Just trust me on this. Get the picanha when you go to the grilling station. It is the traditionally cooked Brazilian top sirloin, and it's to die for. Definitely one of my favorite takeout places in Mount Vernon. I usually grab some rice and a few slices of picanha, and it is enough to fill me up. If you've never been, the setup may be a little confusing. When you first walk in there's a buffet with salads, rice, beans, and an ever changing variety of other dishes. Grab a plate or container, and fill it up with what you desire before going over to the grilling station. At the grill they'll put your meat in a different plate or container because the price per pound is different. Then you just take the items up to the counter where they are weighed and you pay. Very easy, very tasty, highly recommended. It is the best Brazilian food I've had in the US, and it is super authentic and brings me right back to the comforting flavors I remember when living in Brazil. read more

I went for drinks with some co workers and one being Brazilian. so he ordered for us I'm a beef guy and the meat did not disappoint. The drink ( Lemonade ) in resemblance however did a number on me. This is an awesome place where you can order and pay by weight. It is very casual restaurant, but the staffs and food are great. They offer a variety of meat: chicken, sausage, beef and pork. Also they offer hot buffet bar with rice, beans, stews, salad and other items. You can pick as much food that you want with the meat. The staffs would cut the grilled meat and dropped to your plate. Once you finished adding all the food, you can go to the counter and pay. Sometimes they have music at night, but it can be very loud. read more

ahhh chalanas.. sunday afternoon hungry as SH!TTT. drove by and saw Brazilian BBQ on the sign, automatically stopped and looked for parking around the area. Waked in and nobody took care of us, but i guess thats how this laid back place is. picked up a plate, added food and moved over to the churrasqueria part of the restaurant. Got 3 cuts of meat and the churrasco was the least tasking one. Not bad but i had better at other places. NOw the pork sausage and the steak (palomilla) is one of the best i had. after paying we got to pick our place to sit. it looks like a home bbq instead of a rest. we ordered a few Brazilian rinks and beer and stayed for 3 hours :) i definetly liked the place. not pricey and not fancy but homelike and delicious. read more

I'm so glad I found out about this place! I'll just start by saying that this place reminds me of some Brazilian rest areas that my wife and I passed when we were visiting there, you'd be surprised by the quality of bbq meat that you can get in these places along with good sides. This place is pretty small but has a good amount of tables, a chill ambiance and nice Brazilian music going, you really feel like you're in Brazil, you can go in and take the items in the buffet and bring your plate to get weighed which is one price, then you go to the bbq meat section and make your choices, you can have it medium or a little more cooked, they must sell a lot of meat because they are on skewers being freshly cooked, the meats get weighed at a different prices, to me the prices are reasonable especially with the quality of meat you get, you can pay with credit card or contactless payment but there is 3% discount for paying with cash. You serve yourself and there is no table service. We ate lunch here for less than $25 pp and were full, we loved the meat so much that we even went back to take some home. I cannot express how amazing the food is at Chalanas. I don't always work in Mount Vernon but when I do, I almost always try to make my way here. They offer a nice salad bar with multiple rice and bean options, but the magic is at the meat cooker. Chalanas offers a large variety of steak, ribs, sausages and chicken (so there is something for everyone). My favorite? Hands down the skirt steak! Staff will help pick the correct cook you request and will cut the meat up prior to it going on your plate, which I like. Although I must warn you - the meat is somewhat salty, but it just adds to the flavor (treat yourself, its fine). They price the buffet out by weight so be careful, you can easily fill your dish up to the brim with all of the options. A buffet style Brazilian casual restaurant, where you help yourself and pay by the pound. This is a relatively small restaurant with a handful of tables and a small parking lot for maybe 5 cars. The food is tasty - I got only hot buffet items and some churrasco. I tried the chicken pancake, chiccarons (on the dryer side), pork fried rice, and spaghetti with meat sauce from the buffet. They also had other chicken dishes, white rice, brown rice, and something that looked like a meatball/ meatloaf. From the grill I tried the skirt steak, sirloin with garlic (well done - was chewy and not that juicy), and short ribs. The meats are tasty and they provide plenty of different sauces and toppings you can use like chimichurri sauce, hot sauce, BBQ sauce, yuca powder, garlic powder, and some other spices/herbs mix. This place can get expensive if you eat with your eyes. The one plate of hot buffet and the meat plate cost a total of $18 and change. The hot buffet costs $7.49/lb and churrasco is $15.49/lb. They also have a variety of desserts that were all $5 or less including tres leches cake for $3.25. Service could improve. There isn't really a hostess and you have to ask around to figure out how things work. The cashier also could be friendlier. Overall, a very casual restaurant featuring churrasco with decent food in this part of Westchester. I still would prefer Copacabana in Port Chester in terms of taste and ambiance. read more

I agree wholeheartedly. Last summer '09, walked in with a friend to check it out and he was ...eh..don't want to eat here...was weirded out by the simpleness of it. Last weekend, on a great sunny late afternoon...went with another friend and thought we'd check it out. Lots of locals hanging out side having their beers. Went inside and was the same as last year with small buffet...but then this time I took notice of the flame cooking meats and such opposite. The service was ultra friendly, explained that it is by weight. And we didn't ask how much cuz we felt unsure how the place worked. The manager(?) brought over a couple beers and we picked some stuff from the buffet and moved to the meats where we asked what everything was and the guy sliced off whatever we chose onto our plates...we chose the chicken sausage, bacon wrapped chicken, the skirt steak and something else I dont' recall. Weighed the food and it came to $10 total for my plate and the beer! And I tell ya, I try not to eat much meat these days, but darn it if I tell ya..the skirt steak was soooo delicious! Been coming here to Chalana's for years but first time leaving a review. Whether it's the sausage, skirt steak, or bacon wrapped chicken, the food is always on point here. This is a casual little spot where the food is great and fresh. It's like a little buffet and theres a section where you can get different types of roasted meats. I don't give this restaurant 5 stars because some employees don't even speak English there, just Portuguese and it's a struggle to comunícate or you have to go to the cashier to speak to him since he speaks different languages. Another thing is that a waitress had a weird attitude with me when I asked her if they had more passion fruit mouse in the kitchen or something, since I saw the refrigerator where you can get them from empty, or maybe she had a bad day, idk. The way they charge you here is by weighing your food and the plate of meat that you bring from that section. You can eat there or just take it with you. A for-sure hidden gem in the Bronx. Me and the boys were craving Brazilian steaks and meats and were pleasingly surprised when we came across this place. They have warm foods ready at the buffet station, but the pros know to go straight to the meat rotisseries and stack your plate with meats first! I usually get the top sirloin, hanger steak, beef ribs, and two chicken sausages! Always ask for MEDIUM to avoid getting well done steak. It's extremely difficult for them to keep all the consistencies of steak ready for you so you'll have to settle for one of the extremes, either over cooked or slightly bloody (I choose the latter). It's better than some places in Brazil. The set up is very casual: you order what you want, choose some sides from the salad bar, and pay before you sit. Don't expect anything in terms of ambiance. Never tried Brazilian food before so I didn't know what to expect. This was some of the best food I'd ever tasted. I don't think I even took a breath while I was scarfing the food down. They charge by weight and you choose off a cafeteria style line of what you want, self serve. Everything I got was so good. The dessert (tiramisu) was even really flavorful. Discovered this place through the awesome yelp reviews. In a decent residential area in Mount Vernon... Very limited lot parking, so you'll likely need to search the local stress for parking. First impressions, a bit confusing on what to do.. If we should wait to be seated or just grab a seat and a plate? Finally notice a small sign on the front of the buffet line with a sort of explanation. The place itself is small and cozy, maybe can squeeze in 25 ppl total. They have bottled soda, juice, beer and some fresh made juices in the back. You start on the buffet and grab your items, I recommend the picadillo (ground meat with peas and peppers and onions), also the grilled chicken is surprisingly moist, yellow rice, and whatever else looks good that day. From the meat station, everything I tried was solid. Including the beef ribs, skirt steak, pork ribs, pork sausage... The bacon wrapped chicken looked a bit dry so I stayed away. The beef was all a perfect medium, and all the meat was juicy and flavorful. It was seasoned lightly, and I'd highly recommend getting those tiny red peppers that are stationed near the meat section, as they add a perfect spicy and vinegary touch to the meat. For 3 of us, with sodas for each and plenty of food, the total was about $35-40. A steal for great Brazilian BBQ. I'll never return to Texas De Brazil or any of the chain spots. Pro tip : even if you just want meat from the Grill, add a few items from the buffet line because they charge that at a lower price (9.99 for meat+buffet instead of 12.99 for meat only) read more

If you are a meat lover, this is the place to go. I by accidentally stopped here during my lunch break thinking that my co-worker was here because the same car was parked out front. If not for that, I don't believe I would have stumbled upon this GEM. Do not judge this place by the way that it looks, you will be super surprised to find out that a restaurants decor have nothin to do with how good or bad the food is. Or at least that's what you learn about this place. They have a great buffet with 25 different items which isn't what I really come there for so I wouldn't be able to comment on that food..... But in the back area is a man, standing behind a counter with 15 to 20 different rotating meats. Some cooked well done, some cooked rare, and all the others in between. He grabs a plate and asks what you want, then he'll grab the slab, cut a small price to ask you if you agree with the temperature of the meat or if you'd like to go more rare or more well done. After you choose he asks how many slices you'd like and if you want it cut up or not. He serves you your plate, puts a dash of salt on the end he cut from and hooks it back onto the big fire pit. The meat is the juiciest, most flavorful, fresh, type of meat I've come across at a restaurant in a long time. I happen to be something of a steak connoisseur, so peter Lugers, Bobby flays and Wolfgang's are regular places I go to for steak, and I have to say this place will give any of them a run for their money. Chalanas has really great Brazilian BBQ. The salad bar has fresh vegetables and in the warmers they have really yummy fish dishes and beans and rice. This place had only locals, but a ton of them! I took it as a good sign. I was not disappointed. Ahhh, the best part was the BBQ, they have delicious skirt steak and garlic sirloin. My husband and I gorged ourselves for only $18! They just take your plate and weigh it, and that is what you pay. None of that pay $30 and flip your card to green or red. I would highly recommend this place for a casual dinner or lunch. A lively place with good brazilian bbq at an excellent price. It's a neighborhood joint, bustling and noisy and walk-in-off-the-street casual. I came late in the evening, and there was a band and a noisy crowd seated outside. Inside there were several tables with available seating. At first glance the neighborhood seemed a bit sketchy, but that was a first impression that passed quickly. I've been to the high-end churrascaria places, and it's definitely not on par with those, in terms of the quality of the meats or the preparation, or the buffet selection. What I mean by that is that the chicken was relatively dry, some of meat was tough or gristly, and some of the meat was *excessively* salty. That said, the chicken wrapped in bacon tasted very good, and the steak (when not excessively salty) was very tasty. The buffet has a small variety of hot foods and cold foods, plus a couple of stewed meat dishes that looked and smelled tasty but I didn't try. Both the roasted potatoes and the greens were cooked nicely but were completely lacking seasoning; the yellow rice with vegetables was also under-seasoned and slightly undercooked. Given the saltiness of the meat, however, it all balances out (if you're like me and don't mind mixing your foods) We also got a flan and a tiramisu, both of which were good. As other reviewers have noted, how this place works is you just go help yourself to the buffet with the takeout containers above the bar, visit the meat cutting station with another tray and ask for what you want. When asking for help, a worker there seemed surprised or confused when I looked at the buffet and asked "so how does this work?" but the meat cutting guy intervened and helped me out... he was very friendly and got me taken care of. What you can't beat is the price. I took enough meat for 3 people, and a few servings of buffet items, and spent barely over $30. Given that you can spend that much at a cheap chain burger place, and a lot more at a chain restaurant, I'd much rather come here. All things considered, without comparing this place to a higher end dining establishment, I'd say based on the food alone it's a solid 3-star establishment. However given the incredible value of what you're getting, generous portions of tasty meat, I'm comfortable giving it a solid 4. Knowing exactly what I'm getting, I'd happily come back. I love Brazilian cuisine. So when I found out that this place is but a stone's throw from where I work, that inner voice inside my head turned into a loud calling for me to take a gander over to Chalanas. Walking in, with my gorgeous Brazilian friend, I knew that this place is as authentic as you can get. The people are speaking the language, the décor looks like it's been transplanted from the mother country, and the food is superb. The cornucopia is served buffet style--which gave me more reason to love this place--and you simply grab whatever you want and then have everything weighed at the counter. The process is easy enough. If you're in the mood for some rodizio, they have that too. Alas don't forget about the extra helping of farofa if you really want to experience the best of Brazilian cuisine. My friend, who looks like those damn Brazilian Victoria Secret girls, ate even more than me and at the end looked like she was due to give birth at any moment...which made the whole thing even hotter. Anyways, I digress but my point is this place is legit and definitely worth checking-out. There's a reason why it has such a high rating. I would have to agree with what the masses have spoken.
