Thoroughly surprised and impressed with this hidden gem in an industrial part of town! Superb food (esp. the main dishes) , nice price, and great service in a family dining room kind of environment. It looks like they have a daily menu of specials, as we were handed a special menu for the Sunday that we visited. I ordered the stuffed trout, which everyone else shared a mouthful or two, with exclamation marks in their feedback. The carnivores ordered baby goat stew, steak on a hot stone and chicken with mushrooms - they all looked very impressive, and were given top-notch reviews. I don't eat meat, but I trust my fellow diners' taste :-). Even though we were stuffed after consuming the generous portions of the main course, we didn't want to miss their unique desserts, with just enough stomach space to share two. The only pity was their side dishes (included with the main) - they looked and tasted too much like an afterthought. The mains are gourmet tasting, while the sides are bland and uninteresting. Victor, thank you!!!! Here on business, and I had no clue where to have dinner (my wife suggested Tres Chaves). On this cold, rainy night, Tres Chaves offered me a warm and welcoming experience. In from Southern California, this Portuguese restaurant hit the spot. I was looking for a good steak and was delivered great flavor over a hot stone, accompanied by a good serving of buttery rice and frites. Victor, my server, informed me of the special tiramisu made with honey, which was accompanied by an espresso. Food was honestly super delicious. I would definitely recommend the steak on stone if it is your first time here. I had one of today's specials, shrimp with vegetables and potatoes. I will admit that based on all the 5-star reviews on here I was REALLY looking forward to trying this restaurant. Disappointingly it wasn't what I expected. I ordered the chicken and rib dinner for 2 which comes with a large salad, a round loaf of bread, a pan of rice, french fries, chicken and ribs chopped into pieces. Now I will admit that you get plenty of food and most of it tasted ok, but the chicken was dry. Really dry. Thank goodness that I asked for extra garlic sauce because it came in handy. I used to really love the garlic chicken and rice meal but something's changed recently. The sauce used to be a rich, umami and garlicky but recently tastes more like vinegar or pickles. Also, the chicken parts they use are heavily bony so there isn't much meat to be enjoyed. I think too as things have become more expensive, the portion sizes have dropped significantly. read more

The broth that the mussels were in was very tasteful. Along with the mussels we decided to get a bottle of red wine. I am not a fan of wine but this wine was worth getting. I must say it's definitely hidden gym I felt like I was going back in time walking to this place the service was great even though the waitress didn't speak English to ocean understood everything I was saying and she was really amazing we order the steak the mushroom chicken in the chicken garlic all through the dishes were cooked beyond what we expected to get. Quick heads up if you get to steak on the stone make sure you take it off on time or the steak will be too well done unless you like it that way as for the chicken and garlic I loved everything about it but the chicken mushrooms tasted good but not something I would get again. Having the pleasure of being exposed to Portuguese cuisine in Portugal a few years back i found this restaurant an absolute delight for taking me down a stroll of memory lane! The ambience was that of this small restaurant in downtown Lisbon complete with the 5 old timers sipping wine, shooting the breeze , and what sounded like a debate on the game of soccer being played on tv Victor the waiter was so friendly and attentive and suggested a fabulous bottle of Portuguese red wine. Tres Chavez is located only a few blocks from where I work; after years of promising myself to try it, I finally walked over for lunch today. Had the Grilled Quail special (four little birds for $14) at the bar and they were delicious. Included sides were run-of-the-mill formerly-frozen thin-cut french fries and white rice that I didn't bother with, as I wasn't in the mood for rice. Had a run-of-the-mill lettuce-and-tomato salad with it (it's normally lettuce, tomato and onions, but I don't eat raw onions) served up with red wine vinegar and olive oil. Everyone else was drinking a nice glass of red wine, but I couldn't for various reasons. Had a nice espresso after, while waiting for the check. If everything else they serve is as tasty as the quail was, on that basis alone this place is a winner. I wish they were more creative with the side dish options; but the french-fries-and-rice approach seems to be pretty standard practice for Portuguese restaurants around here, so I won't fault them for it. read more

The place looks crummy on the outside but once you get in, the set up was elegant and cozy at the same time. The food was absolutely superb -it's not something that you find on every menu in the city and I was pleasantly surprised and even amazed at the way the food was presented - the taste was even better! the skirt steak with gravy was absolutely fantastic; it was a little bit lemony and not the usual gravy that you often have in restaurants. Love the bacalao because it wasn't salty at all..the only need for improvement was the bread served at room temperature but upon request they warmed it up. The bonus was the quality of service-the manager was very patient to answer questions and made sure we had everything we needed. He even shared the history of this place. This spot isn't located in the most ideal neighborhood but the food makes up for it. I ordered the Portuguese steak which sat on top of a gravy like sauce with a spread of home baked chips. They say never judge a book by it's cover and this place is a great example of that. The steak was fairly succulent, the chips were enjoyable and the sauce- could've used less salt. I recently was introduced to this restaurant and i can't rave about it enough. What delight it is to have a place like this to come to for authentic Portuguese cuisine. I come here often, and by often you could say almost every Sunday. My goodness, the food is delicious and so full of flavor. I usually have the the 'bife a marinheira', it's a steak that comes with seafood on the side such as clams and shrimp in a bed of the most amazing sauce ever to be made! its my go to plate, however i have had other things. Everything on that menu is to die for. The house wine is unbelievable as well and the service is great. I lived in Yonkers my whole life and I must say I'm very impressed. I came here with some friends one evening after craving steak. I previously saw some good reviews on this place but the location seemed sketchy. It's in a not so great neighborhood but you must come here. Once you enter, you go to this tiny dining area behind the bar and it makes you feel like you're in a South American restaurant. They were so nice and hospitable. The place is very simple from outside, but they do have parking, plus for that. The service was on point, it was Wednesday night. The food was sooooo "scrumptious and I was so pleased can not explain. We had the traditional sausage as appetizer and bacalhau. Was there this past Sunday. Had been there three times previously with a good experience. We were greeted by a waiter who seemed annoyed that we were there. We remembered him from prior visits and tried to engage him in conversation but he was not interested. A normal restaurant serves you glasses of water. Not at this place. When you ask for water you are brought a small bottle of it and charged for it. When I specifically asked for a glass of water then it was served without the charge for a bottle. We were reviewing the menu and asked the waiter about a couple of entrées. He informed us that they were out of several. This was only at 6:30 on a Sunday evening. We came to find out that they should've been out of a lot more entrées, specifically all the ones that we ordered. In a prior visit I had the grilled bacalau And it was delicious. This visit one of our dining companions ordered it and offered me a taste. I had to spit it out as I could not chew it. It was clear it was previously frozen fish that likely had been refrozen and then cooked. it was mushy and tough at the same time. I ordered the garlic chicken the whole version. It arrived chopped to bits so that the parts of the chicken were unrecognizable. It looked like the kind of chopped mystery chicken one gets in a crummy Chinese Takeaway when one orders general Tso's chicken. It was dry and completely unpalatable. Another diner ordered the grilled chicken and while it look like a half a chicken It too tasted as the meat had been defrosted refrozen and then cooked. Dry and tasteless. The other diner ordered lamb chops, tough and overcooked. We ordered the cheap bottle of wine special which was palatable. The waiter continued his surly attitude throughout attempting to disguise it to the women diners with a patronizing yes my dear. It is completely unclear how this fourth visit could be so different from our prior three visits. There won't be a fifth. It's in a way out neighborhood in Yonkers not worth the trip. And we were coming here after telling our two other dining companions what a good place it was and they were looking very much forward to a pleasant experience.
