The restaurant is cozy, with lots of interesting pictures on the wall, but guests should know that the prices are not as listed on the menu. I fully understand that prices for everything are going up right now, however the menus either need to be updated or guests need to be informed about price differences before ordering. I ordered the lunch combo. It was listed at $18. I was charged $25. My husband's sandwich was charged $23. With a family of five we are considerate of what we order. We would have ordered something different had we known the true price of everything. A lunch of $113 was very unexpected and definitely not worth it. read more

Went here for lunch with a friend today. My last visit was in 2018 and I gave it one star. I wish this time was better but sadly it wasn't. We split the special which was a French dip with a side. We got onion rings. We also got a side of fries. The French dip was tasteless and the au jus was very salty. I couldn't use the au just at all. The fries and 4 small and 2 medium size rings were ok. The price was 57 dollars with one drink, splitting the special and a side order of fries. Very pricey for mediocre at best food. The service however was good. Very disappointing visit. We visited on Friday evening and we were seated outside quickly. Most of the fam got hamburgers which they all enjoyed. I personally got the baked potato with pulled pork, Mac and cheese, bbq sauce and a few other toppings. The potato was huge and certainly more than I could eat. It was delicious and I'd order it again. While we were there we also met the owner and had a very pleasant conversation. We visit Ridgeway/Ouray yearly and always make a point to visit True Grit. We heard this place has some good cheesecake which is our absolute favorite! the cheesecake was good! Their strawberry mud cake was super good but their ice cream sundae was extremely disappointing. they gave us 1 scoop of vanilla ice cream which was the size of the palm with some melted whip cream and a tiny drizzle of jam. I just ordered a couple of draft IPAs and french fries. The customer service was lacking greatly; I had asked if there was a wild wing sauce for dipping the fries but there wasn't so I just asked for ketchup....when the waiter put down the fries he gave me no plates or ketchup and did not ask me if I wanted anything when he did give me the fries. I had to get up and get the ketchup bottle from another table and squeeze the ketchup on the fries since I had no plates or even napkins. The view was hard to beat so that was what helped me stay remotely content. I would recommend but would ask for a different server than the one I had. read more

This was my 3rd time eating at the True Grit within the past 3 years. For the price of the food, you would expect something a little better. Service was decent, atmosphere is there. But the quality of the food is not. I ordered the BLT and the bacon had that sitting out for hours texture, the tomato was green, and lettuce was aged and soggy. My son ordered the Oinkinator burger for a whopping $22. He didn't care for the burger, he said the bacon was hard and the burger was flavorless and he only had 6 fries. A shame since there isn't many options in this small town. Hopefully they find a better cook, or put a little more effort in their food considering they charge an arm and a leg for low quality items. I heard from the locals that the True Grit is a place to stay away from. read more

This is my favorite restaurant every time I visit my best high school friends in Ridgway; actually they live on top of the gorgeous mountain above Ridgway!! We eat here at least once when I visit. I was blown away by the incredible amount of John Wayne memorabilia!!! The Duke really loves on in Ridgway. Actually, the movie True Grit was filmed near here, hence the reason for the name of this epic restaurant. Great local Colorado brews And A-ma-zing food, freshly cooked & it's owned by locals. It's worth a drive from anywhere in Colorado!!!! You'll need time to check out all the good stuff on the second floor after you see everything on the first floor. Our friends have reported not feeling well after eating here. If you aren't 50 years old you better have your ID with you or they won't serve you. True Grit is the epitome of great food, fantastic service, and memorable ambiance. We ordered the fried pickle slices, chicken fried steak with sautéed mushrooms, mashed potatoes and green beans, as well as the breaded chicken wrap, a hamburger, and kids burger. We thoroughly enjoyed the fried pickle slices. The chicken fried steak and sides tasted perfect, and that sentiment was shared with the chicken wrap and burger. The fries (which I call Apple curl fries because of their unique shape) were the best fries I've had. The kids burger, that was something else all together. My youngest gave a response of approval we've never seen him do after the first bite; he was in food heaven. Mix all of that with the welcoming smiles and hospitality of Kelly's service (and broader team who helped at appropriate timings), and, we have a memory to last decades. If you're traveling through or staying in the Ridgway area, you'll be doing yourself a disservice by not stopping for lunch or dinner at True Grit. Hands down the best meal we had over 5 days between Ridgway, Ouray, and Telluride. read more

This restaurant is named after the John Wayne movie and they have memorabilia on the walls and items for sale. It's a ranch to table restaurant with local meats. There is a balcony deck and perhaps I would have liked this place more if we sat upstairs. Our server was great - Gabby T. She was friendly and professional. We ordered The Original, Grit famous bison burger which is bison, lettuce, tomato and pickle and added cheddar cheese. A cup of pork green chili and a club salad. Side of fried okra. The club salad had a lot of stuff in it - mixed greens, shredded cheddar and jack cheese, carrot sticks, grape tomatoes, boiled egg, bacon and turkey breast. Which was great except that the carrot sticks were huge and the bacon seemed to be store bought and not home made. And the dish they served it in made it difficult to mix up. The dressing was slightly frozen and difficult to use. The pork green Chile was simply spicy and not tasty. Would not recommend. The bison burger was average. Nothing amazing. The fried okra was my favorite thing from our meal. So while all of this would have been acceptable, what was not was the other waitress who was coughing all over the ice, the water jug, the drinks she was carrying. It was terrible. I'm not insistent on masks but when you're coughing over the customers' food and drinks that's unacceptable. Witnessing this for the two tables she was serving just ruined the dining experience for me. And since they allowed her to do this, I would tell people to stay away. Don't serve while sick or at least wear a mask. read more

Stopped for Lunch today. Had been here a few years back ( pre-covid) and had a very nice dinner. Today, not so much. My burger was ok, but not great. My husband ordered the Ruben, no sauerkraut. It came fully loaded with sauerkraut . We waited at least 45 mom for our food. Their tequilla selection was poor and very over priced. Rooster Cogburn would have "strung them up". Only remarkable in how bad it was. Service was terrible: surly and unsmiling waitress, no water, no silverware, no napkins, ice tea was refilled once but glass was empty for most of the meal. Ordered chili (with saltine crackers, because there was no cornbread) and even the crackers weren't brought to the table til I'd had my chili for 5min. We ordered both red and green chili; tho red was billed as mild it was so spicy I couldn't finish it. The green was so hot my husband had tears. I told the waitress it was so hot I couldn't eat it and she didn't offer to take it off the bill or bring me a substitute. The dinner salad was a handful of mixed greens with 2 baby carrots and 2 cherry tomatoes; we ordered blue cheese dressing and it was inedible (the color was literally orange...?) BTW this was our second bad experience here, so although I rarely leave bad reviews, this one is well deserved. True Grit is trading on name alone. We were driving from Telluride to Aspen amd decided to stop in. Many of our meals are planned ahead of time on trips but our random lunch stops are always typically the best. Honestly I was so shocked to see this wasn't averaging 5 stars after we left. This place was packed! The service surprisingly was fast and efficient. The bartender, I think her name was Kirby?, was funny, honest and personable. There were many locals in and out and everyone looked hella happy! The food was awesome! The pork green chile, yes is "spicy", but oh so good!! Chunky, thick with all sorts of goodies. My hubs got the chicken fried chicken. Ya'll it was so crispy, but thinly battered and perfect! I got the mac and cheese with broccoli. Definitely not something I'd typically order but it was AWESOME. I didn't feel so bad eating a pile of mac with some veg on top. We were so glad to have ended our vacation with dinner here! Looking forward to coming back in July when I hear the wildflowers are amazing! Our fall trip was so much fun, food here was good, portions large, our waitress was SO friendly and helpful with suggestions. This was my second time here. The first time I came was back in the summer of 2018 I believe. Back then my experience was great. It was awesome to see and read about the history of the area. My grandpa is a big John Wayne fan, so it made this place that much more lovable. Fast forward to now. We made the drive from Montrose to have dinner here I was so excited. Everything looked the same I got the same vibes from my first time as I was walking in. Unfortunately that's where it ended. We were greeted kinda in a rushed way. My family was a party of 4. So when the girl ask she was like oh take that table right there. Literally right at the entrance. Normally I wouldn't care but this area just had a severe weather storm a few day prior. So the weather I'm told is not normal for this time of year. It was October 27th but the temps have been in the single/teen digits. So we sat at the table where anytime the door was opened the cold air blasted us every time. A waitress hanging around the bar was even in and out to do I don't know what. Once she went outside to pick a mint sprig for the bartender. I thought it was funny how she kept running in and out while we were sitting there cold and she was complaining how cold it was every time she blew back in to the restaurant. Our server was nice and checked on us frequently. The food on the other hand was not as nice as I remembered. First off I think they had a shorter menu. I remember a huge menu that had pages and pages to look through. This time they had a two side single menu. In all honesty my husband ordered the chicken fried steak and it was great. However my daughter ordered their daily special of pork pazole soup. Let's just say that was a mistake. Being from SoCal we think of something different when it comes to Pazole soup. What they brought to our table was like Tex mex chili or something. My daughter was very disappointed. So she helped her dad eat his chicken fried steak. I ordered the homemade meatloaf. It was not good at all. It was mushy like they added too much bread to the meatloaf on top of adding gravy on top of it. The green beans were ehh just dressed up canned green beans. The mash potatoes and gravy was the only thing I enjoyed. Desert was great! Apple pie, NY cheesecake and pumpkin cheesecake. Maybe we caught them at a wrong time, anyone can have a bad day. It's really not a bad place to experience at least once. Hopefully your experience will be like my first. I absolutely love small towns but one thing I can say is I don't like the small town mindedness. My 13 year old son was getting so many looks and laughs and whispers from the old people at the bar because he has bright red hair. Not the restaurant's issue at all just throwing this out here. If you're from a big city and maybe look different expect to get a lot of looks. Sometimes adults have no common decency to respect others. This is a long review. But I say give this place a shot at least once. read more
