However, once I did I was blown away. Right when I entered I was hit with such an upbeat vibe. The late 90s and early 2000s hip hop and R&B tracks that were playing really livened up the place. More importantly, my meal was exquisite. I had the curried goat with red beans / rice and broccoli. The goat was sooooo delicious and the meat was so tender. I also ordered coco bread that was perfect for dipping into the currry sauce. The beans and rice as well as the broccoli were perfectly cooked and elegantly complimented the goat. I also ordered a Ting (Grapefruit) soda that was also very tasty and unique. Lastly, I had the red bean pie for dessert and wow was it good! It probably would have gone great with a scoop of vanilla ice cream. Anway, back to the vibe, I typically prefer quiet places when I dine, but the vibe here worked well for me. I really liked the music and the upbeat atmosphere of the venue. The dining area was also very open and didn't at all feel stuffy like some other more posh places I've been to. Just a cool laid back place where you can enjoy some good music and great food. To close, every item I had was excellent and perfectly cooked. In fact, I have to say this is ranked up there with one of the best dining experiences I've had and, if I wasn't going back on my pre-summer-time diet, I'd probably become a regular. Regardless, I will definitely be making a trip back in the not so distant future, perhaps on a cheat day.

The chicken was okay, the sauce was watery runny, not as thick as it should be. The cabbage was un seasoned and very bland. They didn't have plantain so I substituted mac and cheese. It was served as a big square hunk served in a dish that just came out of the microwave. It had a bland taste to it as well. The cook should be ashamed of himself. They got me for $25.00 plus tip. That's not what I'm used to eating when the places in Philly are on point. Do yourself a favor and steer clear of this place. They really need to do better. They got me this time, but won't get me again.

All the other restaurants were in Philadelphia. I ordered takeout since I was unfamiliar with the restaurant. When I arrived I saw that there were plenty of tables for dining. The restaurant is in a small shopping center with parking. Another benefit since many restaurants near downtown West Chester do not offer parking. The order consisted of Jamaican Beef Patty, Soup Joumou (Squash Soup), Griyot (Fried Pork), Diri Djon Djon (Mushroom Rice), Sweet Plantains, and Fried Red Snapper. Every dish tasted authentic and was delicious. How exciting to know that I no longer have to wait until I visit my parents or go to family events to get Haitian food.

Rice and peas (technically they are beans) you get is plentiful. Many dishes also come with cabbage and black beans (almost soupy) on the side, if you like, at no extra charge. Beef patties are delish, or so I am told :( Before I could try them, fellow diner had already consumed both! Maybe next time. Unfortunately too, no coco bread :( For vegetarians, there are options. Their vegetable stew was quite good. Also got a free sample with order. I picked the brown stew chicken, another tasty. Service very friendly. And takeout nicely packaged.

The doubles? Exceptional. Soft, perfectly filled, and full of flavor. And the hot pepper sauce? Whew. It didn't just add heat, it elevated an already outstanding dish to another level. I ordered so many doubles I barely had room for anything else but I had to try the dhal and it was exactly what I needed. Comforting, rich, and done right. Everything tasted like true, authentic Trini food, the kind that makes you feel warm, satisfied, and already thinking about your next visit. I was literally craving it every single day for the rest of my Lancaster trip. The space itself is on the smaller side, but really cute and inviting. The service was great: friendly, welcoming, and made the whole experience complete. Whether you're new to Trini food or already know what's up, Calaloo will not disappoint. Trust me, you'll be planning your next visit before you even leave.

The food is so tasty -- but watch out if you've never had true Jamaican Jerk Chicken! Suggest starting with the Mild sauce and going from there. The chicken is grilled, not baked, not roasted, so you get the delicious char taste along with her fabulous homemade seasoning. Her? Mom. In the back -- making her recipes, watching every dish, ordering and organizing ... Mom grew up in New York, but never lost her Jamaican accent, her roots, her love of culture and food. Now she shares it with us - hallelujah! The food - in general - is amazing. It is authentic Jamaican home cooking working within American guidelines for food safety, COVID, sanitation, etc., but bringing THE FULL TASTE of Jamaica to Middleton. The meals come with side dishes. We chose rice, rice and beans, cabbage, mac and cheese. (There are other sides too.) Our entrees were Jerk Chicken (bone-in) and Brown Chicken Stew. Really...the small shop is set up for take-out, but my son and I were ready to eat. So we sat at one of the 'ice cream parlor' tables (there are two tables each with two chairs) and chowed down. The Jerk Chicken is amazing. Mom has a gift for seasoning. The chicken was falling-off-the-bone grilled to perfection. We got there early - 11:30. She said, "Come back at 1. It will be perfect." She was so right. Everyone else knew to call ahead and order. When we returned there were four people waiting. Soon a few more couples came in. We were served in order - definitely worth the wait. I've never had Jerk Chicken with that combination of grilled tenderness (NOT DRY), flavorful seasoning, and spicy hotness. Yes, even the Mild sauce made us sweat! The Brown Stew was equally flavorful. The chicken was balanced with the sauce...which was plentiful. If you get rice as a side dish, SAUCE YOUR RICE. If you've ever been surprised by a really tasty risotto, you'll find this a similar experience. I have to comment on the mac and cheese and cabbage as well. Both homemade from scratch. The mac is baked and the cabbage is braised. Plenty of cheese on the mac. It's a rich, filling side. The cabbage maintained it's crisp freshness. Also seasoned perfectly. Didn't need salt, pepper or anything else. Spot-on. Oh! Beverages I've never heard of. Be adventurous. It tried the pineapple-ginger soda. Strong ginger aftertaste and a powerful pineapple front-end. Son had the "Sof Drink Champagne" that was lovely, resembling cream soda. Really nice. And this shop saves you from the TSA, plane tickets, lodging...! You can go to Jamaica for $25 for two with drinks and lunch for tomorrow. Deal. You will be surprised and pleased. Your taste buds will thank you. We will be back. Veterans please note: Mom served 23 years with us in the U. S. Army. RESPECT.
