The work I needed done was the installation of a 50-gal electric hot water heater (plus haul away of the old one) and the diagnosis/replacement of a corroded waste line connector for a garbage disposal. When I set up my appointment, I made sure to clarify that I wasn't going to be charged for the service visit, or additionally, for any diagnostic steps. Keep this in mind if you're considering them because it's probably a better idea to go with a plumbing company that won't charge you just to come out and physically look at the work you want done. Unfortunately, I was in a hurry, not because something was broken, but due to the fact that completing the work quickly was pivotal to getting a condo sale to the finish line. I was able to schedule my appointment for as early as Monday despite making the initial contact with 2 Sons Plumbing on Thursday (they could've come sooner, but I opted to avoid the extra "rush" or weekend fees by waiting until Monday). One thing I didn't like about their business model is there's no upfront cost for general jobs (i.e., install a hot water heater) or any idea of hourly charges. For instance, with Lowe's and/or Home Depot, I could call and get quotes for this type of work from their subcontractors. Going through Fast Water Heater (Lowe's preferred subcontractor), a 50-gal water heater installation might run between $2,200 and $2,400 depending on the model of hot water heater (the purchase of which is included in the quote). I ended up buying a new water heater from Home Depot ($871 after taxes) a couple of days prior to my appointment with 2 Sons Plumbing, and hauling it up a few flights of stairs to the condo in order to save money. I would later find out that, had I bought the 50-gal electric water heater carried in the back of the 2 Sons Plumbing Truck, it would've cost $3600 (I have no idea why it was this expensive). In the end, I paid 2 Sons Plumbing $1870 after taxes for the installation of the Home Depot Water Heater and haul-away of my old one ($2700+ if you include the price of the hot water heater I bought on my own). In addition to the hot water heater install, I ended up paying for a new garbage disposal plus its installation because the corrosion in the waste line was so bad that new parts were needed (which they didn't have). It made more sense to just replace the whole thing (current garbage disposal was 10+ years old)--This came out to $786.88 after taxes and a 3% convenience fee for using a credit card. Overall, it was a good experience thanks to the knowledge/prep work I had done for 2 Sons Plumbing before going with them. The final cost to me certainly had the potential to be much higher had I let 2 Sons Plumbing provide or do everything. The job took about 6 hours to complete, and I paid in the ballpark of $2500 for the hourly rates (?) plus the purchase of a basic garbage disposal and a minuscule amount of parts. I overheard that the general hourly rate is $400, so what I paid aligns with that. The amount of contact and post-job follow up documentation I received (emails; texts; invoices; etc.) was thorough but also annoying (I.e., solicitation for reviews). All things considered, here's how I'd rate things: Availability/Communication: 5/5 Cost: 2/5 Technician: 5/5 Invoice/Follow-up: 3/5

It's nice being able to call a local, real person who answers the phone and can make it to you fast. Chuck is friendly, polite, funny, and honest. Yes, it's a bit pricy -- but comparable to most plumbers and Chuck can give free cost estimates over the phone without charging to visit and inspect first (like many other plumbers). Next, I bought a 1931 home that was a rental. It had deferred maintenance. And the inspection report told me I would need to make some plumbing fixes. I had them replace all the tub/shower faucets and valves. I also got a new tub drain (there was evidence that at some point there had been a leak). I got a new water shut off. A new copper water line for the fridge. A new basement utility sink. New water connection to the washer. A new p-trap to the bathroom sink. I learned that the best faucets are Moen. Garrett and Abe are a great team. I do feel like Jafco is more expensive than if you hire a local one-person plumber. That might be to cover their marketing and scheduling. But Jafco can fit your in pretty quickly. So that is a nice trade-off for when your plumbing job is time sensitive.

My wife scheduled a free service call, knowing of course there would be a catch. The next day, a tech named Tom (goes by "Tommy") showed up. Within 5 minutes of looking at the unit, he told us the entire water heater had to be replaced--for $2,500. On top of that, he claimed the pan and placement didn't meet code and insisted it needed to be reinstalled 18 inches off the ground, which would cost another $2,000. That's a total of $4,300 plus tax. When my wife called me to discuss, I tried speaking with him directly, but he constantly talked over me and wouldn't listen. That was enough for me; I told him thanks but we'll be taking our business elsewhere. We ended up ordering a brand-new water heater through Home Depot. With installation by Fast Water Heater, it cost us $1,800 plus tax. It was done the next day, and everything passed city code exactly where the old one sat. I don't think everyone at Mr. Rooter operates like Mr Tommy, but my experience felt like a sales pitch disguised as a service call. Instead of actually diagnosing the issue, it was straight to an overpriced replacement and scare tactics about code compliance. The customer service was rude, and the upselling was not ethical. Do yourself a favor and get quotes from other vendors before signing with Mr. Rooter.
