Fantastic local hangout. Two pool tables upstairs and the bar food is good. Clean for an older place.

I went here for the first time and loved it. It is such a vibe & close knit place. The bartenders were amazing and provided great service.

I like Treff's I worked at the Tavern in the 80s and 90s under Ben and Andy Linn - bartended there for 4 years.....glad it is still around and called Treffs now. Treffs is a nice casual spot to hangout, drink, play games and have a good time. It's a nice gem away from the square. They have $2 you call it week once a month! Can't beat it. Karaoke is also offered on Sundays, which is my favorite day to visit. Different events are hosted just about every day of the week. Although they don't serve food, they allow you to order at the restaurants near by and enjoy it there while washing it down with a cold alcoholic drink. Pretty awesome! read more

As a graduate of Texas State, I lived up the street from Treff's & spent moderate amount of time & money here. Great little place. A toss between "dive" & "college bar", this establishment has cheap drink specials & the students know it! Beer selection is moderate, but for a college hangout there's a few local & craftbeers in the mix of domestic "moneymaker" beers. The bar gets super busy, especially during "$2 Tuesdays" when everything is $2 & I mean EVERYTHING! So I'm usually at Treff's on Tuesdays for $2 you-call-its (best deal on the best night to go) but tonight was a friend's birthday & she wanted to have a few drinks there before heading to Austin. Well, as usual, we squished into a parking spot in the front of the tavern, walked in and sat at an open bar stool. I ordered an Ace pear cider and started chatting with friends while the jukebox was going with a vast array of music choices! Thats the beauty of a jukebox and I love the diversity! Okay so I decided to check in (via Yelp) and saw that they had an offer for $2 drinks which really excited me because it wasn't a Tuesday & I still could get some $2 drinks? HELL YEAH! WELLLLLLL.... it was more like a HELLLLLL NO because the bartender didn't allow me to redeem my deal. He even said he texted the owner and that the owner had no idea what kind of deal I was talking about? Well, the offer is still open on my Yelp app and I plan to find the owner next time I'm at the bar & ask him about it because that offer didn't magically come to be!!! In the latest wave of gentrification in this town, it seems like all I can find are hipster breweries that serve "craft" beer and overpriced food served on rectangular plates. If you like that kind of crap, go to aqua brew, you animal. If you want to go somewhere with cheap drinks and cool people (and if you live north of campus like this guy), look no further than Treff's. Some highlights. You call it nights and you call it week: Every Sunday, Treff's does $2.50 you call its, and $2.00 you call its on Tuesday. In addition to that, Treff's picks one week out of every month to be You call it week. That means $2 you call its all week. Going there, getting piss drunk, and stumbling back to my apartment, is among my fondest memories. Atmosphere: This place is dirty and divey in the best of ways. I used to go here with my friend from work all the time, and I always enjoyed seeing the bartenders and regulars. Really interesting people. Another upside is the patio, which allows filthy smokers like myself to smoke, drink, and have interesting conversations with other people. Another thing to mention, though, is that Treff's is much more of working people's bar. If you're a frat bro or sorority girl looking to blow mommy and daddy's money on a night of partying, you probably won't have a lot in common with the people here. The glasses: This is just a little nitpick of mine, but I always hate going to the square and getting served drinks in a plastic cup. Treff's gets ridiculously busy some nights, and they still manage to serve all of their booze in glass, which is something I like. So I went here on a Saturday. The inside was wayyyy too loud, and very little people were inside. Their selection of beers was so/so, although I had heard that they had more than what they actually had. The parking lot was awful. Construction going on and one way in and out. Only about 10-13 cars could park and you can forget it if you're driving a truck, as the guy driving a f250 found out after hitting the parked Mercedes. Not a great place for a huge group of people, but not bad for a San Marcos bar. When visiting just be wary of the parking lot and crazy drivers. read more

I love the $2 you call it weekalthough not all drinks are $2 and they fail to inform you of this before ordering it. I was willing to look pass this until I went in around 12am and had a few drink and was allowed to order a drink at 1:52am and they close at 2am. At 2:03 they bouncer was stand at our table demanding that two of my girlfriends and I chug our drinks and leave when we stated we'd like to not get drunk and drive the entire bar staff proceed to attack us and demand we finish our drinks, that we had just got and paid for, and leave or they'd take them. I felt very uncomfortable and attack so my friends and I just left. It was not a good way to end my night. read more

I'm here just about every Wednesday for trivia, and it makes me love them all the more for hosting such a fun experience. They always have specials wednesdays, including $3.50 LITs and other beer specials. If you just turned 21 and want to party/jam out to techno music/act like a child, go somewhere else. This is a bar for grown people, laid-back people. It's mostly populated by grad students, non-students, students who hate the Square, and a few older folks. Bartenders are nice and knowledgeable but not overly chatty, the way I like 'em. Beisdes trivia, they also host UFC fight nights and dart tournaments. Gordo's is right next door and will deliver to you while you're in Treff's for no extra charge. The place is kinda dirty, though. For a smokey, chill atmosphere away from obnoxious undergrads, go to Treff's. read more

I would definitely love to give Treff's more stars but to myself it is a solid 3.5. This was my second visit to Treff's because the first time i had been there i did not have a great experience. However, I am a big fan a second chances because who knows what might had been going on that night. The drink prices are very reasonable. Whiskey Sours only $3.50 and then they have some killer drink specials during the week I believe on Sundays and Tuesdays they have -You - Call - Its- for only $2!! The upstairs bar area has a bunch of darts to play and even a pac-man arcade game to entertain with. As for this little dive, I would return. read more

Trivia nights every Wednesday at 8 and Treff's two-floor, club house design takes some of the testosterone out of this sports bar in a good way, attracting groups of ladies as well as lads. My friends and I were here this past Friday with other work friends and we ordered a round of drinks. A few minutes later another friend met up with us and brought a round of shots. Within 10 minutes of being there a bouncer came up to us and told us we need to leave because we were "too drunk". I told him we weren't and we hadn't drank at all before we got there, we had all just been at a work function. He told us the bartender saw us walking to the bathroom "looking drunk". He wouldn't let us finish our drinks that we had just been served and only made the 4 people with shots out of my friend group leave. I think the staff there is racist just like other reviews are saying. Won't be coming back. read more

Well liquors were $2 tonight, and we were served well vodka and charged $6 a shot! The bartender who is also manager and share-holder DID NOT MENTION TO US that well vodka in the form of a pickle shot would be $6. As a longtime bartender being served by a long term bartender, when I'm told "wells are $2" I trusted that Chad would be honest with us. Instead, he took us to the cleaners. If I could give no stars I would. I have been in San Marcos for over 10 years. About 6 years ago I was man-handled by a door guy for no reason. I did not return to Treff's for almost 4 years. Since then, I have gone back a handful of times in hopes that it was just "one bad apple", but now I see that the employees at Treff's are out for nothing more than money. I love the convenient location of this bar, it's within walking distance of several apartment complexes and TX ST campus. This place is really small, so it fills up quickly, becoming overcrowded at times. The place itself is dirty and smoky. I have had mostly good service here, but one time I was served a drink with a fly in it. The bartender commented it was because the flies stick to their ice. gross. He made me a new one. If I could give negative stars, Treffs Tavern would definitely earn a solid -5. Honestly, I've never had such a bad experience somewhere that I've left frustrated. My boyfriend, his roommate, and I went here to watch the Cowboys game. They saw a board that stated, "$8 domestic pitchers open-8PM." Which is why they bought two pitchers of Miller light. However, when we went to pay out we were charged $12 each. When asking the bartender, who by the way had absolutely no personality or excitement for her job, said that since the computer put the price it cannot be changed. Which in my past experiences of being a hostess, server, bartender, and cocktail waitress I have never ran across a POS system that was unable to edit checks or reopen checks. So in hopes for answers, we talk to the manager. They say that there is nothing that they can do except maybe give us shots or like 3 beers. Which it was 3 in the afternoon, we weren't looking to get wasted or for shots. We wouldn't have caused a fuss if it was a couple dollars and there wasn't false advertisement, and we were going to just accept the alcohol. However, the owner ended up opening his mouth and being just absolutely rude. Even this drunk guy was trying to intervene, stated that he would reimburse us. The owner flipped because we stated that the sign was false advertisement and that he should probably fix it, he claimed to have 19 years of experience. I hate to be the one to say it, but being in the business doesn't make you an expert. It takes effort to, that of which he gave no effort in making great costumer service. I understand that this bar is located in a college town, and they probably do deal with a bunch of drunk college students. We weren't that case though, we were ripped completely off then kicked out by the owner for wanting a reimbursement. Safe to say, we will not be coming back to this disorganized bar. There's no food, no costumer service, and also no storage. Do you not realize that people could straight up walk out with those boxes of beer and kegs that you leave out in the open? Yes, you have been working in the food industry for 19 years if you think that that is a good call to leave your product in the wide open for everyone to take. One of the best bars in San Marcos. I've met the owner several times and even had a conversation or two with him. He's always so polite and genuine. There are a lot of regulars there but students often stop in on the way home from class. It's very spacious except for the patio. I hope they renovate that maybe to an upstairs or something because smoking is now banned indoors and that patio is tiiiiinny. Also a door on the girls bathroom would be cool. I just went there today and there was a huge sign above the bar saying $8 domestic pitchers during happy hour with a specified happy hour time of "open - 8pm". I was charged $12 and politely asked them to correct the situation. The manager stated that she would give us a free shot for the 50% up charge, blaming the situation on a computer issue. I didn't want shots at 3:30pm on a sunday. I just wanted to get charged the price displayed. No more no less. The owner of the bar wanted to give me a beer as compensation which I denied. His argument was that there were signs promoting $2 you call it nights and that the sign only applied to those days. Nowhere on the small signs he was showing as proof said anything about domestic pitchers. Furthermore, the sign above the bar said nothing about the special applying only to " $2 you call it days". Again, i just asked that I get charged the advertised price. The owner ended up kicking us out and refusing to correct the obvious issue. I never raised my voice or got rowdy. The owner even admitted himself that he was wrong, and tried to remedy their 50% up charge with one beer. Very disrespectful staff and the bar tender working was in serious need of a personality. The bar smelled of stale beer and the bar just looked dirty. Empty kegs were stored under customer seating. The bar owner claimed to have 19 years experience, but his bar reflected otherwise. It had the atmosphere of a funeral service and a walmart bathroom. Save yourself the trouble and go literally anywhere else. read more
