I really like this unique concept of turntables and outdoor gear. It's a really good idea and I always see customers in the store. Finding quality turntables in Seattle is hard. Even many record stores don't seem to carry them as much unless you go to Seattle records or inner vision. Spencer, the owner has a niche on the market. It used to be that the Dearborn Goodwill, some pawn shops that weren't sketch, and various record shops had some lp120's or technique 1200's. These days I just see cheap Crosley's for sale at Barnes and Noble. The selection of vinyl is good and prices are solid. The expertise is great and it reminds me of Hawthorne Stereo. I love the big selection of outdoor gear also and the prices are good for new and used. I enjoy shopping here and I'm glad it's part of the Lake City community. seem dated and overpriced, goodwill is often junky with quality, Hawthorne is great but can get pricy, the Ave which used to carry a lot of turntables in the early 00's scaled back. Every person I spoke with was knowledgeable and beyond helpful!! They have the goods and although I am familiar with the hifidelity products I note that the hiking gear is also extensive. No one really chats with me at all when I am there and mostly "pretend to be busy." I've almost purchased a few times but when I got the item in hand I ask a question and no one bothers to answer. I was not able to get the attention of staff even when I started in about specifics. Petty beurgiuos buyers ignoring customers. They don't offer any repair parts so it's definitely not for a hobbyist. The item I wanted had no price tag so I left. I am familiar with many of the products. Most of the clerks are deaf from listening to loud music! One thing they do say often is "you can go down the street and buy that at Fred Meyer" I don't understand why they said this? What is the point? It's a used product store. Why direct people to the supermarket and away from buying used? I am a hobbyist repair person and I was interested in trying a new sport. read more

I was so excited to get my first record after I got a record player for my birthday. I went into the store on a break from work with a friend and had my lunch in my hand. The owner had a golden retriever who immediately came up to me and my friend. The owner, or whoever it was behind the desk said "oh he's a bad dog and will steal your food" as the dog tried to jump up on me. He did not make any attempt to curb the dog or bring the dog behind the desk so I could peruse the store. As someone who has had dogs that were better trained, this was unacceptable. Going to Turntables and Trails was one of the best decisions I've made in awhile. A couple of people had recommended that I go there when I was ready to get a record player. When I walked in, I had only a vague idea of what I wanted. Dave went through the decision with me thoroughly and patiently, demonstrating several sets of speakers to make sure that I liked what I heard before I made the purchase. When I left, I felt very comfortable about the choices I had made and extremely excited to go home and set everything up. Everything sounded great, except there was a slight, repeating soft pop that was only audible when no music was playing. When I called, they encouraged me to bring back the used receiver I had bought. Of course, there was no pop when they plugged it in at the store. But Spencer was so great about swapping it out for something else--a slightly more expensive receiver, and he didn't even charge me the difference! When I brought it home, the issue was resolved. It is so rare anymore to get this level of customer service--they were so patient and kind throughout. As a little bonus, they have a dog that hangs out at the store who is as nice as can be. Now I have an amazing sounding new setup. I feel better than ever about the guidance I was given, and so happy with the results every time I give a listen. Big thanks to Dave and Spencer! We haven't had a stereo system in 30 years so we knew we would need personalized help to make this 'could be complicated' purchase. Thanks to posted yelp reviews we headed to this little shop and it met our needs perfectly. We described our wish for a solid system that would fit together easily and sound great at a price we could afford. The salesman put together a receiver, speakers, and a turntable and went through all the connections so we'd be able to assemble it at home. He had a few suggestions for which upgrades would be good values. So appreciate the advice! I'd come here again in a blink for the service . Big box stores don't begin to do as well. I took my old Pioneer turntable in to see why I wasn't getting any audio. They took a look at it and quickly diagnosed the problem. 1) no needle and 2) apparently newer amplifiers don't have a phono input- mine only had an audio in. So they recommended a preamp and it works great. They are professional, courteous and very informative. I'm so very glad I found this resource. read more

As I said to my wife, giddy on the drive home, "I haven't had this feeling about music since I got my first MP3 player in 2000." We were gifted an old record-player "that needed some work" for Christmas, having never used or owned one before. We were beyond green in what it would take to get actual music to come out of it, so I peppered Seattle record stores asking for somewhere I could bring the turntable, and be taught how to analyze it, work it, and repair it on my own. Nearly all responses were duds - except Spencer - who told me to come by any weekday to take a look. We were in Spencer's shop the next evening, and he had a near laser-like focus on welcoming us to the world of vinyl. At the end of the night, we would only turn out to be $200 customers, but the price-tag was beyond Spencer - he stayed open an hour later to warmly, genuinely, and patiently walk us through the world of record players - never rolling his eyes or mocking us for our ignorance, but sharing his love of music and the engineering that goes into this hardware. We learned so much in two hours, felt confident in how to inspect our equipment for service, and how to use it. Our house has been filled with rich music for the last 12 hours to the tunes of Supertramp, the Four Seasons, Miles Davis, and now Tchaikovsky while I write this. Spencer never tried to up-sell us, make us feel uneducated (although we were) in our lack of knowledge, or bind us to his store/equipment (30-day return policy, still in touch via email on Q&A, and recommended record stores around Seattle for particular types of music). I couldn't have asked for a better educational session and introduction to this soon-to-be-hobby, or for a better way to start off our New Year - filling our home with beautiful, newly-discovered music. Review in the Time of Covid: This business is responsive by email, answered questions, and was very helpful. The person I talked to let me know the business was busier on the weekends, so I came early during the week. I was the only one in the shop, the person working was masked, and we were able to keep distance, even in the small shop. I got two old pieces of equipment (stereo receiver and turntable) looked at and had the contacts cleaned, bought a couple of speakers, and left extremely happy. I brought in an old turntable I had tried to fix myself. Spencer immediately took to checking it out and debugged through a bunch of options with me in the shop. He was clearly as curious as I was when I first picked it up. I had found one problem, but he showed me a few others to look for. I went in with a pair of speakers to see if I would rather buy a pair that were compatible with the record player I was on my way to purchase, or to buy a different record table at this shop that was compatible with the speakers I had on me. Instead of him convincing me to buy either component from the shop, he helped me convert the speaker wire to be compatible with the record player I was on my way to buy at a minimal cost. Showed me how to assemble it and wanted to make sure I was 100% satisfied and everything worked perfectly before I made my purchase.
