To preface my review, I just moved to California from Atlanta last November. I had been going to the exact same stylist in Atlanta for the past 8 years so it was tough for me to find someone here that I trust with my hair...even though I know my hair is pretty easy to cut because I'm a guy. Came here on a Saturday evening to get a Haircut and the end result was fantastic. I hadn't had my hair cut in about a year and was lil bit nervous coming here. But in the end I left feeling super happy. Erica was great. I showed her a picture of what I had envisioned my hair cut to be. Tsomuka is a talented artist who loves what she does. She takes her time with her clients and is extremely dedicated to her work. She welcomes everyone with a smile and is easy going while also listens to what you want. I always enjoy the time that I spend at the salon, I am able to let go of my stress and just enjoy conversation and being pampered/ taken care of. Maybe this salon is just for women??? I decided to try this hair salon on Saturday, January 14th.My appointment was with Mia (sp). Unfortunately, this was the worst haircut I can remember in the last 20 years of my life. I have a fairly ubiquitous professional cut, which was my request... however the hair stylist absolutely butchered my hair with the hair clippers. At one point the stylist stopped cutting my hair and asked for help from the nearby stylist. That stylist seemed far more competent, and confirmed my concerns with a number of critical comments regarding what Mia had done with the clippers. On the positive side of things, 1.) my hair grows quickly and 2.) I have a self sense of humor. I see that this hair salon has an excellent yelp rating so I can only assume that perhaps the focus is on women? read more

I have been following Kayla for years this is the third shop that I have followed her to. It's so exciting that this is her shop, and what's even better is that she is the only person that understands how to cut my hair. My hair is super straight so it's so important that it's cut right, after just a couple of times Kayla figured out how to cut it perfect. You know how going to the hair salon is really part therapy and part beauty? It's totally like that at Maven in Oakland. I go in, Kayla offers me a strawberry beer and a cookie--and both totally hit the spot--and we chat and laugh and I love being there. That's all outside of her doing my hair! It helps that she does a beautiful job on my hair, too. She's super capable and has fixed problems with color that others told me they couldn't--and she has made it look great. A fantastic place for men too! A usually stick with one stylist because my Asian hair and head shape can be a bit tricky. I've had rotten luck on at several salons in Alameda, but lucked into finding Kayla. At the time she was cutting my son's hair at a Better Cuts but I could tell by the care she was taking that she could be something special. I asked for a cut next and it was great. She moved to a higher end salon and of course I followed and have been with her for the past two years. I was super happy to see her open up her own salon. It's a bit of a further drive for me from Alameda to Oakland, but well worth it. If you've been having a tough time finding a great men's cut, give Kayla a try. read more

I'm on a hair journey right now, so I just went from super long middle/lower back natural color hair, to upper back caramel color, to a-cut caramel with blonde highlights. I like my hair cut very precisely and Kayla totally did that. She listened so well to what I like and don't like and got me a haircut that not only reflects what I hoped for but made it even better! I went in for a full set of highlights with Kayla and she nailed the placement and shade - super subtle babylights, just the way I like them! She's a great listener and understands exactly what you want and knows how to execute. She's also incredibly thorough and generous with her time. I have a lot of hair and it always takes more than the allotted amount of time to do a proper job - but she was happy to spend that extra time to get it just right instead of rushing me out the door. Erica has been doing my hair for at least 10 years. This past weekend I was getting some pictures done of myself and I knew my hair needed to be on point. Okay, so Kayla came recommended to me through a friend, who had just had her hair colored and it looked FABULOUS, so I decided to come in for a consultation and see what she might do. I am a brunette and usually stick to somewhat conservative yet attractive hues, and so when Kayla suggested red I was a little nervous, but she was very confident and clearly had a vision in her head, and she did my friend's hair platinum blonde, which I don't usually like but which was so amazing on her, so I decided to go for it. Needless to say I am very happy I did, my hair color is absolutely stunning, bold and yet still very professiona, I have gotten a ton of compliments, and it is clear to me that Kayla is really a phenomenal hairdresser and colorist. I try not to write negative reviews for small businesses because I know what a struggle it is to survive in the current economy and what a risk it is to the owners who often throw everything they have into the well being of the business and its representation. That being said, I have waited well over a month to write this review about my unpleasant experience at Maven, and what has prompted me to do so is how terribly my haircut has grown out from Kayla's bad haircut and lingering feelings of the even worse customer service I received. I recently relocated to CA and had a great experience at my first visit to Maven, when I saw Erica. My second visit was more difficult and unpleasant with the owner, Kayla (Erica is not there anymore). I don't know my way around the area but left home early, and my GPS navigator gave me horrible directions. I got lost (in the rain) and was (unintended) late for my 11:00 am appointment. Kayla barely addressed me when I entered the empty salon. I showed her a photo of what I wanted my hair trim to look like, requested that she leave the length around my face, and take more length off the back. When I offered to leave my haircut photo out for reference, she snipped that it would not be necessary. 5 minutes into the cut, she asked me to see it again. When I offered again to leave the photo out, she again told me no. She did exactly what I asked her NOT to do which were simple requests; she snipped the length from around my face and left length in the back. From the moment I walked in to the salon until I left was 27 minutes, which included the time I spent taking off my coat and asking where I could put my wet umbrella, wash, cut, blow dry, style and payment of $60 plus the tip I should not have given to her. She did not consult me about my hair, barely listened to my requests, and was snippy and rude. 27 MINUTES OF BAD CUSTOMER SERVICE AND NEGATIVE ATTENTION FOR $70. I left the salon feeling stunned and horrible about the cut and the way I was treated, as though I was an inconvenience unworthy of her time, all 27 minutes of it. Despite a few attempts at small talk, I don't think she cared about me at all and considered me a nuisance (based on our interaction), which reflects an inability to work in a customer service occupation. Even worse, my very simple hair trim request was not honored, there was no dialogue initiated by her regarding my hair needs and wants, and I did not feel at all good after leaving her salon. read more

Kayla is amazing! I haven't dyed my hair in years so when I decided to color it again I wanted to make sure it looked stylish but natural. Kayla did an ombré that I really loved. My hair has a lot of red and orange undertones and she was able to get it out and the ombré came out a very pretty honey color with such a nice blend. Since then I have kept coming back and have even followed kayla to her new location. She's super sweet and funny and so easy to talk to - she actually listens when I tell her things I do and do not like. She has really great customer service and highly recommend her! read more

I've never gotten my hair colored professionally and since I have black hair and have heard how tough the process is to lighten it, I was initially nervous. Kayla was amazing about answering all my questions and making me feel at ease. She is extremely knowledgable, skilled and friendly. She pays attention to details and understand colors well to make sure your hair turns out the way you want with minimal damage. She used the most up to date product that was able to lighten my hair to a blonde and silver shade in one session! Kayla is top notch in this industry and I highly recommend her, especially if you have black hair and don't want to end up with that brassy orange color. read more

He cut, texturized my hair and before I knew it, the very long hair I came in with was now a few inches below my collar bone! And I LOVE my new hair cut!
