He was quite friendly and provided specific directions to the location. Google Maps will get you there. Signage is minimal so drive slowly so you don't miss the entrance. Upon arrival, we checked in and were paired with a horse. I had the pleasure of riding Gunsmoke. After a brief tutorial (left, right, stop, and go), we were ready to ride off into the sunset. An amazing experience was had. This is located near the dude ranch. Reservations are a must. We reserved for the sunset ride. We were quickly given an easy 1-2-3 of steering and handling the horse. I had the pleasure of riding atop of Romeo. The staff were pretty reserved and friendly. The ride was about 1.5 hours long thru a desert path. It was amazing to see the horses navigate in incline and descent rocky terrain. They would halt or slow down walking until they got good footing. Depending on the weather bringing sun shades, water, mask for dusk, proper attire would be recommended. However, I was not fully prepared. As someone who rides horses regularly, I was bummed to miss my weekly lesson due to an unexpected trip. Thankfully, Tucson Mountain Stables came through and helped me get my horse time in with a beautiful sunset ride. Booking was easy, and when my friend and I arrived, the horses were already tacked up and ready to go. I rode Beast, a stunning Percheron cross with a great temperament, and my friend rode Romeo, a Navajo horse who was equally lovely. Both horses were steady, well-cared for, and clearly comfortable on the trail. The views were absolutely breathtaking--everything was still green, and riding through the west side of town offered a perspective you just don't get from a car. This place was difficult to find - there is no signage until you are there. Recommend placing signage just before the White Stallion Resort and some signage on the way -- especially with the ongoing construction. My granddaughter and I had a pretty good ride. My saddle was leaning toward the left side. One of the guides tried to adjust it prior to leaving while I was still on the saddle so it wasn't as affective. Not being an experienced rider, I did not realize it was not adjusted correctly. The facility is a bit rough and the guide has only been riding for 4 months. There was very little information about safety, etc. I've been to one other horseback trail riding facility in Oro Valley and the experience was much better. It's a good deal but definitely very rustic (especially the port a potty "restroom"). read more

They say you get what you pay for and this was certainly true. We did the 80$ 2-hour ride, and we started late (we weren't told to be early or anything, we arrived on time), I was told it would be a private ride (it was not, we had two others join us), and our guide was the opposite of friendly. As an experienced rider, I felt the ride was quite boring. We walked super slow and the scenery got boring. Our guide wasn't quite rude, but she gave us no instruction and didn't speak to us once, except to scold me for dismounting the house by myself (she didn't tell us to wait for her or say anything). We don't even know her name- she was a slender, tall, redhead. She didn't stop once on the trail and ask if we wanted any pictures at all. She begrudgingly took a picture of us back at the stable after we asked her to. Very disappointed with our ride and experience, would only recommend if you have never ridden before and this is what fits in your budget. read more

I cannot recommend this place enough. From start to finish, everything was fantastic. I called the day before to make a reservation and Bob got everything squared away. I arrived a little bit early and my guide was getting the horses ready. Mystery, my guide, was very personable, knowledgeable about the local vegetation and surroundings and so informative. One can easily see her love and deep interest in horses. She is so patient and truly helps you feel comfortable. My two hour trail ride took us up a mountain. Nearly 3000 feet and what a view! It was a bit breathtaking- I wouldn't say scary because the horses were comfortable with the trail and Mystery was a confident guide. The best place to ride in Tucson. We have been twice. Both times were amazing. Great horses, great people and great scenery. You ride on 6000 acres of beautiful desert scenes. You may run into a coyote or some cows. The horses are the best. They seem like they enjoy their job. No draggy slow pokes or annoying grazers holding up the line. I loved the horses, they were beautiful and sweet. I had asked the owner when booking if the horses were just going to follow each other he said but that is literally what the helper said when loading us and that is exactly what happened. The 1.5 sunset ride ended before the sunset which was acceptable as we had ridden across the same area for 1.5 hours, like riding a train through the mall. Scenery is beautiful for the first 45 minutes, but trip was so uneventful. If I could suggest, the person leading the ride should be able to talk to the group about the area, the horses, the name of the mountains, something. If we are going to cover the same area for an 1.5 it could be made more interesting with some local facts. The leader was sweet but rode in front and would only ask us to raise our hand if we are having fun, "no, not really." I was with both of my daughters, we are rarely in the same city. We could not take a picture except a picture of their backs as we are only in a row for 1.5 hours. We saw the sunset from the freeway, so many other places we could have been. read more

Had a great ride with Mystery (guide) and Linebacker (ride) through the Tortolita Preserve. There was some excitement when Linebacker picked up a Cholla, but Mystery got it out in short time and got back on the trail. This was a great ride to see all the prickly things in the desert. We were riding novices, yet our guide put us completely at ease- even going up steep Rocky Mountains. Our tour guide was very knowledgeable about the cacti, animals and history. My boyfriend and I booked a sunset ride for the beginning of July at the start of 2 week NY to AZ road trip. I love saguaros and the Saguaro National Park and it was going to be one of the highlights of the trip. We arrived that very warm night and Mystery took the two of us out into the hills. I am disappointed with the ride we had. The website said that due to COVID, all rides would only have one party, but we were combined with another large group. Additionally, I went with my boyfriend who had never ridden before whereas I am quite experienced. On the phone when I called to book, I was told that he would be fine and that they would make sure I would have the opportunity to trot/go faster than a walk so I would enjoy it too, but this never happened. I was able to trot once for about 5 seconds to close the gap with the horse in front of me and that's it. I picked this place because of their promise to cater to our different skill levels, so now I wish we had gone elsewhere. We did the sunset ride, so the views were absolutely stunning, and that is why I am giving two stars. I also wish that our guide would have talked more about the desert, the area, and what we were seeing, but she was quiet except for asking us periodically if we were doing ok. read more

When you first drive up it might not look like the best place to go, but once you get on your horse and start riding through the desert it is magical. We went up and down through a mountain and also rode on flat ground. We even got ride a little bit fast for a bit. It was one of my favorite parts. We were able to take a half day ride (4 hours) upon our request. We went out with Laura who was fantastic! She allowed us to stop at numerous places where she took pictures of my dad and I which all turned out fantastic. She was easy to talk to and made the entire ride enjoyable.
