So many small Mexican restaurants that are excellent. And this one now in Hell's Kitchen. Greeted by the loveliest woman who may be the owner, I'm not sure. Per her recommendation, my wife (who wasn't feeling so well today) ordered her soup which she believed would settle her stomach. My wife says it's one of the best soups she's ever tried, rivaling the Sancocho that her mother makes. I decided to go for the burrito and adding goat as the protein. Sorry if it looks kind of scary to break it open, but I wanted you to see the contents inside. The baked goat was absolutely delicious peppered with some sweet jalapeños throughout giving it just a nice kick. The queso fundido with mushrooms was very good, but I would've preferred tortillas with it instead of chips. Lovely people. Lovely ambience. From the moment I walked into Tulcingo, I was transported straight to my mother's kitchen. The flavors in every dish were an instant reminder of the comfort and warmth I grew up with. Ordering the red chilaquiles was the recommendation from the host, in terms of spice(they are way more spicy than green but both were so flavorful.) As soon as I took my first bite, I was transported back home. Each bite was bursting with the kind of authentic taste you only find in family recipes. The presentation of the food was nothing short of artful, with each plate arriving like a masterpiece, carefully crafted and thoughtfully prepared. It was clear that the team at Tulcingo puts as much care into how the dishes look as they do into how they taste. But the experience didn't stop with the food. The service was absolutely spectacular--attentive, warm, and friendly, making me feel right at home. My new favorite Mexican restaurant in Hells Kitchen. Excellent menu items that I'll need to come back several more times to really make a dent. My first visit was a weekday lunch and opted for the Goat Tacos which were AWESOME. A little heavy on the guac and pepper, so recommend getting that on the side, otherwise it'll get messy and honestly it can take away from the goat flavor a bit. Chips and Salsa are the best I've had in New York. Would come back just for those. The service was very quick and friendly. I bonded with the owner over our Texas roots, and she even shared that her son is opening a restaurant in Houston which is now on my hit list there. read more

I live in the area so was walking around looking for somewhere to eat. After the place across the street had no openings, this place looked cute from the outside, so decided to try it. I'm normally not one to complain, but overall it was a really disappointing experience. The service was basically non-existent. We ordered the chips and salsa. Somehow the salsa was way overly spicy and watery, but tasteless at the same time like they had used no seasoning or salt at all. The cups are tiny, so we sat at our table for 20-25 minutes with nothing to drink as our water was nowhere to be found. Not a good combination with spicy salsa. For my main entree I ordered the chimichanga. It was alright, granted I had to add salt because it basically had no taste to it either. It was the same with the other person in my group - lacked any taste. If you're looking for a good Mexican restaurant to eat at in Hell's Kitchen -I'd try somewhere else! I have been going to this restaurant on a regular basis for over 25 years. Tonight I had the worst meal I have ever had here. Tasteless food, super overpriced sides and horribly overpriced and under served drinks. The response from the wait staff and owner was amazingly combative. Times have changed at a once good establishment. I won't set foot in there again and you should consider looking for more bang for your buck. Folks from California in particular like to complain that New York doesn't have good Mexican food, which is of course patently untrue. You just have to know where to look, what to order. I got the poblano mole here which I would definitely recommend. (I also had the handmade tortillas with this.) My husband got a burrito, which was fine, I think, but no "mission burrito" (IYKYK). Both of us had clean plates though -- the testament of a good meal I thought the salsas that came with the chips and salsa were all pretty good too. I finally found a great Mexican restaurant in NYC! The server (might have been the owner), was very nice and friendly. The chips were served hot and not being a big salsa person, it was very good. I ordered the chile relleno and it was delicious. The cheese could have been a little more ooey-gooey, but that's a slight nitpick. Service was slow. Got appetizers and drinks quick. Actual food took awhile to come. There is only one bathroom. I'm unsure if they are short staffed. Food was okay. Pet peeve when going out to eat is having to look for the waiter to ask for the check. The guy behind the bar was also serving and bussing tables, so that was why it was slow. But he was hustling and still friendly, but they needed help. I'll probably come back to see if I can update my review if things have gotten better. The restaurant wasn't very busy with only 2 tables inside with ppl and 5 outside with ppl sitting at them. There may have been 2 ppl working the tables total. The decor was great, we ate outside. Beware it's on a busy street, 10th Ave. There are sirens and motorcycles loudly revving, so if you are looking for somewhere romantic, this ain't it. We started off with chips and guac with jalapeño in the side since my date isn't a fan of spicy but i am! They were pretty yummy. I got 3 tacos - 2 chicken tacos and 1 taco al pastor and they were deliiicious. Thankful that I was able to get 2 different fillings so I could try both. They were a bit slow on service but the food and up for that. The food: I was a big fan of it. The guacamole and salsa starter was fresh with the right amount of heat. I got the ribs in green salsa, and oh my gosh, were they good. So tender with just the right amount of spice. And, of course, the rice and beans were done correctly. Authentic Mexican taste in nyc. Tulcingo is a nice casual place with outside sheltered street dining set up for covid protocols. Started off with the obligatory fresh made guacamole and chips. This was very solid, made w big chucks and even had the seed in the bottom of the dish. It was complimented w the tulcingo margarita and paloma. Both very well made and fresh but the premixed Jose Cuervo shyte others try to trick you with. On the mains we had salmon veracruz style w rice and refried beans side along w a fish burrito (grilled flounder). The burrito was ordered to set the baseline because any Mexican restraint worth its weight in pesos should make a solid burrito. The salmon was awesome! Large piece of fish ( must've been at least 2 lbs). Filleted and swimming in a delicious tomato based sauce with onions peppers and other spices. Refried beans and arroz were excellent and topped w more avocado. The burrito w grilled flounder was exceptional and covered w a little crema for both style and taste compliments. Tons of food and large portions so bring your appetite and don't order too much. Couldn't finish it all and were completely stuffed. All tables were filled but plenty of space and protection. The one drawback which is not specific to this place is that they were understaffed. 2 people for 15 tables and they make the drinks the quac and take orders and everything but do the cooking. So be patient. The servers work their tails off and are great they just need help. Bring your empathy and patience and appetite and you won't be disappointed. Que Bueno!!! Muy Bien tulcingo. I've been coming here for years and I think this is easily one of the best Mexican restaurants in NYC. This is as close to the tacos you'll find in LA. I'm not sure why they have such a low rating on Yelp, it's totally undeserved. Their guacamole is always on point. And my favorite tacos here are the al pastor and lengua. They're so good and the guac is the saucey type similar to what you find in Mexico. I've been ordering the soup lately too which is also amazing. This is a really tough review to write but I'm going to say this place is a 3.75 and I am not rounding up. I am a huge supporter of small business COVID or not, but this place performed well in the wrong places and faltered in the places it should have performed well on. If you ready my review for other Mexican food places, you know the bar is high as I was born and raised in Mexico. I came here on a Sunday at 8PM for dinner. I was told by my doorman that he gets his tacos and all Mexican food on W 47th and 10th so after walking up to 3 restaurants, I chose this one. I'll return to W 47th and 10th to discover other Mexican restaurants when I get a craving but I am not sure about returning to Tulcingo just yet. Food: 4.3 Al Pastor Torta Where it went right: the ingredients. The iceberg was crunchy as it can be! Extra credit for the slice of white (American) cheese? Where it went wrong: the absolute wrong and bland seasoning which makes it non-Al Pastor and the amount of time the meat was cooked, almost burnt. The bland seasoning and the burnt combined did not help. This is an EASY fix because the cooking method is correct! Price: 4 Al Pastor Torta was $8.50 and plus tax it was $9.25 and I tipped 23% because I still believe in supporting small business especially during the pandemic. FYI, they have Gansito (Mexican chocolate covered Twinkie) in the convenient store and it's only $1.00 each. $1.00 for a single not double pack though. Service: 3.2 Long, long wait. I am not sure how to put this but the shop itself is really small and it doubles as a convenience store selling Mexican produce and snacks and the kitchen is all the way in the back. There's only outdoor dinning and the outdoor dining is set up really well because it's not a flimsy set up, it's real wooden dividers and tables and cut-out tissue paper plus decorative lights. Outdoor sitting area is BIG. Perhaps only having one server attend my table, right in front of the shop on the right, and the other table on the left, and all 5 tables across on the actual street, was just too much to handle? The cook brought out my torta. There's a cute Chiclet that comes with the bill, but it's just too convenient when you waited to order for 11 minutes and 9 minutes for the check. The kicker: all the other tables were waiting too. I wasn't "neglected" because the server was attending other tables. We were all neglected and we all just stared at each other when we peeked outside of our curtain. Cleanliness & COVID: 3.5 I saw them use Windex to clean my table before I sat down. No hand sanitizer at the table. No bathroom to wash your hands since 1/2 of the restaurant was closed or permanently shut down? read more

I'm a Chips/ salsa snob and theirs did not disappoint, spicy just the way I like it. Extensive menu to choose from and rather large portions. Large, well built outdoor dining area equipped with heaters and social distancing in place. The staff was super friendly and helpful but somewhat slow. While the food is amazing I'm giving 4 stars as the drinks are not that strong and way overpriced for what you actually get. That will not stop me from returning. From the outside, ​it isn't much to look at but the upon entering, the atmosphere is warm and friendly. ​This is a no frills​, casual place with bright orange walls, colorful tablecloths and framed pictures all over the wall. The menu was quite big with photos of the food and drinks, which was great! I was excited by all the different and tasty looking Mexican drinks and ordered the Horchata, my absolute favorite Mexican beverage (which is for some reason difficult to find in NYC). When I tried the Horchata, it tasted incredibly powdery and not fresh at all. It was so bad that I had to send it back and just drank water. We were served complimentary chips and salsa, which was much appreciated. Not every Mexican restaurant continues to do that so it was a nice touch. For my entree, I was trying to decide between the chicken, beef or shrimp fajita. I finally ordered the beef fajita which came on a sizzling platter with green and red peppers, onion and tomatoes, along with Mexican rice and a ton of tortilla. My meal was delicious, but it didn't come with cheese. For me, it's not fajita if there is no cheese, so I had grated Parmesan cheese on the side for an extra $2.50. The beef was flavorful and tender. The sauce that coated the meat and vegetable was full of yummy seasoning and all the ingredients tasted wonderful together. The Mexican rice was orange-ish in color and had peas, carrots and corn mixed in. This was pretty good - cooked to perfection! The waitress was nice and tried her best. All in all, a decent experience and the pricing was not bad. I paid $20 including tax and tip for my beef fajita and had some leftover to enjoy the next day. I wouldn't go out of my way to come back, but might give it another try if I'm in the area. read more

Where do I even start!! I'm a MASSIVE fan of this place. It's a literally my FAVORITE Mexican restaurant in New York City. I've been a loyal customer for about 10 years. Not only is the food incredible, but the owners are incredibly special, they treat you like family. It's a little hole in the wall restaurant in Hell's Kitchen with a spicy kick to it. If you're looking for authentic Mexican food, well-made drinks (let me tell you, some are strong perk you up kinda drinks) and a laid-back environment. I totally recommend you to come here. They've been incredibly proactive during the pandemic, by setting up a cute Mexican vibe setting outdoors. This place takes customer safety very seriously. They wear masks, super clean environment, and enforce social distancing. They also have hand sanitizer stations.
