It is 2 AM, and I am writing this because your staff's unprofessionalism ruined my night and caused quite a conflict between me and my girlfriend. Let's get one thing straight: I am from Kazakhstan. I support Ukraine, always been. Donated quite a lot for some brigades on frontlines and I personally have a strong personal bias against the ruzian state (my experience with them in Kazakhstan, with them being bunch of racists and disgusting monkeys) and its actions since the 2022 invasion. My girlfriend and I are even actively learning Ukrainian together. But I don't speak it fluently yet, but since she's from Ukraine she helps me. I came to your establishment to spend my hard earned money and give my lady a good time and not to be treated like an enemy because of the language I happen to speak. It's a disgusting pattern. Six months ago, a waiter snatched a napkin I was still using right off the table without a word. Just snatched it as she was going the other way from the table. And that night six months ago, I felt some weird gazing and feeling from staff, like If they hated me and wanted me to leave. Tonight was even worse. The female server brought our food and spoke English to me but switched to Ukrainian for my girlfriend, intentionally creating a barrier. Then, a male waiter had the nerve to approach the table and tell ONLY her that the restaurant was closing in 5 minutes. He wouldn't even look me in the eye or acknowledge my existence. But the moment it was time to collect the money? Suddenly, he's staring only at me you think my lady can't pay or what, or that's she's a women and that's why you don't even have to look at her? This is the United States and I'm a citizen of this country. We are a free country, and in this industry, you stay professional. I am paying for service and hospitality, not for your staff's "selective" political activism or their cowardly, passive-aggressive vibes. If your employees can't treat every customer with basic respect and speak English to the whole table, they shouldn't be working in hospitality. I can feel the hate and the prejudice in their eyes every time they walk by, and it's pathetic. I left a $5 tip, and honestly, that was pure charity. Your team didn't earn a single cent. I think "Velour" is the best Ukrainian restaurant in the Chicagoland area nowadays! I discovered this place when I googled places with the live music for my daughter's big birthday and we decided to stop by for tasting dinner. Born in Ukraine, I can confirm the authenticity of the cuisine. We tried several appetizers and main dishes and every single dish was A+! Fish soup had a wonderful flavor, black cheese Varenyky proved the chef's skill to make an excellent house made pasta , traditional Ukrainian Banosh (a Ukrainian version of Polenta on cream served with feta and pork fried lard) was mouthwatering, Golubci (Stuffed Cabbage) that we ordered as appetizer melted in the mouth and had an absolutely perfect proportion of the meat and rice complimented by a masterfully created sauce. Our main dishes did not disappoint either. My husband's octopus was tender and well seasoned, Kyiv chicken was lightly breaded and was very tasty, beautifully plated duck leg confit was at the level of the best French restaurants , and the roasted rabbit leg in the mushroom sauce , so rarely seen on the other menus, was to die for. We were so full after the dinner that we ordered our desserts to go to enjoy at home. We were really excited to try Velour and drove about an hour specifically to check out their desserts, coffee, and a couple of apps. About a week before our visit, I checked their website and noticed it only allowed reservations during the week, so I assumed weekends were walk-in only. When we arrived, there was an event happening, so we asked if they were still accepting guests for sit-down service. We were told it was reservation-only. I explained that the website didn't allow weekend reservations, which made it confusing from a customer perspective. There were also a few tables that didn't appear to be reserved, and most of the reserved tables were still empty at the time, which made the experience feel a bit frustrating after driving so far. What was most disappointing was that we weren't even offered the option to order anything to go. We were simply stopped at the door and turned away. The interior is absolutely beautiful, and the concept is great. Unfortunately, between the reservation confusion, parking challenges, and the location, it wasn't the experience we were hoping for. We came here for my wife birthday, calling ahead to check if there was seating. They said there was, and we'd be seated no problem. While there were seats, it turned out there was an event going on with about 20-25 people, a DJ, a toastmaster, and loud music. We checked out this fancy dainty Ukrainian restaurant in the evening and was pleasantly surprised how flexible the wait staff and chef was able to accommodating serving the breakfast menu as well as we were curious to try out one item from each menu! I absolutely adore the enthusiasm our waitress, Anastasia had to help us select the perfect meal. Anastasia was extremely patiently and friendly in offering answer my questions, offering her insight as to which items were most popular as well as her own favorite items. This restaurant is in a kind of strip retail strip center with a nail salon and a ups store but don't let that fool you. On the way in the restaurant their was a nice lady watering all the plants surrounding the entrance which gave it a warm bright feel. As you walk in the space is sleek, warm and beautiful. It's modern but inviting with soft pale green colors and warm cream flowers beautifully painted on the wall. They also have some really cool swings set up as tables which was neat. As for the food, it was absolutely amazing. Everything fresh to order and our waitress was phenomenal and gave great suggestions and descriptions of the food. Everyone in the restaurant is casually dressed, but the food is very much on par with a fine dining restaurant. The mixed drink menu is amazing and the wines on the menu pair well with the entrees. Our waitress recommended the Porn Star Martini which did not disappoint. My husband had the mushroom soup to start and he said it was great. For our entrees I had the Kyiv Chicken which comes with mash potatoes and roasted carrots. The butter inside the chicken breast had a delicious combination of peppers and garlic. It was wonderful.
