffee and then ended up staying through lunch. I recommend a baked good with your coffee- we split a chocolate chip cookie and it was scrumptious. I am a big fan of soup so this place does not disappoint. I worked at this location about 20 and 25 years ago (for short times). The quality of food has gone down. My quiche was soggy, overheated in a microwave, and deflated. The chocolate croissants have less chocolate and are drier than they used to be. The tomato basil soup is still good. It's always been pricey but I don't think it's worth the price anymore. Tuna Melt was not much of a melt, so much as a luke warm attempt at a sandwhich. My brother in christ, you didn't even toast both sides of the bread slices and you offered a mere slice of american kraft cheese for the 'melt' section of your to-do list. You checked off the boxes like a middle schooler going through their first EOG. "Yeah that looks good enough." 14 dollars would have been better put towards my usual pack of Marlboro Reds, at least I'm glad these are killing me. read more

We had breakfast for the first time last week at Turtle Bread. I had their Denver omelette and Dick had the blueberry pancakes. The omelet was good and the bread & potatoes were delicious. Dick said the pancakes were okay. They have shelving to purchase their bread and baked goods which look amazing. The place is in a neighborhood so street parking is very easy. Turtle Bread is very clean and spacious. We prefer to be waited on as opposed to placing an order at the counter but they do deliver your food to your table, along with the silverware. They have a table with coffee, jelly, hot sauce, etc., to serve yourself and also a station for dispensing your dirty dishes. I'm glad we tried it. I give it three stars only because it is not a full service restaurant and is more like a bakery. read more

We haven't been here for sometime and couldn't be more disappointed with today's lunch. I saw a "Kitchen Staff Wanted" sign has been posted and hopefully whomever takes the job will be better trained than the cook who prepared our food today. I ordered the Cheesesteak sandwich. It arrived quickly and had little in common with what is generally considered to be a Cheesesteak sandwich. While the menu stated it was made with a "Soft Baguette," mine was made with 2 slices of bread (see photo). The onions? Instead of caramelized (or even heated) they were plopped at room temperature on top of the meat which was also sliced way too thick for use on a cheesesteak. Of course any decent cheesesteak sandwich also includes at least two "colors" of peppers which have been cooked with the onions. Not at Turtle Bread. Mine came with red peppers only and were absolutely COLD. Note to the operator: If you're not interested in serving a Cheesesteak sandwich that even resembles a cheesesteak sandwich, take it off the menu. Oh yeah...my dining partner's Greek Romaine Salad with chicken. The chicken was dry and tasteless. When we advised the staff there was no Feta cheese on the salad, we were told that, "you didn't ask for it." The menu clearly states Feta Cheese is a standard ingredient on the salad. A staff member eventually delivered a small bowl of what was supposed to be on the salad. Clearly, Turtle Bread Company wins the "Worst Performance After the Covid Reopening" award. They should take a hint from the scores of locally owned/operated restaurants that have risen to the occasion and provided a good experience. Instead, they were a $38 lunch mistake. It's designed to be a cozy bakery with ample seating both indoors and out. You'll have to get there early if you want to snag a spot outside because those seats go quickly. So far I've been impressed with every dish I've had here. My standout favorites have been the Apple and bacon omelette and salmon egg hash. Don't forget the pastry items. By far my favorite artisan bakery in the twin cities with a great variety of hearty breads and tasty pastries. I'm particularly found of the sourdough bread as well as the almond flavored breakfast pastry shaped like a pretzel (don't even know what it's called by you will recognize it by sight). I also find myself combing through the cheese case and like that they sell small chunks and spreads that are just enough for two. If you grab some bread and cheese you can head over to lake Harriet band shell for a small picnic and a great afternoon. Prices are decent and the atmosphere is lively yet peaceful on a Sunday morning with lots of young families. There's a modest parking lot directly across the street from the store if you can't find a place on the street. read more

On a warm May morning sitting outside for breakfast was a perfect setting. Ordered the salmon scramble with salad at the counter and they brought it out to me fairly quickly. The coffee was hot and tasty and self refillable. The salmon scramble was okay but nothing special for a rather pricey breakfast. The salad and accompanying bread were both tasty. The scramble itself was rather flavorless and there were no salt and pepper shakers outside. I blame myself for not going inside for the salt and pepper as it would have helped this bland dish. One of my fellow diners also commented on the blandness of her entree. I would go back for bread, as they had an extensive good looking variety. Their food at the Longfellow location is so bad I have thrown away the food the few times I've tried it. Very over-priced for what you get.
