Nacogdoches can support a true sushi restaurant, while nearby towns seem to have the off-brand of Nijiya. Literally everything on the menu is surprisingly good. The sushi is pretty good, tastes fresh, presentation is clean. The hibachi is decent, and comes with clear onion soup that is pretty tasty. Sometimes the meat from the hibachi is overcooked. One big reason that i'm a fan of this place is that it is ALWAYS clean, dining area and restrooms are always very tidy. Sometimes the service can be slow, but the last few times that i've been it has improved! They have some chef's special rolls to choose from that differ from your normal sushi menu. Been working in the area for a while now so I figured I would give this place a try. It was OK, I guess I am spoiled by my easy access to Houston sushi back home. The service was very friendly and efficient. They serve both sushi and hibachi, and have the restaurant seating divided for the two. The food was OK. I had sushi, a green salad, and a soft-shelled crab roll. The sushi was fresh, the roll was good, but nothing stellar. The salad had a watery, bland ginger dressing and was the worst part of the meal. I dunno, the food just isn't as good as I am used to. Nothing bad, but nothing great either. It looked like the vast majority of customers have rolls, I was the only person with sushi or sashimi. Since the dining options in Nac are limited, I will probably be back. read more

This is a reincarnation of Sushi Ya - now located in a strip mall. They have a pleasant space - very comfortable with a large sushi bar. The service is friendly and speedy. I tried several things - miso soup, spicy tuna roll, and a vegetable tempura roll. All were good - not exceptional, but definitely better than average. I'm happy to find a place like this in east Texas. I'm looking forward to trying out more of the menu items next time I travel to Nacogdoches. read more

I was tired of eating at another Asian restaurant in town due to a very bad experience I had there, so I decided to try Nijiya. Boy, was I not disappointed! I had the beef donburi and some of the sushi, and the beef donburi was so good, I still have dreams about it. The portions were more than enough for me, and the ambiance was nice, despite the tiny room. The only drawbacks are that it's so expensive for a college student. I know we need great restaurants around here, but I about offered to start washing dishes for them when I got the bill. The other is the wait. I have been here twice and each time I waited quite a while for my food. I hope you bring someone you like, because you're going to be staring/talking to them for a while. I imagine it's awesome for dates, but I don't consider my roommate a date. read more

I ate here on a Saturday night and sat at the sushi bar. Service was extremely slow, despite the restaurant not being busy. When I entered I stood at the hostess kiosk for 15 minutes while servers filled patrons drinks and a person standing at the cashier counter chatting with another server. Eventually I got tired of waiting to be seated so I just walked up to the bar and sat down. The sushi chef handed me a menu over the bar and someone ran up and brought me water. I ordered seaweed salad, miso soup, salmon sashimi, scallop sushi, squid sushi and two rolls -- a spicy scallop roll and a scallop crunch roll. The seaweed salad was OK but the miso soup was room temperature and appeared to have been the "dregs" because the soup filled only 1/3 of the bowl. The sashimi and sushi were tasty and fresh. The rolls were tasty as well, especially the scallop crunch roll. They apparently also offer Ramen and have habachi tables in the back. I may or may not return the next time I am in Nacogdoches. The food was good but service was clearly lacking. read more

This is honestly the best Asian restaurant in Nac. The Chef is SO nice and he cooks some amazing food, the veggie tempura is top notch. Get the yakisoba if you want some delicious authentic noodles! I love this place, I come many times a week and when I graduate college this is what I will miss the most.
