This is an awesome little joint near 5th and Hennepin. When I say litle, I mean little, but they maximize the space they are in with the tables in close. Showing up at noon means there is a line. Get with the drill because it is pretty much a one way circle through the eating area. People seemed to be ordering up the Gyro salad, which looked yummy and huge, but I stuck with the gyro sandwich. Worth the wait and the travel time from work! This place is not a hole in the wall, but sort of is a hole in the wall. I went there for lunch with my coworkers on a Thursday. We waited in line for about 15 minutes and it's definitely WORTH the wait. When we got to the front of the line, the reason why we waited so long became very apparent; the entire operation was run by two guys (I'm assuming they own the place). One guy takes the orders and handles money, the other guy creates all the orders on the fly. I ordered the Gyro Combo with Salad and a soda. The portion was BIG. Very fresh ingredients, warm Gyro meat and sharp tasting toppings. All I did was add a little spice to kick things up a bit. They also had a good assortment of sides and desserts, but I didn't get any since it was my first time there. I'll definitely get those on my next visit! read more

When I was a little kid, my dad had an office above the Trieste Cafe and would take us there (we called it - and still do - "Omar's") when we would visit him downtown. Now, working downtown and returning as an adult, it's just as good as I remember (though, to be honest, as a kid I didn't even realize it was a greek deli because I never set my sights any further than the ham hero). I admit, I still can't review Trieste for the acclaimed greek goodies - I can't order anything but the ham with everything. It is the best sandwich downtown. These Gyros rock. They load the pita with very fresh ingrediants and the meat tastes awesome! The owners are amazing people and no matter how many people are packed into the tiny place, I never feel grossed out. The baklava is pretty good but, the best thing to get would be the gyro and gyro greek salad. If you come by yourself to order for the whole office, except to wait. Great lunch spot! Stopped by here looking for lunch on the way to the convention center. I had the gyro and pasta salad meal, and the gyro was great! The portions are hefty and the spices in the meat were excellent. The pasta salad was a little oregano-y for my taste, but there were 3 or 4 different pasta salad options so I probably just chose the wrong one for me. I frequented this Cafe in the late 1990's (great food) then I was transferred to the other end of Minneapolis. I recently came back to a building connected to the Lumber Exchange and I rediscovered Trieste . . . my favorite by far is the Gyro sandwich. The flavorful meat (and I mean MEAT . . . overflowing with meat) the Tzatziki sauce - not too sour, not too sweet - just the right balance, shredded lettuce, onion, perfect pita . . . and a bag of chips. The sandwich is big enough for two meals (which it is for me)! I now go there once a week for my gyro fix! Guess the consistency of the food doesn't surprise me as the same guy are working there as when I went there in the the first time! read more

Loaded! That sums up the gyro platter. It is ever so gently put together, literally piece by piece of fresh lettuce. If I lived or worked near by I would make this a regular spot for sure. It is small but simple and quiant. The only reason I shaved off a star is because the lamb meat is not freshly shaved off a rotating spit. Great place for lunch if you're working downtown. A friend introduced me to it, and now everyone at my office loves going there. It has the most meat on a gyro of any place I've been to, also the veggies are very fresh. Best Greek downtown and in the regular rotation. Big minus is seating, which runs out quickly. So fast that I never try to come here if it's Noon or later. But if you get there, amazing value proposition -- get the Gyro Plate with Rice (the combo costs more and you won't need more food). There are a line for lunch at noon, but it was a well worth it. I got the gyro plate with salad. All the vegetables were chopped right before being put on the plate. It included a very generous portion of feta, pita, tzatziki, hummus and meat. No skimping on the good stuff. There was no way I could finish it.
