I have never experienced overcrowding at this range-as I have on some others- and appreciate the extended ranges for sighting in optics and dialing in that favorite rifle. Glad to see that the staff are uniformly knowledgeable without being overbearing. Also worthy of note is the fact that on my many visits the other shooters have been safety conscious and respectful of others' personal space-haven't had the dreaded unwanted Fudd or 'just turned 18' type telling you that you are doing it wrong or criticizing your gear. That changed with my visit to BTO, and boy was it an experience. My friend was in town visiting and had a flight back home that evening. I really had no good ideas on what we could do all day, and felt bad that we might end up spending his last day just hanging around my house. After all, it was a Monday and I live way up in the burbs, so choices were very limited. But then I came across the idea of a gun range, suggested it, and he was down. Truthfully, I was quite nervous about it. Not because I actually thought it was legitimately dangerous, but just because of the unknown. That nervousness started when we officially planned on visiting and slowly accelerated once we arrived, peaking before I took my first shot. Before we headed up to BTO, I called to confirm that we could just show up, rent a gun, buy bullets and shoot. Indeed we could. So we grabbed lunch and headed over. For a total newbie, I had no idea what to expect, but I did assume there would be an instructor helping us out every step of the way. It turned out, there was very little assistance and honestly, a shocking lack of oversight, considering I was yelling from the mountaintops that I'd never even touched a gun before. They didn't seem concerned enough to give us more than a quick overview and send us on our way. Fortunately, my friend had shot guns before, albeit many years ago, but at least he somewhat knew what he was doing. We declined to pay $75 per person for someone from the shop to stay with us and help the entire time. For those like me who are reading this as rookies, here's the biggest takeaway: the sound of these guns in the shooting bays is probably the loudest thing you will ever hear in your entire life. And this is with headphones on. I really never got used to how loud it was - it really was quite unnerving. Especially when I didn't know it was coming and someone in another bay started shooting. The kick back from the rifle we chose was very minimal. I always assumed that would be worse, but we purposely chose a gun where that wouldn't be an issue. It definitely feels insanely powerful. And it's not that easy to aim. I hit the paper with the targets with about 40-50% of my shots when it was only 25 yards away. One big takeaway from this experience is that anytime you see people in TV and movies using guns like it's no big deal, it's quite ridiculous. All in all, renting the bay for an hour and shooting about 150 bullets, our total was just under $200. I had absolutely no idea what to expect on the cost for this. If it had been $50 or $500, I wouldn't have been surprised, considering I had no frame of reference. Overall, it was a very unique experience that I won't ever forget. My only gripe is that the gun we used jammed up a lot, so we often had to stop, take the chamber out and un-jam the bullets. That could have been user-error on our part, or maybe the gun was just cheap, I'm not really sure.

The people who work there are awesome. If you have an issue with your shooting they jump thru hoops to help you. They have a good supply of merchandise for sale and help you pick out what will work for you. I took the LTC class with Felicia and she was great. Tara is awesome when it comes to training.

Visited my parents this past weekend for July 4th so I wanted to check out a range I heard about…read morenear College Station. All of the other rifle ranges I've been to in the North Houston area have been absolutely dreadful so I was hoping for a change of pace. The Cawthon Cartridge Club (CCC) is located near Navasota, TX and about 20 miles from Aggieland. The range is on a huge swath of land, I reckon about +800 acres. They have a 200 yard range, numerous uncovered tactical bays with just a few steel targets, several pistol bays and a 5-stand area for shotgun. The entire area (including berms) was covered in a lush green grass that was freshly mowed. The roads were crushed limestone. The owner roves the grounds in a John Deere Gator UTV but other than that there were no Range Safety Officers. I was only interested in shooting long distance so proceeded to the rifle range. Newcomers are restricted to 500 yards and below until they quality with the owner. There were steel hanger targets every 50 yards and at the 500 yard line, there were about 8 different steel targets of varying sizes. The grass was very neatly trimmed and gently sloped downward. Beyond the 500 yard line were targets every 100 yards until 1200. The shooting area was up on a hill with a nice metal shade structure. There were some rickety old benches but I chose to shoot prone. There was a nice breeze blowing into our faces which really helped to beat the brutal heat and humidity. Out beyond the 1200 yard target was a farmer working a field in his tractor. The owner advised us of this beforehand and asked us to hold fire until he was out of sight. This was annoying as the farmer was constantly behind the target area; fortunately I had two people with me, one to spot my targets and the other to keep an eye on the farmer. Hopefully this is not a regular occurrence. I've never shot at a range this nice before. They didn't have as many steel targets as ETTS in Waxahachie but the grounds were much nicer. Membership is $750/yr but they let me pay only for the remainder of 2016. Guests are $25 each and you are normally restricted to two.

Place is well kept. No green tip allowed. Not being a member meant I was only allowed on the 100…read morerange. There's a metal folding chair and a bench that's too high for it at the 100 so I just went prone instead. So if you're not a member don't expect much. Otherwise, I understand there's some decent long shots to be had there with covered shelters and such. I don't recall the membership dues but it's several hundred dollars.

I know the owner and his wife I have bought guns from them and done business here and I'll continue giving this establishment my business. There has been many changes at thunder over the last few years and I like the way it is now more quiet and peaceful it's not crowded also you do your own thing and no one will bother you as long as you're being safe and the following the rules. Keith and Emilio, who is the head RSO and supervisor are very professional and do not tolerate any nonsense. Operations run smoothly and very safe under their watch. both are very good salesman and I have bought plenty of ammunition as so do other customers. It's a big change from the past compared to when they had so many people working there and nobody knew what they were doing. They had many sketchy/jail birds working there just walking around going on a power trip and bossing people around also smoking in your face that's just unprofessional and so rude. also threatening to kick people out because they are half owners and going around yelling at others. The event that happened that occurred yesterday morning at around 9:50 before opening. as they were opening up an older gentleman who was just rude, sketchy and very suspicious claimed he worked there and he's an employee. He walking around with customers on the range and let them set up their firearms on the firing deck when there was no R.S.O. present and the range wasn't even open this was 10 minutes before they opened and the range opens at 10:00 AM. This is could lead to a fatal accident and it's very unsafe!! According to the elderly man claimed he was related to the owner and was an employee there and he spoke in a yelling manner and waving his cigarette around. I thought it was very unsafe for people to be walking around and setting up fire arms on the shooting decks and me and my wife weren't the only ones who witnessed it another customer witnessed it. That's when Emilio who is the main employee and R.S.O. walked in and handle the situation professionally and corrected everything and let the customers that what they did was unsafe and that they needed to check in, pay at the desk and wait for the R.S.O to escort them to the range. The customers acted very disrespectful and went psycho and try to gang up and come up to the RSO, but he told the angry customer to stand back and put his hand out as be told him to stand back. He told that they needed to leave the property and that police would be called if the situation got out of control and if there was no no respect. The angry customers and his family were very confrontational and threw a temper tantrum. Also the so-called employee whose name is Carlos because I the RSO he was so rude and horrible. Emilio corrected the situation like a professional like it needed to be in and told him he did was not right and very unsafe also that he had no authority to give tours. That man elderly man Carlos he went off by saying the F word and acting childish but R.S.O Emilio told him he needed to leave the and he went away. Even though the whole situation was tense and confrontational, Emilio handled everything professionally and did everything in his power to protect himself and the range I applaud him what great young man and Keith too who arrived after the incident unfolded I'll have to say they both are some great people and I'm glad that they are in charge of running this gun range and in charge. I'm so proud of the way they responded to the situation. my recommendation is that a few safety measures need to be taken in order to prevent any future accidents. The entry to the shooting range area deck needs to be blocked off after hours and before opening hours and they do not need to have sketchy and suspicious people walking around claiming that they are employees and letting them in for free. The RO's need more protection from confrontational customers. But other than that, I'll continue to give this range my business and thank you for keeping everything running great Keith and Emilio. But the ones wrong in this situation that unfolded yesterday was the hostile and confrontational customers and his family, and the employee who claims he's the co- manager was just rude and so suspicious. I'm sorry to be disrespectful but they need to not have trashy people and jail birds around customers they let the power go to their heads. The two running young man running this gun range have done a great job and both are very capable of serving the needs of every customer. As some regulars might know, they're currently experiencing remodeling and reconstruction (which is totally fine). I called a few days in advance to double check if their skeet shooting range is available. I was told it was. So I decided to take my friends and family to try shooting at clays for first time. Long story short, we were denied entry to shoot clays because it was unavailable due to remodeling. Keep in mind, I called to double check. The staff must not be in the know about where they work. It resulted in me driving over an hour for nothing. A complete waste of time. Learn from my mistake and don't waste your time shooting here either.

Rules are clearly posted and all of the rules make sense. Safety first! Range officer present was friendly and was safety oriented. Some ladies kind of sneaked in the side of the 25 yd pistol range and did not check in with the range officer (one of their posted rules). Range officer gave the all clear and while I was about 40 yards down range, I heard a shot ring out to my right (gulp!). Turns out the ladies paid no attention to the range officer's "Cease fire!" command. Boy, did he get them straightened out right away! My kind of range officer. Guy working inside the shop was also friendly. I had an issue with my AR 15 bolt and he was kind enough to assist me in dealing with the issue and we were able to correct it so my shooting session was not ruined. But, best of all was the QoC. QoC = Quality of Customers. Some shooting ranges seem to draw low life yahoos who are always trying to circumvent the rules. Plus, yahoos always make me nervous when they eyeball my gear as I go down range to post/adjust my targets. The customers I observed at this range were all responsible adults with top line equipment and were serious shooters shooting for accuracy. No rapid fire strings and no unsafe practices. I never felt my personal gear was in any jeopardy. Excellent Quality of Customers at this range this particular morning (a mid-week Tuesday; do you suppose the yahoos show up on Saturdays & Sundays?). I found their prices to be reasonable compared to the going prices of shooting ranges these days.
