I just realized the last time I wrote a review here was 7 years ago. In that time, I've been back at least 30 times, and it's one of my most favorite restaurants in the US. Honestly, I'd eat here every day if I could. Everything is phenomenal here. Literally. I don't typically care for sauerkraut: love there's. I avoid stuffed cabbage: am obsessed with theirs. Just come here and order one of everything off the menu and thank me later. Also be sure to dine here at night, the red lighting is a vibe. The service is some of the best as well, so if you're visiting Chicago, go here.

Now this was an experience! Delicious cocktails, authentic Ukrainian appetizers presented artistically, and hearty, exquisite and piping-hot mains. The service was excellent - friendly, informative and kind. The environment is whimsical and tasteful. It gives that Eastern European "going out tonight" vibe. Tryzub feels like vacation, with Ukrainian culture permeating every delicious course.

Hand made Potato&Cheese Varenyky Pirogie . Good but they put diced red paprika, it's should not be there ...

Another visit. Ordered Borch and Pierogie Very good. Will order it again, only Pierogie should not be on it ...

When I stepped into Tryzub, I felt like I was back in my Lviv. The restaurant was beautifully adorned with Ukrainian relics, books about Ukraine, and magical string lighting. The ceilings were a marvel to look at and the corner of the room was painted with a mural of Lviv's center. We had made a reservation as it was my birthday and Easter weekend. It was a good thing we did, because Tryzub was fully packed. When we got there, we checked in and were promptly seated. Our waitress, Vasylyna, took great care of us and I loved how I was able to order in Ukrainian. As far as the food, everything was delicious and tasted like back at home in Ukraine. I had the Chicken Kiev and my better half had the goulash. You cannot go wrong with either dish. For drinks, we had the kompot, a sour cherry infused spirit (which our waitress brought for me as a birthday gift), and a light Ukrainian beer. I really liked the infused spirit, and I loved the range of flavors that they have of these. Even though the restaurant was a 25 minute Uber ride from our hotel, we are so glad that we came here. My birthday celebration was complete at Tryzub and a special thank you to Vasylyna who made it even more special!!

What an incredible hidden gem!! My husband and I came here for a date night and it definitely impressed. Serving Ukrainian dishes, both traditional and elevated, with an eclectic coktail menu in a very culturally adorned and spacious setting, Tryzub impressed on every front. Highly recommend their medley dish that's roasted in a pumpkin, the flavors and presentation were incredible and you get to have a bit of the pumpkin in the rind afterwards! Service was attentive and eager to explain any menu items that were confusing. A bit on the higher price point but worth every penny, highly recommend!

Yelp... I wrote this entire review in Russian... then I went to post and you only left punctuation. What gives?! Here is the translation of what I wrote, thank goodness I had it saved. Please forgive that which sounds funky in translation. I won't lie. I've been putting this review off and on. I've been here twice, tried a lot of things, and haven't written a review. So, this review won't have all the details that I usually include, where I take each dish apart and tell you everything I thought. No. But this review will be in Russian (I wish, Yelp, I shake both my fists at thee!) I have Ukrainian heritage. Although my parents came from the Soviet Union, they were in Ukraine. The dishes my mother cooked were Ukrainian and those that were eaten in the general Soviet Union. Therefore, although I am not an expert on Ukrainian gastronomy, I ate real Ukrainian dishes at home. This is what Tryzub does well. Their food is one hundred and ten percent based on traditional food that was eaten in Ukraine and the General Union. What is especially cool is that Tryzub not only cooks traditional food, but does something creative with each dish. The quality of the ingredients and the food is amazing. Everything is thought out very well and everything is very fresh. I will tell you a big secret, because my mother does not read my reviews, that the mushroom soup I had here was a little bit tastier than what I eat at home. Now let's talk about the atmosphere. The whole restaurant is covered with memorabilia related to Ukraine and Ukrainian heritage. The decorations take up practically every space on the wall. But even then, they did not overdo it. There are restaurants that throw a bunch of pictures on and the result is God knows what. This is not the case here. Here you feel like you are in a Ukrainian home. And I want to add, some of the decorations are even a little funny. Now I want to talk about the service. It was very friendly. The food came out of the kitchen quickly, and the waitress who looked after us did everything in her power to make sure we had an awesome time. I'll tell you what helps me: I see "salo" or "borscht" - I know what it is. These dishes don't scare me. I imagine an American might see "traditional plate of lard" and ask: "What is this?" They'll tell him: "It's a pork product that's so fatty that it'll melt in the pan." Some will probably look at this waitress as if she had three heads. These things don't scare me. But it's precisely what I know that gives me the opportunity that when I bring my friends here who don't have Ukrainian or Soviet heritage, I can tell them what it is and tell them not to be afraid. In the worst case, I'll order it for myself, and they'll pinch off a piece of mine and then they'll understand: "Oh, this is delicious, listen!" Tryzub is one of the best restaurants I've been to. Not only in the Ukrainian food category, but in general. I would happily recommend this place to everyone. And if friends come to visit me, I won't let them go home until they are here.

We thought it was really good. We have things that we want to try for next time - that is always a good sign! Great atmosphere - it feels like your grandmother's house from the old country, there is so much to look at. The servers were very accommodating and friendly.

I visited Chicago in March and went out of my way to visit this Ukrainian restaurant that had so many good reviews. It was around 1:45 PM on Saturday afternoon and there was no wait. The food was fantastic. The food was authentic, unique, and full of flavor. There were no bad dishes ordered! They also had a wide selection of drinks and cocktails, but I didn't feel like drinking that day. One small hiccup: when I first sat down, the server didn't give me the brunch menu, so I ordered from the regular lunch menu without realizing brunch was still available. Once I saw other people getting brunch dishes, I switched part of my order over. It wasn't a big deal, but it would've been nice to know all my options from the start. The vibe of the place was nice. It was casual and welcoming. Near the bathrooms, there's some bold anti-Putin artwork, which was both surprising and entertaining. All in all, this spot felt like one of those finds you want to tell everyone about, but also kind of want to keep to yourself because it's so good. I'll definitely be back - next time, for brunch right away.

Wow is all I can say to start. Upon walking in, this is one of the most beautiful restaurants in the neighborhood. The service was very welcoming and gave a great rundown of the menu. I'm familiar with Eastern European food being Eastern European myself, but knew nothing of Ukrainian food. The potato pancake flight is a great starter! I had the hunters stew and it was so filling and luscious for a cold day. The real hidden gem here is the infused spirits, seriously they have a flavor for every kind of cocktail. The Bloody Mariyka was superb and a wonderful compliment to the app. I can't wait to come back for supper. The brunch menu is smaller than the dinner menu as expected but I need to engage the full menu for maximum food coma enjoyment.

Really enjoyed my visit to Tryzub! There's a wide variety of varenyky on the menu--we started with the fried varenyky as an appetizer, and they were a great choice. The chicken Kyiv was tender with a rich, flavorful filling that really stood out. Service was good and attentive, especially since it wasn't too busy during our visit. The atmosphere is well decorated with lots of interesting Ukrainian facts and cultural touches, which makes the space feel welcoming and unique. Bonus points for the strong and interesting vodka drinks. Overall, a great spot for authentic food, good drinks, and a relaxed experience. Would definitely return when in the Chicago.

In Chicago for the weekend and made my way to Ukrainian Village. Tryzub was highly rated, so I went there for lunch. Being half Ukrainian and having lived in Kyiv, I was hit with a wave of nostalgia as I stepped into the restaurant. The walls are adorned with various things that make you feel like you're in someone's home. Ukrainian pop music plays through the speakers. I sat at the bar, which features even more interesting aesthetics. I really wanted to holubtsi, but they were featuring their brunch menu. I had a breakfast skillet (essentially shakshuka) and potato pancakes. The skillet was great. The eggs could have used a pinch of salt, but the toasted, seasoned rye bread that's served with it more than makes up for it. Some people like thick potato pancakes, while I prefer them thin and crispy. The ones at Tryzub are somewhere in the middle. But they're served with plenty of sour cream and a tasty mushroom cream sauce. The bartender was friendly and accommodating, and I happily purchased a Tryzub t-shirt (the same ones that staff wear). If you're in Chicago and want to experience and support a Ukrainian business that also serves fantastic food, Tryzub is your spot!

This restaurant embodies the heart and soul of Ukrainian Village- the food and atmosphere both deliver bold, refined sensations while also paying homage to Ukrainian history and tradition. The service is expeditious and genial. We ordered a menagerie of different dishes- a Varenyky (Pierogi) party platter, Chicken Kyiv, and Goulash. They all tasted unique and superb. The Varenyky were definitely the fan favorite, I got to try very interesting combination of new flavors. I'm no expert on authentic Ukrainian food so I can't speak on its authenticity but the flavors were all delectable.

Tryzub remains one of my absolute favorite restaurants in the Chicago area (and probably one of my favorite restaurants period). It is such a special place. The ambiance and energy is so warm and inviting. The service is top tier and the food and drinks never miss. I always look forward to a Chicago trip because I know we'll be getting a meal in here.

Winter Borsch, Ukrainian pierogis, and I can't remember the larger flat thing- but it was DELICIOUS!

I've been coming here for the past five years and it absolutely never disappoints. I've had everything from the Ukrainian scrambled eggs, ham and gruyere crepes and the Athena omelette (add chicken!) to the pierogis, paninis, hutsulske pechenya (beef stew--OMG it's so good and only available Saturdays) to the delectable assortment of cookies in the pastry case. The carrot salad the comes with a lot of the dishes is amazing! Everything here tastes homemade, and I really love it because nothing is oversalted or overseasoned, just delicious homey perfection. If you are looking for salty American "home fries" or diner hashbrowns this isn't your place. Potatoes are buttery and have a melt in your mouth consistency, but what I love about Shokolad is that the flavors are subtle, savory, and just right. But what other word exists for capably made Ukranian food? It is comfort food qua comfort food. The Platonic ideal of such. Savory in the extreme with more subtle notes of sweet and tart. On a previous trip to Chicago I lodged in a neighborhood bordering Ukraine Village. The proximity allowed me to sample a few establishments from the Ukraine. Things were fine; nothing extraordinary. On this more recent trip, I braved an excursion to the western suburbs, just for the Magic Jug. A food blogger named Hammond said it's the best. He did not lie. So it's in the occidental hinterlands of the city. And yet, my fellow diners were all from the Ukraine. So Ukranian, in fact, they all spoke the mother tongue. Besides that, the surroundings were not particularly Slavic. Minimalist pinewood interior makes you think moreso of Japan and less so of the Eastern Bloc. But anyhow. The chief feature that makes it so good is that everything is seasoned and flavored perfectly. The cooks - all from the Ukraine and all women - each possess palates with sniper rifle precision. The pelmeni (stuffed dumplings of similar appearance to tortellini). So beefy. So oniony. And finished with an herbaceous garlicky seasoning. The golubtsi (stuffed cabbage) at Magic Jug is without it's usually tomato sauce, giving you breathing room to really basque in the chicken broth in which the rice and veg were cooked. The effect: think a reconstructed chicken noodle soup - only with a fat dollop of smetana (sour cream). And the stewed liver. Really like a liver Diane. Don't be a wuss, eat the liver. Get it with mashed potatoes. I had mine with buckwheat so you don't have to. They also have several selections of house made bread. I ordered the one that's like a pull-apart brioche. Sour Rye Soup: Not bad, but honestly, I wouldn't order it again... the fermented sourness was just too direct and intense. Polish Hunters Stew: Apparently a national dish of Poland. The first bite tasted like Italian meat sauce, with a rich tomato flavor and a slight smoky aroma; then I discovered the ingredients included sausage, cured beef brisket, minced meat, and sauerkraut, making it quite substantial and much more satisfying than Italian meat sauce. Overall, it was a rich, sweet and sour flavor, perfect with rice, pasta, or bread. Sauerkraut & Mushroom Pierogi: Dumplings, but the Polish version. The sauerkraut was only slightly sour, refreshing and delicious with the mushrooms, while the sour cream added a touch of creaminess and richness. Unfortunately, the skin was thick and sticky, as if it had been boiled for a long time. For better dumplings skin, please turn to a Northeastern Chinese. Half Duck: Strangely, it reminded me of confit de canard. The meat was incredibly tender, falling off the bone with a gentle pull; the melt-in-your-mouth texture was truly delightful. The cranberry sauce was perfectly balanced between sweet and sour, with a rich fruity and fermented aroma. The rosemary emerged in the aftertaste, enriching the flavors and cutting through the richness. The accompanying sauerkraut was even better than the duck, with a crunchy texture and a mild, pleasant sourness, enveloped in a rich buttery and creamy flavor. The accompanying fpotatoes were also soft and delicious, but the roasted pear was too overpowering in its softness and sweetness, not meeting my expectations for a palate cleanser. Table Bread: The bread itself was unremarkable, but the generous amount of butter was commendable. I cannot believe that there is only one server for all the tables.

We started off with the caviar which came with blintzes on the side, egg salad, chopped onions, and sour cream. We ordered a bottle of champagne that was the perfect combination. We wanted to try a bunch of different items so we decided to split the Russian Tea Time platter for two as we were able to try some appetizers and then the entree plate included beef stroganoff, stuffed cabbage and chicken kebab. Everything was so tasty! My favorite food was the caviar, stuffed cabbage and for dessert we split the honey cake. The inside of the restaurant looked nicer in person than the photos I had seen online. The ambiance was sophisticated and serene. Our server was very attentive and they were quick to clear any dirty plates.

However, if you have never had R/U food before, then give it a try. Perashki had almost no potatoes in them, very small size, not tasty at all. Borsh was okay, not the taste I was hoping to get. Tabule had almost no greens (the traditional tabule is mostly the greens). This was nothing even close to the traditional tabule. 3 out of 10 I would not be back to this place for food.
