Came here to do a little pew pew action with the crew for a friend's birthday. He specifically wanted to do clay shooting and Thunder Gun Range has the land to do this. It's a bit of a drive if you live in the Houston area, but I imagine you can't really do this kind of shooting in the city limits. The reviews are all over the place for this establishment, but this review is based on my visit and the experience we had. We arrived around 10 on a Saturday and were some of the first customers in. It is located right off a main road and has plenty of parking. Now, if you plan on shooting clay or taking advantage of some of their outdoor ranges, you will need to drive on some unpaved terrain, so plan accordingly. My sedan made it fine, but we had to leave some of our friends sports cars in the lot. Customer service was good. I personally paid for just shotgun usage which is per gun/shooter. If you want to do range or steel targets, there are additional charges. We were allowed to bring our own clays, guns and ammo. I like the set pricing and I like that their is no time limit. That being said, if you leave, time is up. Once we were all paid up, a member of their staff lead our convoy of vehicles to some land out back. It was an open field with the target throwers set up. I am a beginner shooter even though I own my own shotgun, but my friends are avid shooters. Even for a beginner, I feel like the equipment would be easy to use. We got all our guns ready and waited for everyone to arrive. The employee who brought us out does park off to the side and supervise from a distance. Only once did he have to come out and have us take a break as he had employees doing work out in the distance. Make sure you are shooting with the right ammo for what you are doing. This was my first time skeet shooting and I had a blast. We went through quite a bit of ammo and clays and everyone enjoyed myself. I left before the fellas went to another range, but no complaints from them in the other ranges either. My experience was a good one here. I felt safe and the employees here were very friendly and willing to help. I can see myself coming back! read more

I'm not a person that likes to write reviews and because I don't like to complain. l've been coming to thunder gun range for many many years. I know the owner and his wife I have bought guns from them and done business here and I'll continue giving this establishment my business. There has been many changes at thunder over the last few years and I like the way it is now more quiet and peaceful it's not crowded also you do your own thing and no one will bother you as long as you're being safe and the following the rules. Keith and Emilio, who is the head RSO and supervisor are very professional and do not tolerate any nonsense. Operations run smoothly and very safe under their watch. both are very good salesman and I have bought plenty of ammunition as so do other customers. It's a big change from the past compared to when they had so many people working there and nobody knew what they were doing. They had many sketchy/jail birds working there just walking around going on a power trip and bossing people around also smoking in your face that's just unprofessional and so rude. also threatening to kick people out because they are half owners and going around yelling at others. The event that happened that occurred yesterday morning at around 9:50 before opening. as they were opening up an older gentleman who was just rude, sketchy and very suspicious claimed he worked there and he's an employee. He walking around with customers on the range and let them set up their firearms on the firing deck when there was no R.S.O. present and the range wasn't even open this was 10 minutes before they opened and the range opens at 10:00 AM. This is could lead to a fatal accident and it's very unsafe!! According to the elderly man claimed he was related to the owner and was an employee there and he spoke in a yelling manner and waving his cigarette around. I thought it was very unsafe for people to be walking around and setting up fire arms on the shooting decks and me and my wife weren't the only ones who witnessed it another customer witnessed it. That's when Emilio who is the main employee and R.S.O. walked in and handle the situation professionally and corrected everything and let the customers that what they did was unsafe and that they needed to check in, pay at the desk and wait for the R.S.O to escort them to the range. The customers acted very disrespectful and went psycho and try to gang up and come up to the RSO, but he told the angry customer to stand back and put his hand out as be told him to stand back. He told that they needed to leave the property and that police would be called if the situation got out of control and if there was no no respect. The angry customers and his family were very confrontational and threw a temper tantrum. Also the so-called employee whose name is Carlos because I the RSO he was so rude and horrible. Emilio corrected the situation like a professional like it needed to be in and told him he did was not right and very unsafe also that he had no authority to give tours. That man elderly man Carlos he went off by saying the F word and acting childish but R.S.O Emilio told him he needed to leave the and he went away. Even though the whole situation was tense and confrontational, Emilio handled everything professionally and did everything in his power to protect himself and the range I applaud him what great young man and Keith too who arrived after the incident unfolded I'll have to say they both are some great people and I'm glad that they are in charge of running this gun range and in charge. I'm so proud of the way they responded to the situation. my recommendation is that a few safety measures need to be taken in order to prevent any future accidents. The entry to the shooting range area deck needs to be blocked off after hours and before opening hours and they do not need to have sketchy and suspicious people walking around claiming that they are employees and letting them in for free. The RO's need more protection from confrontational customers. But other than that, I'll continue to give this range my business and thank you for keeping everything running great Keith and Emilio. But the ones wrong in this situation that unfolded yesterday was the hostile and confrontational customers and his family, and the employee who claims he's the co- manager was just rude and so suspicious. I'm sorry to be disrespectful but they need to not have trashy people and jail birds around customers they let the power go to their heads. The two running young man running this gun range have done a great job and both are very capable of serving the needs of every customer. I just retired from being in special operations for nearly my entire army career and have been using firearms at an extremely high level for years and shot at countless ranges all over the US and this was by far the worst experience I've ever had and it's no wonder what the place was absolutely empty, The owner is incredibly rude and started screaming at me for absolutely no reason out if nowhere. I had just got out of my car literally did nothing. Just there wanted to shoot my pistol. I was absolutely blown away by this man. What a great place to come shoot first time customer and great prices and clean facilities. Thunder Gun range is a great place with a very big open range and plenty of inventory and a great selection holsters and guns. I'm not a person that likes to write bad reviews or make a business place look bad but sometimes range management needs to be made aware of certain things. During my visit to the range I came to shoot my new pistol I was well greeted and by the Main R.S.O Emilio who explained me on the safety rules and elaborated well he was great and even took the time to give me a tour of the range. But during my time there there were two other people in the next tall, shooting their pistol and an older gentleman with glasses who is a range employee he was wearing an orange vest came by to the two gentleman and he started going on talking about how immigrants were coming across the border, and that we should be loaded and ready if they invade the country. I can't remember exactly what he said, but I heard that to me it's just very inappropriate, offensive and RACIST!! that should not be tolerated in a professional place of business. I am writing this review so range management can be aware I decided not to report it because I don't want to get anybody in trouble. But racism should not be tolerated and made me uncomfortable to hear it. It's disgusting! read more

If I could give zero stars I would. This place is disgusting, the smell is off, the vibe is off. The worst range DO NOT GO. Owner tends to lash out, no actual accountability of how he runs his place. His son Emilio is the WORST instructor - screams a lot, NO CUSTOMER SERVICE what so ever. Doesn't know how to control his anger- yelled at me in front my kids. He could've came at us another way, no self control. ALL RANGE instructors are lazy and no help. The worker Danny is the worst as well, I walked up to the counter to ask for more ammo, he never got up to help me, just looked at me and looked back to his phone. Where is the manager? Who is managing this place? This place should shut down immediately. NO SAFETY NO CUSTOMER SERVICE. Whoever was the lady trying to sell me the 1911 for 1200 YIKES OVERPRICED. One of the best gun ranges I've been to ever. The storefront is massive with just about anything you need and more. The range outside is set up for all skill levels. Will never be coming back here rather go to full armor range or anywhere else this place is very poorly made outdated and rude workers I as a female felt very uncomfortable here by workers no maintenance done here aswell. Do not go to this gun range. They called the police on us for going to a range that the lady at the front desk told us to go to saying that we were trespassing and that we "didn't know what we were doing" despite us having lifetime experience with firearms. We had also rented a staple gun in exchange for a drivers license and then they refused to give us our ID back. The police sided with us despite the lady lying to them saying that she didn't say anything and trying to get us a ticket for trespassing. On top of that, she told them that we looked barely over the age of 15 (We're in our 20s). My question then is why would she let us shoot in the first place? 50/50 here. Every time I come here I get charged differently. From what I understand it's either by number of guns or people whichever is greater. 11/2020 I arrived with 3 people in my party and 2 guns and we just wanted to share one pistol range lane and one rifle range lane. They wanted to charge me like 100$ to shoot. We just left and hit shooters station in Conroe, was way cheaper that day and better customer service. Update: Lowered my star level after stopping by the second week of January 2021. My amigo purchased some 9mm ammo to shoot for well over priced (he didn't mind just didn't want to run his good ammo) and only 3 rounds outta each 15 round clip would shoot. Not only are the screwing you on the price but they are selling faulty ammo. When we brought it to the cashiers attention she told us their boxes have been arriving with duds and some of the rounds should shoot if we try to fire them a second time. Buyer BEWARE read more

Don't waste your money on this place if you are looking for a quality place to shoot skeet or sporting clays. We only came here because Blackwood Gun Club was underwater from all of the rain. Machines were all foot pedal. Out of 20 machines on the ground, only a handful worked and the flight paths were very inconsistent. Worker who showed us the range seemed unaware of the lack of working condition of his machines. Learned our lesson, we won't be back at this range. read more

I am 56 and have been shooting since a kid, never an accident or anyone injured. Shot at multiple ranges in multiple states. Always everywhere I have been Seize Fire means everyone stop shooting. But not here. People still shoot even when people go down range to hang targets. After being down range and yelling at the so called range officer for allow people to continue to fire while I was hanging a targets. The aka range officer had the balls to say I had threatened him. There were 2 gentlemen there that agreed with me I never threatened anyone. The owner just blew it off and told his employee who kept threatening to call the police on me to be quiet and go away. Before today I have been here 6 or 7 times and have always been charged different amounts. Today I spoke to the owner about it and he said he was going to have to talk with his employees. But I got the distinct feeling my complainant was going nowhere. Bottom line Pricing varies depending on the person at the register. SAFETY DOES NOT EXIST. Employee threaten to call police on me when I complained about the safety. Of being down range while people fired guns. For your Own Safety STAY AWAY. Safer Places to shoot. read more

Outdoor range not far outside of houston. From a location standpoint it is a good deal; however, prepare to pay dearly for the convienence of the location. Pricing is, get this, by gun or by person, whichever yields the higher amount. Let that sink in..I thought the staffer was messing with me at first and had to ask if she was serious. So, if you are one person and want to zero two rifles on the 100yd, then hit the pistol range with a 9mm and .45, you are talking about paying 4x the price. Never seen a pricing scheme like this and hope to never see it again. The facilities are nice enough, but far below what you'd expect for a $50+ range fee and no outside targets...oh yeah, forgot to mention you can't bring your own targets. From a safety perspective, it's a well run range. Lots of good control measures and the appropriate amount of RSOs. This place seems to be designed for the person who doesn't know much about shooting but is willing to pay through the nose to have a shooting experience. While I was there, there was a father and his middle aged sons who showed up with no equipment whatsoever. Before you could say "one thousand dollars," they were kitted out for the range with their safety gear, some slick ar-15s and a box of 1,000 rounds. If this is what you are looking for, then this might be the place for you. Not a good place for reloaders, or if you want to hit multiple ranges. For the most part, not a great place if you are a competitive shooter or moderately into shooting sports. For now, definately going to be my backup range/ range of last resort. read more

One staff member was rude enough to ruin my entire experience here. I accidentally went into the wrong stall (all except one was empty). He came out before I started shooting, screaming at me. I apologized for accidentally being in the wrong stall and he told me the apology didn't matter and to "get my a** into the other stall". I was pretty surprised by the not so great reviews on this range. I agree that the pricing system ($ per gun) is wrong and should be addressed seeing as every other range I've been to does not charge per gun. With that said, it is my favorite range in the Houston area. Staff was great. They don't sit over your shoulder like a lot of the other ranges. I was impressed with the number of lanes and loved being outdoors. The distance the target is set at is far greater than many other ranges which I like. I will definitely be coming back lots! Ricky G is right on, although I haven't seen the 300 yard range yet. All the ranges are outside, and the 25-50-100 rifle ranges have more cover over them than the pistol range. There's one or two mini-ranges for shotguns if you want to unload a bunch of ammo for fun. I haven't seen the tactical range but I heard it's timed with metal targets. On the pistol range the targets are moved with a manual pulley. They shut both the pistol and rifle ranges down at the same time when switching out targets on the rifle range, which happens about every hour or half hour. Oh and don't rapid fire or bump fire unless you want to get kicked out. You can bring your own ammo, but not your own targets. They charge you for each shooter and each gun, and I think the price differs on what range you go to but that may be simply because the rifle and pistol ranges use different targets. They have a pretty big indoor shop, not alot of inventory in terms of guns but they do carry alot of ammo and you can buy it in bulk. Also inside there's a little cafe or hotdog stand or whatever. The folks that run the place are pretty laid back, and the customers are typically pretty friendly. And people bring all kinds of guns up there. I've also seen people bring their kids up there, either to teach them how to shoot or just as spectators, so the place is pretty family friendly. read more

The only redeeming quality this range had was a 300 yard rifle range, but no longer. They make you use their paper targets at a very inflated price. I have not had the time to look at or if anyone can use the other handgun areas but I have heard only LEO or people paying for a class can shoot them. Range prices are the highest in the area. Several reasons for my review. One being that the owner is HIGH! My husband has gone to this range several times, we live close by.

The pricing structure has changed it seems as they don't have crazy membership fees etc. I don't know if that's here to stay but for $20 you can hit the pistol and rifle range at multiple yards. I love the fact they don't time you or charge by the hour and I have had some time to meditate with my gun there practicing breath control. I wish they stocked basic tools as I had forgotten my wrench but they were kind enough to lend me one. Also, the standard scope batteries for red dots aren't stocked either so it was a frustrating day on the range for me not being able to shoot once my reticle went dead. Completely my fault for leaving it on the day before I went. I've since changed scopes and have something that works well. The people are pleasant and safety is important and enforced. I used to go to Eagles Peak when I lived in Round Rock and liked that range better. They actually had a net catch your brass and it rolled into a bucket. This place has decking that allows your brass to fall through and it's captured on a platform outside of your reach. If you like to reload I would bring a net to catch your brass. That's really my only bone to pick is them keeping my brass. They also only go out 200 yards but I like that it is outdoor so wind and other factors make it real world scenario. The other thing I've never cared for is the no double tap rule or the ability to test your speed on target. It doesn't matter how fast you are or if your on target, you need to count one one thousand between shots. Sometimes it's nice to quickly find your target and strike accurately without being yelled at for rapid fire. It's not a bad range but I'm looking for something a little different. read more

First went to this range about 6 months ago. Had been talking about shooting, with friends, and about how I had not gone in years (decades?!). They invited my GF and myself to come out with them. Had an enjoyable time. So much so that I have been acquiring firearms again. The range was fairly accommodating for whatever you'd care to engage in back then. It has expanded continuously since then. In fact, every time I visited there was some new construction or renovation completed. As an expansion they have started a shooting club, Thunder Shooting Club, that has been a wonderful find. $35 a year seemed like a low risk proposition. Coached Instruction and a weekly opportunity to do so has brought me out on a weekly basis almost! I had never needed a holster before, and now I own 3. And the people I have met and the fellowship in this group is just awesome. Great group of men and women! Target shooting, tactical instruction, or competition, this place has a good opportunity to find just what you are looking for. My only complaint is that they charge per gun/person on the range. That currently limits me a bit. I could fire 200 rds total with 1 pistol for $10 or $30 for 3 pistols. So generally I take only one at a time. Next year I will buy a range membership and solve that issue. Then I have only to buy targets and just shoot whatever I feel like. read more

Took my 15 year old grandson there to shoot some clays on the shotgun range IE: One shooter and one gun. We did have a friend of my grandsons with us but he was there only to watch, not shoot. The young lady behind the counter wanted to charge me for 3 people (me, grandson and friend). When I pointed out I was there only to launch the clays she relented on charging me but insisted my grandsons friend must pay even he was not shooting!! 1. They charge extra if your shooting an AR/AK. Charge Extra for shooting 200yds 2. I usually go out to shoot w/ 3+ guns. Yes, they are more expensive. American Shooting Center is closer to me, and I can take 3 guns for $27.50, and I get to police up my brass for reloading purposes. 3. I am a left handed shooter, Thunder has no benches set up for Left Handed shooters at all. + The only thing I did like, was the pistol range. No cease fires, because of their pulley system. That is the ONLY + to Thunder. When you shoot as much as I do, then you become picky. 4. I'd go shoot at Athena any day of the week, it's just minutes from my home, and there again, I can still police up my brass for reloading purposes, which is forbidden at Thunder gun range, due to how their benches are elevated, and the planks are spaced apart so your brass falls against THUNDER's brass catcher, so you can NEVER retreive your own brass. 5. They might be Mom & Pop, but to charge extra just because you shoot AR's. C'mon, a gun is a gun. Jim Snyder, yes I do ask, and no other range that I have used has ever denied me the ability to police up my brass for reloading, except Thunder gun range. 6. Ranges I will shoot at over Thunder. Spring Guns & Ammo, American Shooting Center, Hot Wells, Top Gun, Athena. The list is getting longer. *My best find of ranges is American Shooting Center, 1 price per gun/pistol, extra guns, a nominal fee for each additional gun, for shooting from 7yds-300yds. You must qualify at 300yds to shoot the extended ranges of 400, 500, & 600yds, no extra costs. I'm giving my honest appraisal as a regular shooter. If you don't like what I have to say, don't down on me. This is my opinion. If you don't like it, that is your problem. read more

So, most of the reviews here are years old and I took that into account when I decided to make the trip here, that and the fact that it's only a mile down the road. I went and it was very reasonably priced, $13 for a pistol lane and unlimited shooting time, and no interruptions from staff or other people. Only problem I see for people would be that you can't keep shells, can't use your own targets (extras are $1), and no rapid firing. I'll be back again for sure and put down as many rounds as I'd like for as long as I'd like. Great range! read more
