    Tsai Grocery storefront.

Tsai Grocery is one of the best Asian grocery stores in the Ann Arbor area. The place has a Western vibe, and is very clean, without the usual odors you find in such establishments. Originally owned by the Tsai family from Taiwan for many years, until it was sold to a family from Thailand, this store has gotten better over the past 30 years they have been at the Oak Valley Centre just off I-94. Tsai Grocery's primary focus was originally on Chinese and Japanese goods. However, since the new owners purchased the place, this sphere has been expanded to include Korean, Philippine, and Thai products. That being said, they carry a full line of Kikkoman, Kimlan, and Yamasa cooking products and sauces that would make anyone who loves the taste of soy sauce happy. For those of you who love chewing gum from Japan, Tsai Grocery carries Lotte in the "Blueberry" and "Ume" flavors. Anyone who remembers Adams Sour Gum from the 1970s or 1980s, will love these vibrant flavors. In addition, they also carry Marukawa bubble gum, which comes in an assortment of flavors. Last but not least, if you like chopsticks, Tsai Grocery carries a complete assortment of Japanese Washi lacquered, and Chinese wooden varieties.

I have officially checked our every single Asian market in the area. Sped through this store and noticed that the prices were higher than others in the area. On the products you are saving $$ on, the cost is negligible with a ~$.10 difference, while the more expensive items are up to $1 higher. This isn't my favorite Asian market in the area, so probably won't be back. The store was clean and organized, didn't look at the produce much. Siracha is $2.99, there's another grocery store in the area that had it for $2.49.

Small Asian market, with enough selection for variety. Nice if you need something Asian and in the neighborhood.

They have added additional items in the store since the pandemic, including cooking items like, triangular rice molds for making onigiri, disposable chopsticks, and tableware. Likewise, the staff will go out of their way to special order some items if they are not normally carried on the shelves. The best thing is that they added a small eatery in the store called the "Korner Kitchen," which offers a very diversified menu of Japanese, Korean, and Taiwanese items.

I debated visiting the various Asian markets in the area and chose this one because of its size. I was able to find all the ingredients except for the pho spices, which I already had and had brought from home. The only downside is that all of their meat was frozen. Luckily, I was able to find fresh young hen at Whole Foods, which completed the meal.

This shop has various Indian spices , rice( basmati), lentils, tea, coffee, cooking oil, ghee and many more items. Very much like a regular grocery store. The main items though are various Bangladeshi fish (frozen) and meat. Chicken, mutton, lamb, beef are the usual items here. The owner is very friendly and understands the meat quality. They even take preorders if you have big events and need large amounts of meat or fish. They can cut the pieces as you desire. This shop have plenty of free parking space too. The only big issue it the pricing of the meat and fishes. They are quite high in comparison to the Bangladeshi stores in Hamtramck. We always buy fish and meat from Golam but recently we started to buy same items from Detroit area through our Frieda who live nearby and it costs us half the price. This is the only shop of this kind in this area so maybe the higher price is justified.

The exotic fruits like mangos and papayas are obviously shipped in, but they also offer many fruits and vegetables grown locally. Corn on the cob and bright red tomatoes from Michigan were on offer on a recent July afternoon. I have been to many ethnic groceries in the area, but this is the first where I've seen bitter melon, a common ingredient in Indian dishes, available. In addition to produce, they have a meat counter, many dried and canned beans, and an astounding array of snack mixes. Some small flies were buzzing around some of the plums in an unappetizing way, and several of the mangoes and pears were looking dried and past their peak of freshness. Other items, especially the local Michigan produce, looked really good. They were running a special on watermelons the day I stopped in.

They've got a lot of frozen goods, both savory and sweet, snacks, ice cream, heat and serve meals and ingredients galore. Plus dedicated aisles to dry goods like sauces and noodles, chips and crackers, sweets, beverages, etc. they also have a butcher counter (cannot speak to the quality of that but it looked good) and a produce section with both more traditional produce you can find in most stores in the US as well as some imported treats like pears and such. I also noticed some imported dairy aisle staples like milk (soy and otherwise), eggs (chicken and duck), and yogurt. Prices, especially for a store that mostly carries imported goods, seem pretty reasonable, though I honestly didn't end up purchasing anything (it's hot out and I wouldn't be home for a while). But now that I've been I can definitely see myself coming back again for a more dedicated shopping trip in the future.

As I perused the small but mighty aisles of the shop it became very clear to me that I know very little about African cuisine. And I'm so glad they've opened so close to me so I can visit and learn along the way. When I stepped inside I first noticed the freezer coolers to my right. They carried a variety of meats and seafood--whole fish, cut pieces, filets and more of grouper, goat, lamb, beef, poultry, snapper, crab and more. as well as frozen veggies like okra and . Not a ton of prepared foods but loads to help you make fresh meals at home. They also have a butcher counter in the back. I didn't interact with that a lot but while I was there I did see a customer get a large piece of some sort of beef cut sectioned off into smaller pieces. They also have a small selection of produce and a cooler of beverages in flavors like banana, tamarind, etc. The majority of their imported selection comes in the form of their shelves of dry goods which include a variety of grains, both in smaller portions and bulk. Rice, beans, corn flour, cassava flour, yam flour, Gari, and more fill one entire shelf. I made note of all of them and immediately looked them up when I got home to learn more. They also have pantry staples like peanut butter, spices like pepper, whole nutmeg, suya seasoning, bay leaves, mango seeds, kuka (baobab tree leaves), plus snacks like plantain chips, kola nuts, kuli kuli, etc. Big jugs of cooking oils and a fairly large selection of powdered milks, ovaltine, cream of wheat, and ground corn mixes. They also had several varieties of chalk, clay, and limestone which I was also not familiar with in an edible context but it's apparently popular amongst pregnant women for managing nausea and digestive issues. I learned so much just checking out their shelves! Of course, Africa is a huge continent with differences between the cuisines found in different countries and regions so I can't speak to if they specialize in one region more than another but it seems like they have, at the very least, many staples that can be found in homes from North to South, East to West. And if you're just learning about it all this is a great starting point.
