The entrance to August Chinese Market.

Anyone who has grown up in the Canton Township, western Wayne County area will remember Koyama Shoten, which was a Japanese grocery and small book store that was in nearby Livonia. Sadly, that business is now closed after the owners retired. This Chinese marketplace fills the void left by this place very nicely. While the August Chinese Supermarket is not the largest by any stretch of the imagination, it more than makes up for it's smallness by being very well organized, and the owners clearly know what they have, and are willing to special order any items they don't carry on a regular basis. Anyone who's been in other Asian markets will immediately notice the lack of any smell or foul odors in this place, which was really surprising to say the least. This is a sign of how clean the place really is. August Chinese Supermarket carries a lot of different types of soy sauces that won't find in regular outlets like Kroger's or Walmart. They even carry Tempura dipping sauces, which really surprised me. When it comes to brand selection, they even handle Yamasa Soy Sauce that has been brewed since 1645 in Japan. The part I really like about this establishment is they have a balance of of Chinese, Korean, Philippine, and Japanese products. In fact, they also carry chopsticks, including the stainless steel Korean variety. So if you're looking to expand your culinary skills in the Far East, this is a great place to find what you need.

Great store, nice owners, and a good sized selection of essential Asian products. Whether you're Chinese, Filipino, Japanese, or any kind of Asian, I'm sure you'll be able to find most essential products in this store. Can be a bit pricier than some Asian markets I've been to, but it's nice and clean, well organized, and the workers are super nice. One time the cashier lady saw me having a hard time carrying this 30 pound bag of rice (I had just tweaked my back somehow earlier that day), and she, without me asking I should add, carried it to my truck for me! How nice is that?!

Excellent selections. Very fresh Asian vegetables that are not found in many supermarkets. We will go back there a lot from now on.

Market is small, no fresh meat or seafood only frozen. Prices are a little high and wish they had a bigger selection.

This place is very large and has a vast selection of items to choose from. If you love rice like I do, there are two aisles filled with various types of rice that will truly accent any dish you like to cook. Likewise, there is a wide selection of Chinese oyster and soy sauces to chose from that will take your cooking to the next level. However, if you're more into Japanese and Korean foods, then you will find this marketplace rather limited. On the other hand, If you're looking for Asian cookware such as bowls, pots, pans, and woks, you'll love the selection they offer at this market. If you feel a little lost, just ask for help. The workers helped me find some kitchenware items I was interested in, and they provided great service. For someone who is a newbie to Asian food or cooking, the atmosphere in this market can be a little intimidating at first. You may want bring a friend or two with you to help sort through this culinary jungle. However, it will be one of the best adventures of your life.
