First time here. Seated very quickly for a Sunday lunch. Service is excellent. Food came out very quickly. Ordered tempura shrimp. The soup and salad were excellent. I recently attended a business luncheon here and was pleasantly surprised. We sat at a Hibachi table and ordered a lunch meal prepared on it. I had shrimp and steak, along with the fried rice and vegetables. We also had giyoza and shrimp tempura as appetizers. Everything was well seasoned and delicious! I especially enjoyed the variety of seasonings and sauces on the various items prepared on the Hibachi; everything had a different flavor to it. My only suggestion is to cook the vegetables less time - they were too mushy. The decor here is really pretty and service was excellent. I definitely plan to return. read more

They do hibachi just like Tokyo grill, but Tsubaki has way more room, and is better for parties and groups. They are always coming up with new limited time sushi platters that have yet to disappoint me. Be aware that they close after lunch hours and re-open for dinner each day. read more

First and for most the style of cooking in this restaurant is Teppanyaki,not Hibachi. Though in America, Hibachi-style is used to describe the establishment and not the cooking as a Hibachi is traditionally a small bowl or box that holds coals for heating not a flattop grill as with Teppanyaki. In the 70's and 80's Hibachi Grills were a big rave, but I digress. Tsubaki is a treat for the Lufkin area and a good break from the mainstream establishments that line the local Loop. I have been there on different occasions so I have had a chance to experience the different cooks and I must say they do a pretty good job. While the atmosphere tries to be Japanese it always throws in a little East Texas Charm. I always enjoy their Filet and Chicken cooked Teppanyaki style. It is not the best I have had but it is still good. I have seafood allergies and they always accommodate for that. Overall I would recommend this place as change from the same dull corporate places down the road. read more

This is the best hibachi place I have ever eaten at and I've tried several. The chefs are always super friendly and go out of their way to make sure your get what you order. The serving staff is always on point and still do their best even when the place is packed which is often. We go their so much they don't even bring us our menus and it's always just right. This was my first time here. I had the veggie bento box & my husband had the chicken hibachi lunch. The bento box was really good! It came with tempura veggies, shrimp, crab cakes, side of fried rice (you can ask for regular white rice), and 4 small pieces of California rolls. To start, they gave you miso soup or a house salad. I loved the miso soup! I just wish there was a little more tofu in it. My husband loved the chicken hibachi lunch. However, because it was lunchtime I think the serving size was too small especially for a big guy. I might be a little biased because I grew up on Benihana in So Cal, but I was pretty bummed by the hibachi I got for lunch. I got the steak and shrimp lunch special for $13.95. I know lunch portions are smaller than regular portions, but I did not anticipate getting a scoop of fried rice, four shrimp, and maybe two ounces of steak. It came with a smattering of veggies -- a couple strips of carrot, one slice of zucchini, and a couple bites of broccoli. The steak tasted a little off, too, and the bites were so small I couldn't tell you if it was cooked the way I asked. Thankfully, I started with the gyoza which was delicious and probably more food than the hibachi meal. I think this is probably a much better stop if you're into sushi. My brother got the tropical roll, which was awesome, and he really enjoyed the rest of the sushi he got. In short, yes for sushi, look elsewhere for hibachi unless you're into teeny tiny portions. read more

I ordered takeout from here and must say it was quite delicious. I'm shocked because who would have thought such good sushi could be found in a small country town. I'm not knocking Lufkin, I was born and raised here, but admittedly I have been very reluctant to try any sushi place here. In any event, I had the vegetable fried rice, yellowtail sashimi, Philadelphia roll, and spicy tuna roll. The fried rice was every bit as good as the other reviews said it would be. It was actually some of the best fried rice I have ever had. Both rolls were fantastic! The sashimi was flavorful and melted in your mouth. The pieces were quite a bit larger than I am accustomed to, but delicious in any event. I prefer thinner sliced sashimi, but that's just a personal preference that had no bearing on the quality of fish and taste. The ONLY reason for 4 stars instead of 5 is because I didn't dine in so couldn't rate their service. However, I absolutely plan to return soon and will update my review accordingly. We went to Tsubaki tonight for my birthday. The food is usually very good here. Tonight was no exception. The food was very tasty. The problem is that it was close to 60 degrees in the restaurant so the food got cold very quickly after landing on the plate. We waited a long time( with teeth chattering) for the food to come out and for the chef to cook it on the hibachi grill. I have also been here in the summertime when it is very hot in the restaurant. They make plenty of money here and should be able to keep the building at a comfortable temperature. Freezing while trying to have a nice dinner at such a pricy place is ridiculous.
