Some TAD products are solid. Other's aren't. But you won't know until you try. And unfortunately, returns/exchanges cost you (shipping + restock fees). For a premium brand with only one physical location, that's bad form. Most items feel overpriced, likely to cover design/production costs more than actual value. Support is spotty, probably just one person handling it all. And the storefront staff? I've personally interacted with several TAD employees in person when making trips up to SF... All except for one came off as snooty, cold, or outright dismissive. The exception was genuinely kind, helpful, and exactly what you'd hope for in a brand ambassador. Some of their products are truly great. But, unfortunately, you're made to feel like you should be grateful to have bought from them, not the other way around... After receiving 2 pair of pants that were around 4 inches too long compared to every other pant I own in the correct size I had to return. They only gave me 1 return label and never responded to my email about the 2nd one. Needed 2 because they were ordered at different times and had to send both separately. Refund was only applied after a few weeks when I emailed them and not even refunded fully even though pants were never washed with tags and in exact condition. Upgrading initial rating. Initial, horrible customer service experience with a faulty product. Got a shag hoodie (2nd one because I liked the first) with one of the pockets sewn shut. Unusable. Have been trying to return for weeks and keep getting the run around on a return label. Update 1. Made progress, some of the issue is on me and they helpfully pointed me in the right direction - not intuitive. We have now shifted from stalled to a work-in-progress. It's been over 5 months since I placed an order (May) for an item that was supposed to be shipped in July. I've been told several times that the item would be arriving and shipping "this week" only to find out that the delivery is pushed back another month. Last week the status update was that the item was en route to the warehouse for shipment processing. Now the status indicates that the item is still in production with a shipping estimate mid-October. On top of this, TAD customer service has provided no explanation for the continuous delays or reasons for the misinformation I've received to date. EDIT: Here we go again! Status indicated that the item was en route to warehouse and scheduled to ship Oct. 13-20. On Oct. 17 they updated status to "In Production" and indicate a mid-November shipment estimate! read more

I have since bought several more items since the 1st release M65 jacket and have been pretty happy with the purchases. Now that TAD has the "foundry" more streamlined into their website (and I would assume also their MRP updated and/or better streamlined as well), at least now you know where they are at in the manufacturing process of a limited production run item that you have purchased. Regarding others complaints of limited inventory, considering TAD's really more of a "boutique" kind of shop, you can't expect these guys to have mounds of inventory in stock like brands that mass produce from a factory out of China. At least they are still manufacturing much of their product line in the USA and if it's not made in the USA, I have to applaud TAD for being upfront about it and telling the consumer exactly where it was made at (unlike competitor companies such as PDW). I've been a TAD customer for well over 10+ years now and I appreciate the design updates/upgrades they have been making to their products. Aside from the customer service issue and updates on the M65 jacket I had, all of the other garments I have received prior and after that purchase have been great. With so many knock-off garments that have flooded the market and a new generation of consumers/guys trying to look "hard" as they take their Subaru Outback or Overland Tacoma on a gravel fire-trail road then claim they go "off-road" or are larping like they're fresh out of BUDS and are now part of Seal Team 6, it's refreshing to see that TAD has implemented "slick" / "sterile" designs to clean up the outward appearance of their product line. I really like the look/feel of the more tapered pants that has been implemented in the updated designs. No complaints whatsoever on their pant construction. Just know that you absolutely do not want to use fabric softener on these garments. I let them all hang dry. I still have 4 of the 1st run Nylon AC pants (I think they're all 8+ years old now if I'm recalling correctly) and they are still going strong with the exception of 1 because I made the mistake of using a detergent that had a fabric softener agent on that particular pair of pants. I was able to make some repairs with my mid-grade consumer sewing machine but you must absolutely know that fabric softener will slow-kill Nylon fabric. Several of my newer pairs of pants (purchased within the last 4 years), I haven't had any issues with. All cut/sewn in the USA. Been happy with them and no issues to date. I own 7 different TAD jackets (6 made in the USA and 1 from Canada). I've received nothing but compliments regardless which jacket I'm wearing. Own 2 of the newer vests and also have 3 of the original poly Ranger hoodies. All great gear as long as you properly maintain them. Can't speak on TAD's packs as all of my backpacks are either Made in the USA Mystery Ranch or LBT units. Having said that, there are 2 TAD packs I currently have my eyes on.... Can't speak on TAD's (or PDW's) flannels as mine are all vintage US made Pendleton's but the one's I've seen on both their websites look nice... Now with regards to their competitor PDW, if you've been a TAD customer for awhile then you already know the back story. PDW has great pants but very disappointing to see that their Defiant Hoodie IS MADE IN CHINA. I was told their products were all Made in the USA and felt sick to my stomach when the Defiant Hoodie I received directly from PDW had a Made In China label. PDW, grow some balls and put the COO (country of origin) on your website... *** TAD, I would highly recommend breaking down the PDW Defiant Hoodie to the pattern template and sourcing the fabric then getting it made in the USA (or Canada worse case). PDW (or whomever the oem/ogm is if the jacket is just privately labeled) really nailed the fit on that jacket... read more

One of the modern purveyors of "tacti-cool" gear in San Francisco. They felt like a leader for years, but some multiple-years-ago timeframe ago, the founder sold out, and they feel like they've been on a slow downward spiral. Slowly removing useful features from some gear and clothing, many new items are more fashionable than anything (and to be fair, are advertised as such) you'd actually want to wear in the backcountry or in a tactical environment, and their "Foundry" semi-custom, kind-of-like-their-own-Kickstarter "edition", while seemingly kind of cool, also feels just a hair too much like an attempt to bilk money from their fans. At the prices they charge and for the quality and workmanship they espouse, the changes over the past few years feel mostly negative. Some of the advertising they do about durability used to be relentlessly impressive, today... not so much. That said, this location in Dogpatch feels very appropriate to the brand, the selection is good-- they definitely hold back some gear from online for the store itself-- and the employees are mostly pretty decent, even if they seem oddly limited in their ability to help you. And the gear and apparel, as said, are still quality pieces that you can depend on. read more

I used to love TAD, but not anymore. I hate to compare them to Patagonia, but I will. I bought a hoodie back in 2014 for nearly $200. I contacted the guys at TAD regarding repairs due to normal wear and tear. Well, let's just say the estimate for repair was $108 + taxes and shipping both ways from NYC was not what I wanted to hear. Needless to say, I had hoped they would stand behind their product and fix it for next to nothing, as I've found Patagonia happily does without even asking on many of their products, priced high and low. Regardless, it would be easier to purchase a new one and have it shipped to NYC. I'm sadly disappointed and I probably won't shop here anymore and/or recommend it to anyone. I really had hoped they would stand behind their product and fix it at no cost to me. Anyways, I was wrong and that's the end of that. Great product, lasted barely 4 years with normal wear and tear. Elbows developed holes, sleeve cuffs became tattered and worn and it just didn't hold up for normal wear and tear, having worn it 6-7 months out of the year. Good luck guys! I order from them now and then and have been to their dog patch location. Never been disappointed. Just purchased a 3-season jacket during the end of winter sale, it was too small. Online exchange was painless and now that I have a better fit, I wear this thing everyday. It would be nice if they hand more stock, but that's not how they work. They are a company that wants to make cool, innovative items in small domestically produced batches, with materials from other quality small businesses. I live here in the city and do stop in from time to time (When in Hayes) Each time I enter this location - I am always met with an instant engaging conversation; helpful and friendly... I have a black Litespeed pack and love it! I am doing a few 'add-on' pieces like most of us do... I really love Hiking in the Sierra with this pack. I use it as a carry on as well for weekend trips. My only 'CON' like most.. Is that I cannot find the color pouches and or any pouches that I have an interest in. This I have noticed is 'the way it is'. I get it! But it would be much better if a guy didn't have to wait and wait for new goodies. Anyhow, I am still giving my five stars. Expensive items? Yes, but worth every penny, so far! I came to the Dogpatch store, and wanted to purchase a jacket in a certain size. It wasn't available in the size that I wanted, so the associate there, Cameron, informed me that if I purchased the jacked online yesterday, it would be available that afternoon in store. I drove to the same store today, expecting that the jacket would be ready. The associate informed me that the jacket wouldn't be ready until Tuesday. The problem is that I live 90 min away, and made a trip to pick up the jacket today before the work week. I explained the situation to the associate, and which point he said, "I don't know what to tell you." He said it in such a glib, smug way, which kind of compelled me to write this email. I understand that this email says that I'd be informed when it's ready, but you can't have your associates 1) make empty promises and/or 2) engage with customers in this matter. I'm only one customer with admittedly not a lot of influence, but someday this could bite you guys in the ass, regardless of how great your stuff is (and it is great). read more

Triple Aught Design (which from now on will be referred to as TAD gear), is one of my favorite companies of all time ever. My review consists of the store and of the company in general. I heard about the company through some friends who were/are in the military and through some shooting buddies. They swore by their jackets, and I was in the market for a new one so I said "hey, why not?" Fell in love with the Spectres and Rocketworld's Ronin jacket. I was going to make the online order but my friend happened to stop by their storefront in the Dog Park and pick them up for me. Love that the jackets are made in the U.S.A., and ones I got also had a made in CA tag too. The craftsmanship is superb - they really pay attention to the details here. High quality materials, zippers are sturdy, and it is amazing to use these in the rain (the water just beads up and falls down). Other items I have bought: *Laptop Bag: Sturdy and Roomy! *Comm Case: a lot of gear uses JUST molle, but TAD attaches Velcro and provides both horizontal and vertical straps. I attach this to my go-bag and throw my phone in there for easy access. Can also easily hold some cards/cash or a small point and shoot camera *Shorts: High quality with plenty of pockets! What I really love about TAD gear is their attention to quality customer service. If you are on Facebook, they are actively involved on their fan page. Sometimes people on facebook think that posting a question/complain on the fan page is more appropriate than let's say, calling or e-mailing their customer support directly. This would annoy some people, but the employees at TAD are always helpful and even address the concerns presented on facebook. It's the little things that count. To elaborate more on the customer service, I share some stories that friends of mine have had in dealing with them: -during last year's Triple Play Weekend, my friend Justin bought a Spectre LT and after comparing it to mine, noticed that one of the side pockets was not sewn up all the way. He brought it back the day after, willing to drop it off for a fix or find a comparable product, but they did a clean exchange, no questions asked. -another friend of mine, Brian, bought a customized Strider knife. They called him the SAME DAY that he made his online order to let him know there was a tiny scratch, and if it was okay to delay the shipping ONE DAY so that they could get it fixed. -I left my jacket out in my car on a hot day, and the adjustable straps on the sleeve of my jacket got separated (the rubber from the Velcro) since, I assume, the glue melted. I asked them if there was a glue or a fix that they recommended, but they offered to fix it for me after I shipped it to them. ***The Store I've been to the actual store a few times and the staff has always been courteous, helpful and friendly. They will go out of their way to "check the back" (which so many of us like to ask retail employees to do) in case something is not showing on the shelves. I haven't been there since the remodel, but curious to see how it looks. What I love about the staff though is that they are patient, and do not exhibit any "Elitist" behavior that I have seen from employees at other stores that sell outdoor/survival gear. TAD is increasingly in popularity. I have not purchased anything in the last few months, but if you see something you like, buy it fast! They can sell out quickly, since everything is made in small batches (which sucks if you can not buy anything when you see it, but awesome because of the high quality control). There are even companies trying to compete and make knock offs (see: Condor and 5.11). read more

This is the place I have been searching for my entire adult life. I'm a fan for a number of reasons. 1. Their gear is really well made. They did their homework when designing things. The slotted buttons, double knee/seat are things of beauty and practicality. 2. They are local, and support local industries. Most items are USA made, but a few are even California made, which is nice to see. I also like the fact that I can stop by after work and shoot the shit and browse with no pressure to buy something. 3. They are helpful. Three items that I own were found in the back by an employee double checking on the sizes they had. I seem to be one of the most common sizes, so stuff goes pretty quick. Only real issue I can think about is that most of the stuff is small batch made, so if you are not on top of your game, you very well could miss out. Not a big deal, but I can see that pissing a few people off. But, small batches generally means better QC, so I'm OK with that. Some people might balk at the price of entry. $95 for a pair of cargo's is steep, but compared to a shitty pair of $65 Timberland pants that wear out twice as fast , its a better deal. Plus, they will last. much longer than your average pant because of the design and material quality. Keep up the good work guys read more

Now renamed Triple Aught Design, this store carries the premier selection of outdoor clothing, outerwear, jackets, and base layering. You absolutely get what you pay for. A premium gets you premium quality clothing made in America and it shows. High quality stuff, you get addicted by their products after the first chance purchase of their gear. Their customer service at this store is also fantastic, they went above and beyond for us. Here I also left with minimal damage, a Fisher Space Pen with the Triple Aught Design logo on it. read more

I'd have given two stars had I any of their kit because of the high quality. However, I've been left holding the proverbial bag. After purchasing a pair of pants and returning them because of their poor fit (waist and inseam were accurate), I have been left in purgatory. After multiple emails regarding my approved return, I had received no answer. I decided to call them to speak with someone in customer "service." After expressing that I wished to have my refund sent to my credit card, I was more-or-less told to pound sand. I was also told that they expect their customers to be "decisive" when purchasing their gear. I was incredibly deliberate in the product I ordered and to be spoken to with condescension is absolutely ridiculous. If only the customer service matched the product. I would give TAD 4-5 stars because the gear I own from them has lasted me (for the most part) for the 4+/- years I've been a customer and is good quality - not the super extreme awesome quality that the "Legion of TAD Fanboys" likes to brag about, but pretty good nonetheless. I've experienced button and stitch failure on shorts just from every day use (nothing major, though) and a VERY noticeable degradation on a pack strap. HOWEVER - I give it three because of certain aspects of their business model, and the fact that TAD has become something of a uniform for Bay Area airsofters and gear addicts who devote their entire paychecks to keep up their "TAD Addiction." I haven't bought any of their recent releases for these very reasons, and downsized my collection considerably so as to not be labeled along with them. I'm reasonably certain that the staff are aware of the cult following that their merchandise has; dudes with no lives and too much money await new releases like wild hyenas, and buy the "limited production runs" of gear within the first hour or so of being posted to the website. Even with the above, they still choose to limit the production runs (to ensure "quality," which is debatable considering the little things that have failed in some of my TAD apparel) so that the smart dudes buy up all the stuff and sell it to Asian Gear Collectors, or AGCs, on eBay. Then they promise more runs and the fanboys get riled up and the process begins anew. This results in there being little to no stock of certain merchandise, especially in "common" sizes (S-XL). Relying on a core group of consumers to buy out merchandise at the expense of other, unfortunate customers is unacceptable. I also hate how the "old" store in the Dogpatch has taken on a hipster-ish setting (the website, too, for that matter) as opposed to a store that provided hard-use goods to discerning customers. TAD used to sell a variety of brands and gear, but now it's mostly just their apparel. I feel like TAD is now the HUF or Hundreds or Stussy of the outdoors world... which is kind of sad. Alas, so it goes. TAD still get points for the occasional release of something that, truly, no other company can provide. They also have a good (albeit smaller selection) of non-TAD goods, like Surefire lights and batteries, edged tools, and what have you. And their shorts are the best shorts I have worn in my life... But the TAD of today is DEFINITELY not the TAD of two years ago. I will shop here for the occasional jacket, pair of pants or little accessory but for the most part, the hype has killed it for me. read more

Some of the products, the ones that are sewed in San Francisco, are really nice. The staff of the shop are however, complete poseur douchebags. Oh please let me throw in the term "wannabe" also. After I purchased two $280 fleece jackets from them and had the main zipper fail on both, I was told "yeah we can replace the zippers, it'll be 60 bucks each and it will take about three months to get back.". This was on a three-month old article of clothing that I had worn maybe ten times. Perhaps their keyboard warrior persona are friendlier or better at what they do than they are in person. I hope so for their sake. Or maybe their poseur wannabe clientele just like to buy "gear" in order to fantasize about what life is like outside their cubicles. Buyer beware. I bought a FAST Pack Litespeed Multicam Black. I paid more than I wanted to, but saw some good reviews. I paid extra to have it sent 2 day freight. 1 week later I called and some guy told me the order hadn't been shipped, and asked how soon did I want it. Upon receiving the Pack, I noticed it was way too small for my needs, so I called about sending it back. They gave me the address to send back, told me I had to pay for shipping it back.???? NO RETURN LABEL (DON"T SEND TO THE CA. Location!) After several more phone calls & emails. And 30 plus days I did get my money back, but out $100 bucks for extra shipping both ways. Triple Aught Design is true outlander wear. I've tried them all, Patagucci, Marmot, Arcteryx, REI, and Beyond Clothing. Hands down for the widest range of temperature and moisture control, Waterproof items, TAD garments have been the longest lasting, bullet proof I've owned this far. Their packs and bags are well thought out and are built to pass down to you kids. They are beyond Mil Spec. All this together is enough to gain my business, but their Customer Service is pinnacle. I always thought Nordstrom was the best, but this company either spends a lot of time screening their CS Reps or spends a lot of money training them. If I can fault them for anything it's not having enough stock to order year round of what I need. This shortage is due to the fact that are truly a small business with a huge cult like following. This make me pay attention to their Friday Drops at 0900. Sounds like Supply Drop from a C-130 in the field. Believe it or not items can be sold out in minutes if the drop because of their world wide following. They do however have "Foundry Projects," that you can order and wait for the finish date to know you will get the item for sure. Again you have to watch for this and get on it at 0900!!!! I got on line at 0915 to get in on a Foundry Flannel Shirt and my size was already sold out!!!! This quality and this price has the outdoor enthusiast's attention world wide. It's kinda cool cause you find yourself looking at someone when they have a TAD garment on, you give the nod!!! I've owned many brands of cars but the Subaru WRX/STI owners always acknowledge the Subie Rumble. TAD people recognize the Ranger Eye, or even the look. I had a inconspicuous jacket on with no branding on it at all, (Equilibrium) and the cashier at Lowe's asked me how long I have been a TAD junkie! Lol how random is that. I bought some clearence pants and a hat on the website, and selected pickup at the store since I live in the Valley and work in SF. As scheduled I received an email on the morning of the 2nd business day after I ordered letting me know how and where I can pickup my order. The email was clear about the number of the locker at the back of the store and code to open it, so I was confident I could hop off the T, walk half a block, hit the locker, and GTFO. Unfortunately it wasn't that simple. It appears that whole process has been discontinued. Now, "tactical boy" will interrogate you about your order, open a big safe, hand you your stuff, hopefully, since he didn't seem to care about my name or order number (so trust, but verify if you're ordering popular items), and send you on your way. While not the worst CS experience of my life it was pretty crappy. Unlike their products! I bought the Spartan RS pants as a test because they had my size and they were on sale. I'm training for a Section hike of the Pacific Crest Trail next Spring, so I'm spending a lot of time out and about preparping for a month or so of 20-25 miles days. I've gone through a pair of Patagonia pants which I liked, but were made in Asia. I've sent them back after "wearing" them out and I was attracted to TAD's Made in USA products. I'm not their typical Survivalist/Militia/wannabeMerc customer, but I like that their stuff is made domestically and seems really functional. In a word, the Spartan RS pants ARE! No-nonsense, no-frills, ny-co ripstop pants with two low-rise thigh pockets, two welt pockets, and two patch pockets on the butt. The pants held my wallet and phone on the thighs, my keys, cash, and change in welts, and I just did almost 15 miles through the Santa Clara county hills feeling dry, cool, and comfortable. Triple Aught Design. That's what T.A.D. gear stands for and I just learned that today. For the past year or so all I have heard from the bf is TAD gear this....TAD gear that. Sometimes I get home and see packages from UPS. I think yippee...a package for me? Nope, that would be more TAD gear stuff the bf ordered. Do you really need the same pair of shorts in 3 different colors? This past weekend we took a long weekend to San Francisco. The bf says we have to check out the headquarters of TAD gear. Now that I think about it, it was probably his ploy to buy more stuff from them AND have his vacay. All joking aside, I honestly think this is a very cool place. When you walk in you are greeted by a ginormous T-Rex skull and custom built scooters. I am in love with scooters and secretly hope I get one for my birthday. (are you reading this Alex?) TAD Gear is basically a guy's paradise to rugged, high quality, hip, urban clothes and other 'tactical' gadgets. I saw funny patches, IWG figurines, headlamps, belts, sunglasses, hoodies, camping gear, watches, pants, and shorts--I heard all their clothing is made in small batches and sell out quickly so get the jump on! While the bf was talking to the owner Patrick and after about 15 minutes of looking around at more stuff like custom knives.....I sought desperation. Luckily the guys working here are really cool and helpful. Mike chatted me up about food and shopping. He had some freakin hilarious stories that thoroughly entertained me. Now I am the one who is sad they don't have a shop in San Diego. Anyways, I'm looking forward to coming back to SF AND to TAD gear soon! read more
