    Black Cheese Varenyky. A+++
    Nataliya Z.

    I think "Velour" is the best Ukrainian restaurant in the Chicagoland area nowadays! I discovered this place when I googled places with the live music for my daughter's big birthday and we decided to stop by for tasting dinner. Born in Ukraine, I can confirm the authenticity of the cuisine. We tried several appetizers and main dishes and every single dish was A+! Fish soup had a wonderful flavor, black cheese Varenyky proved the chef's skill to make an excellent house made pasta , traditional Ukrainian Banosh (a Ukrainian version of Polenta on cream served with feta and pork fried lard) was mouthwatering, Golubci (Stuffed Cabbage) that we ordered as appetizer melted in the mouth and had an absolutely perfect proportion of the meat and rice complimented by a masterfully created sauce. Our main dishes did not disappoint either. My husband's octopus was tender and well seasoned, Kyiv chicken was lightly breaded and was very tasty, beautifully plated duck leg confit was at the level of the best French restaurants , and the roasted rabbit leg in the mushroom sauce , so rarely seen on the other menus, was to die for. We were so full after the dinner that we ordered our desserts to go to enjoy at home. This gem with masterfully crafted cocktails, [[HIGHLIGHT]]the unique ambiance and unparalleled service is truly the greatest representation of the exquisite Ukrainian cuisine.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] The adequate prices and personal attention to each customer makes this restaurant a Must Go! I highly recommend!

    Amazing food, amazing service. What an amazing experience. Thank you so much. Anastasiia was our server she was so nice and told us all about the food. [[HIGHLIGHT]]We felt so comfortable and the food was so good.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]]

    [[HIGHLIGHT]]Such a beaitiful place![[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] [[HIGHLIGHT]]Friendly service and an elegant atmosphere.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] Our expectations were very high, and 2 out of our 3 deserts were delicious (the apple and mango), however, the cashier prompted us to buy a 3rd (the heart shaped guava), and it was extremely unplesant. It tasted like the smell of buring cannabis. For the price, it left us very unsatisfied.

    Velour knocked my expectations out of the ball park. We checked out this fancy dainty Ukrainian restaurant in the evening and was pleasantly surprised how flexible the wait staff and chef was able to accommodating serving the breakfast menu as well as we were curious to try out one item from each menu! I absolutely adore the enthusiasm our waitress, Anastasia had to help us select the perfect meal. Anastasia was extremely patiently and friendly in offering answer my questions, offering her insight as to which items were most popular as well as her own favorite items. We wound up trying and really liking the juicy and tender ribeye steak as well as the heart-shaped snickers cake. You definitely need to come check out Velour!

    [[HIGHLIGHT]]Super aesthetically pleasing interior and food![[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] Especially the desserts. They're so adorable and we were hoping to get the rabbit one but they ran out. Food was delicious as well and cool how there's sort of like a plating montage for the foods on their virtual menu. Would highly recommend this place for a catch up with a friend to get drinks and dessert or have a full on meal!

    This restaurant is in a kind of strip retail strip center with a nail salon and a ups store but don't let that fool you. [[HIGHLIGHT]]On the way in the restaurant their was a nice lady watering all the plants surrounding the entrance which gave it a warm bright feel.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] [[HIGHLIGHT]]As you walk in the space is sleek, warm and beautiful. It's modern but inviting with soft pale green colors and warm cream flowers beautifully painted on the wall.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] [[HIGHLIGHT]]They also have some really cool swings set up as tables which was neat.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] As for the food, it was absolutely amazing. Everything fresh to order and our waitress was phenomenal and gave great suggestions and descriptions of the food. As good as the food was the dessert counter was amazing as well. It looked like something out of a culinary magazine. Overall wonderful experience. I live in Alabama and was on a holiday but wouldn't hesitate to make the trip just for this place.

    The mango is the star of the show! A must try!

    [[HIGHLIGHT]]Everything is 10/10 here. The atmosphere, the food, the people, the vibes, and the service![[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] This place is an absolute gem and something I will be gatekeeping. Our server Anastasia was simply amazing. She was so warm and inviting, very informative and attentive. We appreciated her honesty and willingness to help us!

    Their desserts are absolutely amazing every time. The mushrooms soup served every Tuesday and Friday is a must order. The steak was a bit tough needs more flavor. The waitress was very polite and knowledgeable as she was the only server there. [[HIGHLIGHT]]The decor and furniture was simple and comfortable, the colors were comfortable to look at made it easy to sit and relax in such a cafe style setting.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] This place will for sure be a place I would love to come back

    This place is beyond amazing! Their desserts are not only beautiful but delicious! Good ambiance! Very friendly staff! Delicious coffee - the only thing I would recommend is getting long handled spoons instead of the paper straws. In my option, they don't really go well with hot coffee!

    A Pear dessert: Ingredients: not showable

    [[HIGHLIGHT]]Last time when I went here the atmosphere was amazing and was really vibrant for such a Ukrainian restaurant.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] Do not judge a book by kits cover because its desserts were phenomenal and amazing, it was a one of kind experience for me. The service was also very good here, they were checking up on on me every 10 or so minutes. Must go to Ukrainian restaurants in Chicago suburbs!

    We came here for girls lunch to celerae the holidays. [[HIGHLIGHT]]This place is very cute and has a good girlfriend vibe.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] They have a breakfast menu and a regular food menu. We ordered mostly from the regular food menu. Great food from appetizers to desserts, my personal favorite is the duck leg. Very special coffee menu too - I tried rose latte for the first time and I can taste the rosy hint. The raspberry mousse dessert looks so pretty and tastes even better. Our waiter is very tentative and keeps checking to see if everything is okay. We spent a good afternoon here and I would recommend this place

I've been coming here for the past five years and it absolutely never disappoints. I've had everything from the Ukrainian scrambled eggs, ham and gruyere crepes and the Athena omelette (add chicken!) to the pierogis, paninis, hutsulske pechenya (beef stew--OMG it's so good and only available Saturdays) to the delectable assortment of cookies in the pastry case. The carrot salad the comes with a lot of the dishes is amazing! Everything here tastes homemade, and I really love it because nothing is oversalted or overseasoned, just delicious homey perfection. If you are looking for salty American "home fries" or diner hashbrowns this isn't your place. Potatoes are buttery and have a melt in your mouth consistency, but what I love about Shokolad is that the flavors are subtle, savory, and just right. It feels truly European and authentic, and while I'm no expert at all on Ukrainian cuisine, this place is an absolute gem. My only complaint is that the service can be slow (but always, always kind). As long as you come not in a hurry and are ready to enjoy your meal with patience, you will leave delighted.

Served in a deep bowl, it is hearty serving; full of shredded duck and intensely flavorful. Add a dollop of the delicious sour cream for a spike of brightness and dig in. You may want to split it, or you'll likely take some home. The dumplings are also good, and Kelly loved her chicken Kiev. I ordered the short ribs and found them a bit overcooked and greasy. Would not reorder. The cheesecake dessert was good, but the chocolate drunken cherry dessert is better, if they have it. The cocktails are creative and well made. The wine list is primarily Eastern Europe/Central Asian, and quite good. We enjoyed the Monastery Tvrdos Vranac. The dining room is cozy and playful. We did not have room for Zakusky but would definitely return to try that and get another bowl of borscht.

But what other word exists for capably made Ukranian food? It is comfort food qua comfort food. The Platonic ideal of such. Savory in the extreme with more subtle notes of sweet and tart. On a previous trip to Chicago I lodged in a neighborhood bordering Ukraine Village. The proximity allowed me to sample a few establishments from the Ukraine. Things were fine; nothing extraordinary. On this more recent trip, I braved an excursion to the western suburbs, just for the Magic Jug. A food blogger named Hammond said it's the best. He did not lie. So it's in the occidental hinterlands of the city. And yet, my fellow diners were all from the Ukraine. So Ukranian, in fact, they all spoke the mother tongue. Besides that, the surroundings were not particularly Slavic. Minimalist pinewood interior makes you think moreso of Japan and less so of the Eastern Bloc. But anyhow. The chief feature that makes it so good is that everything is seasoned and flavored perfectly. The cooks - all from the Ukraine and all women - each possess palates with sniper rifle precision. The pelmeni (stuffed dumplings of similar appearance to tortellini). So beefy. So oniony. And finished with an herbaceous garlicky seasoning. The golubtsi (stuffed cabbage) at Magic Jug is without it's usually tomato sauce, giving you breathing room to really basque in the chicken broth in which the rice and veg were cooked. The effect: think a reconstructed chicken noodle soup - only with a fat dollop of smetana (sour cream). And the stewed liver. Really like a liver Diane. Don't be a wuss, eat the liver. Get it with mashed potatoes. I had mine with buckwheat so you don't have to. They also have several selections of house made bread. I ordered the one that's like a pull-apart brioche. Too full to appreciate it from on a visceral level, I was still able to note the craft involved. Within it, there contained the balancing act of well developed gluten and pliant interior.

We weren't sure what to order or how to narrow down what to get and the server made some great suggestions. For salads we had the cabbage salad and the beet salad, both were really good on their own and also if you mix them together too. The large meat pie - I forgot the name of it - was incredible too, and I had to get it with a side of the mushroom gravy which went well on everything. The dumplings were really good too and the mushroom soup was probably the best soup I've had in years. We will definitely be back.

Sour Rye Soup: Not bad, but honestly, I wouldn't order it again... the fermented sourness was just too direct and intense. Polish Hunters Stew: Apparently a national dish of Poland. The first bite tasted like Italian meat sauce, with a rich tomato flavor and a slight smoky aroma; then I discovered the ingredients included sausage, cured beef brisket, minced meat, and sauerkraut, making it quite substantial and much more satisfying than Italian meat sauce. Overall, it was a rich, sweet and sour flavor, perfect with rice, pasta, or bread. Sauerkraut & Mushroom Pierogi: Dumplings, but the Polish version. The sauerkraut was only slightly sour, refreshing and delicious with the mushrooms, while the sour cream added a touch of creaminess and richness. Unfortunately, the skin was thick and sticky, as if it had been boiled for a long time. For better dumplings skin, please turn to a Northeastern Chinese. Half Duck: Strangely, it reminded me of confit de canard. The meat was incredibly tender, falling off the bone with a gentle pull; the melt-in-your-mouth texture was truly delightful. The cranberry sauce was perfectly balanced between sweet and sour, with a rich fruity and fermented aroma. The rosemary emerged in the aftertaste, enriching the flavors and cutting through the richness. The accompanying sauerkraut was even better than the duck, with a crunchy texture and a mild, pleasant sourness, enveloped in a rich buttery and creamy flavor. The accompanying fpotatoes were also soft and delicious, but the roasted pear was too overpowering in its softness and sweetness, not meeting my expectations for a palate cleanser. Table Bread: The bread itself was unremarkable, but the generous amount of butter was commendable. I cannot believe that there is only one server for all the tables.
