Party Platter Mix of Colorful Varenyky

Best borscht & kompot in the city - that is the bottom line. In all seriousness, amazing Ukrainian spot with all the classic dishes you'd need. The inside is beautifully decorated with culture, and service was great. Need to come back to try their Wheel of Fun!

Apple Strudel

Food was excellent, cannot wait to add this to my rotation of restaurants for the winter. So hearty and rich in the best way. We started with the wheel of fun, which included 4 spirits of our choosing (cucumber dill, beet tangerine, horseradish, and wild blueberry basil). Had the pickled veggies (mushrooms and tomatoes were especially standout). Chicken kyiv was savory and herbaceous. Beef goulash was hearty and meaty. New style banosh was ordered by my friend who is a vegetarian and wow I was impressed. Crispy on the outside with creamy polenta on the inside covered in a mushroom sauce. Finished the night off with apple strudel which was not too sweet and flaky. Perfect nightcap. Service was excellent and I'm already looking forward to going back!

Fun and authentic. Appeals to American taste while truly unique. Pastas are homemade and excellent. Varenyka Filled with potato and cheese or topped with onion. Service was efficient but newbys and uninitiated not the focus. Artwork and history here too

For a unique dining experience in a beautifully decorated restaurant look no further than Tryzub Ukrainian Kitchen. The staff is incredible and fun, the food is delicious, and the ambiance is quite pleasant. In terms of dishes, we tried the Carpathian wild mushroom soup with black truffle oil, cabbage rolls, crispy potato pancakes, and the colorful party platter, which comes with an assortment of pierogis. The party platter was my personal favorite. They have many tasty cocktails, infused spirits, and mocktails to choose from. The Glory to Ukraine shot is delicious and highly recommended. The restaurant has plenty of seating indoors and an outdoor patio that is perfect for enjoying nice weather.

Fantastic restaurant in Ukrainian Village. Authentic Ukrainian food, drinks, decor. Kind, efficient staff. Cool ambiance. My boyfriend and I very much enjoyed our meal, atmosphere was fantastic and I'm looking forward to exploring more Ukrainian dishes and culture. Absolutely a must visit in the city and a great way to explore the beautiful cultures the city has to offer.

This Ukrainian restaurant is definitely worth visiting. Once you visit, you'll want to come back again and again. The decor is beautiful, and the food is delicious. I recommend the borshch or mushroom soup, varenyky, and the meat platter appetizer.

Super circular potato pancakes...mushroom sauce (not mustard!) is the tits.

Updated review! Came for our anniversary and had a delightfully delicious time! I don't drink alcohol but I was supremely excited when I convinced our waiter, Dima, to serve us the wheel of fun with berry compote and uzvar -- which is a spiced dried fruit juice that tastes like a campfire. It's cold but intriguing. Though I might not order it a second time, I was glad to try it and a single serving is only $5 that they split into 4 shots. The wheel of fun honestly made my night! And the berry compote carafe is definitely worth $15. We had the party platter of varenyky and substituted the red beef ones for more potato ones. But next time I really want more orange pork varenyky! They're sweet and savory and I was reluctant to share the 4 on the plate! We also had barosh (polenta balls) and the potato pancakes (super circular!), which, much like my previous review, were a hit! The mushroom sauce that comes with both is just soooo good. I love mushrooms, know why? Cause I'm a FUN guy. Circular foods, circular drinks, all come full circle. And I will come again, the next special occasion I have. Quite a delight on a Friday night! And surprisingly they were not too busy and the twinkle lights and the Christmas tree outside really made it feel cozy and special.

Now this was an experience! Delicious cocktails, authentic Ukrainian appetizers presented artistically, and hearty, exquisite and piping-hot mains. The service was excellent - friendly, informative and kind. The environment is whimsical and tasteful. It gives that Eastern European "going out tonight" vibe. Tryzub feels like vacation, with Ukrainian culture permeating every delicious course.

I just realized the last time I wrote a review here was 7 years ago. In that time, I've been back at least 30 times, and it's one of my most favorite restaurants in the US. Honestly, I'd eat here every day if I could. Everything is phenomenal here. Literally. I don't typically care for sauerkraut: love there's. I avoid stuffed cabbage: am obsessed with theirs. Just come here and order one of everything off the menu and thank me later. Also be sure to dine here at night, the red lighting is a vibe. The service is some of the best as well, so if you're visiting Chicago, go here.

When I stepped into Tryzub, I felt like I was back in my Lviv. The restaurant was beautifully adorned with Ukrainian relics, books about Ukraine, and magical string lighting. The ceilings were a marvel to look at and the corner of the room was painted with a mural of Lviv's center. We had made a reservation as it was my birthday and Easter weekend. It was a good thing we did, because Tryzub was fully packed. When we got there, we checked in and were promptly seated. Our waitress, Vasylyna, took great care of us and I loved how I was able to order in Ukrainian. As far as the food, everything was delicious and tasted like back at home in Ukraine. I had the Chicken Kiev and my better half had the goulash. You cannot go wrong with either dish. For drinks, we had the kompot, a sour cherry infused spirit (which our waitress brought for me as a birthday gift), and a light Ukrainian beer. I really liked the infused spirit, and I loved the range of flavors that they have of these. Even though the restaurant was a 25 minute Uber ride from our hotel, we are so glad that we came here. My birthday celebration was complete at Tryzub and a special thank you to Vasylyna who made it even more special!!

I LOVE THIS PLACE! Went in without any expectations after stumbling upon it. I was jarred the moment I saw the interior. Super eccentric, colorful, the kind of place you would want to sit in for hours. Be sure to bring someone you like because you will not want to leave!! I got the pierogi platter, which upon presentation alone had me bouncing in my seat. The four flavors served were potato and onion (yellow), beef (red), sauerkraut (green) and pork (orange). They were all DELISH, my friend and I were absolutely floored by the beef. It was seasoned sooo well, I genuinely could have eaten a bowl of just the beef. We also had the honey cake, the PERFECT balance of sweetness, so airy and light and pillowy. GIVE THESE PEOPLE SOME LOVE!!!!! THEY'RE SMASHING IT!!!

Hand made Potato&Cheese Varenyky Pirogie . Good but they put diced red paprika, it's should not be there ...

Another visit. Ordered Borch and Pierogie Very good. Will order it again, only Pierogie should not be on it ...

Tricky combo: could I get something that is both vegetarian and gluten-free?

Most all of the menu can be viewed as gluten free. You can get the borscht without the pork on request. The potato pancakes and veg cakes can be done with potato starch - I would just ask. The vereneky/pierogi are not going to be gluten free because…

Most of the food we ordered was pale and underseasoned - if that's the tradition, I'm sorry for Ukrainians. The lard assortment - the Ukrainian board - was unexpectedly excellent, though the sport peppers were undoubtedly added to please American palates. Points for simply trying: this is not a cuisine you find on every corner, and the effort is real. But the vareniki (a.k.a. pierogi to Poles) were store-freezer quality, one kind dyed an alarming charcoal black for no obvious reason. Then the service. Two of the dishes we ordered weren't available. The mains arrived before the appetizers - and arrived lukewarm. Our waiter gave the impression he'd rather be anywhere else. The room doesn't help: it's set up like a banquet hall, bandstand and dance floor included, dressed for a wedding party. The crowd was mostly Ukrainian, which is the one honest endorsement here. And then the bill. A 3% credit-card fee, never disclosed until the check arrived - not on the menu, not a word from the waiter, just there at the end like a parting gift. That's not a gray area: Visa and Mastercard both require a surcharge to be disclosed before you pay, and it can't exceed the merchant's actual processing cost. Springing it on the receipt breaks the rules they agreed to when they started taking cards. If you're going to charge it, post it before I order, not after - the sleight of hand colors everything else. Two stars. One of them is entirely for the lard.

The Food: Marinated Mushrooms (white wine, mustard seed): Hands down my favorite dish! Packed with incredible flavor. Trout Roe Tart (chive cream cheese, fresh wasabi): Delicious! Loved the fresh pop of the trout roe paired with the tangy cream cheese. Potato Pancakes (sea buckthorn jam, feta): Really good--perfect texture with a great balance of savory and sweet. Holubtsi (short-rib stuffed cabbage rolls, pearl barley, tomato demi-glace): Tender, flavorful, and cooked perfectly. Varenyky (sauerkraut-filled dumplings, chanterelles, walnut-mushroom sauce): A tasty, classic dish. Crayfish Deviled Eggs: Good flavor, though the crayfish portion felt smaller than pictured online and they were a bit heavy on the filling. Pampushky (Ukrainian garlic bread): Decent, but slightly denser and less soft than expected. Salo (cured pork lardo, garlic): A bit disappointing--mostly fat without much depth of flavor. Chicken Kyiv & Pork Ribs: Both proteins were noticeably dry and relied heavily on their sauces (though the apricot glaze on the ribs was very tasty). Dessert: We tried both the Napoleon and the Medovyk (honey cake). The Napoleon was the standout winner--crisp, balanced, and delicious! One final thing I just had to say, the price of 1 small bottle of Diet Coke was $7, I think that's highway robbery!

I grew up in the Ukrainian Village living in Portage Park for 30 yrs. We shared every plate and enjoyed a beautiful tour of Ukrainian comfort food done right. My Ukrainian mom who still cooks many traditional dishes (especially amazing varenyky/pierogi), so my daughter has grown up eating her Babcia's versions at home. She wanted to experience those same dishes prepared outside our family kitchen -- and this restaurant absolutely delivered. We shared the potato and cheese varenyky, holubtsi (cabbage rolls), mushroom broth soup, deruny (potato pancakes), and finished with sweet cheese crepes for dessert. Every single dish was delicious -- comforting, flavorful, and clearly made with care and tradition in mind. We ate until we were well beyond full and loved every bite. It felt like a taste of home, but also something new for the both of us, and that made the experience even more meaningful. This will absolutely be a must-revisit the next time we're back in Chicago visiting my mom. Highly recommend for anyone looking for authentic, soul-warming Ukrainian food. The dining area decor is very low key with decor found in most Ukrainian homes. Ukrainian dance music played bringing memories of weddings and dancing polkas.

But what other word exists for capably made Ukranian food? It is comfort food qua comfort food. The Platonic ideal of such. Savory in the extreme with more subtle notes of sweet and tart. On a previous trip to Chicago I lodged in a neighborhood bordering Ukraine Village. The proximity allowed me to sample a few establishments from the Ukraine. Things were fine; nothing extraordinary. On this more recent trip, I braved an excursion to the western suburbs, just for the Magic Jug. A food blogger named Hammond said it's the best. He did not lie. So it's in the occidental hinterlands of the city. And yet, my fellow diners were all from the Ukraine. So Ukranian, in fact, they all spoke the mother tongue. Besides that, the surroundings were not particularly Slavic. Minimalist pinewood interior makes you think moreso of Japan and less so of the Eastern Bloc. But anyhow. The chief feature that makes it so good is that everything is seasoned and flavored perfectly. The cooks - all from the Ukraine and all women - each possess palates with sniper rifle precision. The pelmeni (stuffed dumplings of similar appearance to tortellini). So beefy. So oniony. And finished with an herbaceous garlicky seasoning. The golubtsi (stuffed cabbage) at Magic Jug is without it's usually tomato sauce, giving you breathing room to really basque in the chicken broth in which the rice and veg were cooked. The effect: think a reconstructed chicken noodle soup - only with a fat dollop of smetana (sour cream). And the stewed liver. Really like a liver Diane. Don't be a wuss, eat the liver. Get it with mashed potatoes. I had mine with buckwheat so you don't have to. They also have several selections of house made bread. I ordered the one that's like a pull-apart brioche. Too full to appreciate it from on a visceral level, I was still able to note the craft involved. Within it, there contained the balancing act of well developed gluten and pliant interior.

The pierogies were shaped quite like some Chinese dumplings I've had, but the filling was unmistakably Polish. The stuffed cabbage had a generous amount of meat and came in a hearty tomato broth.
