Your typical Chinese grocery store. I have bought rice crackers, matcha cookies, and pineapple cookies from here. We have also gotten brown rice and veggies from here as well. It's pretty big inside and has a sizable selection. One of the times we were checking out, the cashier seemed sick but I appreciated that she was wearing a mask AND gloves. It's not particularly fresh and bright feeling in there but they fit a lot of product in there! I had never stopped in before today and I was surprised to see such a selection. They've got a lot of frozen goods, both savory and sweet, snacks, ice cream, heat and serve meals and ingredients galore. Plus dedicated aisles to dry goods like sauces and noodles, chips and crackers, sweets, beverages, etc. they also have a butcher counter (cannot speak to the quality of that but it looked good) and a produce section with both more traditional produce you can find in most stores in the US as well as some imported treats like pears and such. I also noticed some imported dairy aisle staples like milk (soy and otherwise), eggs (chicken and duck), and yogurt. Prices, especially for a store that mostly carries imported goods, seem pretty reasonable, though I honestly didn't end up purchasing anything (it's hot out and I wouldn't be home for a while). But now that I've been I can definitely see myself coming back again for a more dedicated shopping trip in the future. read more

Way 1 is the main Chinese supermarket in Ann Arbor. The vegetables look clean and fresh. There are a lot of snacks and canned food. Even household and toiletry items can be found in the back of the store. Some drawbacks include higher prices than Hua Xing Asia Market in Ypsilanti. Hua Xing is much larger. The service here could be better, although rude service is also common at other supermarkets like Hua Xing and 168 in Madison Heights. Way 1 is not the best Chinese supermarket, but if you're a student, this is a convenient place to buy Asian groceries near the University of Michigan's North Campus. If you have a car and time, go to Hua Xing for a wider variety of produce at lower prices. read more

Way 1 Supermarket simultaneous fills me with shame and joy because it reminds me of growing up & home, but it's kind of run down & the service is awful. However, they carry my favorite dry noodles, have the LONGEST shelves of product, and they have quite the assortment of produce! For instance, I found some sauces that I had previously bought on Amazon because I didn't think I could find it in Ann Arbor. It's also in a strip mall/plaza with Yoon's Bakery so getting a carb fix too. read more

I stopped in here during Chinese new years and was pleasantly surprised to find all the hotpot ingredients I would need for that evenings dinner! From beef/pork/fish balls with and without roe, to frozen sliced hot pot meat (lamb included!), hot pot soup base, a wide variety of veggies and mushrooms , all the sauces you would need. So far this is the most well stocked Asian market I've found, though its definitely a Chinese centric one and not the "nicest" in the sense of modernity and aesthetics but it gets the job done in a town that doesn't have a bigger market from a national chain. All in all I think way 1 is going to be my go from now on for Asian grocery needs! read more

This supermarket is only for maximize its profit, do not care whether the food they sell are good or not. In the past, we bought meat and fish that smell really bad when we opened the package. Here is another example, the oranges we bought looks great from outside but many have some kind of diseases make them not eatable as shown in the pictures. I am really pissed off! read more

I am a regular here and am grateful a grocery store like this exists in Ann Arbor as they carry many ingredients I like to cook with that other stores in the area like Kroger and Meijer do not carry. I like to regularly restock here on Shin ramen, hot pot ingredients, bok choy, mushrooms, instant porridges, sauces, teas, snacks, and dumplings. Sometimes their products are expired or near expiring, so I would do a quick check of the expiration date before heading to check out. I would also recommend going at an off hour as it can be frustrating not being able to easily social distance in line when the store gets crowded. read more

I usually go to this store because it's nearby and has the Asian groceries I need at cheaper prices than Busch's and Kroger. That being said 1) yes, it's dingy; 2) it does smell, but not terribly, and 3) they need to stop storing the rice cakes for tteokbokki in the freezer, especially if they're not expired. Every time I inspect the packs they're cracking apart, which is a bad sign. The service has never been stellar. Once in a blue moon you'll get a friendly cashier, most of the time you'll get a civil one, and also you'll find out a checkout lane has closed right when you get up to it and the cashier shoves a sign at you reading "CLOSED" and points you over to the next lane. The store could use a better communication system so that customers know to move to another checkout lane before getting in one that looks open, because to me the current setup is frustrating and irritating. But at least when I went this time checkout lanes were running, instead of just having one open with the line extending all the way back into the produce section. TL;DR: the store, more likely than not, has what you need if you're buying Asian groceries. but since it's been around for a long time (nearly 40 years, I think), there doesn't seem to be much incentive to improve customer service, which is a huge shame if you ask me. I suspect that would change if Kroger expanded its inventory (I know I would change over if that was the case). read more

I've been a regular at Way 1 for two years (approximately three - four visits each week). Before reviewing let's revisit some assumptions about this, and similar, markets: + Some sh*t is soon to be expired (or already expired!) on the shelf. Check carefully before buying. + Produce is hit and miss, fresh on some days and wilted on others. Caveat emptor. As these assumptions go, Way 1 is just one of the gang. So let's agree to look past them for now and review based on more distinctive criteria. 1) Way 1 staff are friendly and helpful. You may need to make some effort to politely get their attention, though. 2) The product selection is excellent for little ol' Ann Arbor. Very thankful for that. 3) Without mentioning other local stores by name, I'm of the opinion that Way 1 prices are competitive with the several others I've shopped. 4) You can get fresh 茶蛋 (tea egg) if you ask at the register. So cool. (Occasionally they're not salty enough, though. That's easy to fix.) 5) The 鸭脖子 (duck neck) is super yummy if you like that kind of thing. Good luck with that, though. In spite of my frequent requests to 老板 to order more, they're usually sold out! Anyway, that's it. Love this place. They've made my time in Ann Arbor a whole lot more pleasant just by being there. read more

Updating my review to add in more photos and to bump up my review a star. I'm beginning to appreciate their wide selection more and more, the longer I stay in the US. See my pictures for some of my finds today. You should also look out for the excellent Rosewood slightly sweet soy milk in the fridge section, that's an Ann Arbor product! The problem with the huge selection though, is that it can sometimes be difficult to find an item again, if you tried and liked it the previous time. Also, this place is great for getting Chinese porcelain dishes! They have such a range at the shelves near the back. They have other household goods at the back shelves and at the furthest corner too. Rice cooker, anyone? They still have the same issues as before though, and just a tip - you can only pay with card if your order is above $10. AMEX is not accepted. read more

Way 1 market is an Asian store where you can find many products and ingredients from Asia such as Chinese, Japanese, Korean, and South Asia food, such as variety of soy sauce, rice, canned food, spices, frozen food, meat department, etc. Fresh Asian vegetables are my favorite, and the price is inexpensive. After working hours and weekend would be very busy. Hard to find parking space, and the waiting time to check out would be very long. Staff speaks some English and friendly. A well stocked store with an organized wide selection of dried goods, produce, meats, sauces, and spices. There's also a little section past the butcher's counter filled with household items such as plastic chairs, sponges, soaps, brooms, etc. This store is great because they have specific items you cannot find at Krogers or a typical none Asian grocery store. Downside, hence the 2 star, there's always bad customer service. Also, be prepared to have the rude cashier tell you to bag your own groceries. read more

The most important thing is that as a Filipina, they have the proper lumpia wrappers! I can't speak to any other Asian goodies, but it appears just as great as the other Asian supermarkets I'm used to. Also, I didn't realize there are so many varieties of matcha-flavored​ snacks. The only negative I have is that every time I've gone here, it seems like there's only one cashier lane open with a long line. read more

There used to be an Asian store at Plymouth Road Mall ... way in the back. It had extremely narrow aisles and appeared to be a bit jumbled. Since then, the store has moved to a prominent location at the front of the mall, and was able to expand its offerings. This is a very complete grocery, with produce, meat, canned and preserved foods, and cooking utensils. There is a nice representation of all Asian cuisines. The veggies were very fresh and there was a huge variety. I got three kinds of greens. There were oyster mushrooms, tree ears and king mushrooms. King mushrooms are like giant oyster mushrooms. Just use them like any other mushroom, but if the pieces are cut into huge planks, allow a little more cooking time. Yum. Don't be afraid to try them. They had some seeds for Asian veggies like bok-choi and all those other -chois. My order came to $16 and they let me use my credit card, so I think the $20 minimum is no longer in effect. read more

I started coming here a couple years ago, after buying a Chinese cookbook and deciding to try a new cuisine. It's weird to call a trip to the grocery store "delightful," but honestly it was a wonderful experience. I loved taking my time to go through the aisles and look at all the new and unusual items. One thing I particularly like about Way 1 which is different from other markets I've been to is that they are particularly meticulous in labeling things in multiple languages. I can usually tell what it is I'm looking at on the aisle shelves. Of course, finding ingredients is still an adventure, but people there are very helpful and friendly. My first time there I was clearly lost, and another customer kindly asked what I needed and then asked one of the workers at the store for me and they both helped me find it. My most recent time there I asked one of the grocery workers for help, and she waved down a customer, and between the three of us, Google Translate, and pulling up pictures on my phone, we managed to find the thing I needed. Every time I've been in the store it's been well-lit and clean. Definitely my #1 go-to in the area when looking for Asian ingredients, and it's helpful that Kroger is just across the street to pick up any other items that I may need. read more

Below are some of my family's experiences in this store: 1) Sometimes we noticed that the price tag on products did NOT match the receipt. I've actually corrected/questioned on some occasions on the spot to the cashier, she accused me of changing the price tag instead... speechless. 2) One time we weighted the same produce twice, and the scale and price came back drastically different. Not sure how to explain this... 3) One time after paying for all my groceries, before walking out of the store I decided to return it. They gave me a printed slip for store credit when my original payment was credit card... How is this legal?!?! I paid with credit card, they can't just return it back and instead gave me a printed slip for store credit that I can't make purchases anywhere else, and if I'm lucky enough not to lose the slip for next trip." This new incident happened to my mom yesterday (5/15/22) while shopping there: The meat she bought was marked at a lower price (difference of about $1.40) on the shelf than what it scanned at check out. She spoke up after studying the receipt and afterwards walked to that same shelf and confirmed with store staff again the price is what my mom thought it was. So my mom wanted the price difference returned. The store manager came and made up an excuse by saying they haven't had a chance to update the price on the shelf yet to match their system at check out. But my mom said that's not her fault and they should honor what it was marked still on the shelf, Kroger and other grocery businesses never have this issue. The manager said, "They are American-owned businesses." This just made us so mad. After further argument, the manager let my mom get something that would make up the price difference in the store. My mom didn't have anything else to buy so without wasting more time she decided to pick up some bananas for the price difference. This is not about that $1.40 price difference, but it's about principle and doing honest business. A lot of Asian international students shop there, and this business is taking advance of them. Probably the best stocked asian grocery store in ann arbor... they have a lot of good options for things. Like many have said the customer service is what it is... but you should try going to an asian grocery store in a big city, it would make this place look good. I would come here pretty regularly for all things, if you buy veggies though make sure you cook them in a couple of days. They buy lower grade products so they can sell them to you cheaper but they also expire faster. read more

Prior to the store moving here, they used to be inside the little strip mall... I like that they taken over this location and expanded on their offering. I like the spacious aisle and the offerings they have at this store. One sad note, since moving to this location, they stopped carrying Korean beers... they had the cheapest Korean beers in town. When I'm here though, I typically purchase the dumplings , Chinese sauces and Korean products. If you need something to make your favorite Chinese dish, then they will have the ingredients that you'll need! Cashier's are nice, if I lived on this side of town, this place would be my go to Asian store. read more

The place is great for your Asian grocery needs. It expanded into the store next to it in the last year. The butcher/meat section is good. They carry an enormous array of frozen dumplings. The Kroger across the street started carrying legit Asian foods in their frozen section, I imagine to compete with this place. My only quarry is they sometimes don't carry regular melon flavored Melona bars (but they have random flavored Melona bars). read more

This is a great super market for all your Chinese needs- with lots of Korean products too. They have frozen dumplings, more dumplings, buns, and more buns. So- yes I am a fan. There is some fresh veggies, fruits, and a meat/fish tank section too. There is also a section of plastic asian cups and supplies. Great Asian super market in the area. I think it would be unfair to compare it to 99 ranch, but for sure its one of my fav in the AA area. I have been on a search for my Chinese veggies since moving from Houston, and finally on a special day after barre class I found a place that sells fresh You choy and a great variety other veggies. Also, the prices are very reasonable and there are also a ton of sauces and frozen food that reminds me of home. Way 1 Supermarket, for those who don't know, used to exist as China Market inside this strip mall plaza. Back then, the space was super cramped because of the sheer volume of product, plus it was dark and not presented really well. It is what you would expect from a typical Asian supermarket. Fast forward, now the space is AWESOMELY HUGE. Bright, airy, spacious, all the things you need for a pleasant shopping experience! lol :) The layout is simple: upon entrance, you will find most of their fresh produce to the left, and as you walk towards the right, each aisle is lined with rows and rows of sauces, noodles, spice mixes, junk food, the works! Towards the very end of the market, you will find a large assortment of frozen foods like dumplings, pancakes, breads, pastries. They have a great selection of meats and seafood, though I didn't buy any. Housewares galore, so you could realistically make this a one stop shop. If you are looking for rice, they have piles of rice brands that will fit your needs: Japanese, Chinese Jasmine, Korean, everything! The cashiers are dry as sandpaper and lack personality, but hey, don't let that affect your experience. Just go in with the mindset: get in and get out. I'm happy that China Market finally found a good spacious spot to house all their products. It is still overwhelming as how much stuff there is, but at least, now the layout is conducive to allowance in taking your time to peruse. read more

Once you get past the crazy parking situation all I can say is WOW. I've been trying to find an asian supermarket that rivals the Super H Mart in NOVA and I think I have found a good contender (for this area). It's brightly lit up and the food is nicely stacked on the shelves in some resemblance of order. It may not be as big as Hua Xing Market but it definitely gives off a cleaner vibe. I still wouldn't buy my meat from an asian grocer but everything else seems legit. Cheap vegetables, cheap rice, cheap tofu, and they even have sales where the food isn't close/past expiration date! I only wish this Korean market would take a page out of an H mart and truly then this place can get 5 stars from me.. wishful thinking BUT I would definitely go out of my way to come here again. Way 1 is a pretty standard Chinese supermarket with your usual assortment of meats, produce, and all those herbs and spices and sauces that you can't find anywhere else but an Asian market. The selection is pretty good in that it has vinegar and soy sauce and chili oils and so on that I'm used to. In addition, it has lots of vegetable and meat options that you won't find in a place like Kroger, like pork belly and purple amaranth and pea shoots. Prices are excellent. I've found the staff to be very friendly, if you can find someone (see below). I'm Chinese, for what it's worth. My biggest complaint, and this is a major complaint, is with staffing. It's hard to find someone if you have a question about where something is located or whatever. Also, the checkout line is generally long since there's almost never more than one cashier at a time. It's rather painful during busy hours. Still, you can find pretty much anything you need here, and I don't think there is a better alternative on this side of town. read more

Beware of expiration dates!!!! In general, don't buy products from China and Taiwan and any Asian countries. Buy Made/produced in USA, Japan and Korea. You must read prints in the back of packages. Don't be fooled by "distributed ...." Also, pay attention to cashier itemized sales slip and items you purchased. Certainly, they can improve their organization of food much better! This place is slightly better than Hua Xing. Location is good but parking wise, it depends on your luck. Try to avoid peak hours like 5pm-6pm or Saturday afternoon. I have found several expired goods on the shelf so please check before u pay. Also, if you're planning to buy fresh meat, go at least 1hour before they close (8pm?) otherwise you'll need to hear incessant complaints from the butcher about how she has already washed her equipment (Asian lady butcher, not the Mexican guy. This yelper finds himself going to the other side of town, especially in winter, for the produce section of this large, though always Beijing in winter like store: cold inside. If you know what you want and what the package looks like, you'll be in luck. If not better brush up on your Mandarin. In addition to the market, the meat and fish counters boast a wide selection of Asian cuts. Now back to produce---try out the packages of pea sprouts---great fresh or cooked. Long beans, many fresh mushrooms, great humongous apples find themselves with lower than expected price tags. Way to go Way 1. Lots of easy parking make this a regular stopping point when gathering the week's supplies! I'd give it 5 stars were it not for the language issues encountered in the internal frostiness of the places. read more

Although I appreciate their selection of Chinese and Korean grocery items, I had a very negative customer service experience recently. I purchased a bamboo steamer insert for $15, and because it was large it was not bagged when proceeding through the checkout but rather kept loose at the end of the aisle. I ended up leaving the store without the steamer. When I returned, there was no record of the item having been left and returned to the shelf. I showed them my receipt, described my recent visit, and essentially pleaded my case, to no avail. They would not offer to replace the item with an identical one even though it was pretty obvious I was not making up the details of the forgotten item. So, I was out $15, made two pain in the ass trips to the store, and came away steamer basket-less. I realize giving me a replacement would have required a modicum of trust by the store, but it was very apparent I was not making up the story, and they were not going to extend me any amount of trust. Further, even after taking my name and indicating a manager would contact me, I was not contacted. Other issues: the back right corner of the store near the butcher counter always smells nasty, the store does not seem particularly clean, and the checkout line is often long and inconvenient. I will be taking my Asian grocery needs elsewhere as there are other cleaner, more modern options in the area. Disappointing. read more

I'm making a variety of Asian dishes for dinner this week, and my go-to Kroger has a scant selection of Asian products so I decided to stop into Way 1 last night. The store is huge and sells a large variety of goods, from veggies, snacks, noodles, etc. I was actually impressed with the variety. However, for some reason there were many people in the store, and needing to check out, but they only have one register open. TLDR: save yourself the trouble and go to Galleria on Packard. I came here today with a friend who was looking for some dried seaweed. She doesn't speak any Mandarin so she asked one of the employees, in English, where they stocked their seaweed. He clearly didn't understand anything she was saying so he asked another guy to come over. At this point, I decided to step in to try and help since this was clearly going nowhere. So I said to the second guy in Mandarin, "do you have..." and then I blanked on the word seaweed so I tried to say it in Cantonese since Mandarin speakers sometimes understand Cantonese and vice versa. Well before I could utter another word, this guy cuts me off and says in Mandarin "WHAT DID YOU SAY?" with the most uncalled for attitude. I repeated myself louder this time and with a look of annoyance and disgust this guy says to me "what are you saying?? I can't understand you. You can't even speak clearly" and proceeds to ignore me and WALK AWAY. Da fuq? And on this same blessed day, there were 3 employees today who were restocking the freezers and they just littered the aisles with empty boxes. And when I mean littered, I mean I couldn't even push my cart past them. Which brings me to another point-- if you see customers having a bit of trouble navigating the aisles because of a mess YOU made, wouldn't you at least quickly move the boxes aside to clear some space? Do at least SOMETHING, won't you? And lastly, as somebody else has already mentioned, why do they only open a max of 2 registers at a time when they have 3 registers and a slew of people trying to pay? And also, if you're going to be extra slow about everything, can you at least make sure your conveyor belts are working? I went there maybe a week ago and the belts were not working so everybody had to push up their stuff manually, which is fine, since I understand that technology malfunctions sometimes. But what I don't understand is how I went back today, a whole week later, and to a different register, that this conveyor belt was not working either? This is ridiculous. If something is malfunctioning, FIX. IT. Management needs to step up their game because if they continue with this shit show, they will soon be out of customers. read more

As much as I hate going to this grocery store, I don't really have a choice if Hua xing does not have what I am looking for since they are the closest Asian stores I can go to in washtenaw county. The place is quite dirty knowing there is covid going around, floors looks like it has never been mopped since this place opened, the lines to the cashier is too long since they only have 1 cashier, the actual prices are different from the advertised tags so beware and what I hated the most is the one and only guy cashier who I'm not sure if he's the owner or the son of the owner who is very rude! Customers would say thank you or hi to him and pretend to not hear it! On top of that, he would slam all your groceries like they are trash.I'm sure these people atleast know the word "thank you" after all the years they've been living here in the US so there is no excuse to that! This guy is there everyday, hard to miss him and I'm really hoping for a time that I go there that he's off! read more

Beware of the operation! They're not very honest people... A lot of times, the price on the items don't reflect the price at the cashier. Also, a lot of things on the shelves are expired. You have to make sure and check it yourselves when you purchase from them. I also saw some packaged cucumbers that are rotten! I've seen them selling chocolate bars without the outer box (it's still wrapped in the inner foil wrapper thing) at a discounted price, and I suspect that they're expired, with the dates written on the box, so they got the contents out of the boxes and sell at a lower price, to get rid of the inventory. Just be very very careful when you shop there... They're just not the most honest people, who care about their customers' well being.... read more
