CCC Shooting Complex - Shooting at the 500 yard range during a 3-Gun Match

    CCC Shooting Complex

Visited my parents this past weekend for July 4th so I wanted to check out a range I heard about…read morenear College Station. All of the other rifle ranges I've been to in the North Houston area have been absolutely dreadful so I was hoping for a change of pace. The Cawthon Cartridge Club (CCC) is located near Navasota, TX and about 20 miles from Aggieland. The range is on a huge swath of land, I reckon about +800 acres. They have a 200 yard range, numerous uncovered tactical bays with just a few steel targets, several pistol bays and a 5-stand area for shotgun. The entire area (including berms) was covered in a lush green grass that was freshly mowed. The roads were crushed limestone. The owner roves the grounds in a John Deere Gator UTV but other than that there were no Range Safety Officers. I was only interested in shooting long distance so proceeded to the rifle range. Newcomers are restricted to 500 yards and below until they quality with the owner. There were steel hanger targets every 50 yards and at the 500 yard line, there were about 8 different steel targets of varying sizes. The grass was very neatly trimmed and gently sloped downward. Beyond the 500 yard line were targets every 100 yards until 1200. The shooting area was up on a hill with a nice metal shade structure. There were some rickety old benches but I chose to shoot prone. There was a nice breeze blowing into our faces which really helped to beat the brutal heat and humidity. Out beyond the 1200 yard target was a farmer working a field in his tractor. The owner advised us of this beforehand and asked us to hold fire until he was out of sight. This was annoying as the farmer was constantly behind the target area; fortunately I had two people with me, one to spot my targets and the other to keep an eye on the farmer. Hopefully this is not a regular occurrence. I've never shot at a range this nice before. They didn't have as many steel targets as ETTS in Waxahachie but the grounds were much nicer. Membership is $750/yr but they let me pay only for the remainder of 2016. Guests are $25 each and you are normally restricted to two.

There's a metal folding chair and a bench that's too high for it at the 100 so I just went prone instead. So if you're not a member don't expect much. Otherwise, I understand there's some decent long shots to be had there with covered shelters and such. I don't recall the membership dues but it's several hundred dollars.

It's a bit of a drive if you live in the Houston area, but I imagine you can't really do this kind of shooting in the city limits. The reviews are all over the place for this establishment, but this review is based on my visit and the experience we had. We arrived around 10 on a Saturday and were some of the first customers in. It is located right off a main road and has plenty of parking. Now, if you plan on shooting clay or taking advantage of some of their outdoor ranges, you will need to drive on some unpaved terrain, so plan accordingly. My sedan made it fine, but we had to leave some of our friends sports cars in the lot. Customer service was good. I personally paid for just shotgun usage which is per gun/shooter. If you want to do range or steel targets, there are additional charges. We were allowed to bring our own clays, guns and ammo. I like the set pricing and I like that their is no time limit. That being said, if you leave, time is up. Once we were all paid up, a member of their staff lead our convoy of vehicles to some land out back. It was an open field with the target throwers set up. I am a beginner shooter even though I own my own shotgun, but my friends are avid shooters. Even for a beginner, I feel like the equipment would be easy to use. We got all our guns ready and waited for everyone to arrive. The employee who brought us out does park off to the side and supervise from a distance. Only once did he have to come out and have us take a break as he had employees doing work out in the distance. Make sure you are shooting with the right ammo for what you are doing. This was my first time skeet shooting and I had a blast. We went through quite a bit of ammo and clays and everyone enjoyed myself. I left before the fellas went to another range, but no complaints from them in the other ranges either. My experience was a good one here. I felt safe and the employees here were very friendly and willing to help. I can see myself coming back!

If your looking to spend a day at this range for long or short distance accuracy its not going to happen. Rules are clearly posted and all of the rules make sense. Safety first! Range officer present was friendly and was safety oriented. Some ladies kind of sneaked in the side of the 25 yd pistol range and did not check in with the range officer (one of their posted rules). Range officer gave the all clear and while I was about 40 yards down range, I heard a shot ring out to my right (gulp!). Turns out the ladies paid no attention to the range officer's "Cease fire!" command. Boy, did he get them straightened out right away! My kind of range officer. Guy working inside the shop was also friendly. I had an issue with my AR 15 bolt and he was kind enough to assist me in dealing with the issue and we were able to correct it so my shooting session was not ruined. But, best of all was the QoC. QoC = Quality of Customers. Some shooting ranges seem to draw low life yahoos who are always trying to circumvent the rules. Plus, yahoos always make me nervous when they eyeball my gear as I go down range to post/adjust my targets. The customers I observed at this range were all responsible adults with top line equipment and were serious shooters shooting for accuracy. No rapid fire strings and no unsafe practices. I never felt my personal gear was in any jeopardy. Excellent Quality of Customers at this range this particular morning (a mid-week Tuesday; do you suppose the yahoos show up on Saturdays & Sundays?). I found their prices to be reasonable compared to the going prices of shooting ranges these days.

From reservations, to checking in, to lane usage, the whole journey was refreshingly smooth making for a very fun time. The facility was exceptionally clean, well staffed, and the displays of equipment were impressive. Upon entrance, I was immediately greeted by a bright and friendly woman who helped me get acquainted with the procedures. I was checked in by a delightful man named Tim. Tim had also helped me with my reservation and made sure, I was accommodated appropriately. Very professional. This was my first time at a gun range and my experience was limited, so I really appreciate how Tim understood my situation and included other staff members to help make sure I was comfortable with lane and weapons handling. A cool thing I learned, most of the staff is current or prior military. People who really know their trade and love what they do. I respect that. I was also introduced to a superb training instructor named Craig Terry. Craig helped refresh me on the fundamentals and guided me as I re-familiarized myself with the M15. Craig is observant and tuned into exactly the guidance I needed. Craig is respectful. His instruction and patience truly revitalized my confidence and gave me the best insight on what I needed to focus practicing on. I am very grateful to the time Craig gifted me. The lanes are comfortable, clean, and spacious. I didn't feel any hindrance about my surroundings and locking in was seamless. The target was easy to adjust and set nice and fast. The policies made sense and operations were a breeze. Ammo was decently priced and accurate to market value. All costs were very reasonable, especially for the atmosphere provided. I am impressed with the variety of weapons activities offered and particularly pleased with the variety of rentals available. I am beyond satisfied with what I paid for what I got. I had such a great time at Saddle River Range and I've been bragging about the place since. I already reserved two more sessions and I plan to bring a friend. I can see this becoming a weekly activity for me. Get this, they have a discount Happy Hour Monday - Thursday and free full-auto on Friday!

STOP LOOKING -- THIS IS YOUR NEW RANGE…read more Copendero Indoor Archery & Gun Range has been an absolute gem for our A Girl & A Gun Woodlands chapter. After less-than-stellar experiences elsewhere, finding a range that truly values its members has been refreshing. From day one, they've treated us like gold--welcoming, respectful, and consistently accommodating. The staff is outstanding. Their RSOs are attentive, safety-focused, and professional while still being friendly and approachable. Special shoutout to Michael and Colt, who are always excellent on the range. Angel at the coffee/snack bar is a delight, and Chris seems to be everywhere at once keeping things running smoothly. Gabe and Brandon have also gone above and beyond to support our group and make everyone feel welcome. The facility itself is impressive--clean, spacious, and beautifully designed. Great pistol lanes, a solid 100-yard rifle range, unique rental firearms, quality targets, a strong retail selection, and even an on-site gunsmith. They also have an indoor archery range, which adds another layer of fun and versatility. Online lane reservation ability is a plus. Another major advantage is the availability of multiple classroom spaces equipped with presentation technology, making it an excellent venue for training, safety courses, group meetings, and educational events. One feature I especially appreciate is that each lane has cameras that let you evaluate your target without constantly reeling it back in. It's efficient, modern, and makes practice sessions much smoother. Their ventilation system is excellent--a big deal at any indoor range--and clearly designed with shooter comfort and safety in mind. There's also a front coffee/snack bar open to everyone, which gives the whole place a welcoming clubhouse feel rather than a sterile retail vibe. One of the most distinctive touches is the décor, featuring taxidermy displays--many reportedly harvested by the owner's son with a bow, which is genuinely impressive. Upstairs is a separate business, but accessible to certain tier members and for events. A VIP lounge space that deserves mention all its own: cigars, drinks, TV, fireplace, pool table, and a great atmosphere to unwind after shooting. They also host creative events--date nights with chef-prepared meals, couples shooting activities, indoor steel challenges, and a calendar full of options for every skill level. They support veterans with discounts and are generous supporters of the Girl & A Gun ladies as well, which says a lot about the kind of business they are. Whether you're teaching your child to shoot safely, training seriously, or just enjoying a weekend range session, Copendero delivers. I get tremendous value from my membership and highly recommend them. As a group of experienced women shooters, we are proud and grateful to call Copendero our home range. First-class people, first-class facility.
