Mediocre food is helped by the great service and swanky location. Yelped, please don't read this as a scathing denial of Tsunami. Read it as an assessment of a reliable neighborhood establishment that quite honestly is just a placeholder for, what I hope, is a wake up call for the chef to flex the same skill that the front of the house has in spades. When was the last time you went for sushi/maki and took out a pair of reader glasses to see your food? I'm thinking the restaurant must be profitable because each roll is all net and no fish. What I mean is the roll slices are each about the size of a large almond nestled tightly in a bed of rice. The size itself is not a major issue but the amount of rice to fish is just plain insulting to the multiple Benjamin that the bill amounted to for our party of four. The edamame beans are steamed well and not overly soft but they are overly dressed when you pay the extra $1 for them to backstroke in chili oil and minced garlic. The potstickers are routine, although again, steamed to perfect softness. We only ordered Maki (sushi rolls) and no sushi or sashimi. The Spicy Tuna lacks the "spicy" but, as expected here in MD, the tuna was perfectly fresh and smooth. As I mentioned above, too much rice and microscopic slices leave you feeling like an old lady repeatedly yelling, "where's the beef?!?" The Annapolitan was a mistake to order. The crab is not as fresh as the other fare and, Im sorry, but enough with the Old Bay...especially in a Sushi spot. The Cruchy was fresh but we all wanted more after eating. The Tsunami Roll and Hot House are the stars but only because of the creamy spicy sauce that tops these. Bottom Line: Sushi/Maki is the perfect medium to showcase daring and flavors. Tsunami is clearly making no compromise on freshness and technique but is seriously lacking in creativity and daring. The Mustard Miso Glazed Sea Bass has the flavor balance to be a great dish. However, it was overcooked such that the Sea Bass was no longer the flaky and buttery bite that one craves, but rather, a dense medium, closer to firm tofu, that just carried the sauce. Props, however, for presenting the plate over a bed of perfectly blister shishito peppers. We ordered all three desserts that Tsunami has to offer to split amongst the table. Even with our hearty bar bill accumulated, these offerings were just meh. The Fried Banana (think egg roll with a whole banana as the center) over Vanilla Ice Cream is shallow in flavor. The Creme Brûlée is awkwardly out of place for the restaurant theme and sadly pedestrian. The Nutty Brownie was tasty but again, mediocre. The Service was attentive and engaging without breaking conversation. The wait staff appear to have a good command of both the menu and bar. Extra star for that alone. If you live in walking distance, Tsunami could be a reliable spot for a consistent but not overwhelming sushi cravings. If you need to drive, save the planet and your coins and possibly drive elsewhere. read more

The service was fast and friendly. They had a lot of options for fancy drinks and IPAS. Not as many basic beers. We tried the edamame. It was great! Sprinkled w old bay. I chose the Siracha Mac n cheese. But added chicken. Not bad at all. There was music and it was dimly lit. We sat in the window seat which was nice because we could watch the people outside too. I've been here a few times now and it is consistently good. We got the spring rolls and miso soup to start which were both great, definitely recommend. The two sauces the spring rolls come with are a great addition to the dish. For the sushi we got 3 Hosomaki Rolls (8pc each). The annapolitan (real crab meat & old bay) was my favorite. The spicy tuna roll was okay but I didn't like how the spicy portion was just seasoning on the rice. A special evening out with my family turned into a horrible experience. Our waitress was extremely rude, inattentive, and rolled her eyes at us for asking for more water... We had dinner here last night with my sister and her husband. Service was really great and we really enjoyed our cocktails. The food was just okay. I did enjoy the pork belly bites, the fish and chips and the duck. We got two sushi rolls and they were okay but nothing great. We also got the octopus but there was just too much sauce for me. The tuna steamed bun was fine but nothing special. Not sure we'll be back to eat but I would come back to have a drink at the bar. I have a lot of mixed feelings leaving this review. Why? Because this place has good food, decent bar service, and a fun ambiance. However, I cannot in good faith rate Tsunami higher bc the last few times I went, I found roaches in the bathroom and near where the bar meets the bathroom hallway. This wasn't a one time occurrence and it became very regular seeing them. I haven't been back since. It's also, more often than not, very loud here. Every time I come here, I leave wondering why I come here. (Answer: it's the closest sushi place to my house.) It's not a bad place to dine, but I'm always a bit underwhelmed. First of all, experience-wise, it's kind of dim inside and can get really noisy. They only have street parking, which can be hit or miss. Happy hour seems like a great deal, until you realize that the 1/2 price sushi rolls are very small and the flavors are all pretty bland, and the happy hour appetizer list really only knocks off ~$1 off the regular price of the dish. We ordered the blackened shrimp tacos last time and they were the worst tacos we've ever had (and it is hard to get us to dislike a taco). Each taco was 3 medium shrimp on a piece of lettuce with a sliver of avocado. At $9, you're essentially paying $1/shrimp. Never again. The good service and the cocktail menu are the best parts of dining here. read more

Went to this restaurant for the first time and found it quite unique. The food was pretty good. Our group of 5 was seated right away. We ordered sushi, steak, spring & vegetable rolls, and chicken with fried rice. Everyone liked their food, but the green tea one in our group ordered was a bit nasty. The speed of service was good, & the environment was pretty good. The only thing that caused this review to be low was the waitresses attitude at the end of our meal. We asked to have the check split into 3, 2 couples & 1 individual. She was snippy saying that we needed to let her know that ahead of time. She never asked or clarified until the very end of the meal. I have lived in Annapolis for three years and I just finally made it to Tsunami. This was a perfect day for outdoor dining, on Labor Day weekend. The street was closed off during the afternoon for the First Sunday Arts Festival, and then at 5 pm, the vendors pack up and the restaurants spread out to expand their outdoor seating. I was seated by the host right away, and I ordered a beer while I waited for my friend. They brought me a frosty mug, which was a treat. We started with edamame, and then we ordered six different types of maki rolls, all of which were delicious. The service was very prompt and attentive (our server was Jenni). They are following all of the pandemic recommendations, using disposable paper menus, etc. I watched them thoroughly scrubbing down the table before seating a party behind me. I don't usually order dessert in a sushi restaurant, but we decided to try, and our choices were both fantastic. My friend ordered the brownie dessert, and I tried the banana lumpia. Two attractively presented diagonally sliced lumpia with a banana filling, served over a chocolate chip coconut ice cream. It was one of the more memorable desserts I have had in ages. I got here as soon as they opened (5:30pm on a Sunday) to take advantage of their usual half price sushi rolls on Sundays from 5:30-7. Our waitress was kind and attentive. The lighting was really low and it was hard to read the menu. There was plenty of seating inside and it seemed to be very popular because people kept rolling in until we left. We ordered our sushi with pork belly and it came out within 5 minutes of us ordering. The sushi itself did not taste that great but the pork belly was really tasty. At the end of the day, we did get the most bang for our buck. However, I don't know that I'd go back because I am a big sushi lover and that sushi was not up to par. read more

My 18 year old son and I came here for late dinner after his rained out HS football game, 8:30 Friday night. I mention this for perspective before I begin this review. Walking in - I was reminded we are not just in Annapolis - we are in the heart of college town. Very loud environment and impressive looking bar...but tonight - we were just here for a sushi dinner. So walking in this atmosphere, I realized we were definitely going to have a different experience than we are accustomed to for sushi. The name of restaurant fits though. If you've ever been to Sushi Rock in Arlington, VA - I wasn't completely discouraged, because they have loud music and amazing food and drinks. However - this place was dark inside and more of a college bar kind of feel. The laid back host found us a table around the corner in the back relatively quickly. Our friendly waitress was there quickly to offer us appetizers and drinks. We ordered edamame, water, and I got the lemon drop cocktail that I forgot the name. My son and I love sushi - but tonight - he was craving the soft shell crab roll (spider roll). Figured that would be a no brainer in the heart of blue crab Maryland. He also ordered the Kapow bowl with green chili and chicken. For me, something about the atmosphere made me hesitate to order my typical salmon sashimi or tuna tartar and Unagi Sushi. Thinking back on it - I think it was because I am used to seeing the sushi chefs preparing sushi at a sushi restaurant - which I couldn't see here. I love pork belly - so I decided to try the steamed buns pork belly. The edamame came out fast and was seasoned well and fresh enough - we were hungry - it hit the spot. The lemon cocktail wasn't too sweet and was ok. The rest of the food wasn't far behind...The spider roll came out and honestly - looked underwhelming - instead of two fried claws we are used to seeing on the end pieces of the role to each get one - there was only one end that had extra something and it was two pieces of asparagus...not crab claw. After his first bite, my son said "Wow - I guess I am spoiled with sushi - this is NOT good. I mean it's edible but...". I couldn't agree with him more. For his Kapow bowl - I encouraged him to try the green curry sauce vs teriyaki - he had never had that before. I tried a taste before he did to see if it was worth recommending - sadly it really wasn't - much more bland than I am used to, with a little kick. But fortunately - he liked it...probably helpful he had nothing to compare to. Finally - the pork belly buns - the pork belly was very good and cooked well. I like pork belly a little crispy on the outside and tender on the inside - they got this right - including the flavor. As much as I wanted to like the steamed buns - they definitely weren't fresh and in fact had a stale texture - so I saved my calories for dessert at the ice cream place down the street, and just ate the pork belly. Bottom line, if I come back on a Friday night again, it will be for a different reason - more like a pre-game happy hour edamame/pork bite kind of night. read more

Known for its sushi, I've only had drinks there. The cocktails on the menu are diverse and delicious. Try the pina de sangra! There are plenty of places around the bar or on couches to sit for a small group. A good alternative when you are looking for something a little different. read more
