Cons: Start up fee, I'm going to say it was about $250. Seems excessive to me, we aren't joining a 24 fitness, just kids lessons. Crowded: this is a popular place, even with multiple instructors the mat is full (I would suggest splitting the class). I observed and signed up during the summer, when school started the numbers doubled, the last class had 27 kids on the mat. The no name brand Gi is 75 dollars, buy your own online for cheaper and better quality. Summary: It's a good place and the owner/instructor knows his stuff. For a high contact sport, the high number of students on the mat is a concern for me. I am not familiar with martial arts in any form, but as a teacher even just a regular class with 27 is difficult to keep eyes on. I somewhat resent the start up fee and 30 day termination requirement to end auto withdraw from my checking account BUT I signed the contract and it was all up front so I chose to pay that and it's on me. My daughter enjoyed her time here, we just found a place that better meets our needs. She is continuing her Jui jitsu and I'm grateful that this place gave her a foundation to build on.

My son, who has been diagnosed with ASD, was scheduled for his second trial class. We showed up early and waited patiently--for over 35 minutes past our appt time. There was no front desk staff to check him in, and the coach told us to wait for the check in person and proceed to completely ignored us. He clearly started the 4 PM class we were scheduled the trial for. Shouldn't there be a list of students prior to starting the class for the coach to see? It felt like we were invisible just because we weren't paying members yet. This was supposed to be a welcoming environment, but instead, we were left feeling neglected, disappointed, and discriminated against. On top of that, the facility itself was cramped and located next to a foul-smelling dumpster--not the kind of place I'd want my child to spend time in. I don't know how this place had operated before with all previous year 5 star reviews, but as of today, they have clearly lost their touch and a potential enrollment. I'm so glad we didn't sign up. No child--especially one with special needs--should be made to feel this unseen. If you're looking for a place that respects and supports every student, I strongly urge you to look elsewhere.

It's difficult to find a gym where you feel safe, respected, and uplifted but here at this dojo I feel that and more. Everytime I bow in and step on those mats I feel an immense feeling of gratitude to train here. Chief Mikey and Kat have poured so much love and hard work into this space and that is clearly evident in the program that they offer. They have early bird jiu jitsu classes offered at 5am 3x a week, evening classes offered 5x a week and they have a Saturday AM class available. I've trained internationally and at quite a few large gyms in San Diego but nothing quite compares to a small ratio of student to teacher. Mikey or Alex never hesitates to answer any question I have, and I never leave frustrated that I didn't quite get the technique because the instructors were too occupied. I am stoked that I came back here (I think it's been a solid few months at this point) And I warmy invite any one who is interested in trying out their stellar karate program or their jiu jitsu program! It's been great for all of us. My 8-year-old has really been enjoying the dojo and the classes have not only been great for teaching him self-defense, but he has also learned humility and benefitted from the structure and discipline. His behavior is already noticeably better. As a 40-year-old fat guy I'm not looking to win a world title or get involved in any kind of "Hard Core" battle training, but really enjoying the training with Professor Ricky. It's a great work out with a great group of people. The coaches are very knowledgeable and good at working with you at your level. Everybody is there to support each other to train and get better. It certainly can be very intimidating at first, but after you get a chance to meet everybody you soon realize that nobody is there to flex an ego or try and crush anybody.
